Alumni Picnic Moves to Saturday

The annual QAHS summer picnic
will occur on Saturday, August 25,
2012, at Gas Works Park from 11:30
am to 5 pm. A Sunday date was not
available this year.
All grizzlies are invited to
escape their winter dens for a tasty
summer feeding on burgers and
dogs (HOT dogs) at the grill from
Al’s Hamburger Place. Feel free to
bring a salad, casserole or dessert to
paw through, and, if we are as lucky
as last year … there will be SUN!
Don’t think the grizzlies will lose
their appetites if it is the other thing,
and there are large covered areas for
classmates to “ketch-up” and fine
dine. We always get a good turnout,
come and visit with your fellow
Grizzlies. The QA Picnic is open
to all our alums. Your donations
(suggested $5) are needed to help
cover rising park rent and food cost.
The Gas Works Park is at the
north end of Lake Union and parking
is available (Meridian Ave. N. and
N. Northlake Way). For detailed

This is our 30th year of awarding
Queen Anne Alumni Association
scholarships. During that time
hundreds of Grizzlies have gifted the
program with donations large and
small. The result is that 439 scholarship
awards, totaling $220,000, have been
provided to Queen Anne grads and
their descendants. All Grizzlies are
indebted to our loyal alums that have
supported the Association all these
years.
To mark our 30th anniversary, the
board of trustees authorized a onetime 30th Anniversary Scholarship
of $1000. Following a careful review
of all candidates, we designated one
of this year’s top achievers, Will
Mittenthal, as our 30th Anniversary
recipient. Will and his family were
present at the spring luncheon to
receive his award.

Hard Times in America
These are hard times for all of us.
We can see it here at the QAHSAA in
the greatly reduced number of alums
who are able to make donations to
the Grizzly cause. As our revenue
decreases we are having to make some
difficult choices.
Our annual participation in the
Magnolia Summer Festival will
be dropped this year. However, our
summer picnic is still on and will
again be held at Gas Works Park, so
weather will not inconvenience our
festivities.
We are informing you of the
close-to-the-bone finances we have
for operating funds. As many of
you know, we rely completely on
donations for our two purposes:
building a scholarship fund for
descendants of Queen Anne High
School alums, which will someday
continue of its own volition; and
covering the costs of the KUAY
production and our alumni events. As
other alumni organizations inform
their constituents of monetary needs,
so do we—the main difference
being that they charge annual fees
for membership in the organization.
Because of our reliance on donations,
we are not bringing in enough revenue
to fully cover the operating costs for
each year, and the scholarship monies
are not available for any other purpose.
We are reviewing other options to
reduce expenses, which may include
reducing the KUAY or eliminating the
spring luncheon.
Thank you for supporting us over
the years, and keep us in mind when
windfalls come your way.

Editor’s Column

Several topics came to mind for this column: my right
hand surgery, welcome back Gen. Peter Chiarelli,
newsletter operating cost donations, articles to John
Hennes, congrats to scholarship winners and the number of
paw prints in the February 2012 issue.
After finishing the February issue, my hands began to
hurt more and more. After painful tests it was determined
I needed carpal tunnel surgery. My right hand surgery
was May 10th and I’m doing much better now. Still have
e.w.pankey, editor
limitations, but that won’t stop me from putting together this
newsletter.
Welcome back, my classmate Gen. Peter Chiarelli (’68) U.S. Army retired.
I am very proud of your service and success in the Army, and that’s coming
from a Navy junior (wink). Hope to see you at the QA 68 Golf Tournament,
July 28th.
With the cost of publishing this newsletter, we need your unrestricted
donations for operating expenses. If each of you sent in $5 for the year it
would nearly cover printing and mailing of your 16 page newsletters. The
QAHSAA has never charged for the newsletter, but we need more alums to
join the generous Grizzly Angels.

