Guided tour of Umeå
Besides being the largest city in northern Sweden, Umeå is also European capital of culture 2014. It has two
universities, an opera company (NorrlandsOperan) with its own symphony orchestra, museums famed for
sculpture and contemporary art and, for those who like the outdoor life, a host of exciting possibilities.
In 1622, King Gustav II Adolf gave Umeå town privileges. Growth thereafter was rapid. Sweden’s indigenous
population, the Sámi, carried out reindeer husbandry all the way down to the coast. Trade started to develop
and the enormous forest areas provided great potential for the growth of the timber industry. Umeå acquired
strategic importance in the economic and cultural growth of the entire region – from the northern border to the
Gulf of Bothnia.
Although several major fires hit the city, Umeå rose from the ashes time after time and continued to develop.
The birches that grow along the city’s streets have helped lead to Umeå being known as the “City of Birches”.
On a tour of the city, your guide will give details of how Umeå developed from a small village of just over one

Art and gardens
This tour shows off the art and sculpture in the city of Umeå. We visit Umedalen Skulptur, one of Europe’s
most beautiful sculpture parks with works by outstanding Swedish and international artists. With a current
collection of 35 sculptures, the park is always well worth visiting. This area also has IKSU Spa, the Bistro Le
Garage restaurant and Galleri Andersson Sandström (one of Sweden’s largest galleries).
We then continue to Arboretum Norr. This includes around 20 hectares of natural land where there are over
1,400 exotic ligneous (woody) plants from around 250 different species and cultivars. Arboretum Norr is a highly
agreeable encounter with nature in a beautiful part of the valley of the Umeälven river.
We also take a look at Grön Eld (Green Fire), the 45-tonne sculpture made from 3,000 glass sheets.
Nearby, there is Stationstunneln, an airy and bird-songed tunnel with quotations from the author Sara
Lidman.

contemporary art and visual culture. Its exhibitions include contemporary international art, photography

Västerbotten museum

Umeå. The museum offers a constant succession of temporary exhibitions and programmes. Here, you can
also stroll around old Västerbotten farmsteads and their associated agricultural buildings. In the summer, the
museum opens the doors of these farmsteads and stories of life in bygone days are told. Examples of events
during 2015 include special activities and tours taking in, amongst other things, the Sámi “vistes” (“camping
grounds” where the Sámi erect their lodges and storage huts), a historic Sámi market and handicrafts and
arts featuring Sámi symbols.

Bildmuseet on Umeå Arts Campus
Bildmuseet has established itself as one of Sweden’s most interesting stages for contemporary art and visual
culture. Its exhibitions include contemporary international art, photography and other forms of visual expression
– sometimes along with glances back into the past. The exhibitions are complemented by a rich programme of
talks, film screenings, performances and image workshops.
Besides exhibitions and programmes, there is also the public creative workshop and the museum shop. The first
of these provides “artistic instruction” for all ages and the second has a unique selection of art books and picture
souvenirs. On the bottom floor, adjacent to the museum, there is a café/restaurant and library with journals and
books on art, design and architecture.
In May 2012, the new museum building was opened on Umeå University’s Arts Campus, which is next to the
Umeälven river. Designed by Danish Henning Larsen Architects in collaboration with White, the building’s seven
floors offer fantastic views across the city and the city’s river.

During the summer, the Norrbyskär ferry operates a regular service every day. The crossing takes around 15
minutes.
Experiences at Olofsfors Bruk
Olofsfors Bruk is one of Sweden’s best-preserved industrial heritage sites and one of Västerbotten’s grandest
attractions. This iron mill’s history is recounted in various ways via exhibitions, guided tours and activities. At the
mill, the old smithies, the smelting house, the school, the mill wheel, the laundry rooms, the workers’ houses and
the manor house have all been preserved. These buildings host a wide range of operations – everything from
studios to a conference facility.
Next to the mill, there is an outdoor recreation area with trails for exercise, walking, horses and snowmobiles.
Here, you can experience our fantastic countryside with its winding meanders and sandy banks.
A weekend in a historic setting
Spend an unforgettable 24 hours at Olofsfors’ historic iron mill. The visit begins with lunch at the mansion
house and an introduction to the mill and its history. Each visitor receives reference materials and a map of the
complex.
In a guided tour of the mill, we learn a little about the mill’s environments. Our skilful guide gives details of
life at the mill and how everything worked. After 1.5 to 2 hours, the tour ends and coffee and home-baked
pastries/cakes are served at Kafé Anno 1762.
In the afternoon, there is time to explore the mill on your own, visit the shop and drop in on any of the
craftspeople who are present.
Dinner at the mansion house comprises a three-course meal made from first-class ingredients. A sauna is a
further possibility.
In the fantasy inspiring setting of the old smelting house and blast furnace, the evening offers music and
entertainment.
The overnight stay is spent at Olofsfors Herrgård (the mansion house).
Following breakfast in the mansion house, we visit one of the mill’s many craftspeople. Here, we try out a
craft and learn a little of the technique. A large number of different crafts are on show in the mill’s smithies and
studios.
The visit ends with lunch at the mansion house.

