ANNUAL REPORT
2014
HANDS ARE FOR HELPING
After 37 years, the impact The Women’s Center has on Southeast
Wisconsin continues to be strong and growing. Our core programs,
helping victims deal with the trauma of domestic violence and sexual
abuse, form the backbone of our services to the community. These are
complemented by providing counseling, transitional living, child care,
a 24-Hour Hotline and other forms of safety, shelter and support. Any
one client situation can quickly become very complex, requiring the skills
and resources of counselors, financial advisors, clergy, social workers,
lawyers and many others. The hallmark of The Women’s Center continues:
providing our services at no cost to our clients.
Public awareness of The Women’s Center increased in 2014 thanks to
increased media presence. There is a strong perception that we are a solid
source of information and assistance for the issues we address and the
communities we serve.
Our Violence Prevention Initiative is being well-received as our pilot
program moves into area schools. This program is focused on reducing
domestic violence and sexual assault by educating young people, notably
grades 6, 7 and 8, about positive behaviors and staying safe. These efforts
will continue to expand as we move beyond the pilot programs.
As funding from some traditional sources is cut or reduced, we continue
to depend on generous contributions from individuals, foundations,
corporations and proceeds from our special fundraising events. Once
again, the Greater Milwaukee Foundation’s Match Day provided significant
funding. All of this support is deeply appreciated.
I extend special recognition and thanks to The Women’s Center staff,
board, volunteers and friends for their dedicated work and commitment in
serving our clients. Their efforts add immeasurably to the clients’ outcomes
as they start to take steps toward a better life.
Thank you for your support of The Women’s Center.
Allan Froehlich, Board President
A LETTER FROM THE
BOARD
PRESIDENT
Dear Friends,
I am proud to present to you this copy of The Women’s Center 2014 Annual
Report which highlights yet another pivotal year for us. We focused our efforts
on our core programs as well as capacity building to ensure our doors are open
for every single individual who needs any one of our supportive services. Your
gifts made it possible for us to provide an even higher level of crisis intervention
and supportive services to women and children who have been hurt by
domestic violence and/or sexual abuse.
Your gifts helped:
• The family who successfully fled their abuser, came into our shelter and
not only survived but thrived.
• The child who smiled for the first time in a very long time because our
children’s advocates made them feel safe, loved, happy.
• The survivor who obtained a job with livable wages that allowed her to
move forward with economic self-sufficiency and a life free from violence.
• The caller to our Hotline speaking for the very first time about the abuse
she’s suffered at the hand of someone who said they love her and being
told by our shelter advocate, “You don’t deserve that,” helping her feel
less alone.
• Survivors coming for support groups or individual counseling to work
at reducing the traumatic effects of the violence they experienced.
• The 6th, 7th, and 8th graders who learned how to build and maintain
a healthy relationship and to peacefully resolve conflict through our
Violence Prevention Initiative.
We hope you find the information in this report useful and that you will
continue to walk with us on this journey towards a violence-free, peaceful
community. Your unwavering generosity is the vital fuel that keeps us moving
forward! On behalf of the entire Women’s Center staff and board, I thank you
for providing hope to those in need of our comprehensive, life-saving programs.
Peacefully,
Angela Mancuso, Executive Director

