‘Area has 6 water supply schemes, lush green forests’

Pulwama, Sep 1: Noted economist and senior Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leader, Dr
Haseeb Drabu, has expressed
dismay over the State Government’s proposed move to relocate Army’s firing range from
Tosamaidan to Sangarwani in
district Pulwama.
Interacting with the worried residents of the area
who called on him in Rajpora
today, Dr Drabu said that it
is absolutely illogical on part
of the State Government to
propose Sangarwani area
bordering the tourist resort
of Yusmarg as a firing range.
He said the area is not only
vastly inhabited but also
holds massive public infrastructure in tourism, drinking water and forest sectors.
“The area is a source of
drinking water supply for
not only Pulwama, Shopian
and Budgam but also caters
to major part of Srinagar city
as six drinking water supply
schemes including the Doodhganga scheme are located in
the area,” he said and added
that any move to change the
area into a firing range would
involve not only relocation of
inhabitants but the government infrastructure as well
including destruction of the
tourist resort of Yusmarg.
He said the area is also
flush with lush green forests
and any move to change it
into a firing range would turn
out to be a colossal ecological disaster which could have
far reaching consequences for
the ecologically fragile area.
Urging the State Government to rethink over its decision of shifting the firing range
to Sangarwani, Dr Drabu
said the present government
instead of mitigating the problems of the people seems to be
hell bent upon compounding
the same by its irrational decisions and actions.

Srinagar, Sep 1: The authorities of SP College here handed over two touts to police who
surfaced in the institution during counseling for Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship
Scheme on Monday.
“We handed over two touts to police,”
Principal SP College told Greater Kashmir,
adding that one was from New Delhi. He said
that around 400 students were counseled for
admission in different engineering colleges of
the country. “They were given admission and
scholarship letters,” he added.
However, Kashmiri students who are
being enrolled under Prime Minister’s Special Scholarship Scheme Monday alleged that
counseling team of All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) is forcing them to
get enrolled in their own preferred colleges
of Haryana and Punjab.

hit back at Chief Minister
Omar Abdullah for questioning Centre’s decision to
call off talks with Pakistan.
The BJP’s Kashmir
spokesman Khalid Jehangir in a statement here
said, “Omar is playing to
the galleries ahead of the
assembly elections. He
knows his report card on
the performance front is
zero. He is indulging in
rhetoric to gain sympathy.”
Jehangir said that
Omar should focus on
local issues rather than
‘poking his nose’ in the
foreign policy of the
country. “Omar is raising
non-issues to divert the
attention of people from
his dismal performance as
Chief Minister,” he said.
Jehangir said that Omar
is trying to appease separatists ahead of polls to
get political mileage. “The
new government led by
Narendra Modi took a bold
decision by calling off the
talks with Pakistan and
everyone has appreciated
it,” he said.
Taking a dig at Omar
for describing BJP’s
slogan of 44 plus as a Bollywood glitz, Jehangir
said, “BJP is emerging as
a strong alternative for
the people in Jammu and
Kashmir. Party’s growing
popularity and increasing influence in Kashmir
has unnerved Omar. He
knows that days of the
government led by him
are numbered that’s why
he is talking about Bollywood glitz.”
Jehangir said, “People
are fed up of family raaj
and they will give a befitting reply to Abdullahs in
coming elections. Claims of
Omar will stand punctured
within a few months as NC
will lose it address in JK.”
“Omar has sensed
defeat and his utterances
are ample proof of it,” he
added.

people of the state deserve a
change in the present political system to get rid of the
administrative injustice and
the mis-governance by traditional political parties.
Expressing dismay over the
‘pathetic’ condition of Srinagar
city on the developmental
front, Sajad said it was apparent that the successive regimes
led by the traditional parties
have always ignored the city.
The PC chief alleged that
people of Srinagar have been
suppressed politically by
National Conference and
Peoples Democratic Party governments and they have been
deprived of basic amenities and
employment opportunities.
He impressed on the people
to join hands with Peoples
Conference in its campaign
for change. Sajad asked party
workers to work with highest dedication to make Peoples Conference victorious
so that the dream of change
could provide hope and help
to the suppressed people of
the state.

under PMSSS at SP College Srinagar for past
three days, had invited 9000 students for
the available 5000 seats. The students who
received counseling from the AICTE team
headed by Director RS Rathore alleged that
they have not been given any choice with
regard to the selection of colleges.
“AICTE is thrusting their decision upon us
and we are being forced to take admissions in
private colleges of Haryana and Punjab only.
There are other options for us as most of the students had opted for colleges in other states but
we fail to understand why the counseling team
is compelling us to take admissions only in colleges of Haryana and Punjab,” the students said,
AICTE is the nodal agency for implementing PMSSS in Jammu and Kashmir and
according to its norms the students ought to be
given a choice about the selection of colleges.
Some parents alleged that by forcing their
wards to take admissions in particular colleges will fetch huge monetary benefits to the
counseling team in the form of commission.

Some seats in various undergraduate degree
programmes, other than B.V.Sc & AH, under
different categories have fallen vacant. Accordingly,
upgradation/change of subject counseling shall be
held shortly. The students on rolls who stand admitted
and are desirous for upgradation/change of stream
shall register their names in the Academic Section
of Registrar's Office on 04.09.2014 between 10 am
to 4 pm giving 02-03 choices in order of preference.
The candidates who were invited for 2nd round of
counseling under different categories and attended
but could not get admission in the desired subject
of choice due to non-availability of seats at that time
can also register their names subject to production
of documentary evidence of being present in the 2nd
round of counseling. It may be mentioned here that
the candidates who did not attend 1st or 2nd round of
counseling for any reason, whatsoever, are not eligible
for registration of names/attending counseling. The
upgradation/change in subject counseling shall be
purely on the basis of merit/ rank obtained in UET2014. The candidates may visit University website
