In the 21st Century we live in an
environment
wired
with
technological advancement. It is
difficult to imagine that, in this
technological age of the borderless
world
of
cyberspace,
an
organisation doing any sort of
business could survive without a
website. It was primarily to keep
abreast with the times that in 2004
KGS launched its website and in
2006 it went online.
There is no denying the fact that a website must be constantly
updated to serve its purpose and to be useful to the organisation
at all times. But the last time the club website was updated was
in August 2007. Given this fact, it seems that the idea of regular
maintenance and update has not sunk in with the staff in charge
of the club’s department of information technology (ICT). That is,
indeed, sad.
But here is a piece of good news for all club members and readers
of The Golfer. The club will be launching its new and improved
website in September 2008. With better quality staff and adequate
supervision, the new KGS website promises to be properly run
and will always be up-to-date.
We are aware that with an effective website programming KGS
will gain more business from its potential customers, the website
visitors. We know that each and every individual person from a
child to a senior citizen prefers the internet to look out for their
desired products, whether it is about fees for a round of golf or a
golf lesson with the KGS pro. The number of search engines is
increasing day by day. Mark my words, if KGS is not on these
search engines we tend to lose out to our competitors, for
membership and other relevant products.
Bearing the above factors in mind, it is felt that the current website
is not adequate to serve the needs of the ever expanding KGS
club activities. The million dollar question on everyone’s mind is
this: Is KGS smart enough to spend some money on building a
practical, yet attractive enough website to enhance members’ use
of it. To have a good website is like having a comprehensive Yellow
Page tailored entirely to KGS needs. And remember that the club’s
online website is like a 24-hour sales person exposing your
products around the globe. What can be better than that businesswise?
Having said all that, one has to make sure KGS website is designed
with excellence in mind. The previous website was, in many
respects, far too short of our expectations. What constitutes a
good website design? Rest assured that a lot of people will be
looking at our website. They will expect it to be neat and clean,
and that it is easy to navigate. Even though the website is simple,
easy navigation coupled with the fact that it is neat and clean, our
website will be popular. Popularity is very important. Therefore,
our focus will be providing information as clearly spelt out as
possible to avoid ambiguity and confusion, and in a manner that
flows and allows easy navigation by our visitors. That, in a nutshell,
is a good design.
After the September 2008 launch, our mission and objective must
be that we will be able to run our website on our own, whoever
the website designers may be. It is of paramount importance that
we talk to the designers and get them to show us how to service
and update the website on our own. Otherwise the club will face
the same old problems of being dependent on the designers, as
with the KGS old website, the more reason we should insist on a
very simple design. Only if we could update it on our own could
we make sure that, unlike our past sloppy experience, the KGS
website will always be up-to-date across time.
As members all know, we are going full steam with the website
revamp and updating project, to provide innovative and better
service and usage to members, netizens and visitors. The new
features will consist of interactive communication. Under this
heading will be the following: (1) surveys and feedbacks; (2)
recruitment (job applications); (3) memo distribution, and (4) archive
events.
One general heading will cover several topics of interest to all
members: club history; management information; golfing calendar;
quick reference guides; membership forms; club newsletter (The
Golfer); photo gallery; upcoming events; club updates; info notices;
press release, and online payment. All these will be presented in
a clear and precise format, avoiding the pitfalls of our past
experiences. We want our website to be regularly surfed by visitors
worldwide, and that it is popular. In the era of globalisation no one
can disregard the power and strength of website popularity.
The launching date is eagerly anticipated. Even before its launch
in September 2008, members can audaciously hope that the new
website will bring good things to our club because it is our excellent
24-hour marketing tool. Having an online presence in the form of
a club website is one of the best investments we have had.
Furthermore, having a well-designed website will ensure that we
are able to compete in the online world. A distinguished and popular
website will help KGS establish its name as a thriving and
progressive premier club.

Vice-President’s Message
Vice-President’s
Message
Let me wish all Muslim members and staff Selamat Berpuasa and Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri and best wishes
to all others.
This Holy Month of Ramadan is a perfect time for reflection, on the past, the present and the future especially
when it coincided with the month of our 45th independence. Reflection on what we have done, what we are
doing and what we will be doing for ourselves and for others. Indeed we must not only ask what we have done.
More importantly, we should ask: “Is there anything else we could do to upgrade the standard of cleanliness in
our environment, the attitude of our employees towards work and the standard of service offered to members
to earn a word of praise and a satisfactory acknowledgement from them?”
We have improved our golf courses, but what about our badminton hall with its falling doors and broken gutters,
etc? It is too easy to pride ourselves on what we have done until we ask and answer the question, “Have we
done enough?”
Too many organisations, including charitable ones, have delighted themselves with the fact that they have
plenty of resources, even money and fixed deposits, while there are things that need doing and needy people
that need helping! Only when we reflect on our actions and deeds can we fully understand the actual situation
at hand. A thorough knowledge and an understanding of the current situation can lead us to chart out the path
to the future, to do the right things and do them right successfully.
May Peace Be with all of you.