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
PROGRAMS AND SERVICES
The Women’s Center offers group and
individual counseling to adult and child
survivors of domestic violence. In 2014,
286 adults, 92 children and 42 parents
of child witnesses of domestic violence
received domestic violence counseling
at The Women’s Center.
20,695
HOURS
182 INDIVIDUALS & 10 GROUPS
PROVIDED 20,695 VOLUNTEER HOURS
EMERGENCY SHELTER
Our emergency shelter provides a safe
and immediate refuge for women and
their children fleeing their homes because
of domestic abuse and sexual violence.
In addition to receiving basic needs,
shelter residents have access to our
comprehensive services that promote
healing and independence. In 2014, we
provided 6,793 nights of care, 20,379
meals and 13,586 snacks to 281 women
and children.
TRANSITIONAL LIVING
Emergency shelter provides immediate
safety for the short-term but often is
not enough time for women to become
financially independent and locate
permanent housing. Our Transitional
Living program provides safe and
affordable housing where survivors
can live up to two years. In 2014, 33
women and 32 children participated
in our Transitional Living program.
THE HOTLINE IS STAFFED
24-HOUR HOTLINE
Our confidential 24-Hour Hotline provides
a direct link between people in crisis and
The Women’s Center. The Hotline is staffed
24 hours a day, 365 days a year. In 2014,
we answered 5,897 crisis calls.
SEXUAL ASSAULT AND
ABUSE PROGRAMS
The Women’s Center offers counseling to
adult and child survivors of sexual assault
and sexual abuse through individual and
group counseling. There were 87 adults,
26 children, and 180 parents of sexually
abused children who received services
through this program in 2014.

LEGAL ADVOCACY
Our Legal Advocates staff offices at
The Women’s Center and the Waukesha
County Courthouse helping survivors
of domestic abuse and sexual violence
navigate the court system. We assist with
obtaining restraining orders and provide
advocacy and support throughout the
entire court process. A total of 257
clients used these services in 2014.
EDUCATION AND PREVENTION
CHILD ABUSE PREVENTION SERVICES
This program is designed to reduce the
likelihood of family violence, abuse and
neglect by providing emergency respite
and onsite childcare, crisis telephone
counseling, individual and group family
counseling and parenting classes. In
2014, 84 adults and 318 children used
these services
328 & 114
ADULTS
CHILDREN
RECEIVED DOMESTIC
VIOLENCE COUNSELING
VOLUNTEER INVOLVEMENT
Volunteers continue to play a vital
role at The Women’s Center. In 2014,
182 individuals and 10 groups of
volunteers made a difference at
The Women’s Center.
PROGRAMS
& SERVICES
Our Violence Prevention Advocate
provides education and prevention
programming about domestic
abuse and sexual violence to youth
at local schools and other groups
in Waukesha and surrounding
counties. Education is provided
through speaking engagements
and training sessions. In 2014, this
program reached 4,740 individuals.
EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM
The Employment Program prepares
women for work, often after years of
being barred from working outside
the home. Clients identify their
strengths and employment objectives,
increase their job readiness skills
through mock interviews, learn
resume writing, and begin mentoring
with professionals working in the
business community. In 2014, we
served 203 women.
Note: There may be some duplication
in these numbers, as a client may
have used more than one or all of
The Women’s Center’s services and
would, therefore, be recorded as
receiving services in each program
area. These numbers reflect the
full range of services a client can
access and demonstrate the true
use of our services.

A LETTER FROM
THE TREASURER
The financial position of The Women’s
Center remains healthy as confirmed
by the 2014 audited balance sheet.
2014 performance reflects a minor
0.04% decrease in unrestricted net
assets, which includes $87,352 of
depreciation. Total 2014 revenues
represent an 8% increase over total
revenues reported in 2013, with total
expenses only increasing by a modest
3%. The Women’s Center’s cash
position continues to be strong and we
own our buildings and other property.
The Women’s Center has no significant
outstanding debt.
The Women’s Center practices sound
fiscal management. Budgets are
carefully prepared and reviewed
monthly by a Finance Committee and
our Board. We take very seriously
our obligation to our donors to use
contributions wisely to support our
mission of providing safety, shelter and
support to women and their families.
Donor support allows us to offer
programs and services free of charge.
The valuable resources The Women’s
Center provides in our communities
will be maintained with strong
individual and business support. There
will always be financial challenges.
Sustained and innovative fundraising
efforts, diligent work in grant writing,
success in special events and ongoing
expense control will need to be
maintained. Continued financial health
allows us to provide our vital services
to women and families in need of help
and hope.
Derek Arnold, Treasurer
