FROM THE
PRINCIPAL
Mr Mark Anderson B. A. Dip. Ed.
Merry Christmas: As this will be the last newsletter for the year I
would like to take this opportunity to wish all of the
Normanhurst Boys High School community a very Merry
Christmas and the happiest possible of New Years.
As the Christmas “silly season” begins and the weariness of the
year combines with hot weather and the demands of preparing
for Christmas, the coming weeks are often a challenging time of
year for many. Irrespective of the faith, religion or belief system
that underpins one’s view of life, and the world in general, there
are some behaviours and attitudes that remain pivotal to being
and remaining a happy and productive member of the
community. You hear so many requests for these things, in so
many forums, that they sound trite when you utter them –
compassion, high expectation, understanding, balance,
tolerance, acceptance of difference and respect. If you can
delve deeply enough into these trite utterances then the truth
does begin to materialise. If you can not only put the needs of
others before yourself, but also take time to rejoice when you
do, it will actually make you happier. The mindfulness that is
required to do this is unfortunately and very obviously more
difficult that it first appears. Having these values underpinning
our community philosophy is our strength. It is a tribute to our
boys, parents, teachers and staff that Normanhurst is such a
“thinking man’s paradise” and our expectation and experience
of associated behaviours and attitudes is so high.
If all I get for Christmas is a new tie or socks and the knowledge
that I get to work at Normo, then I will honestly consider myself
one of the luckiest men around. Thank you all for being part of
my Christmas present. Merry Christmas everyone.
Congratulations Julian Moore: Julian was a member of the State
Senior Wind Band for 2015 and performed outstandingly in the
two performances at the State Instrumental Festival. To have
earned the right to play with this talented group is testament to
Julian’s dedication and skill level.
Celebrating Student Success: Congratulations to all of our
award winners this year. The frequency and calibre of the
excellence that exists at Normanhurst is truly staggering. To all
of the boys who worked so hard to achieve the standard they
have this year, I congratulate you on working so diligently
towards your goal. For those who worked to capacity and did not
quite make the award ranks take time to reward yourself for
your hard work. The best reward for trying hard is just knowing
that you did your best- who could reasonably ask more of you?
If people are good only because they fear punishment, and
hope for reward, then we are a sorry lot indeed. Albert Einstein
Thank you to all of our organisers for their time in getting these
events up and running so smoothly. All of our Year Advisers and
Year Adviser Assistants worked exceeding hard on these events.
Thanks also to our Student Leaders and musicians who help
polish the events to showcase the extreme talent we have here
at Normanhurst.
Once again Presentation Evening was a triumph. Ms Venczel
and her hardworking team consisting of Ms Gan, Ms Menzies,
Ms Allen, Ms Fahey and alumnus Alexander Zhang spent weeks
getting this event together. Our music teachers and students
spent many hours rehearing their pieces and I also need to
acknowledge people like Mr and Ms Johnson, Ms Cousins, and
Mr Howell who spent hours bumping in and out for the event.
What a fantastic and positive way to end off what has been
another great year at Normanhurst. Who in their right mind
would want to be anywhere else?

Lip Sync Battle: Congratulations to our Student Leaders who
organised a battle for Lip Sync supremacy on Monday. I am
unsure who had more fun, the students or the staff. There are
some staff members and students who don’t need much
encouragement to get them to jump up on stage to perform.
Well done boys and staff, it was a really positive event enjoyed
by all.
Preloved Uniforms and Ties: Parents who have discovered that
their son has outgrown blazers, jumpers, trousers or shirts,
please consider packing them up and sending them to the front
office. It is amazing how many students need emergency
uniform items when then rip their trousers, lose their jumpers or
at times just cannot afford particular items. Year 10 parents I
would also urge you to donate the junior tie back to the school.
As part of our right-of-passage into the senior school we buy all
of the ties for the New Year 11s and present it to all students at
the Year 10 Graduation Assembly. If you gift the junior tie back
to us we will ensure that it goes to students who are in need.
Thanking you in advance. One last reminder that blazers are
currently on special with $50 of normal price. Please make the
most of this opportunity to save money and get your son ready
and looking sharp for 2016.
Items can be purchased online at the Normanhurst Boys Lowes
Page and delivered free if the purchase total is more than $100.
Congratulations Year 12: While I am feverishly trawling through
the results and attempting to make the newsletter this week at
the same time, I have just enough time to congratulate a few of
the top performing students in the HSC this year.
The following students achieved results in the top band possible
for at least 10 units of HSC courses: Dav Anand, Rohan Balani,
Antonio He, Raymond Hou, Ashkan Khoshab, Woody Lin, Ethan
Quan, Keita Richardson, Nethushan Sekaran and Max Sekula
Congratulations to Jonathan Choi (Senior Science) and Jash
Vanjara, (Society and Culture) who made the Top Achievers in
Course List. These boys are in the top places in a course.
While ATARS and the full results are not available to me at this
time I am sure our boys will achieve to capacity and have been
well placed to access the post- school destinations they all
require.
Swimming Carnival 2016: The annual swimming carnival is on
Monday, 1 February 2016 and so early in the year after the
break, I thought I might give parents an early “heads-up” for
their calendar. Next year the event will be held at the Hornsby
Aquatic Centre. Students are asked to meet at the pool for a
roll call at 8.30 a.m. A teacher will be waiting on the school oval
until 8.00 a.m. to walk with those students who are uneasy
about making their way to the pool by themselves. This group
will be escorted to and on the train and then walk with the
teacher to the pool. Attendance at all carnivals is compulsory.
Parents are very welcome as well. While we understand that not
all of our boys are swimmers, the day has far greater value than
just being a physical activity. It also fosters house spirit and a
sense of belonging to our school. The “Team Normo” philosophy
is central to all we do in terms of supporting our boys through
the rigors of the selective environment and this day, so early in
the term, is a great opportunity to begin the year positively as a
group. Everyone who can swim is expected to swim unless sick
or unfit to swim due to injury.
The admission fee has been included in your Carnival Levy
which is part of your school fees (notification of fees will be sent
home mid-term 1). Prompt payment of school fees early in the
year is appreciated. Canteen facilities are administered by the
Aquatic Centre but students are welcome to bring their own
food. Students will be dismissed at the end of the carnival at
Hornsby Pool at approximately 2.30 p.m. A group will be walked
back to school if they wish to be accompanied on the return
journey to Normanhurst. Please add this date to your calendar.
It is a great day which the boys generally love and get a great
deal from. A small number of boys do attempt to convince their
parents that carnival days are not compulsory and that they
would rather stay home and study. Please do not be misled.
Students who do wish to study can do so at the pool when they
are not competing if they so wish.

volunteers who sacrifice their personal and family time and help
in running these events so the fellow parents attending can
