HEAD’S
WELCOME

I can hardly believe that I have come to the end of my first term
at St. James’. It only seems like yesterday that I was meeting most
of you for the first time and subjecting myself to the Ice Bucket
Challenge - I still shiver at the thought!
It has been a busy and exciting term, during which the pupils
have achieved a tremendous amount, as you will read in this
newsletter. We have celebrated numerous successes in all areas
of school life and the children have made the most of the
increased opportunities we have been able to offer this term. I
am delighted that we now have Golf and Riding academies to go
alongside our sailing at Covenham and, in the New Year, we will
be offering Archery to our Senior Girls. Our musicians have been
busy with the newly introduced musical interludes and the
superbly supported Wassail, in which around 90 pupils of all
abilities performed. The choir have been singing in various parts
of the county throughout the term, particularly in recent weeks,
where performances at the Hospice and for the Mayor, among
others, have been uplifting.
On the academic front, we continue to ensure that every pupil
realises their potential and our newly introduced benchmark
testing will enable us to highlight the exceptional value that we
add in this area.

following audits that I commissioned earlier in the term. In
addition, the newly branded ‘Friends of St James’, with your
support, have raised a significant amount this term through some
superb functions. In light of this I am delighted that they have
agreed to pay in part for a new minibus, which is on order and
will be ready for the start of next term. Although, we will keep
the affectionately known ‘Rusty’ at least until the end of June
(when the MOT is up for renewal), this will only be used sparingly
for pupil transport. This new vehicle will help us with our
burgeoning extra-curricular, sports and music programme and I
am most grateful to the Friends of St. James’ for their support.
Our new website will also go live in the New Year and I hope that
you will find this more navigable and it will prove to be an
important window to the school, for current and prospective
parents and Jacobeans. During the Christmas break there will also
be work done on the Paddock fencing and a refurbishment in the
Sixth Form block ‘Gisby’.
It has been a real pleasure and privilege to get to know your
children and many of you this term and I really value the support
that you have given me.
I am delighted that there is such a positive feel around the school
and I am extremely proud of all that the pupils have achieved.
Thank you for taking the time to complete the parent survey. The

This year started with the topic of Travel and Transport. Children made
fantastic collages about their summer holidays and they thoroughly enjoyed
sharing their adventures with their peers. Each week children learnt about a
different mode of transport from road travel, air, sea and rail.
Johns. Children used card shapes, letters and numbers to prepare a printing
plate. They then used rollers to roll on black ink to their printing plates and
could then use it to print on to their pre prepared paper. The results were
fantastic and the children thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
To end our travel topic the children went to ‘Australia’. Everyone packed a
bag and had their passport ready so that they could go through check-in and
board the plane. Children ate some Australian snacks during the flight such
as Lamington cake and fairy bread and of course a range of delicious fruits.
The flight didn’t take too long and children soon were able to explore
Australia. Areas included Sydney Harbour, where they could listen and watch
some traditional Aboriginal Dream Time stories, the Outback where they
made soft koala bears, the Great Barrier Reef where they made their own
tropical fish, the Rain Forest where they could hunt for a variety of animals
hidden in the foliage and Uluru where they could try some aboriginal style
painting. Everyone had a fantastic time!
Forest School has been very busy and has run throughout this term.
Children have engaged in many activities inspired by the seasons and the
terms topics. Children worked together to make up the Forest School rules of
behaviour and learnt how to use the red bricks to identify potential hazards.
Activities included identifying signs of autumn and creating homes for
hibernating animals and mini beasts. Children created large artwork inspired
by Andy Goldsworthy using found materials such as leaves sticks and stones.
This Autumn the children were able to go on a bus to see Mrs Tiggywinkle at
Normanby Hall. Children were delighted to meet Mrs Tiggywinkle and go
inside her house to see how people in Victorian times washed their clothes.
The children enjoyed seeing the various characters from the Beatrix Potter
books. Finding Peter Rabbits coat in the beautiful garden was very exciting,
as was seeing all the beautiful pumpkins that were being harvested ready for
Halloween!
This half term the children took part in the ‘Everyone’s an Artist’ topic. Each
week focussed on a different artist with very different styles. Children have
learnt about Vincent Van Gogh and were able to sample some French food in
the Parisian café role play area. Reception class painted detailed pictures of
their bedrooms that were inspired by his art work. Next the children learnt
about the artist Arcimbaldo. The children found his portraits fascinating.
They made fruit and vegetable faces and observational drawings of some
unusual vegetables.
Children were inspired by Kandinsky’s use of shapes and colour in his
abstract art work. They made concentric circle pictures and even listened to
music by Wagner, just like Kandinsky did.
The last artist was Mondrian, again children enjoyed his use of lines, shapes
and primary colours. Children used the interactive whiteboard to make their
own Mondrian inspired works of art.
As an exciting end to the topic, Mrs Casey kindly held a workshop for the
children in the senior school art room. She had prepared a large amount of
resources for the children to use to make prints inspired by the artist Jasper

Christmas activities soon took over and all the Foundation stage children
have been busy decorating and making Christmas cards and decorations.
Play rehearsals have kept both children and staff very busy and all the hard
work certainly paid off. This year’s production ‘The Angel Express’ was a
great success and we are all extremely proud of each and every child for
taking part and singing so beautifully. Well done to everyone involved!
The Foundation stage team would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas
and a very Happy New Year. We look forward to seeing you in January!

