Fertilizer
- Adapt fertilization to soil analysis.
- No nitrogen late in the growing period to avoid growth
cracks and second growth.
- Nitrogen (N): 100% in comparison to other medium
early varieties.
- Apply 2/3 before planting and 1/3 as top dressing.
- Potassium and phosphate fertilization as standard
advice.
- To prevent bruising, use fresh Potassium.
- Manganese and magnesium will encourage a strong
foliage and prevent premature senescence.

Pre-treatment and planting
- ALCANDER has a long dormancy.
- Pre-sprouting helps to advance the growth.
- Allow the seed to acclimatize to the local conditions before planting.
- If an apical sprout is present, remove it and plant with small white buds.
- ALCANDER reacts well to the cutting of big sized seed. Optimum result from 3-4 weeks prior
to planting.
- Always treat ALCANDER seeds against Rhizoctonia.
- Planting with small white sprouts produces the best results.
Growing attention points
- Emergence is uniform with a good foliage development.
- ALCANDER has a good tolerance to metribuzin (Sencor).
- Regular irrigation minimizes the risk of growth cracks.
- Irrigation is advised under dry circumstances.
- Limit irrigation in second part of the season, to stimulate accumulation of dry matter.
- Preventive spraying against Phytophthora is advised.
Haulm killing and harvest
- Start to measure the dry matter content about 3 weeks before the expected harvest date.
- Use chemicals with a strong effect on stems to encourage easy tuber detachment.
- ALCANDER can be harvested after 90-100 days.
- When harvested green or shortly after haulm killing, ensure quick drying and cooling for a
good skin finish.
- Tubers have a quick skin set, but have thin skins. Pay extra attention at harvest.
- ALCANDER is moderately susceptible to bruising. Reduce drop heights and avoid
mechanical damage.
Storage
- ALCANDER is an early variety and therefore sales are normally within 5 months after
harvest.
- Take care of the wound healing period.
- Store at a stable 7°C.
- ALCANDER has a long dormancy. Sprout inhibitors are only needed for late deliveries.