1940s: Edward Goodall ’40 died in his B-24 plane
crash while on a mission over the Netherlands in
1943. A monument to the USAAF crew members
has been created at Opeinde, Netherlands. Their
historians would like

Vermillion ’41 celebrated his 90th birthday and
their 70th wedding anniversary March 13, 2012.
They live in a home in Mukilteo which Logan
designed and built in 1970. Logan retired from
Boeing after 28 years. Delna retired as broker/

owner of Towne or Country WA Real Estate after

37 years. They have traveled to 40 countries to
celebrate in March
date. Peggy (Hallenbeck) Johnson ’42 writes
that she loves the news in the KUAY. She still drives; is a retired nurse living
in Minneapolis and wrote of the death of her brother, Martin Hallenbeck
’45, who died March 9, 2011. His death coincided with the tsunami which
hit the harbors along Japan’s coast. Hugh Degler ’44, wore his WW II
Private First Class uniform to march in this year’s
Memorial Day Parade in Auburn, WA. He was the
oldest soldier to walk the entire parade length. Jack
Clawson ’46 retired last year as CEO of Endocyte,
a biopharmaceutical company. Prior to that he was
CEO of Hill-Rom Inc., a medical device company.
Jack lives in Bonita Springs, Florida. Clair Niesz ’46
writes that he grew up on Magnolia and that most of
his friends are

says, “I’ve been honored more than I think I should have been, to be honest
with you.” He still holds the UW record for season scoring average in basketball, 25.6
points in 1953. That was the only time the Huskies made it into the “Final Four!”

where she took up sculpture in
hardwoods and marble. She founded
an art center in Belmont and then
opened the Peninsula Museum of
Art, the first in San Mateo County.
In her spare time she has run 16
marathons and has become an avid
tennis player.

them. David French ’52 is living in Lake Oswego, Oregon. Patrick Luft ’56
and his wife have built their retirement home in the hills on the West Fork of
the Washougal River. Marian (Hailey) Moss ’58 has a new book coming out
this month via Amazon.com about “Randall the Chow:
I’m Just a Vegan Baby.” Mike Clancy ’58 sends thanks
to the Alumni Assoc. “for all we do.” He is sorry to have
missed his 1958, 50th class reunion—a family wedding
kept him away. He and his wife visited Jan and Bill
Treadwell ’58, at their horse farm in Boulder, Colorado.
They had a great time reminiscing. James “Rob” Allison
’59 lives with his wife, Donna, in Blind Bay, BC, having
retired from the Royal Bank of Canada in 1999, after 37
years served in BC, Hong Kong and Toronto. They live
on a golf course at home and winter in Hemet, CA.

Gindin ’62 (Sammamish HS) was a Grizzly until her parents moved to
Bellevue just before her senior year. She and husband Jim have been married
for 46 years, living in Northern California and now back in the Seattle
area. Franzula “Dolly” (Moody) Bacher ’62 lives in Phoenix, AZ. She
does some legal work, but keeps busier with three grandsons aged 9 to 14.
James “Jim” Nelson ’62 is currently living in southern California. Ronda
(Reese) Eddleman ’62 lives in southern California, Maui and Florida. Gary
Sivertsen ’62 has retired from the Boeing Employee Training organization
after 19 years, now living in University Place (Tacoma) and wintering in
Tucson, AZ. Diane (Sundt) Christie ’63 loves reading the KUAY. Thanks us
for the work. Frank Powley ’64, currently
lives near Copenhagen, Denmark, where
he has worked as a journalist since the mid
1970’s. Linda (Anderson) Wilson ’65 ran
the half-marathon (13.1 mi.) in Anaheim
last January. Sue (Renard) Robinson ’65 is
looking for friends from Coe School and QA.
She is living in Easton, WA. Stan Taloff ’66
joined the “500 Club.” His baseball team from
Archbishop Murphy High School, won their
16th win and his 500th career victory for him

different schools. Michael Clarke ’67 is retired
and living in England. Steven Orme ’67 is living in Carlsbad, CA (north San
Diego County) and is married to Linda Dance ’73. They have five children
and three grandchildren. General Peter Chiarelli ’68, has retired as Army
Vice Chief of Staff, the number two position in that service. He was honored
at a reception early this year.

