MINISTERIAL WELCOME MESSAGE –
MOUNT ISA RODEO
Welcome to the Mount Isa Rodeo – another great Outback
Queensland experience on the State’s dynamic and growing
events calendar.
Tourism is one of the four pillars of the Queensland economy. A
key theme of the recently launched Destination Success 20-year
plan for Queensland tourism is to identify and promote iconic
experiences throughout Queensland’s many destinations.
By working hand-in-hand through an industry-government
partnership, we have a plan to secure the long term future of
Queensland's tourism industry.
The government is proud to support the Mount Isa Rodeo through
Tourism and Events Queensland, recognising the importance
of events in driving visitors to regional areas and showcasing
Queensland’s destination experiences.
MT ISA MINES ROTARY RODEO
Events like this are not only a source of community pride, they also bring social and economic
benefit to the host community and will assist us to reach our goal to double annual overnight visitor
expenditure from $15 billion to $30 billion by 2020.
2
The Mount Isa Rodeo is supported through Tourism and Events Queensland’s Regional Development
Program, which to date has invested more than $23.5 million across 1,091 Queensland events.
I would like to thank the local community, volunteers and event organisers for their terrific efforts in
delivering this event for Outback Queensland.
The Hon. Jann Stuckey
QUEENSLAND MINISTER FOR TOURISM, MAJOR EVENTS,
SMALL BUSINESS AND THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES
WELCOME – MAYOR OF MOUNT ISA
The Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo is one of the biggest jewels in the crown
of this fantastic city, and an event celebrated by all residents young and old.
Mount Isa is known as the premier mining city of Australia, but every August
it becomes known for much more than that – this world-class rodeo propels
it into one of the greatest tourist destinations in the country.
The Rodeo brings more than 20,000 people through the gates to celebrate
the event, with almost half of those being visitors to our region.
Coming from all corners of the globe, the rodeo brings people together, and
when they leave, they leave as ambassadors for Mount Isa, the great mining
city, and rodeo capital of Australia. This is a magnificent event, and a true taste of life in the outback.
As Mayor of this great city it is my pleasure to invite all residents, visitors, kids, and cowboys to saddle
up and enjoy the ride this year at the great 2014 Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo.
GOLD AND NAMING RIGHTS
PARTNER
WELCOME – MOUNT ISA MINES
ROTARY RODEO MANAGER
Mount Isa Mines has been a proud supporter of
the Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo since the beginning.
After 55 years of thrills, spills, and some of the
best rodeo action in the world, we’re excited to
return once again as the naming rights sponsor of
the 2014 Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo, which this
year promises to be bigger and better than ever!
It’s been an incredible ride since returning to my
home town of Mount Isa to take up the reins as
Manager for the Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo.
I love the community spirit rodeo brings. From its
humble beginnings in 1959 it has grown into an
award-winning event. I’m amazed at the support
given by our very generous sponsors, many of
whom have been sponsoring for more than ten
years, some since its inception! And our amazing
band of 670 volunteers and Rotarians who all
contribute to make this event happen. There’s
lots of new initiatives this year. One close to my
heart is the launch of the Isa Rodeo School with
APRA in the lead up to the event. Other new
activities include rodeo arts and crafts for the
kids, gold pass seating, tourism expo with the
mardi gras and an unprecedented number of live
music acts to support the non-stop rodeo action
in the arena, market stalls and sideshow alley.
This weekend, all eyes will be on Isa as thousands
of avid fans converge on the ‘Rodeo Capital
of Australia’. And it’s no wonder – with more
than 500 of the country’s best riders lining up
for more than $200,000 in cash and prizes, the
Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo is the largest and
richest rodeo in the southern hemisphere.
Good luck to all this weekend’s competitors, and
spectators hold onto your hats – welcome to the
2014 Mount Isa Mines Rotary Rodeo!

you enjoy the 2014 Rodeo as much as we do!