The Fledglings’ have been very busy this term.
We have been on two trips. One to the Top Town
Market at Freshney place in search of a pumpkin and
another at Central Children’s Centre for a Frozen
experience morning. All of the children were extremely
well behaved. They experienced a public bus and the
school mini bus. We have loved the conversations the
children have had from these experiences.
The vehicle toys are a favourite in the
Fledglings’ class and our travel topic fitted in perfectly
with this. We were all excited about our trip to
Australia. We also had an art topic. The children made
their own versions of famous paintings such as Vincent
Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’, they did this using finger
paints. It was nice to see how much they enjoyed this
topic and learning about paintings. We have been
promoting independence all term and we are proud
with how all of the children are willing to put on their
own slippers and wellington boots. We are looking
forward to the term ahead with lots more exciting
activities planned to inspire learning.

On Monday 6th October, Prep 1 and 2 visited Normanby Hall to experience
their brand new storytelling workshop. It was a memorably wet and windy
day, so we moved from the woodland area into the fascinating
surroundings of the Farming Museum. After exploring the museum and
looking for clues left by the fairies and animals who had moved in to keep
warm and dry, the children worked in small groups to create and tell their
own story. Many thanks to Mrs Anderson and Mrs Hairwadzi for
accompanying us on this visit.
On Tuesday 16th December, all the children from Nursery up to Prep 3
went to the Grimsby Auditorium for this year’s pantomime, ‘Jack and the
Beanstalk.’ It was a brilliant performance, with plenty of cheers for Jack
and boos for the enormous giant and his sidekick, Fleshcreep. Many
thanks to Mrs Anderson, Mrs Wilkins and Mrs Charlesworth for coming
with us. Afterwards, we returned to school for a very enjoyable Prep 1 and
2 Christmas party: thank you to all of our parents for sending in such a
wonderful feast for us all to share.

COMMUNICATION = COMMUNITY
Psychologist Rollo May is quoted as saying that ‘Communication
leads to community’ and, at St. James, this is an axiom which we
most certainly have experienced to be true!
A yoghurt spillage in the dining room last week will have passed
unmarked and unnoticed by a casual observer but it drew my
attention because of the reactions of the Prep children in response to
it. It was as if some unspoken goal had communicated itself to the
children at the epicentre of the yogurt explosion; they leapt into
action and within minutes had formed both a chain-of-command, a
clean-up crew and dealt very ably with the pot, the mess, the
splattered clothing and the slippery floor sign!
It was communication, both spoken and unspoken, that resolved the
situation and meant that seemingly innocuous incident made such an
impression on me. This communicating of a common purpose in
order to achieve a goal happens in most lessons and playtimes and in
every class in the Prep Department. It underpins our relationships
and reinforces the life-long learning for which we aim at St. James’. It
is what creates our team-building approach, our caring ethos and our
incredibly strong sense of belonging to the school family.
Communication is a skill which we have worked really hard to embed
in the school. Because we can communicate with each other
effectively and in so many ways, we have built a happy and
successful community.

SPORT
NEWS

Well, what a fantastic term's work by all of our sporting teams. The ability of
our pupils to perform in such a wide variety of sports to such a high standard
is quite outstanding. Our U.10 boys have qualified for the finals of the local 7a-side Football tournament, which is to take place next year. The Prep indoor
athletics team reached the finals and finished a respectable 7th place out of
all the schools in the North East Lincolnshire area. Our badminton team came
5th out of 16 schools.
Some of our Prep girls represented the U.13 girls table tennis team and were
able to reach the Humberside finals whilst our swimming team competed in
the I.S.A. North finals in Macclesfield.
the U.12 boys team and were the overall winners on the day, which out of 20
competing schools is an incredible achievement. Three of the boys have
made it into the team which will represent the North in the National finals at
the London Olympic Stadium on the 24th January.
These outstanding performances are obviously down to our talented pupils,
but a big thank you must go to the parents who give their time taking their
children to sporting clubs. Also, the staff and parents who give their time in
providing excellent coaching in the clubs which we offer here at St. James'.
Merry Christmas to you all. And I look forward to many more exciting
sporting events during Lent Term. Hopefully the weather will be warmer and
evenings lighter, we can look toward the spring sports beginning.

