What a typical day may look like
Throughout the day, children participate in a variety of
experiences designed to develop the whole child. Topics of
exploration are developed out of children’s interests, as well
as from teacher provocations. This guided, discovery-based
curriculum includes:
• Individual, small, and large group projects and activities.
• Learning center/choice time.
• Outdoor play on our natural outdoor playscapes.
• Stepping Stones also offers: rest time, field trips, and
nutritious breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack.
Great communication with our families is a key to our
success!
We pride ourselves on our excellent teacher-parent communication. In addition to family conferences twice a year, families
receive regular newsletters with recaps and previews of activities,
daily highlights, and recommendations for parents on how they
can extend learning beyond the school day.
Families help us thrive
Families are an important component of our program. Special
classroom family events are planned throughout the year.
Parental involvement and input are also invited through a yearly
evaluation and volunteer opportunities in and for the classrooms.

STEM in all Hopkins preschools
Children are natural explorers, problem-solvers, and sense-makers.
What they explore depends on the materials, experiences, and support
we provide them. All Hopkins preschool programs incorporate STEM
(Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) curriculum.

What is Reggio-inspired?
With a Reggio-inspired curriculum, kids are encouraged to explore. Teachers help students experiment and discover, at the same time
acquiring for themselves important learning concepts. Projects often originate from children’s interests or ideas. Teachers then decide how
to support skills and understanding using topics that are meaningful to the children. The best way to describe Reggio-inspired curriculum
in practice is to share a real-life example from one of our classrooms. The following is an example of how one exploration encouraged
children to use important academic skills to notice, compare, discuss, explain, and wonder together:

A while back, the children used magnifying glasses and the Zoomy microscope to look at a variety of nature items. Some of the items
were sticks, pinecones, leaves, seeds, and wheat grass. Later, at our morning meeting, we discussed what we had observed. The children
had noticed many things. Some saw dots, lines, holes, and colors that they hadn’t noticed before using a magnifier.
*Home phone_________________________ *Work phone___________________________ *Cell phone__________________________
One observation really caught our attention. A child told us that there had been a drop of water on the leaf he was investigating with the
Zoomy microscope. He said he couldn’t see the water, only the leaf. I thought that was an interesting observation. Why did he think that
was? He thought about it for a moment and then said, “I think it is because it was camouflaged.” I suggested that maybe we should think
about that more in depth. Then, another child chimed in. He thought the reason was because you could see through the water. He had
described transparency! We decided that we would need to investigate this topic some more.

This STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) experience expanded a simple magnification activity into a conversation
about other complex concepts these children already knew something about. A typical experience became a true investigation and
brainstorming session not hinged on everyone arriving at the same conclusion, but becoming excited learners poised to experiment and
process what they explore.
