f you ask any of our volunteers
the same question, you might
get a similar response. That is,
there is never loss of conversation
when leading with the question,
“What do you want from healthcare
services in your community?”
I will ask you the same. What
do you want from healthcare
services in your community? I
challenge you to give this serious
consideration.
Now, step back and ask
yourself a second and more basic
question. How do you define
health? Many of you might respond
that health is maintenance of
your physical body. You might say
it is a three step process.... If you
don’t stay well, you get sick, get a
diagnosis, and get treatment.
The World Health Organization
(WHO) defines health as a ‘state
of complete physical, mental, and
social well-being, and not merely
the absence of disease or infirmity.’
This definition is comprehensive,
going well beyond the physical
body. The definition of health
is human-based, including the
concept of overall well-being.
Enter Southeast Alabama
Medical Center Foundation.
Our organization focuses on
comprehensive human need.
Our focus is on helping one
patient, one family at a time. We
have succeeded when we have
improved quality of healthcare
from beginning to end. We believe
when we have improved service
for one, we are well on the path
to improving quality of service for
all. Together with our partners
at Southeast Alabama Medical
Center, the Alabama College of
Osteopathic Medicine and Medical
Center Barbour, we know we are
part of a greater equation. That is
outcome + outcome = impact on
community.
Once again, I offer hearty
thanks to those who have joined
our efforts. You have helped
us identify and isolate many
immeasurable needs. For
seven years, we have enjoyed
opportunities to work in lockstep
with you - our generous,
compassionate donors – to build
solutions that address these needs.
If you are just learning of the
Foundation, I ask that you consider
partnering with us! Lock arms
with our team to sustain a true
“healing zone” around the areas
serviced by SAMC and its affiliates.
Partner with us so that we continue
to enhance healthcare. Only with

generosity of its donors, the
SAMC Foundation gifted
$1,211,702 to the Southeast
Alabama Medical Center
and the Alabama College of
Osteopathic Medicine in 2014
for the following projects:

uality healthcare is a key
component in making a
community attractive to
individuals and businesses. And
someday, you or someone you
love will need healthcare services.
Southeast Alabama Medical Center
Foundation is committed to helping
ensure health and wellness services
and programs are available when
they are needed.
During 2014, the SAMC
Foundation allocated $1.2 million
in grant funding to assist in the
advancement of healthcare provided
by Southeast Alabama Medical
Center and its affiliates. SAMC
received $368,000 in funding to
meet various current needs and the
Alabama College of Osteopathic
Medicine received $836,256 to
launch the ACOM Research Center.
“We are humbled by the
continued and generous support
of our donors, and proud that the
Foundation is able to have a positive
impact on the lives of patients,
families and the communities
served by SAMC,” said Valerie
Barnes, SAMCF executive director.
She noted that the Foundation has
provided over $2.1 million in grants
to SAMC since opening its doors
in 2007. Funding for the launch
of medical research at ACOM
was made possible as a result of
donations received during the What
If? Capital Campaign for the new
college.
At $100,000, SAMC’s new
Palliative Care Program received
the largest grant provided to the
hospital. The program which
provides specialized medical care

for those with chronic illnesses
and diseases, had already served
more patients in the early weeks of
operation than were projected to be
served in the first year.
“We saw the opportunity to
provide seed money to start the
Palliative Care Program as a wise
investment in our goal to support
the delivery of quality healthcare,”
Barnes said. “The SAMC caregiving team now has an additional
impactful way to help our patients
and their families when facing a
serious illness,” she added.