Christian “Chris” Hendrickson ’68 has been living in Pittsburgh, PA for
over 30 years. Harry Brandes ’69 says hello. Jennifer (Jones) Pecknold
’69 is married to Cliff Pecknold ’67 (42 years) with two children, five
grandchildren. Kevan Smith ’69 lives in Fargo, ND with wife Priscilla. His
parents still live on Queen Anne – in their 90’s.
1970s: Dennis Conforto ’70 has lived in San Diego for 30 years with wife
Marie. Roxane “Roxie” (Eberlein) Jude ’70 says she is still
living happily in Seattle (Bitter Lake) and is happily in a
26-year marriage. George Gahagan ’70 is living near
the Olympic Mountains. M. Tony Feralio ’71 has two
grave plots at Evergreen-Washelli which he wants to sell.

interment. Cynthis “Cyndi” Lee ’71 has been living
in New York City since 1978; owns the OM Yoga
Center and teaches yoga all over the world. Vee
(Baxter) Harris ’72 works at the Archdiocese of
Seattle. Thomas “Tom” Berg ’72 has retired from
Boeing. He and his wife Sherri (Solberg)’73 live north of Tucson,
AZ. Barbara Burgess ’72 has special interests in photography and card
making. Debra “Debbie” Graham ’72 has worked with the phone company,
now CenturyLink, for 37 years. Margaret “Margie” (McIntosh) Robert
’72 is living in Bothell, WA. Lori (Klingensmith) Meldrum ’72 is living in
Edmonds for over 30 years. Richard Clark ’73 lives in Scottsdale, AZ. Drew
Miller Jr. ’73 lives happily with wife Judy in San Diego. Marshall “Scott”
Douglas ’74 is living in Aiken, SC. David Howard ’74 lives in Beaumont,
Texas, loving the sunny days. Dallas Lorain ’74 just moved back to Queen
Anne Hill from West Seattle. Working for the local phone company in Seattle
since 1977. Carl Lovgren ’74 lives in Edmonds with wife Jennifer. Gordon
“Gordy” Forguson ’75 has been in Federal Way for 16 years. Gary Hunter
’75 is a commercial real estate broker with “Commercial Mortgage,” and is
living on Queen Anne Hill. Barbara “Barb” (Read) Joseph ’75 is still living
in Seattle, selling residential real estate for over 25 years. Kathi Goertzen
’76 is continuing her years-long dance with meningioma brain tumors. She
has had nine surgeries since 1998, has lost some of her facial nerves and is
no longer broadcasting for KOMO 4 TV News. Her battles have brought her
over 72,000 Facebook followers and the admiration of all of Seattle. A lengthy
story in the May 12 Seattle Times tells her story of survival. We know you
join us in wishing her well. Brenda Matteson ’77 is living in Los Angeles.
Joan (Speer) Rogers ’77 is living near Tulsa, OK, 20 years now. Kathryn
“Katie” (Van Mason) Kusske ’77 is retired and enjoying living in University
Place, Tacoma. Denise (Ehrisman-Cripe) Sutton ’78 lives in Marysville
with husband Dennis. Sybie (Brown) Thorp ’78, who was written about in
the Feb. 2012 KUAY, succumbed to the cystic fibrosis which she fought all
her life. She died aged 31 in 1991. Her mother continued to live on Magnolia
until 2011 when she moved into senior housing. While cleaning out her home
she had a yard sale, which is where Sybie’s uniform was purchased and then
donated to us (info courtesy L.D. Zobrist). Nancy (Walker) Riddle ’78 lives
in Phoenix, AZ, but intends to return to Seattle this spring. Walter “Wally”
Rowe ’79 lives in Tacoma. Kathy Wright ’79 was on Jeopardy June 12 &13,
2012.
Thomas Allen – graduated as
valedictorian from JSerra Catholic High
School, San Juan Capistrano, CA with a
4.75 GPA and enrolled at the University
of Notre Dame this fall, majoring in
chemical engineering. His awards and
activities include AP Scholar With
Distinction, National Merit Commended
Student, Summa Cum Laude and Magna
Cum Laude National Latin Exam, varsity
baseball, cross-country and track. He is
the son of Tom and Suzanne Schuller
Allen ’80. He is awarded a Robert D,
Rois ’55 Scholarship in memory of his
wife Carol A. Rois.
Michaela Anderson
– a repeat winner, she
begins her sophomore
year at Central
Washington University
carrying a 3.8 GPA
majoring in law and
justice. Her awards
and activities include Quarterly Honor
Roll, Campus Ministry Club, University
Students for Life and varsity track. She
is the daughter of Rachelle and John
Anderson ’79. She is awarded the Hal
Will ’46 Memorial Scholarship.
Matthew Bowe – graduated from The
River Academy, Wenatchee WA with
a 3.8 GPA and enrolled at George Fox
University this fall as a pre-major. His
awards and activities include National
Merit Commended Scholar, varsity swim
team, lacrosse and Boy Scouts. He is
the son of Sara and Brian Bowe ’72,
and the nephew of Richard Bowe ’57,
Bruce Bowe ’62 and Steve Bowe ‘63.
He is awarded a McEachern Family
Scholarship.

