In 1948, Mr Harold Ridley, consultant ophthalmologist at St Thomas’ Hospital and
Moorfields Hospital, London, together with John Pike of the Rayner Company met
privately to discuss a new project. Ridley called this project the ‘artificial lenticulus
project’ and asked Pike for Rayner’s help in the design and manufacture of an
implantable lens.
Perspex was chosen as the preferred material for its good optical properties and
because it had been shown to be inert within body tissues. On the 29th of November
1949 at St Thomas’ Hospital, Ridley performed the first IOL operation on the eye of a
45-year-old female patient. The operation was done in two stages with the artificial lens
permanently implanted three months later.
With the help of prominent ophthalmic surgeons from around the world, Rayner has
continued to innovate and manufacture new IOL designs. New materials, lens packaging
and delivery injector systems offer improved ease of use, reduced need for manipulation
and better post-operative results.
Today, Rayner lenses are used globally, including some of the poorest countries on earth.
Rayner remains inspired by Ridley’s original decision, taken with John Pike, to make the
IOL widely available to all of humanity.

First refractive IOL for high myopia introduced.
1956
Rayner introduced the Choyce MkI,
Peter Choyce’s modification of Strampelli’s
anterior chamber lens design.
1979
The pioneering surgeons formed the
Intraocular Implant Club (IIC)
with Ridley and Pike.
1962
Work began with Binkhorst on his four-loop iris
fixation design. Fyodorov’s modification and
Binkhorst’s two-loop design followed
Choyce MkVIII and MkVIX
anterior chamber designs
became the first lenses to be
approved by FDA.
1975
The first, modern, posterior chamber lens
design was developed with John L. Pearce.
An agreement with Coburn allowed USA
to manufacture lenses.

Rayner has been at the forefront of advances in IOL design that have involved the
application of wavefront technology to improve optical efficiency and visual function.
The ability to measure Higher Order Aberrations has led to a better understanding of
the eye as an optical system and the development of a new category of IOLs – aspherics
– which are capable of providing an excellent quality of vision.
Rayner IOLs are manufactured with AVH Technology for centration and stability and the
Amon-Apple enhanced square edge for reduced PCO.

The C-flex Advance Aspheric (ADV970) is Rayner’s first preloaded IOL delivery system.
C-flex Advance Aspheric offers the monofocal cataract surgeon the reassurance of a
minimal touch delivery system, via a mini incision, and combines the benefits and
superior, clinically proven patient outcomes of the aberration neutral C-flex Aspheric IOL.
The C-flex Advance Aspheric provides simple and controlled IOL delivery by a singlehanded technique. The IOL can be delivered through a 2.2mm clear corneal wound mini
incision or a 2.4mm clear corneal incision direct into the capsular bag.

HOYA Toric Calculator
The Hoya Toric Calculator (HTC) is a resource to aid in proper IOL cylinder power
selection for cataract patients with corneal astigmatism.
The HTC requires the user to input patient biometric data and planned surgery
information that is part of an ophthalmic work up prior to toric IOL (TIOL) implantation.
The HTC will suggest several Hoya toric IOLs from which the surgeon may choose to
treat a patient’s refractive cylinder resulting from corneal astigmatism. The HTC will also
provide suggested intra-operative axial placement of the IOL that is intended to minimize
post-operative astigmatism based on the information provided.
The HTC is openly accessible on the internet for all users.
After the complete data set is entered, the graphic image of the eye will update to show
the entered data values. The calculator will also automatically generate three toric lens
options of different cylinder power for the user to consider. Astigmatic correction will be
calculated for all toric lens powers and a non toric lens as well.
The HTC will also inform the user of the recommended axis for toric IOL placement and
will include an image of the eye with the incision location, steep and flat corneal axes,
and the axis of placement for the toric IOL.
