Message from terry Torkildson, General Manager
Sioux Falls residents were treated to a great mix of events at the Sioux
Falls Arena in 2012, leading to a sharp increase in overall attendance
and average attendance figures for the year.
More than 430,000 people attended 144 events at the Arena. The
diverse lineup of events included family friendly shows (Disney Live
AND Sesame Street in the same year), comedy (Rodney Carrington),
rock concerts (including Grammy Award and American Idol winner
Kelly Clarkson), Christian music concerts (including TobyMac), as
well as WWE wrestling, Monster Trucks and, new this year, the World
Juggling Federation competition.
The Summit League Basketball Tournament set a record for ticket sales in its fourth year at the Sioux Falls
Arena. SMG has a great working relationship with the Sioux Falls Sports Authority and the City of Sioux
Falls in hosting the Division I tournament.
The Argus Leader RibFest set a single-day attendance record in 2012 as the 15th annual “backyard
barbeque” was again very well received by the public. Our strong partnerships with the city’s tenant sports
teams led to our working with the teams on youth basketball and hockey events.
We continue to support the community through donations and group volunteer activities at local events.
Individual staff members also participate on their own with various community projects, serving on local
non-profit boards, belonging to civic groups, and being active with industry organizations.
SMG Sioux Falls wishes to thank the City of Sioux Falls for its confidence in awarding us the new contract
to manage the Arena, Orpheum Theater Center, the Sioux Falls Convention Center and the Denny
Sanford PREMIER Center. We look forward to making each of these facilities a success.

sales & Marketing
With more attention being paid to social media applications in event marketing across the country, the Sioux Falls
Arena and Orpheum Theater Center enjoyed growing Facebook fan bases in 2012. The Arena more than doubled
its Facebook “likes” from 761 to 1,703. The Orpheum Facebook page enjoyed similar success, growing from 802 to
1,105 during the year.
All of the sign inventory owned by the Sioux Falls Arena remained under contract throughout 2012, with one
exception—and efforts are underway to find a sponsor for that sign. That meant overall signage income for 2012
remained steady.
Average attendance at events increased in 2012. Increased attendance means new ticket buyers, which in turn leads
to an increase in our overall Front Row e-newsletter subscriptions. The email database topped out at about 27,000
subscribers by the end of the year, an increase of about 3,000 from the beginning of the year.
Meanwhile, a new wedding brochure was created for the Orpheum Theater Center as one tool to try to increase
wedding rentals. Advertisements were placed in local publications to promote meetings, conferences and seminars
during weekdays.

Sioux Falls Arena:
Events
The Sioux Falls Arena welcomed more than
430,000 people for events in 2012, an
increase in not only total attendance but
average attendance per event.
The Summit League Basketball Tournament
drew record crowds and certainly pleased
many local sports fans as both the South
Dakota State men’s and women’s teams won
conference crowns and earned births to the
NCAA tournament.
A diverse concert lineup included Kelly
Clarkson (who would go on to win a
Grammy Award in the Best Pop Vocal
category for her album “Stronger”),
Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Five Finger
Death Punch, Casting Crowns, TobyMac
and Rodney Carrington, among others.
Strong turnout for the Farm Show and
Sportsmen’s Show also helped boost
attendance.

Summit League 2012
11
ribfest 2012
A record 17,000 people packed into
the Argus Leader RibFest on Saturday
night of the 2012 event, as people
enjoyed rising country music sensation
Gloriana. That turnout helped the 15th
annual summer kick-off event reach
45,000 total attendance.
About 9,000 patrons made their way to
the front of the Mike’s Hard Lemonade
stage for 1980’s hit makers Night
Ranger on Thursday night on a nearly
perfect spring evening in Sioux Falls.
Despite clouds and some brief rain
showers, Friday’s crowd reached
11,000, with the help of “Free Friday”
tickets from Campbell’s Supply and
local headliner The Spill Canvas.
Thanks to sponsor Sanford Health,
Sunday’s annual KidzFest was
admission free and brought in over
8,000 people and raised more than
$1,800 for Cure Kids Cancer through a
free will offering, topping the previous
year’s mark of $1,500.
Several awards were handed out over
the weekend. After taking home nine
consecutive People’s Choice Awards,
Desperado’s BBQ Company of Ohio
was denied its tenth straight crown by
another popular “ribber,” Willingham’s
World Champion BBQ of Memphis.
Meanwhile, a group of local judges
named their Critic’s Choice selections.
Porky ‘n Beans, from Port St. Lucie,
Florida, took the top honors, followed
by Aussom Aussie of Australia-- which
earned its second straight runner up
trophy. Willingham’s added to its
trophy collection by taking third.

