The Wallace Centers of Iowa ventured
into several new projects in 2015.
These opportunities were approached
based upon predicted areas of growth
and after listening to supporters and
program participants.
This annual report briefly describes
project outcomes, recognizes
volunteers and donors, and
outlines the financial health of
the organization. Questions and
comments are always welcome.
For the first time, the WCI held a
2-day Harvest Celebration in October
that attracted over 400 visitors.
The demonstrations, garden tours,
plethora of beautifully displayed
produce, live music, games and
perfect fall weather made the event
a great culmination of another
successful year. Many thanks to our
wonderful staff and the public for
your support and interest.

SUMMER FRIDAYS AT THE FARM
HEARTS & HOMES HISTORIC TEAS
FOOD FOR THOUGHT
During Summer Fridays at the Farm, a
new rotating menu of weekly specials
and comfort favorites brought a 51%
increase of local patronage to the
Gathering Table at the Country Life
Center.
Groups attending one of the Hearts &
Homes Historic Teas during the year
included a bridal shower, Questers,
and a book club. Des Moines Senior
College contracted for two programs
just for its members.
Thursday night Food for Thought
Dinners at the Wallace House attracted
more than 750 diners in 2015, thanks
in part to feature stories in dsm
magazine, the Des Moines Register,
and Cityview magazine. this number is
a 7% increase from 2014.
“Having an organization like
The Wallace Centers of Iowa
to bring these conversations
to the table is important and
challenges our community to
think about the food we are
eating.”

COMMUNITY SUPPORTED AGRICULTURE (CSA)
FARM APPRENTICES
DIRECT PRODUCE SALES
The garden continues to flourish
under Mosa Shayan’s sustainable and
thoughtful care. WCI’s Community
Supported Agriculture program joined
140 subscribers in sharing the risk
and bounty of the growing season by
purchasing a farm share. Farm staff
added a 4-week Winter Share to the
Spring, Summer and Fall options,
extending the CSA program to 31
weeks of the year. In addition, a special
Thanksgiving produce box was offered
to customers. This year, subscribers
selected and bagged their weekly
produce instead of getting a prepacked box. 2015 subscriptions met
or exceeded initial projections. 90% of
survey respondents rated the CSA as
“awesome” or “better than most”.
Two Farm Apprentices seeking
practical experience in fruit and
vegetable production spent weeks
with WCI, learning organic farming
practices and the specifics of produce
production such as preparing plant
beds, weed and insect management,
cover crops and farmers market sales.
WCI continues to work with local
food distribution company FarmTable
Delivery to expand produce sales to
area restaurants, grocery stores, and
institutions. FarmTable Delivery works
specifically with small and mid-sized
producers who have a commitment
to high quality standards including
certified organic, practicing organic and
chemical-free.

REAL FOOD CAMP
“I would
recommend the
camp to kids
with an interest
in healthy living,
agriculture and
pizza!”—Eleanor
Real Food Camp hosted three teens
in 2015 for a learning experience
focused on all aspects of food.
Campers took part in team building
activies, hands-on learning, meal
preparation, physical activity, and
discussion. A service project at a
local food pantry helped develop
leadership and community service
skills.
One student reported, “We walked
through a wildlife and watershed
area and learned about water. A hunt
through the grocery store taught us
about local foods. We looked at a map
to see where food is shipped from. We
hauled onions at the food pantry.”

CULINARY CLASSES
DIALOGUE DINNERS
CIVILITY & LEADERSHIP LUNCHES
The number of Culinary Classes
increased 50% to accommodate
requests from private groups such as
Des Moines’ Senior College, business
interns and others wanting a chance
to learn cooking techniques from Chef
Katie Porter.
The topic of water evolved into a
Dialogue Dinner series with in-depth
conversations about the future of
Iowa’s water. More than 100 people
from all walks of life attended one of
the discussions. These were held at the
Wallace House, the Country Life Center
and White Rock Conservancy in Coon
Rapids, Iowa.
A new Leadership and Civility lunch
series at the Wallace House offered
insight on effective leadership and
how civility practices can lead to more
sustainable outcomes. Many sessions
were full, with 115 people attending
one or more lunches. Program
speakers included Tabby Hinderaker
of Purposeful Growth, Kevin Pokorny
of Pokorny Consulting, Aubrey Alvarez
of Eat Greater Des Moines; Bill Stowe
from Des Moines Water Works; Donna
Red Wing, One Iowa and Bob Vander
Plaats, The Family Leader; and Callista
Gould, Culture & Manners Institute.

Machine Shed cONSTRUCTION
Machine Shed & Capital Project Donors
Finally! The machine shed at the
Country Life Center stands complete at
the north end of the garden. All of the
farm equipment can now be secured
overnight and stored when not in use.
And just as important for the long-term
care of WCI’s machinery, staff now
have a place for regular maintenance
and needed repairs. Quality
Structures, Inc., with several locations
in southwest Iowa, constructed the
building.
“The shed was a necessary
addition to the farm as we
continue to expand.”

VOLUNTEERS
WCI is fortunate to have a legion of
volunteers who are ready, willing,
and able to help. Many volunteers
assist in day-to-day operations, such
as weeding in the garden or preparing
the newsletter. Other volunteers
help with a special event such as the
Harvest Celebration or the Sherman
Hill tour of homes. We couldn’t do
without them!