Vice President

Captain’s Message
Captain’s
Dear fellow members,
Our golfing activities are
taking a short break during
the month of Ramadan
before we shift gear again
in October with a number
of golf tournaments
planned for the 4th quarter
of the year. The short
hiatus gives our course maintenance team the opportunity to
carry out some important maintenance and improvement
works on the course.
The Management Committee at its last meeting approved a
5 -year Master Plan for the “maintenance and upgrading” of
our Siol-Demak and Matang-Santubong courses, the details
of which will be shared with the general membership in due
course.
The key areas of focus are as follows:
• A macro drainage scheme to move excess water from
the Siol-Demak ponds into the nearby rivers. This will
involve the upgrading of existing drains and construction
of new ones to facilitate better drainage.
•
Returfing of all the fairways at Siol-Demak, (a number of
which has been completed).
•
Rebuilding of all the old greens at Siol-Demak.
•
Upgrading and reconstruction of bunkers.
•
A phased replacement programme for many of our
machineries, some of which are more than 20 years old.
For obvious financial reasons, we’ll endeavour to carry out
most of the work in-house, out-sourcing only the major
construction work, to ensure cost-effectiveness.
Hollow-tinning of all the greens have just been completed,
giving the turf time to “rejuvenate” such that we’ll have
optimum playing condition come October. We plan to carry
out this “hollow-tinning” exercise twice a year, the first in
January/February, before the “golfing season” starts and the
Message
second during Ramadan, when there is reduced traffic on the
courses.
To help us assess the performance of our caddies, to better
serve our golfers, we’ve recently introduced the Caddie
Assessment System, which has been used in many major
overseas clubs. It’s a very simple system, requiring minimum
effort on the part of the golfer. At the end of each game, the
caddie will give a laminated card with his name and personal
number to the golfer who will then place the card into one of
the four slots in the “Caddie Assessment” box located near
the Golfer’s Terrace and Buggy Centre indicating Excellent,
Good, Average and Poor. Points for consideration in assessing
his performance should include the caddie’s attitude,
helpfulness (for example their ability to indicate line on greens),
diligence in repairing divots, rake bunkers and repair ball marks
etc.
We need these feedbacks from golfers so that we can reward
and motivate the good caddies and train the not-so-good ones,
so that over time we can raise the overall service level of our
caddies. We already have in place a Caddie - incentive
programme, your co-operation will go a long way in helping
us ensure success of the programme.
For a number of years, most of our members have been
supporting the “one ringgit-a-month” project to raise fund for
the various charitable organisations in Sarawak, especially
those in Kuching. We’ll continue to do this to support the less
fortunate amongst us. During the
month of October/November we’ll
be organising 2 separate Charity
Golf for the same purpose and I
appeal to all our golfers to support
the club by participating in these
events.
Thank You and Happy Golfing!!

RE: SUPER SENIOR CATEGORY
In many country clubs throughout Malaysia, the Super Senior Category is permanently established in the
constitution of many golf clubs. In fact, it is incorporated as the club’s golf rules.
To qualify for this category, a club member must have attained his 70th birthday. Among the special privileges
accorded to such members are:1. They are exempted from paying monthly subscription fees.
2. They tee from the white teeing ground (tee-box) when playing a game of golf. If the individual golfer
decides to ignore this privilege, he has the option to do so.
As far as we know, KGS does not accord such a privilege to those members who are 70 and above. I would like
to recommend such a privilege as described above be included in the club constitution to be introduced during
the coming AGM. May I suggest that the Deputy President bring this matter to the forthcoming club AGM for
appropriate debate and if approved, to be passed as an amendment to our club constitution.

Floranid NK (14:0:19:3)
is suitable for application after the renovation process (hollowtyning, verticutting, dethatching, etc.) The
high potash toughens the turf and increase disease resistance while the magnesium increases leaf
strength and improves plant activity. The colour of the turf is also enhanced because of the high potash.
When Floranid NK is used together with Agrosil LR during renovation, the rate of recovery is exceptionally
fast. Floranid NK is a suitable top-dress fertilizer for the greens, tee-boxes and fairways.