NEWS
Senior pupils have done the school proud this term and the
addition of around 35 new starters in September have really
helped to foster the positive atmosphere that has been
evident both in and out of the classroom. Participation at all
after school clubs has been excellent and many of our pupils
have also had a taste of competitive Inter-School sport. House
Charity events continue to keep pupils busy at break/
lunchtimes and our Sixth Form continue to set a great example
around the campus.
The School Council continues to meet over a working lunch,
every last Tuesday of the month and consists of 2 elected
pupils from each Form Group. The seniors continue to really
take this seriously and each meeting has led to suggested
improvements that they would like to see in their School
environment. Dr Price and Mr Major have also attended the
meetings this term (for a grilling, in the latters case!), which
has been much appreciated.
Year 7 & 8 News
by Mrs F Lambert, Year 7 & 8 Form tutor
As the summer holiday drew to an end, I started wondering how and indeed if I would fit
in my new position as Year 7 – 8 Form Tutor, having dealt with the older end of the
academic spectrum for so long, namely Year 12 and 13. After this term, and with all respect
to my older pupils whom I do miss dearly, I must say, I have enjoyed the company of my
youngsters. For my transition I have been blessed to inherit the most pleasant group of
children, who are always polite and extremely considerate with each other.
During the first part of this term, Year 7 and 8 held an assembly based on the Charity
“Autism Speaks” and to support their message, they also held a Cake Stall. All proceeds
raised have been donated to Autism Speaks. Year 7 and 8 also put all their effort together
and filled in a Shoe Box which will bring a less fortunate child some happiness on Christmas
day. More charity work will take place in the forthcoming months to encourage each pupil
to look at the wider picture and to remember that all of them together can indeed make a
difference in someone’s life. Year 7 and 8 are also looking forward to a visit to York next
term where an introduction to this beautiful city and its many sights followed by a
‘compulsory shopping session’ (girls requests… sorry boys!) are on the agenda. All pupils
can be very proud of their academic achievements, with many obtaining two
commendations and one pupil gaining as many as FOUR commendations.

Particular thanks this term must go to Alessia Bianchini and
Apoorva Bhattacharya (Year 11), who have given up a high
proportion of their break and lunchtimes in order to run the
Senior School Library. Much appreciated by many pupils!
Thanks also to Sixth Formers Millie Brown, Lyle McNally, Oliver
Hirsch and Emma Brown, who have all been an invaluable help
at most ‘Madhouse’ functions. You are a credit to the school.
Finally, a big thank you to our Senior School Staff, who
frequently give up their free time in order to organise
activities for our students.
I wish all parents, staff and pupils a very Merry Christmas and
a Happy and productive New Year.
Andrea, who is from Spain, spent one term in our school. She seized every
opportunity given to her to make her stay a fantastic one and she must be
most pleased with the progress she made with her mastering of the English
language after such a short time. Andrea truly sets a terrific example to all
her peers and is a great ambassador to her country. On behalf of everyone,
I would like to wish Andrea all the very best for her future.
Very well done to you all, Year 7 and 8, thank you for making my first term
back in the middle school such a pleasant one.

Maths Challenge

A team of Mathematicians enjoyed an enjoyable and competitive afternoon at the
Priory School in Lincoln, when they took part in the Senior Team Maths Challenge,
which is organised by the National Further Maths Network. Sixth Forms from most
Grammar Schools and Colleges from all over Lincolnshire were represented on the
day and the standard is always extremely high. This 3 hour competition consists of 3
rounds, starting with the team working on 10 challenging questions, followed by a
‘Cross-Number’ round with 2 pairs completing Down and Across problems. The final
‘Relay’ round, of 4 lots of 4 questions, sees pairs passing an answer across for their
team-mates to use in another calculation. Our team of Leo Tsang (Year 13), Kevin To
(Year 12), Geon Ha (Year 11) and Harry Yoo (Year 10) really did themselves and the
school proud, by finishing in an impressive 6th place, out of 20 teams. Indeed they
were in the top 3, going in to the last round, before falling on a couple of early relay
questions. A great effort. Well done, boys!
Next term will see Years 8/9 and then Year 10 entering similar challenges!
A group of Senior Students also chose to enter the UK Schools’ Senior Challenge,
which is organised by Leeds University. I am really pleased to say that all of our
entrants successfully gained certificates in this demanding competition. Particular
congratulations must go to Harry Yoo (Year 10). Who finished in the top 1000
students to qualify for the British Mathematics Olympiad. This meant that Harry then
sat a 3 and a half hour paper of extremely difficult challenges, where logical working
and proof is required. We await the result. Fantastic, Harry!