RODEO FACTS & FIGURES
The first event held in 1959 attracted more
than 3,000 people including 120 nominations
competing for 500 pounds.
Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness
The Duke of Edinburgh attended a “Mini Rodeo“
in 1970 hosted by the Isa Rodeo in honour of their
visit to Mount Isa.
Today, approximately 25,000 people attend
the three day rodeo program, attracting around
600 nominations with up to $200,000 in prizes
made up of cash and buckles.
The Isa Rodeo is the biggest and richest event
of its kind in the southern hemisphere and the
3rd largest rodeo in the world.
During Rodeo, visitors will eat 16,000 buckets of
hot chips; 13,000 burgers; 9,500 pizzas and 6,000
steak sandwiches – all washed down with 70,000
beers; 62,000 bottles of water and 55,000 premixed spirits.
Nearly $4 million has been donated back
to charities, cultural and sporting groups in
Mount Isa and the North West with more than
600 volunteers working at this year’s event.
More than 600 animals will take centre stage
during the weekend. But no beasts have ever
matched the legendry of Blondie and Chainsaw
– the most famous Isa Rodeo champion
feature stock.
MT ISA MINES ROTARY RODEO
The youngest person to compete at the Isa Rodeo
to date is a 7-year-old Junior Barrel Racer and the
oldest is 80 years in the Over 55s Team Roping.
4
The Isa Rodeo is the proud winner of more than
12 tourism awards and most recently won the
Festival & Events section of the 2013 Queensland
Tourism Awards and finalist in the Festival &
Events category of the 2013 Australian Tourism
Awards. The event was voted 13th in the Events
& Festivals category of Queensland’s favourite
Q150 Icons Awards.
The Isa Rodeo is listed as one of the
100 things to do before you die in Australian
Traveller Magazine.

AROUND TOWN
ZONTA BUSH POETS BREKKY
// WED 6TH AUG – 6.30AM
The event is named in honour of the late Wally
Mailman – a champion rough rider, rodeo judge
and racing steward in Mount Isa.
Wally was a keen horseman who worked
on numerous stations throughout
north-west Queensland and made a
significant contribution to the racing and
rodeo industries. He is also the father of
Secret Life of Us personality and actress
Deborah Mailman.
The Mailman Express is held at the Buchanan
Park Race Club. Gates open at 12 noon
with races starting at 7pm. Tickets can be
purchased at the gate on the day.
Rodeo Fever hits Mount Isa early with
local businesses around town getting their
cowboy on for the MIGATE Best Dressed
Premises Competition.
Just a short walk around the Mount Isa CBD
and you’d be forgiven for thinking the town had
gone a tad barmy! Symptoms include rodeo
themed shop fronts, paisley shirts in place of
uniforms and don’t be surprised if you see the
odd bale of hay in foyers.
Businesses spend months planning for the
competition often hand-crafting decorations
for customers and passers-by to enjoy. This
year’s theme is “Flying Doctor Country:
Celebrating 50 Years in the Isa”.

This comedy act has been endorsed by one critic
as, “as politically incorrect as you can get”. The
2011 ARIA nominated Buddy Goode definitely
stretches the boundaries. His new material
is daring, outrageous and incredibly catchy.

RODEO 101
THIS IS “MAN AGAINST BEAST” THE BEST AUSTRALIAN
AND INTERNATIONAL COWBOYS VERSUS OUR
ROUGHEST STOCK, HEAD-TO-HEAD FOR THREE DAYS OF
WORLD CLASS RODEO ACTION.
The Isa Rodeo features eight major events – Saddle
Bronc, Bareback, Bull Riding, Steer Wrestling,
Rope & Tie, Team Roping, Ladies Barrel Racing and
Ladies Breakaway Roping, as well as Local Station
Buckjump and Poddy Rides.
MT ISA MINES ROTARY RODEO
SADDLE BRONC
18
As the rider leaves the chute, he must synchronise
his spurring action with the horse’s bucking and stay
on for eight seconds. The rider is judged on his style
and spurring action and disqualified if he touches
the horse or equipment with his free hand, loses a
stirrup or bucked off before the end of the ride.
BAREBACK BRONC
With only a leather pad and a handle, the rider
must hold on with one hand for eight seconds.
As the horse bucks, he jerks his feet towards the
wither, snapping them back into position in front of
the shoulder ready for the next jump. The rider is
judged on his spurring action and disqualified if he
touches the horse, himself or equipment with the
free hand or bucked off before the end of the ride.
BULL RIDING
Fast, furious and dangerous. The rider holds
on with one hand and must stay on the bucking
bull for eight seconds. Both animal and rider
are judged – the rider on his style and the bull’s
ability to buck the rider before the buzzer. The
rider uses his feet to pull into position or hold
himself upright while the bull is spinning and
disqualified if he touches the bull or equipment
with his free hand.
STEER WRESTLING
With the use of a helper or hazer riding alongside
of the steer to keep it running straight, the rider
must lean from his horse and grasp the steer’s
horns. The rider then dismounts the horse
and uses his feet to stop the steer’s forward
momentum before rolling the steer to the
ground. The clock is stopped once the steer is
on its side with all four legs pointing in the same
direction. Winning times are under five seconds
from when the barrier is released.
The calf is given a head start before the rider gives
chase. From horseback, the rider ropes the calf
and dismounts, rolling the calf on one side and
tying three of the calf’s legs together. The time
is recorded once the tie is complete. The rider
remounts his horse to prove the tie will hold – no
time is given if the animal kicks free. The rider
is disqualified and fined if the animal is pulled
backwards off his feet or dragged after it is roped.
TEAM ROPING
RODEO 101
ROPE & TIE
Featuring a two-rider team, the steer is given a
head start. The header ropes the steer around
the neck, head or horns before the heeler moves
in to rope the hind legs. The rope is then dallied
around the saddle horn. Once secured, time is
recorded when both horses are facing each other
with no slack in the rope. Winning times are
around eight seconds. Improper catches result
in disqualification and five second penalties are
incurred if only one leg is roped.
LADIES BARREL RACING
Competing against the clock, the rider guides her
horse around a clover leaf pattern of three 205L
drums. Time penalties are imposed for knocking
over a barrel and disqualification for running
in an incorrect pattern. The rider may hold the
barrel from the riding position to prevent her
from falling. Time is taken by an electric eye to
the hundredth of a second.
After a head start, the rider gives chase and
catches the calf with a rope attached to the
saddle horn with a ribbon. Once the catch is
made, the horse slides to a halt, the rope breaks
away from the saddle horn and the clock stops. A
piece of coloured cloth is attached to the end of
the rope to assist the judges in seeing and timing
the break.
PODDY RIDES
Poddy Rides is an event for riders aged eight to
13 starting out in their rodeo careers. Similar
to bull riding, the rider is strapped down to the
poddy with one hand using a bull rope. The free
hand must be raised at all times without touching
the poddy or himself. While not compulsory, the
rider may pick up extra points if he spurs. The
rider must stay on the poddy for six seconds.