Agrosil LR
is a soil improver. When Agrosil LR is used together with Floranid NK as a basal fertilizer the rate of
establishment of the turf is improved. The turf also develop a better root system both in depth and density.
Agrosil LR is also recommended for use during renovation after hollowtyning. When Agrosil LR is used
after hollowtyning. The rate of recovery of the turf is greatly enhanced and the period of disruption to play
is shortened.
Floranid Master (16:5:10:5+TE)
maintains the availability of phosphate to meet the turf’s requirement. The potash maintains balance with
nitrogen for growth while the high magnesium maintains colour and strength of the turf. The use of
Floranid Master and Floranid Turf alternating with Floranid NK on the green provides a good balance of
the phosphate level with nitrogren and potassium conducive for good turf development.

Floranid Permanent (15:9:15:2+TE)

fairways provides a good balance of the phosphate level with nitrogen and potassium conducive for good
turf development.

KGS Gawai Dayak Open House Golf
In conjunction with the Gawai Dayak celebration, the club successfully organised the KGS Gawai Dayak Open
House Golf 2008. Similar to the Chap Goh Mei Open House concept, the club managed to organise an open
house with the objective to strengthen ties and relationship among members and their families. There were also
food stalls being set up selling local traditional foods such as ‘ayam pansuh’, tuak, lemang and many more.
For golf, about 130 participants took part in the event which was divided into 4 categories. The golf game was
played on shotgun basis and tee-off time was at 7.45 a.m.
During the prize presentation
lunch, the participants were
entertained with traditional
Iban dances. In his speech,
Dato Sri William Mawan was
delighted to be involved in such
an event and wished to see
many more events in future
where all races can mix
together in harmony.
Club Happenings
Mussen Lamoh emerged as winner for the men category as well as the
Dayak category with a nett score of 67. In the true gawai spirit, Mussen
had to drink two big bowls of tuak ..... before he could claim his prize. Like
a true champion, he guttered down his throat the powerful tuak in a matter
of seconds. Goh Chee Chen took second place in the men nett with a 68
winning on count back over George Tang. Meanwhile Oh Sea Joon carded
a gross 76 taking first spot in the gross section leaving Martin Wong and
Fabian Marip in second and third placing respectively.
In the ladies category, Martina Sim could not get the exemption and had to
finish one bowl of tuak before she could claim the winner’s trophy in the
ladies category with her 68 nett. Amanda Chin conquered the gross section
with an impressive 75.
All winners in the invited guest category including Alexander Dris, Polit
Hamzah, Dr. Roland Mattu, Dickson Saga and our own Club Captain, Patrick
Chieng, could not escape the fate of having to finish at least a bowl of tuak
on the stage.
After the prize presentation, most of the participants stayed back to continue
enjoying the live band performance.

members as well as to the public. Many interesting activities were
lined up for all age groups such as balloon stepping, karaoke, eating
competition, fishing, hula hoop and lots more. One of the interesting activities
during the Family Day was the colouring competition, where the best colouring of the car picture
provided by the sponsor will be reproduced on the real car. A big thank you to Ismaco
Automobile Sdn Bhd for sponsoring the colouring competition.
Over 20 food, bargain and exhibition stalls were set up for the two days including
Public Mutual, Ismaco Automobile Sdn Bhd, Hap Seng Auto Sdn Bhd, Red
Bookshop, Thank Food Sdn Bhd, Sugar Bun, Singapore Chicken Rice and many
more. There was also an art booth which displayed the paintings produced
by the handicapped.
The event kicked off on Saturday with fancy dress competition and
ended with the well participated KGS Karaoke competition. The
karaoke which was divided into two categories gave the judges
a hard time to decide on the winners as there were too
many ‘Akademi Fantasia’ potential singers.
On Sunday, over 50 fishing enthusiasts including
members of Kuching Spinal Injuries Association
took part in the fishing competition held at
Siol starting from 6.45 a.m. The fun
continued with mummia games,
colouring competition and lots
more. There were also lots of
lucky draws awaiting the
lucky ones including a
Sony Playstation 2 as
the Grand Lucky
Draw prize.

SWINGING COUPLES
Chan Siew Yan the initiator of this ballsweep has again come up with 20 couples to
swing themselves at Siol and Demak on 14th June. It was as usual fun but unlike the
mixed greensome, each couple has to play their own game and their nett scores
were added together to be able to be proclaimed as swinging winners. Joe Sr. was
swinging from tree to tree and fairways to fairways with Teo Whye Jin and he did
very well on Siol but punctured at Demak. We call that “Hilang Steam”...........age is
catching up Uncle....Stamina was all drained out on the first nine!!!! I know he tried
very hard to impress Jin but.........at 62 years old that was too much for him. Never
mind, next year do try again. The rest of the swinging Janes and Tarzans have their
own sad stories to tell, the ‘ifs’ and other petty excuses to blame for their bad
scores.