Antiques and second-hand
trip
Join us on a journey full of finds, antiquities and handicrafts in quintessentially Västerbotten settings! With both
visit-worthy and shopping-friendly destinations, this trip has all the ingredients of success. Naturally enough,
good food in pleasant surroundings adds extra “spice”.
At Stenfors Gård in Ånäset, besides visiting a flea market and halls full of antiques, we also take refreshments
at Café Giraff. Do not miss the show garden and the apple grove with its 30 or so varieties of apple. The trip
then moves on to Andra Varvet, an extremely popular second-hand shop in the harbour setting of Sikeå. Our

Sámi now and before
Granö Beckasin is located in the village of Granö in the municipality of Vindeln, 75 km from Umeå. Granö is an
idyll surrounded by Västerbotten’s beautiful countryside and with views over the quiet waters of the Umeälven
river.
In a typical Sami tent, you will meet with the Sámi man Jesper which takes you on a journey into their
culture. You will learn how to build and what life would be like in such a hut and that nomadic life only
worked when they kept to strict procedures, customs and practices. At the same time, you will
experience the Sami cuisine and get to try some special culinary specialties.

Västerbotten cheese – from farm to table in the cheese kingdom!
In the early 1870s in Burträsk, dairymaid Ulrika Eleonora Lindström made the “mistake” of a lifetime. It resulted
in Västerbotten cheese, an “emperor amongst cheeses”. Using Ulrika Eleonora’s original recipe, this cheese is still
made today at the Burträsk dairy. Once it has been made, each Västerbotten cheese is sent to Ostens Lager (the
“Cheese Store”) where it is allowed to mature and gain its distinctive flavour. Follow it along its way from farm to
table in the cheese kingdom.
Ängesbäckens Lantbruk is a large and modern ecological farm with around 300 head of livestock. It
produces up towards 5,000 litres of milk every day. This is one of the farms that provides the milk for
Västerbotten cheese. Learn a little about the life of the farm’s cows and enjoy a thrilling experience that
gives an entirely new perspective.
To acquire the right taste, consistency and structure, Västerbotten cheese is stored for at least 12 months. At
Ostens Lager in Ånäset, visitors can follow storage all the way from the cheese arriving from the Burträsk dairy
to it being ready for delivery a full year later. Seeing around 140,000 cheeses stored row after row is impressive.
Besides an exhibition on past and present dairy processing, the “Cheese Store” also has a café. Furthermore,
Västerbotten cheese can be bought directly from the store.
If there is time, it may additionally be possible to visit Burträsk dairy. This is the only place in the world where
Västerbotten cheese can be produced. Directly adjacent to the dairy, there is Västerbottensost besökscenter
(Västerbotten cheese visitor centre) with its exhibition on Västerbotten cheese. This covers almost everything
about production of the cheese (secret recipe excluded!), its history and the myths that surround it. Activities
such as cheese tasting and small-scale cheese production can also be booked. The café serves dishes that use
this famous cheese.

Farm visit with lunch and activities
The farm is a popular outing that offers unique experiences in an attractive environment with grazing animals
and good food. We start the visit with a presentation that gives details of the farm’s operations and includes a
couple of films. Next, we go on a tour and meet the farm’s animals. Two activities are included, for example, a
“treasure hunt” and sheepdog trials. For lunch, you can choose between unique dishes such as salmon prepared
in a wok and special meatloaf. There is also a dessert.
This leave time for shopping in the farm’s shop. Besides its own produce, this also has wares from other local
producers.

The Seven Rivers Art Route
The Seven Rivers Art Route (Konstvägen Sju Älvar) is a 350-km long art exhibition. It runs between Holmsund in
the east and Borgafjäll in the west (in the mountains of southern Lappland). A trip along the route invites you to
experience 12 different works of art, many cultural heritage sites and fantastic closeness to Mother Nature. The
Art Route passes the Vindelälven, Umeälven, Öreälven, Lögdeälven, Gideälven and Ångermanälven rivers. At the
route’s furthest point in southern Lapland’s mountains, you will also see the Saxälven river.