THE LINGO
IF YOU’RE NEW TO THE
WORLD OF RODEO,
HERE’S THE A TO Z GUIDE
OF CLASSIC RODEO LINGO.
ARM JERKER - a really stout animal that
bucks with a lot of power.
BUCKING CHUTES - an enclosure where
contestants get on their drawn bucking horse
or bull.
CATCH AS CATCH CAN - any catch is legal
(around neck, body, back legs).
COMMUNITY LOOP - throwing an
exceptionally large loop.
CROSS FIRE - the heeler throws his rope
before the header has changed direction of
the steer.
DALLIED - the action of wrapping a lasso
around a saddle horn after a calf or steer has
been roped.
DOGFALL - a steer’s head facing in the opposite
direction of his body with his feet caught under
him. Rider must re-throw the steer.
DRAGGER OR TROTTER - a steer that
hangs his head and doesn’t run after being
roped, many times trotting or stopping.
FADING - a bull that spins and slowly gains
ground in the direction he is spinning.
MT ISA MINES ROTARY RODEO
FLOATER - a horse with little power, jumping
with all four feet up floating through the air.
20
FULL LICK - spurring from the point of the
horse's shoulder to the back to the cantle of
his saddle.
HAT BENDER - an animal that doesn’t buck.
HAZER - a cowboy who rides along the right
hand side of the steer keeping it running in a
straight line. This makes the steer wrestler's
job easier when jumping from his horse.
HEAD HUNTER - a bull that looks for
someone to charge.
LAP & TAP - no barrier is used.
LOUNGER - a horse that thrusts with hind
feet forward rather than kicking out behind.
MARK OUT - the rider must have both feet
over the point of the horse’s shoulders before
the horse’s front feet hit the ground.
MASH UP - clamping onto the horse with
both legs and having no spurring action.
MONEY BARREL - the first barrel in barrel
racing. A good first barrel sets the rider up for
a good pattern.
OUT THE BACK DOOR - when a rider is
thrown off over the hind end of the animal.
PANTYHOSE - the heeler has roped the heels
and the rope passes beyond the steer’s hocks
and catches up under both flanks of the steer.
PULLING LEATHER - grabbing hold of
the saddle.
RAKE - spurring action.
RANK - an animal that is difficult to ride.
SCOOTER - pivoting on the front end with no
real kicking action from the back.
SOFT - an easy animal to ride or compete on.
SPURRING LICK - getting in rhythm with the
bucking action of the animal.
STAR GAZER - a horse that bucks with his
head up making it difficult for the rider to keep
the slack out of his hack rein and to balance.
SUCKS BACK - an animal suddenly changes
the direction in which it was bucking.
SUN FISHER - the animal twists his body in
the air so that daylight shines on his belly.