My first term as Head of Sixth Form has been exhilarating; it is inspiring to
have such a diverse set of pupils with us this year and with so many
different abilities and talents. It has been exciting to watch the growing
independence and confidence of the pupils as they start out their Sixth
Form career. Observing this has made it a wonderful start to the year for
me. In the last article, Mrs Lambert discussed how she felt like a mother
with many children, I have found this to be very true as the pupils and I
begin to build our relationships this term.
We started the year with a cake day to celebrate the recent examination
results, both GCSE and A-level pupils performed exceptionally well and we
are proud to have so many pupils studying their A-levels with us this year.
I would like to welcome all of our newly enrolled students, our previous
senior pupils who are now lower sixths and, of course, our outstanding
upper sixths pupils – a very warm welcome to you all. I am sure the
students would agree we have had a wonderful first term together and all
have settled quickly into their individual programmes of study and Sixth
Form life.

It has not all been academic this term; the Sixth Form have attended many
competitive sporting events both in school and through outdoor
education. Well done to all the sixth formers who participated in these
events. I feel special congratulations should be given to Caleb Sekitto on
his admirable effort in Football. Caleb played in the Hull County trials, the
team played brilliantly, but unfortunately the team lost 2-0 to Grimsby
Town Youth team. I find myself always saying to the students “it is the
taking part that counts” and it is very much true, as I am sure Caleb will
always remember this wonderful experience of playing football at this
high standard- very well done Caleb on a fantastic achievement.

Walkerly House

With a successful last year, Walkerly was keen to show the strength and
motivation on and off the pitch again this year. We said a fond farewell to a
few of our Sixth form, but we welcome some new faces to the Walkerly
House. Warm Walkerly welcome to Amy Todd, Year 9, Wesley Wong, Year
10, Linda Liang, Year 10, Andrea Escardino, Year 7 and Vincent Wang, Year
12.
Congratulation to our newly assigned Heads of House; Caleb Sekitto and
Emma Brown, who can motivate and inspire the best of us on and off the
pitch with their own physical prowess. Also a newly appointed position of
Captain for Junior Sports goes to Charlotte Bunten, Year 10.
Our first event was the dodgeball, some powerful players were eager to fly
some balls at one another and it made exciting watching for most of the
house on the side lines. Caleb, Daniel, Kevin and Ian worked effortlessly
together as a team and defeated Blakeney. Lindsey’s nibble toes and hard
hitting just kept us out of the winning zone.
The next event was Inter-House Swimming. As always an exciting event
with much pre-swim banter. Excellent personal efforts from Emma Brown,
Caleb Sekitto, Kevin To, for winning their individual events. A huge big
thank you for the formidable Harvey Harris in Prep 6, whose talents in the
pool astounded all. Walkerly took most of the silverware, Victorix Ludorum
won by Emma Brown, Kevin To winning the Victor Ludorum and Harvey
Harris winning the Championship race by only a few seconds in front of
Caleb Sekitto. A lovely surprise was the most improved which was awarded
to Jeff Lo. He has put in tremendous efforts this time in and out the pool

Blakeney House Supports the Make a Wish Foundation
It has been another hectic term for members of Blakeney House, both on
and off the sports field.
Congratulations to the following Blakeney Commendation Winners (Six

Our Mixed Dodgeball and Senior Netball teams competed really well, and
just managed to snatch second place, whilst our Senior Mixed Hockey side
lost 2-0 to two Caleb breakaways and then somehow managed not to
score in an entertaining draw vs Walkerly. I still don’t know how the ball
did not go in the Walkerly net! No such problems for our Juniors, as the
Girls won both the Netball and their Swimming section and our mixed

but unfortunately we were clinched at the post by Lindsey by 1 point in the
overall house points. Thank you to all that put in all that effort, we’ll get
them next time!
Inter- House football starred our key senior players, notably Caleb, Ian and
Kevin. It was going to be a tough fought match with some notable new
starters in the other houses. Caleb scored a last minute equaliser against
Lindsey and Ian hitting the post in the last minute. A nail biting finish seeing
us just defeated at the post again by Lindsey.
Junior football saw great efforts by Harry Lane, Year 7 and Siddarth Kamath,
Prep 6. Harry has proven himself to be a valuable Walkerly member and
shows skills on the field and leadership off the field.
Finishing a busy term was Inter-House Hockey, our mixed team were
confident of a Walkerly win. Strong defensive play by Linda Liang and Emma
Brown fed Caleb Sekitto a chance to break Lindsey and Blakeney defensive
goal line. Winning both games by 2-0, Walkerly walked away with our first
House win of the term.
The Junior Hockey saw Harry Lane captain his team to a second place
behind Blakeney, with fantastic goals from Siddath Kamath and great
battling from Assisse Hayre.
Walkerly have not only shown the prowess on the field of sport but we
have shown academic success this term. Big congratulations to Assise Hayre
who has been awarded her third Commendation and Metta Soe-Htwe for
two Commendations.
Hockey team showed real team spirit to win against all the odds. Ffion’s
goals, Danni’s stickwork, Sam’s tackling, Geon’s dribbling, Zac’s mobility,
Miriam’s support and Alvaro’s strength at the back made it a real team
effort. Well Done!
On the charity front, the House voted to support Lorna’s suggestion; the
‘Make a Wish Foundation’ and we have been busy raising funds
throughout the term. Well done to Lyle, Sam and Mr Johnson who have
already provided two ‘hot-dog breaks’ and thanks to those who took part
in our great Conker Challenge. With two hours of Carol Singing at
Sainsbury’s to come, then we should have raised a good total, to take into
the New Year. Come on you Bulldogs!!
LINDSEY HOUSE