At Torvsjö kvarnar, there is one of northern Europe’s most remarkable collections of water-powered plants. It
has mill wheels, a threshing barn, a saw, a planer, grinding stones and an electricity generator. Employing great
ingenuity, everything was hand built by Torvsjö’s farmers. An exhibition in the heritage centre at this Torvsjö
attraction reveals how people lived in inland Västerbotten. Torvsjö kvarnar is now national heritage listed.

In Björnlandet National Park, you encounter magnificent
wilderness and one of Sweden’s most valuable primeval
forests. Steep and vertical slopes punctuate the undulating
upland terrain. At 550 m, Storberget’s peak is the park’s

Old Sámi camping grounds in Storviken
Wander to the various camping grounds and experience Sutme Lappläger, an over 200 year old habitation where,
up until the 1970s, Sámi used to live all year round. Sense the mystery of the sacrificial site, enjoy the views and

Alpine challenges in the Umeå
region
The Umeå region has a large selection of alpine ski slopes that are open throughout the season (December to
April). Within a one-hour car/bus ride from Umeå, there are several fine skiing centres offering well prepared
slopes and various degrees of difficulty. Alpine ski equipment can be hired at these centres, where cross-country
skiing is yet a further possibility. There are also refreshment facilities close to all the slopes.
Buberget, Vindeln’s time-honoured winter sports centre, has challenges for everyone! It offers both beginners’
and advanced slopes. In total there are five descents and four lifts. One of these is a children’s/button lift.
Agnäsbacken in Bjurholm is perhaps the region’s most complete hill. Its slopes suit the youngest to the most
experienced downhillers.
Middagsberget in Vännäs is a family centre with two slopes. It is famous for its snowboard slope and there is
also an awesome superpipe here.
Checking in at a hotel in Umeå is the start of your trip. The afternoon and evening are then free for shopping
and Umeå’s hurly-burly. After a sumptuous breakfast the following morning, we set off for Buberget in Vindeln
(or Agnäsbacken in Bjurholm or Middagsberget in Vännäs) and devote the day to skiing. Refreshments can be
booked in advance or bought on the day from the café/restaurant at the slope. At 15.00 we return to Umeå for
an overnight stay or the journey home.

Play golf in the Umeå region
There are six golf courses in the region. For those keen to experience a little variety, we have selected three
with differing characters. You can stay at any of Umeå’s hotels.
Umeå golf club has 27 holes (an 18-hole and a 9-hole course) in a rolling forest setting. It is in Sweden’s top
class. There is a restaurant, a well-stocked golf shop, a swing studio, a golf range, a practice area and simple
accommodation. Founded in 1954, the course is considered to be one of the most beautiful in Norrland.
Bjurholm golf club offers an 18-hole course in a rolling, agricultural setting. The course’s architect Peter Nordwall has created something that, while having its own distinctive character, is reminiscent of Scottish heathland.
This is a course where thinking players can do well against those who merely hit long.
Norrmjöle golf club has a first-class 18-hole course that meanders through admirably rolling pine heathland
interrupted by rocky outcrops and small lakes. The well-drained sandy soil and the electrically heated greens
enable an early start to the golf season.

The Konstvägen race
The Konstvägen (“Art Route”) ski race is one of Sweden’s classics. It runs between Fredrika and Balsjö (45 km).
There is also an alternative stretch between Övre Nyland and Balsjö (20 km). A glorious winter experience for
skiers and spectators alike. The race helps determine seedings for the Vasaloppet and Tjejvasan races.

The highly imaginative snow sculptures along Rådhusesplanaden have become an extremely popular
tradition. W orking on a set theme, participating teams turn a snow cube into a sculpture. Voting decides

Umeå Open
House of Metal is a two-day indoor festival focusing on various genres of metal music. Every year, around 25
bands from Sweden and all around the world perform on the festival’s stages (three main stages and one for
cover bands).
Umeå Open is Sweden’s largest indoor festival for pop and rock. Both national and international stars come here.

Sámi week
Nolia Trädgård
Throughout Sámi week, the city is full of music, dance, theatre,
exhibitions and talks revolving around and showcasing Sámi culture.
The Sámi are an autochthonous people and the oldest native people
in the Nordic countries. From October to April, the Umeå region forms
part of the Sámi’s reindeer husbandry area.
Nolia Trädgård is an exhibition devoted to gardening. Held first in 2012, it attracted a staggering 5,900 visitors

Rounders Cup

Swedish Beach Tour
Swedish Beach Tour is one of Sweden’s largest beach volleyball events. Sweden’s elite players take on foreign

New Year sparkle over Umeå
Rådhusparken (the town hall park) is the venue for Umeå’s public New Year celebrations. The programme starts