We’ll
Make Pie
Hey! Does everybody remember the Queen Anne High
School Fight Song?
Queen Anne High School on the hilltop, yes, you bet
we’re here,
And we have our team here with us, nothing do we
fear - rah rah rah!!!
We’ll make pie of any high, oh, that will be a shame,
So fight, Grizzlies, Fight, Fight, Fight, we’ll win this
game!
When we got to the line about “we’ll make
pie” we’d turn to our friends standing next to
us, roll our eyes, and just try to finish the song
without cracking up. We didn’t want to make
pie out of Ballard – we wanted to pitch them
into the canal. We didn’t want to make pie out
of Garfield – we wanted to whack them with
a rolled up newspaper. With the creative minds that we
had going for us, it would have been very easy to come up
with some lyrics that more accurately expressed our true
feelings about those rivalries.
It would have been a lot more affirming to me if we
sang “We’ll stomp the fool out of your high school, oh,
that will be a shame,” Or maybe special words for each
school. How about “We’ll shove smelt up Roosevelt, …”
Or “We’ll coldcock that Sealth Seahawk,…”
You could do stuff like that at the college level. “Bow
Down To Washington” was originally written for the 1915
UW vs. Cal game, and it included the line “We’ll drag
that Golden Bear, from his filthy lair, and they’ll never
find his carcass in the morning.” But if we tried that in
high school even once, it would have been an instant
By Frank Emerson ’66 suspension. Or we would have been expelled. Or even
worse, we would have had to repeat Mister Beale’s math
class.
There was another option to overcome the political
correctness of the school administration, though. And
that was the pep buttons that we sold for the Activity
Room fund. But you had to be subtle, and timing was
everything. We came up with a new slogan for every
game, and after years and years of shaking their heads at
our attempts at originality, the faculty pretty
much stopped paying attention. We sensed
that, and we betrayed that trust. You had
to run into the Activity Room right at the
deadline, make things as hectic and confused
as possible, and get “Tommy” to approve the
request in the uproar (Miss Pauline Thomas,
later Mrs. George Farmer-ed.).
During my senior year alone, we got these buttons
printed up and on the market: “Spay The Bulldogs”,
“Heave On The Beavs”, “Spread The Eagles”, “Convert
The Quakers”, “Give It To The Indians”, “Flush The
Lincoln Logs” !
I’m just trying to get something started here, have some
fun, and turn this into a regular feature. Do you remember
some good stories about those old school rivalries? A
really good button? A prank? If you do, send them to me
at [email protected]. I’ll help you write them up and
we’ll get some of them into future KUAYs. I’ll make sure
that you get credit for the story.
Then again, if you’re still concerned about the statute
of limitations, we can keep it anonymous.

Rebecca Chohlas-Wood – a repeat winner, she has completed
her first year at the top of her class in the University of
Washington Medical School. Although her medical studies
preclude extensive volunteer effort, she has managed to
participate in three health related projects assisting low income

Edmund Wood. She is awarded a Don Estep ’46 Memorial

Beth Smith and the granddaughter of Virginia Bacheler ’35.

deceased friends.
Erika Larson – graduated from Kamiak High School with a
3.8 GPA and as of press time she had not selected a college. Her
activities include tutoring in the Academic Coaches program
and varsity basketball, serving as captain for two years. She is
the daughter of Brian and Janice Larson and the granddaughter
of Emily Jean McLean Bowman ’50. She is awarded the
Class of 1951 Scholarship.
Marielle Larson – begins her junior year this fall at the
College of William and Mary carrying a 3.92 and majoring
in business administration. She is the daughter of Brian and
Janice Larson and the granddaughter of Emily Jean McLean