I am not really sure if it is because I am getting older that time seems to be
marching on so fast or is it just a matter of life? Whichever, I simply cannot
believe this first term is almost coming to an end. And WHAT A TERM THIS
WAS! Our wonderful Lindseyrians seem to go from one victory to another,
beginning with the winning of the Dodgeball House competition, following
on with cries of joy echoing at the Scartho Baths when it was announced
that Lindsey House had won the gala and then furthering their effort by
winning the football and Netball events. I am such a competitive
individual… whenever an event takes place and whatever the event is, I
wake up in the morning and drive to school with a lump in my throat… I
hide away so that no one can come to me to let me know they may not be
able to take part in the event coming ahead (which, I have to say, so rarely
happens) and then, here I am…. As I see my Lindseyrians giving of their
best, I cannot help but shouting, giving them as much moral support but
most importantly, letting them know how much I do care or in the case of
non-sporting activities, any pupil will tell you that, as I am watching one of
our ‘packs’ performing, I will make sure they know I am all the way with
they, supporting them every bit of the way.
I remember a time when the question “Should we support or ban
competitive sports in Schools?” was widely debated. The arguments below
were given in favour of such activities.
• Competitions give students an opportunity to meet and interact with
other students at a different level.
• Competitions teach teamwork and make students ‘good sports.’ These
skills are important in many areas of life, but more especially in the
workplace.
• Competitive sports allow community members to connect with their
school.
• Participation in competitive sports enables students to realise that they
can do what they thought they could not!
I was also very interested to read the opinions of those who disagree with
the above comments and argue that:“Competitive sport is based on the premise that there will be winners and
losers and not every competitor has the fitness, ability or genetic makeup
to be a winner” and that, “Having winners and losers is wrong, as it
enforces a reward system based on the belief that some individuals are
stronger, faster or more gifted than others”.
My personal opinion is that the impact triggered by just having taken part
in an event can actually transform an individual, giving them not just the
confidence but this crucial belief that YES, THEY CAN DO IT! I have
witnessed such transformation numerous times, and each time I compare it
to a small miracle.
And, as I have already mentioned in past Newsletters, whether it be sports
or music or any other event, one area where everyone wins is in being part
of an incredibly strong bond which links all of our Lindseyrians and makes
us the family we are. One of the following characteristic of Lions is that
“Lions are the only big cats to live in groups, called prides. Prides are close
family groups. They work together to defend territory and hunt”. I could
not put in better words the way our house works.
Millie, our Captain, epitomises the essence of what the spirit of our House
is and this year again, she has surpassed herself, not only by being present
at each and every event on the calendar in these last few months but by
also coming up with our Name card. This was a way to raise money for our
chosen Charity ‘The Alzheimer’s Society’ which involved using the name of
each of the Senior and the Preparatory Department pupils in Lindsey. The
winner for this competition will be announced on the last day of this term.
This leads me to say a HUGE THANK YOU to Mrs Brown, Millie’s mum for
her incredible generosity. We had decided that the prize for our name card
would be a Christmas Hamper. As the term was fast drawing towards an
end, I started to worry as very little had been brought in to make this
Hamper. You can imagine how I felt when, two weeks ago, Millie and her
Dad walked into my classroom with the biggest, the most beautiful and
loaded hamper I have ever seen. Thank you so much Mrs Brown, we are all
so grateful for your donation and indeed your support. The success of this
event will not have been possible, however, if Kieran Seymour, Year 7, had
not been so devoted to helping our cause by coming to my room every
morning and going on a ‘selling mission’, ensuring that as many people as
possible would take part in this event. At the end of term Kieran left St.
James’ . I would like to take this opportunity to thank Kieran for his faultless
support to Lindsey, going beyond what is expected of any of our members
and in doing so, setting a fantastic example to all his peers of how much can
be achieved when one is prepared to give their best. We wish Kieran all the
very best for his future.
To end this Newsletter, a very positive note, I would also like to
congratulate all our Lindseyrians who have worked so hard during this
term, and who have accumulated Commendation after Commendation. The
consistent effort these pupils put into their academic work is a testimony to
their dedication and each of them must be truly proud of all their
achievements.