ANIMAL CARE
We have a long and proud history of rodeo as a
sport in Australia. Based on the work practices
of Australian Stockmen, the sport emulates the
skills required for handling
livestock on traditional cattle
properties. A key part of the
Isa Rodeo’s reputation for
providing outstanding rodeo
competition, year after year,
is based on our respect and
commitment to the welfare
of the livestock. As with any
sport, human or animal, peak
performance is only achieved
through proper care and
good health. We believe our
animals will perform their
best when they are happy, healthy and in top
condition. As a result, the Isa Rodeo has some of
the highest animal welfare standards guided by
the Australian Professional Rodeo Association
(APRA) Animal Welfare Code of Conduct.
events. The roping device works as a “shock
absorber” to lessen the force experienced
by both the horse and the calf, when the calf
is roped. Similar to abseiling equipment, it is
made from high strength anodised aluminium
and attached to the rider’s saddle horn. The
lasso rope is threaded through the device
with a backstopper knot to prevent the rope
from running through the end. The device has
demonstrated high durability during all field
testing and proven to reduce the impact by up to
75 per cent. The roping device has been endorsed
by all major Rodeo Associations in Australia as a
standard minimum equipment requirement for
competition in all Australian-based rodeo rope
and tie events.

HOW OFTEN ARE
ANIMALS INJURED?
22
A survey conducted by the APRA showed the
injury rate for animals used in rodeos throughout
Australia is 0.072 per cent. Our target for the Isa
Rodeo is zero animal injuries for each event. Just
in case, we have a qualified veterinarian on hand.
More often than not, the rider comes off second
best, so we have paramedics on hand too. We
also ensure our livestock are specifically bred
and trained for the rodeo arena and comply with
changes to competition rules.
ROPING DEVICE
Recently, we have introduced the Ropersmate™
roping device – a unique product developed in
consultation with industry to reduce the risk of
injury on both horses and cattle during rodeo
FLANK STRAPS
Unlike popular belief, a
beast’s bucking action is
not caused by pain inflicted
from the flank strap wrapped
around the animal’s genital
area. The lined portion of
the flank strap must be
positioned over the flank and
belly of the animal. It must
also be covered with sheep
skin or other suitable material and fitted with
a quick release. At no time does the flank strap
come in contact with the genitals and is rarely
pulled tighter than your trouser belt.
ELECTRIC PROD
We do not use electric prods on animals in the
arena or where it is unable to move in response
to the prod such as the chutes. Prods can only be
powered by dry cell batteries, as used in torches,
must be used with restraint and restricted to
the minimum amount necessary. Prods can only
be used by stock contractors or by a person
nominated by them under direct supervision.
SPURS
Spurs used by contestants in bucking horse
events must have blunt, free running rowels and
must be at least 3mm thick and 2cm in diameter
so they will not bruise or cut an animal. Spurs for
bulls are semi-locked. Non-regulation spurs will
result in disqualification. For more information,
please contact the APRA on (07) 4661 8183 or
visit prorodeo.asn.au

OUR HISTORY
Famous for its rich mining history, the region was
first home to the Kalkadoon people. Masterful
tool and weapon makers, the Kalkadoon goods
were so prized that items such as stone knives,
boomerangs, woomera spears and shields were
found as far away as South Australia. In 1923, a
lone prospector in search of gold, John Campbell
Miles, discovered silver-lead ore about one
kilometre across the valley of the Leichhardt
River, in north-west Queensland. He named
his prospecting leases Mount Isa. Almost 100
years later, the Mount Isa Mine now owned by
Mount Isa Mines, is still one of Australia’s largest
producers of copper ore.

SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITY
Mount Isa Rotary Rodeo Inc (MIRRI) is a non-profit
organisation whose predecessors had a vision to put the new,
remote town of Mount Isa on the map. The rodeo has its own
mystique and a history dating back to 1959. Back then it took
weeks to walk the bucking horses in from Carrandotta Station
on the Queensland-Northern Territory border to the old rodeo
yards at Kalkadoon Park, Mount Isa. Now the horses and bulls
are brought in by truck to Buchanan Park.
Through the two Rotary Clubs of Mount Isa we stage the
southern hemisphere’s largest rodeo. Yes we do it ‘cause we
love it, but at the heart of it, we do it to better the lives of our
community, our City and our region. The Rodeo helps generate
new economic activity and raises the profile of Mount Isa and
Outback Queensland as “Rodeo Capital of Australia”.
Since its inception, the Isa Rodeo has directly given nearly
$4m to charity in our City, in addition to providing important
fundraising opportunities for clubs, non-profit groups, schools
and community services throughout our City.
By supporting the Isa Rodeo, you’re also supporting our
wider community.