Mackenzie McCoy – graduated from Puyallup High School
with a 3.94 GPA and enrolled at the University of Portland
this fall majoring in environmental science. Her awards
and activities include National Honor Society, President’s
Education Award, varsity swimming and water polo. She is the
daughter of Craig and Marilyn McCoy and the granddaughter
of Dorothy Lou Cowan ’44. She is awarded the Barbara

class of 432 students from Eastlake High
School, Sammamish WA, with a 4.0 GPA
and enrolled at Santa Clara University this

leader, DECA, ASB treasurer, varsity
basketball. He is the son of John and Karen
Mittenthal and the grandson of the late Art
Snyder ’54 and Jan Totten Snyder ’55. He
is awarded the Queen Anne High School
Alumni Association 30th Anniversary Scholarship.
Kelli Radcliffe – a 1980 Queen Anne graduate and a 1985
University of Puget Sound graduate, Kelli is returning to the
classroom to update her skills and has recently completed her
first quarter at North Seattle Community College with a 4.0
GPA. She is awarded the Maxine Amundson McMahan ’45
Trade and Vocational Scholarship.
Riley Nordin Sanders – graduated Magna
Cum Laude from Valdosta State College and
presently enrolled in Ross University Medical
School carrying a 4.0 GPA. He is the son
of Charles and Valerie Nordin Sanders and
the grandson of John P. Nordin ’43. He is
awarded a McEachern Family Scholarship.
Ian Shiach – a previous winner, he will begin
graduate school this fall at the University of
Arizona majoring in Natural Resources. He is

Notes About Another Scholarship Winner
Proud Grandpa Joe Ferluga ’49 sends word that
his granddaughter Dr. Elizabeth Ferluga, a 1999 QA
alumni scholarship recipient, has completed her four-year
neurology residency at Vanderbilt Medical Center, the last
year as chief resident. Liz was honored as the “outstanding
resident” by her fellow medical residents. She will now
be starting a two-year fellowship program at Vanderbilt.
That will put closure on years of medical education that
began after she graduated from Kennewick High School:
four years undergrad, four years medical school, two years
internship, four years residency and two years fellowship.
And to think it all began with a little boost from the QA Alumni!
Hunter Tyo – graduated from Ft. Myers High
School, Ft. Myers, FL with a 4.27 GPA and
enrolled at Arizona State University this fall
majoring in international business. A four
year International Baccalaureate student, he
is a member of the National Honor Society
and other student groups and was captain,
varsity baseball. He is the son of Teresa Marie
and James Tyo ‘67 and is awarded a McEachern
Family Scholarship.
Lindsay Ulbrickson – graduated from Juanita High School

at the University of Washington carrying a 3.8 GPA majoring
in communications. She continues on the Dean’s List, is
a Member of the UW Foundation’s Student Philanthropy
Council and active in her sorority, Chi Omega. She is the
daughter of Hugh and Jenny Wilson and the granddaughter of

This year 70 applications were received by the March
31st deadline. This year 16 scholarships were awarded
to high school seniors and 14 to college students.
Those interested in competing for a 2013 award should
download an application from the QA website next fall
and take great care to follow the completion instructions.
High school applicants must submit official transcripts
signed by their school’s registrar which must contain
their fall semester grades. Post high school applicants
must submit their high school, community college and
most recent college transcripts.
Anything less than an official, signed
transcript will disqualify the applicant
from competition.

With tables full, the QAHS Alumni Association Spring Luncheon was held
on a SUNNY (that’s right) Saturday at the Seattle Yacht Club on May 19,
2012. Alumni Association President Kim Turner ’61 welcomed attendees and
introduced the teachers present, as the association celebrated 30 years of the
alumni scholarship program.
Kerry McMahon ’54 emceed the scholarship celebration. He has guided
the program for most of its 30 years, beginning with 15 scholarships being
awarded in the first five years and growing to 160 given in the last five years.
Michael Bennett ’79 was the first recipient in September
of 1983. Michael is a graduate of Yale Divinity School,
and in his recent letter of appreciation, displayed at the
luncheon, noted that he has been serving as pastor at several
New England churches and has now become the pastor at
First Parish Church in Dover, New Hampshire—founded in
1603!
Lee Monteith ’47, in full marching band uniform and
playing “Pomp and Circumstance” on the clarinet, ushered
in four past and current scholarship recipients. They each
spoke briefly to acknowledge their appreciation.