It’s the Walkerly Goal
Have you thought about what you want to be doing in five years'
time? Are you clear about what your main objective at school is at the
moment? Do you know what you want to have achieved by the end of
today?
Walkerly have been asking these very questions and we feel it has
been important for us to see what goal is and make it clear that it can
be achieved. In our assembly we gave examples of our goals;
Mrs Casey’s Goal
As part of the taking the challenge campaign for Walkerly. I have
decided to set myself a large goal. I have entered into a 10km Mud
challenge. ‘Born to Survive’ is being held in the Lake District on the 4th
April 2015.
The website quotes, “Born Survivor's not your average trail run or
obstacle event. It's designed to be tough and testing and it may just
break you. You'll need to be physically fit and mentally prepared to
cope with the challenges and endure the suffering. Expect mud, expect
hills, expect water, but don't expect gimmicks; this course is the sort of
challenge the British Army face in their training every day.”
This grueling 10km run has over 30+ obstacles and very unforgiving
terrain.
George Hart wants to achieve 2 or more commendation this year.
Caleb Sekitto wants to work hard and get his two A’s to get to
Loughborough University.
Wesley Wong wants to enjoy his time in England and improve his
English

St. James’ staff take on the Masterchef
Challenge
Staff at St. James’ wowed the panel of judges with their culinary expertise this term,
producing excellent three course dinners.
‘Surf and Turf’ extravagance was followed by Chilli chocolate pancakes for Mr
Yarbrough and Mr and Mrs Jennings, all beautifully presented in a rustic style with
handmade labels for the whole dining experience. A rather cool and calm Headmaster
team impressed the judges with a tasty curried sweet potato soup made by Dr Price
was followed by a healthy main of chilli orange Salmon on a bed of rice. Mr Casey and
Mr Pfeifer nicknamed the ‘Winging team’ impressed the panel with a spicy prawn
starter and a fantastic Tuna Spiedini main meal. A modern take on the Apple strudel
was constructed by Mr Pfeifer. The last team was a beautiful arrangement of Spanish
tapas and flavours. The panels were wowed by the Mrs Tong’s Spanish omelette and
Paella.
Under a strict marking system, the panel of Judges were Mrs Casey, Mrs Yarbrough
and Mr and Mrs Dalby. All experienced food critic and Artistic merits were award
were given for creativity and presentation.

I have to say, I am looking forward to it but I have to train 3 times a
week to haul myself around. This is my goal and I have chosen to do it,
I will however be using this as a chance to raise some money for the
Walkerly charity.
We are raising money for the Sheffield Children’s Hospital. This charity
is important to one member of the Walkerly house. Daniel Maasdam
was admitted into the hospital last year and the nurses and Doctors at
the hospital saved his live. We feel it is only right to give something
back to the place and Walkerly would like to help.

The winning dishes were Dr Price’s delicious Curried Soup as the best starter, Mr

Swimming Gala
The Senior School Swimming Gala was an extremely close affair,
with Lindsey House snatching the title from defending champions,
Walkerly, in the very last relay race, by a single point!

Table Tennis
The Senior Club has been very well attended this term,
by students and staff alike and we now have promotion
and relegation on the weekly ladder, which is now split
into two divisions. Congratulations to Leo Tsang (Year
13) who just (only just!!) managed to fend off the
challenge of Mr Hampson, to claim the prestigious
‘Christmas Number 1’ spot, with Khetho Jankowski
(Year 10) edging out ‘Messi’ Yee for 3rd.
Congratulations also to our Under 13 Girls’ Table Tennis
Squad. Firstly, our team of Tilly Mossop (Prep 6), Asisse
Hayre (Year 7), Danni Smith (Year 7) and Mille Jennings
(Prep 6) won the Grimsby and District Team
Championships, thus qualifying to represent Grimsby in
the Humber Games, over in Hull. Tilly and Danni were
then joined by Grace Middleton (Year 7) and Ffion Price
(Year 7), where our Girls finally finished a commendable
3rd out of 8 teams.
Netball
The U. 12 team have had a busy and successful term. This year, for the first
time, we were able to enter the Year 7 Grimsby Indoor Netball Tournament.
The team performed brilliantly, coming second in their group without losing a
game. Unfortunately, we were knocked out by Healing School in the semifinal. A great result for St. James, particularly as this is the first time we have
played as a team.
For the next match the team travelled to Manchester to play Hulme Hall
School. St. James’ were strong in both attack and defence and won the match
convincingly 8-2. After the match we watched Manchester City beat Bayern
Munich and also had photographs taken with a few celebrities! Overall, a
great day out!

