Step back in time with The Opera House, a three-story historic building in
downtown Howell that was built in 1881. It was the area's most prominent
entertainment venue until 1924, when the typical Opera House entertainment
began to fade and it was shut down. Today guests are welcome to visit or rent
the renovated first floor for a variety of public activities (Winter Marketplace,
Open Studio, Acoustic Café) and private events (weddings, receptions, parties,
meetings, dinners, and exhibits) or take a tour of the un-touched second floor
theater. Your interest will help the Livingston Arts Council restore the building
to its original grandeur. It is a jewel set in time in its unique and beautiful
location. Come visit! Call for hours.

BRIGHTON
HARTLAND
The most unique feature of downtown Brighton is its lovely and tranquil
setting next to the Mill Pond. Children enjoy playing in the 10,000 square-foot
Imagination Station playground or watching the families of ducks and geese
that make the Mill Pond their home. Visitors can take a walk along the Tridge,
through the riverside boardwalk to the connecting restaurants. Sunday
evenings in the summer, families gather with blankets & picnic baskets to save
their favorite spot next to the Mill Pond as they relax and enjoy the free
outdoor Gazebo Concerts. Sponsored by the Mayor’s Commission on Art in
Public Places, the Brighton Biennial outdoor sculptural display is a visual treat
for art lovers of all ages. This artistic exhibit features 27 different sculptures
which can be found throughout downtown. Whether on a search for art
galleries, boutiques, gift shops, a farmers market or just a great place to eat,
you will find it in Brighton — don’t miss out.
Hartland’s classic setting is perfect for those who enjoy exploring and
discovering little known quaint villages. Historic buildings like the Florence B.
Dearing Museum and the Hartland Music Hall offer a glimpse into the lives of
Hartland’s early settlers. During the Hartland AutumnFest, the community
comes together in a delightful celebration of the season that includes craft
booths, food, fun, a flea market and entertainment.

FOWLERVILLE
PINCKNEY/ LAKELAND/ HAMBURG / HELL
Some of us remember the days when we could visit a small town and find
one-of-a-kind shops like a homemade candy store or an old-fashioned dimestore with wooden floors. Fowlerville is just that kind of community. Merchants
in the downtown area still offer friendly service and are happy to see visitors
in the area. When planning your visit you may want to arrive during the
Fowlerville Family Fair where each July, visitors can experience what it was
like to be raised where farming & 4-H is king. Originally an agricultural
community, Fowlerville still celebrates the farming traditions of a by-gone era.
While at the fair, you can expect to find a demolition derby, tractor pull or live
stock auction and you will want to save room for an elephant ear and corn dog.
During the fair, visit the Livingston Centre Historical Village. This is
Fowlerville’s turn-of-the-century historic collection of buildings, including a
one-room schoolhouse, barbershop, and cobblers shop to name a few, all open
for public tours during the fair.
Visitors traveling to the Pinckney / Lakeland / Hamburg / Hell area are
impressed by the natural surroundings, such as the chain of lakes and 11,000
acres of parks. Outdoor activity enthusiasts enjoy fishing, boating, canoeing,
camping, hiking, and mountain bike riding. There are pleasant villages and
charming communities where you can find all sorts of gear and supplies for an
outdoor adventure. Lakelands Trail State Park is one of four linear state parks in
Michigan that has been converted from abandoned railroad corridors. It passes
through wooded areas, rolling farmland, around lakes, marshes, parkland,
commercial and residential properties. Approximately 20 miles long with an
asphalt or gravel surface, the park connects these pleasant communities that
welcome visitors. “Sinfully delicious” is the phrase most often heard by patrons
that frequent Screams Ice Cream in the one and only, Hell. A visit to this area is a
relaxing and welcome change from the frantic pace of big city life.

canoeing, high ropes adventure, or renting a boat are some of the favorite
indulgences of nature lovers. The Pinckney Recreation Area is well known for
its Potawatomi Trail, which is rated as one of the most challenging mountain
biking trails in the Midwest. Once you experience the breathtaking natural
landscape of rolling hills, mature trees, tranquil lakes and well-groomed trails
you will want to return to Livingston County’s parks again and again.
With 50,000 acres of parks in the county, there is an abundance of outdoor
activities for all visitors to enjoy throughout the year. Escape from the hectic
pace of everyday life while discovering the natural beauty of some of the most
underutilized parks in the state of Michigan. Mountain biking, horseback riding,
hiking, cross-country and downhill skiing, snowshoeing, fishing, swimming,
hunting, picnicking, camping, skateboarding, bike riding, roller-blading,

Meijer Park is an outdoor in-line skate and skateboard recreational facility. The
park offers a 1/4 mile in-line path with banked turns. A 20,000 square-foot
skateboard obstacle area plus a 24 foot-wide mini-half pipe are some of the
favorites among the park’s patrons. Helmets are required and available for rent.
Hours may vary with the season and are subject to weather.

Howell Public Schools, Off N Highlander Way
517.546.3500, www.cityofhowell.org
The city of Howell welcomes visitors to Parker Skate Park with free admission.
Bring your own safety equipment, skateboards and in-line skates to this 14,000
square-foot all-concrete park. Built on three levels, the park features a quarter
pipe, curved and straight ramps, stairs, pyramids, platforms, rails and more. It is
truly a street skater’s dream. The park is open during non-school hours until dark.
For more information, call the City of Howell.
CANOEING & KAYAKING
The most massive and fascinating natural attractions in Livingston County are
the two chain-of-lakes. The Island Lake chain allows visitors to explore seven
lakes and never have to take the canoe out of the water. Island Lake also offers
camping and hiking and its section of the Huron River is a designated natural
area. You can launch your canoe or kayak near the dam in Hell before you explore
this chain of seven lakes nestled in the Pinckney Recreation Area.

Horseback riding is taken to new heights in Livingston County. There are
even campgrounds designed to accommodate horses. You can ride through
over 7,500 acres of pristine, state-owned land where gently rolling hills,
natural spring-fed lakes and canopied, tree-covered trails are commonplace.
Every season provides a spectacular view of the scenic landscapes. Hayride
enthusiasts can also schedule special group outings.