anniversary of the scholarship awards. He attended Eastlake High School
and will be taking business and law studies at Santa Clara University.
Bob Johnston ’49, representing the Cantorians (wearing a maroon choir robe
with gold satin stole), beautifully sang, a cappella, “The Impossible Dream”.
The luncheon, of course, closed with the rest of the musical talent in the
room singing the Queen Anne Fight Song and the Alma Mater.
Special “thank you!” to Glo (Gleason) Holcomb ’46 for again producing
this event and for the table centerpieces and to Ruth (Hansen) Ghormley ’42
for the great table favors. Teacher Marvin Hartley
donated historic lunchroom tokens dating from
1910 given to him by Principal George Farmer.

The Death of Friends and Mentors

This last year has taken from me a number of Queen
Anne friends whose lives made mine richer.

QUEEN ANNE GOLF CLASSIC – APRIL 28TH –
WHITEHORSE GC, Kingston, WA
Twenty-five golfers, most of which were Queen Anne
High School grads, got together on a warm, spring day
recently for a little golf and a lot of fellowship and fun.
This was the first time that the MOQA organized
a golf event in the spring. The MOQA will continue
our tradition of hosting the Bob Houbregs QA Golf
Tournament in the fall at the Everett Country Club, see
details below.
Emmett Byrnes ’54 had a hole in one on the 4th hole,
a 178 yard Par 3. Way to go, Emmett!!! And he travelled
from Yakima for the event.

BOB HOUBREGS GOLF TOURNAMENT –
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 17TH
Asked back again, the 2012 Bob Houbregs Queen Anne
Golf Classic tournament will return to the Everett Golf
and Country Club on Monday, September 17th, and it will
be open to all golfers regardless of level. Staffed with
dedicated volunteers, the tournament always runs like a
fine Swiss watch. Afterward, the awards buffet banquet
will surely entertain those in attendance while prizes,
awards, and gag gifts are given away. You can attend
to play golf or just attend the Awards Banquet at the
conclusion of the tournament.
If interested in playing and have friends or family who
would like to play, you can sponsor a hole. Or if you want
to just hang out with fellow Grizzlies and would like to
attend the Awards banquet, then please contact Craig

The first was Helen Huycke Hill, my Spanish teacher
through three years of instruction and exposure to a
culture not my own, but one which I still treasure. She
was tall, dark haired, and one could easily picture her
with a lacy mantilla set on her head. She died shortly
after her 91st birthday, surrounded by her family. She is
greatly missed by those of us lucky enough to have been
her students.
The second loss is that of Shuzo Chris Kato, my
chemistry teacher, who was also a well-known sensei
to the many who studied martial arts under his training,
and he was a black belt master of the arts. There were
hundreds of attendees at the memorial service for him
last February after his death from the cancer which he so
nobly fought during the last several years.
Frances (Chapman) Farris ’35 was not only a blazing
star in the alumni association, but gave us the epitome
of “America’s High-School Sweetheart.” She died earlier
this year, and a memorial service for her has yet to occur.
I was lucky to call her friend. She knew my grandfather
and some of my cousins in Walla Walla. Her gifts of time
and energy on behalf of this association are legendary.
She gave us a lot of fun and voiced concerns when we
started to go astray. She is greatly missed.
Stuart Prestrud ’37 was both an alum and a
community leader. Although most of his career was
in banking, he was in the forefront of those whose
generosity is legendary. We had a mutual love of postage
stamps and libraries. The naming of the Queen Anne
Library meeting room in his honor was a timely and right
thing to occur.
David Ishii ’53 was a friend, comrade and mentor
in the world of book collecting and in baseball, fishing
and local history. We had been friends for the better
part of 40+ years, and it was always a joy to visit his
bookshop in Pioneer Square. It was the first bookstore in
which I felt no guilt if I failed to find a book to purchase.
We occasionally met during the SIFF and at other film
venues. His presidency of the Book Club of Washington
in the 1990s was a well-merited and fine term of focused,
friendly stewardship.
The last death is not one whom I knew, but for those
of you who were students in the late 50s at Queen Anne
High: Don Gallacher, teacher at Queen Anne High
School (1957-60), died on May 23, 2011.

’54 steps down. Craig will be looking at some new activities. Although it’s