Basketball
Our Boys’ U. 14 squad of Ben (Capt), Peer, Khetho, Roy, Alvaro, Rueben,
Harry L, Geon Y, Geon H, Shayan and Jeff played seven matches over three
weeks to finish in fourth place out of eight teams in the District
Tournament, that was held at Grimsby Institute. Well done boys and
thanks for Mr Lewis and Dr Theaker for being team managers.
The U. 16 Girls’ team of Christie, Alessia, Lucy, Jane, Danni and Andrea
competed very well against strong Toll Bar and Healing Schools, finishing
third overall. Mrs Lambert was very proud of the team on the night.
Christie has led the team extremely well and had organised several
lunchtime meetings to discuss tactics. Thanks to Christie…and Mrs Lambert
too for having to walk with the team to the Grimsby Institute on a freezing
cold night!
Football
The weekly Senior Football Club has been really well
attended and has made for an enjoyable term. We are now
using one of the Bradley 3G pitches each week and as a
result the boys are all improving their skills.
Our U. 14 team played out a goalless draw and then won 10, through an Alvaro long shot, in two competitive games
against the Holy Family Catholic Academy, whilst Harry
Lane’s goal gave us the lead, which we held for 10 minutes,
before losing 9 – 1 at Hulme Hall Grammar School. Team:
Khetho, Alvaro, Geon Y, Roy, Rueben, Harry L and Kieran.
Roy Hillson and Caleb Sekitto both attended district trials,
with Caleb playing for a Humberside X1 against the Grimsby
Town Youth team. Well done!
Our Senior team won 5 -2 and then lost 3 -1 in two games
against Hulme Hall, whilst most of the team also played in
the Richard Patterson Memorial Match, where they were
joined by some staff, parents and Old Boys to play a team
organised by Richard’s friends. A minutes silence was well
observed before an entertaining game saw the Jacobeans
team narrowly lose 5-4.

Tennis Club
Currently having its winter break, Senior School Tennis Club will
return after the February Half-Term and will run until the Summer
Holidays. We have around 15 regulars attending the club, which is
led by Head Coach, Mark Henry. It has been lovely to see many of
our new pupils taking and the standard of their play has been
improving through the term. Congratulations to Asisse Hayre (Year
7), who has now started to play in competitive Club Tournaments,
where she has achieved some great results.
SENIOR
TRIPS
SENIOR PUPILS VISIT THE ETIHAD STADIUM
All of our Footballers and Netball players had the
opportunity to go and watch Champions League Football at
the Etihad Stadium. The Seniors attended City 1 Roma 1,
whilst the Juniors were treated to City’s memorable 3-2
victory against Bayern Munich, where we met ex Man Utd
and England player, Phil Neville, German World Cup winner
Paul Brietner and City Legends Ian Brightwell and Richard
Edgehill. Thank you to Mrs Hagerup for attending.
VISIT TO DONNA NOOK
Our Year 7 & 8 pupils had the opportunity to visit
Donna Nook earlier in the term to see the seals
who have come in to shore during birthing season.
Some of the seals had just given birth to their new
pups and it was a fantastic opportunity for pupils to
see how the seals look after their young.

Horse Riding at Weelsby Riding School

Since half-term ten pupils from the Prep and Senior Departments
of St. James’ School have been enjoying horse riding at Weelsby
Riding Centre in Grimsby. The pupils have enjoyed an hour and a
half after school on a Monday evening, sessions comprising of a
group lesson for three quarters of an hour combined with stable
management for the remainder of the time. They have been
mastering the basics of walking, trotting and cantering in the
indoor arena as well as learning how to tack up, un-tack, groom
and care for the horses. The pupils range from complete novices to

more experienced riders and Weelsby caters for them all with
experienced staff and differentiation within the lessons. Our pupils
have ridden some beautiful horses, ranging from black , brown,
white and spotted with names such as Saffy, Crystal, Indie and
Harvey. They have also enjoyed some challenges such as ‘Around
the World’ where you have to turn in a complete circle on the
saddle of your horse and ‘The Scissors’.