sioux Falls Skyforce
The Sioux Falls Skyforce tipped off its
24th season at the Sioux Falls Arena in
November. The Skyforce is a member
of the NBA Development League, the
official minor league of the NBA. The
Skyforce’s NBA affiliates for the 2012-13
season are the Miami HEAT, Minnesota
Timberwolves, Orlando Magic and
Philadelphia 76ers.
Jarvis Varnado earned a call-up to the
Boston Celtics on Dec. 24 and ended up
signing with the Miami HEAT for the
remainder of the 2012-13 season.
15
Sioux Falls stampede
The Sioux Falls Stampede brought in a new
head coach and general manager in 2012,
hiring Cary Eades for the two positions in
May. Coach Eades holds a very impressive
coaching resume that includes 15 years of
coaching at the University of North Dakota
(1984-91 & 2004-12). Eades came to the
“Herd” after spending the eight previous
seasons at the University of North Dakota,
where he helped the program capture at
least one championship each year.
Eades coached 17 players who went on to
play in the NHL while at UND, including
former Stampede stars Joe Finley, Brad
Malone and T.J. Oshie.
The Stampede finished their 2011-12 season
as one of only five USHL teams to average
more than 3,000 in attendance and over
90,000 total attendance.
16
Sioux Falls Storm
The Sioux Falls Storm kept their winning
tradition alive in 2012, hosting and winning
yet another United Bowl Championship
game in front of a sellout crowd at the
Sioux Falls Arena.
With the team’s acquisition of their sixth
championship and an undefeated season
(17-0), the Storm was deemed as The
Capitol of Indoor Football.
The team was pleased to have several of
its players receive honors from the Indoor
Football League (IFL). Quarterback Chris
Dixon was recognized once again as the
IFL’s MVP and Offensive Player of the Year.
Dixon received these honors during two
consecutive seasons in both 2011 and 2012. 17

orpheum theater
center: Events
Anchored by the Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Society and Sioux Empire Community Theatre productions,
the Orpheum Theater Center enjoyed a wide range of events that included concerts, plays, musicals, dance
recitals, comedy shows, conferences, banquets, meetings, weddings, and more.
Several events held on the stage of the Historic Orpheum Theater are quickly becoming annual staples for
Sioux Falls audiences. Included among those events are An Evening of Irish Music to usher in St. Patrick’s
Day celebrations, and the South Dakota Advertising Federation’s “ADDY” awards recognizing our state’s
top talents in the advertising arts.
Audiences also enjoyed another “tradition” at the Orpheum Theater Center: a Sculpture Garden in the
courtyard, which is visible and accessible through a floor-to-ceiling glass wall in the main lobby. The
sculptures featured in the garden are leased from the Sculpture Walk.
SMG will continue its efforts to book more business functions, such as meetings, seminars and
conferences, as well as weddings. Despite a very busy schedule of events, there are still opportunities for
groups to use the center during weekdays year-round, and on weekends during the summer months.
27
28
Sculpture Garden
For the third year, SMG Sioux Falls leased
four sculptures for the outdoor courtyard at
the Orpheum Theater Center.
The project has its roots in 2010, when the
Orpheum Theater Center board of directors
unanimously proposed placing sculptures at
the facility. The sculptures were previously
juried and approved through the Sculpture
Walk process.
The 2012 sculptures were:
Dance of Life – Dan McDermott
Portrait of a Bird - Annick Ibsen
Kneeling Boy – Eric Thorsen
Samurai Dancer – Craig Snyder

Savor Activity Report
Savor finished up its tenure at the Sioux Falls Arena
with another solid year. Ahead of budget and ahead
of the game, we ended the year with minimal menu
and pricing changes in order to coordinate a smooth
transition out of our contract term.
For the past 9-plus years, our Food and Beverage
Director has TIPS trained our beer staff. Our goal has
been to be responsible servers of alcohol and we pride
ourselves in being 99% TIPS trained. We have always
understood that becoming a responsible server doesn’t
happen on its own. We continually trained our staff
to feel comfortable in situations where alcohol is an
ingredient. They understood the responsibility that
comes along with the job and they took it very seriously.
Serving food safely also is something we have taken a lot
of pride in. We had four Serv Safe Certified Employees
on staff, so we could monitor the building and all
part-time staff on a consistent basis. Temperature logs,
manager checklists and internal health inspection reports
were completed during events.
Our Food and Beverage Director also received an
award from the Office of the Secretary of Defense –
Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. The
patriotic Employer award is given for contributing to
national security and protecting liberty and freedom by
supporting employee participation in America’s National
Guard and Reserve Force.
With the contract ending December 31st, we were able
to donate food and other items to the St Francis House
and The Banquet. We always believed in supporting
our community – almost 100% of our purchases were
with local Sioux Falls/South Dakota businesses. Variety
Foods, Lakota Foods, Boss’s Chicken and Pizza, Family
Treats, Country Hearth, Servall Linens were all longstanding partners of Savor/SMG.

Dear Terry,
On behalf of the Sioux Falls Arena and Convention Center Board of Directors, I wanted to
congratulate you and your entire SMG team for a successful year in 2012.
The long standing relationship between the City of Sioux Falls and SMG is evidence of the
outstanding work you, your employees and your entire company do in managing the Sioux Falls
Arena. I know there are many full-time and part-time staff who take great pride in caring for the
Arena, greeting ticket holders, managing the day-to-day operations, and volunteering in our
community.
I also want to wish you great success in the coming years as you add the Sioux Falls Convention
Center and Denny Sanford PREMIER Center to your management responsibilities. I know you’ll
take on those duties with the same hard work and dedication that has been evident to date.
Best wishes for a successful 2013—I look forward to working with you and your team in the