Lunch at the Pavilion was as usual satisfying with good choices of food ordered by

MIXED GREENSOME
The ladies had been invited by the K30 group to play an Alternate
Tee off Mixed Greensome. It was based on 50% of total aggregate
and partners were randomly drawn. This is the harder version of the
usual best ball mixed greensome game as there is no best ball to
choose from. All of the participants had fun but the 20 ladies that
took up the challenge came back with disappointing scores, growling
and panting over poor shots, careless and unforced errors made by
them and their partners. We
were told later over lunch that
Martina Sim and her partner
Zabidi were hitting from bunker
to bunker (an eye for an eye, I
suppose!). They had a gruesome
day instead of greensome
day!!!! Of course as usual the
lunch hall was buzzing with sad
and funny encounters.
The ladies would like to extend
our utmost thanks and gratitude
to K30 and especially Hj Suut
who generously took the lunch
tab. As promised by the
organisers they would like to
have another game after Hari
Raya. We look forward to the
game!

Gym Instructor
Today, one out of five adults suffers from lower back
pain. Due to previous weight training and basketball
game, I have myself experienced back pain problem
especially when I do certain exercise which link to the
low back muscle, such as Pully Row, Incline Bench press
sit-up etc.
Back pain can hit anyone, for most
of us; the prime cause of back pain
is a strain from overexertion or
heavy lifting. If you are involved in
sports, sometimes it’s almost
impossible to avoid back injuries.
Certain people have even genetic
back problem. These people
should avoid extreme arching of
the back; you should get
consultation from your doctor or
specialist before you can start
exercising.
Here are a few tips to prevent you from
injuries:
Always start a training
session or exercise with a
general warm-up and
stretching. Maybe some
light 10 minutes of
stationary biking for overall
blood circulation. Then you
should do a specific
stretching routine involving your exercise muscle area,
but don’t overstretch!! Mild stretching is good because
it can help to keep tight muscle tissue from tearing under
stress.
If you are suffering from back injury, start your session
with a hot bath and a bit of stationary bike riding to
increase circulation to the injury area. A loosening-up
How to Avoid
Back Injury
massage is also good, and then you can start to exercise
with your exercise routine.
Training safety
Do leg extensions one leg at a time. Do Leg Curls with
moderate weights and higher repetitions. Do Bench Press
with your feet propped up so your lower back doesn’t
arch. Do Lateral Dumbbell raises with your back
supported. Do Bicep Curls rather than heavier cheating
curls. Do Sited Pully Row, rather then unsupported
Barbell Bent-Over Rows. Then, when you are done with
training, always remember to do stretching and cool-down
exercise. If you experience any severe pain, go to a doctor
immediately.

A serial killer is stalking the streets of New Orleans. The victims

Eve Renner knows our lady of virtues hospital well. As the daughter

O
ne hole behind
A man playing on a new golf course got confused as to
what hole he was on. He saw a lady playing ahead of
him. He walked up to her and asked if she knew what
hole he was playing. She replied, “I’m on the 7th hole,
and you’re a hole behind me, so you must be on the
6th hole.” He thanked her and went back to his golf.
On the back nine, the same thing happened, and he
approached the lady again with the same request. She
said, “I’m on the 14th, you are a hole behind me, so
you must be on the 13th.” Once again he thanked her.
He finished his round and went into the club house
and saw the lady sitting at the end of the bar. He
went up to her and said, “Let me buy you a drink to
show my appreciation for your help.” He started a
conversation and asked her what kind of work she
did. She said she was in sales, and he said he was in
sales also. He asked what she sold.
She replied, “If I told you, you would only laugh.”
”No, I wouldn’t,” he said.
She said, “I sell tampons.”
With that he fell on the floor laughing so hard.
She said, “See, I knew you would laugh.”
”That’s not what I’m laughing at,” he replied. “I’m a
toilet paper salesman, so I’m STILL one hole behind
you!”

A senior golfer had owned an 18-hole golf course
a few years after his retirement from active golf.
He had a large pond in the back of the course,
fixed up really nicely, along with some picnic
tables, horseshoe courts, and some apple and
peach trees. The pond was properly shaped and
fixed up for swimming when it was built.
One evening, after a round of golf, the senior
golfer decided to go down to the pond, as he hadn’t
been there for a while, and look at it. He grabbed
a five gallon bucket to bring back some fruit.
As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting
and laughing with glee. When he came closer, he
realised it was a bunch of young women skinnydipping in his pond. He made the women aware of
his presence and they all went to the deep end to
shield themselves.
One of the women shouted to him, ‘We’re not
coming out until you leave!’
The senior golfer frowned and replied, ‘I didn’t
come down here to watch you ladies swim naked
or make you get out of the pond naked.’ Holding
the bucket up he said, ‘I’m here to feed the
alligator.’
Moral of the story: Old men may move slow but
can still think fast.