We have a fantastic group of boarders this year and the house is
constantly buzzing with chatter and laughter. The past three months
have flown by with the boys having an action packed first term of the
year. Petchell House is pleased to welcome no less than eight new
boarders to the house this term. Pupils from Germany, Spain, Korea,
Hong Kong, China and Nigeria have joined the house, making it a truly
diverse place to live. The boarding life continues to be as busy as ever
with the new boys embracing the activities that the school has to offer.
This year we have continued with the popular boarding visits with
the boarders visiting Nottingham Castle, York Railway Museum,
Cadbury World and Lincoln Christmas Markets to name just a few.
The boarders thoroughly enjoy the visits and embrace the
opportunity to see new sights and places around England. The
boarders also enjoy local visits including activities such as Bowling,
Ice Skating, Cinema visits and meals out.
The pupils are widely involved with the sport and music at the
school. The boys have represented numerous teams and different
sports around the county and the North of England and also
representing local sport teams. I always encourage the pupils to get
involved with local teams as it gives them a greater sense of
community in the Town. Leo and Kelvin are heavily involved in the
local table tennis teams and Caleb is training hard with Cleethorpes
Athletic Club. The range of activities on offer at the school has
greatly increased with sports such as Sailing, Horse Riding and
Croquet being offered to all students on a weekly basis.
This year has seen the development of a boarding committee made
up of pupils who are helping to steer the boarding experience and to
ensure that their views are heard. The meetings cover topics such as
visits, food, accommodation and communal areas. This input from
the senior pupils helps them to develop their leadership skills and

prefect roles.
I am delighted to welcome Mr Pfeifer to the boarding team as a
Resident GAP Assistant. He has worked tirelessly this first term helping
around the house, the music department and at prep times. He has
built very good working relationships with the boys and is often a
friendly ear when they want a chat.

The boarding students have thoroughly enjoyed attending the ‘Sailing
Club’ which Mr Casey has set up. The morale has been wonderful! The
other popular club has been the Golf Academy. I know there are many
more clubs, in fact too many to list! We would like to thank the various
staff members for their time and the opportunities they provide. Particular
mention must go to Mrs Kendrick, who has very kindly taken two girls to
horse-riding, on a weekly basis and Mrs Hoyle who has also taken the girls.
One of our most memorable evenings this term has been when we took
the children to a Oriental Express in Cleethorpes. The children love the
opportunity to choose from the wide range of international cuisine and of
course put to good use the skills they have gained from their ‘Etiquette’
lessons. For the younger children this included things like sitting nicely at
the table and using their knife and fork correctly and for the older ones it
meant having to keep their mobiles in their pockets…ha ha! The challenge
of the evening!
Ms. Morey retired at the end of Michaelmas term. There have many
memorable moments throughout her time here, one of which was the
charity parascending event in 2013 which she took part in. It took place on
Monte Baldo around 2,000 meters high. Monte Baldo is above Malcesine
on Lake Garda. It was to raise money for ‘Guide Dogs for the Blind’. Ms.
Morey has previously taken part in similar events. We would all like to
wish you a very happy retirement and best wishes for your move to Italy!

NEWS
By Miss B Fisher, Chair of Friends of St. James’
This term has seen a fresh start and a big change for the former PTA
committee. It was decided that it was time to re-brand and change the
name of the group to ‘Friends of St. James’’ which now allows us to invite
past pupils, former staff members or Governors or indeed anyone with an
association with the school to join. At the beginning of the term it was
great to see new faces coming along and joining the committee, bringing
with them some fantastic new ideas.
Events this year have included the annual golf day, the Halloween party,
the Christmas Fair and the Wassail, in addition to providing refreshments
at various school events. The support from parents has been staggering!
Lucie and I have not had an office for over a month due to the extreme
generosity of gifts for the tombola, cakes and raffle prizes. So thank you
all for your kindness. I am delighted to say that we have had a record
term raising in excess of £3000, allowing us to assist the School once
more in the purchase of another school mini bus.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank every one of the members
for their support and help; this was very much a team effort.

St. James’ School supports a vast number of charities and over
the last term, thanks to parent, staff and pupil support we have
been able to present a number of charities with their donations.

prize (A real Christmas Tree from the Brocklesby Estate) to the
YMCA to allow the young people to ‘trim up’ for the festive
period.

Team
It's been a fabulous term for the Artiez team at St.
James’ School. What a lot of fun we've had! All
children have been working very hard in all our
sessions , in particular our Melody Bear group
where we have been focusing on topics such as
travel, the alphabet and not forgetting Melody &
Milligan Bear’s all important Christmas concert.
Congratulations to all the children from our
Ballet, Tap & Melody Bear classes who took part
in the concert. We thought you were all fabulous
and couldn't be more proud of each and everyone
of you.
Here at Artiez, we are also delighted to announce
that all children who took part in their very first
ballet & tap examinations have PASSED with
flying colours! The feedback from the examiner
was outstanding and we are delighted with these
results. We are planning to host an awards
ceremony in the new year and hope that you will
join us in celebrating your wonderful
achievement.
There is lots to look forward to next term. As well
as continuing with Ballet, Tap & Melody Bear
Classes, we are also delighted to be offering
Gymnastics sessions on a Wednesday evening,
this is open to all children from Prep 3upwards.
Gymnastics not only teaches strength, flexibility,
agility, confidence & balance, but it also gives all
children the opportunity to learn about
teamwork, sportsmanship, fair play and
dedication.
We hope that you will join us at our exciting
clubs. Please see your class teachers for letters.
