I.
How often when on fields of sport, we’ve seen our teams go through,
The very air was rent in twain with cheers for white and blue.
We knew that victory then was ours, all else we might eschew
If only we could wave and sing our colors, white and blue.
CHORUS:
Hurrah Hurrah Candor High School!
Hurrah Hurrah for the white and the blue!
Hurrah Hurrah Hurrah Hurrah!
Hurrah for the white and the blue!
II.
One color stands for purity, the other tints the clouds,
And when together both disclose, we’re happy as the gods.
We ask no other emblem, no other sign to view,
We only ask to see and cheer our colors, white and blue.
III.
And then upon the breast of her whose heart beats warm and true,
It is the dearest sight of all to see our white and blue.
She wears it with a smile so bright, it wakes our hearts anew
To swear eternal loyalty to dear old white and blue.
IV.
And so through all the years to come in midst of toil and care,
We’ll get new inspiration from our colors waving there.
And when to all our High School life we’ve said our last adieu,
We’ll never say adieu to thee, our colors, white and blue.

JR/SR HIGH SCHOOL NEWS & NOTES
A Message from the Jr/Sr High School Principal...
I am pleased to report that we are off to a great start to the school
year! As a district, we are challenging teachers and students to
develop a growth mindset (Dweck). This will challenge teachers to
create more interesting and engaging lessons, and inspire students
to raise their own expectations on the quality of work they produce.
Research has shown that having a growth mindset, instead of fixed
mindset, allows for a greater opportunity to meet personal and
professional success in the future.
I am excited to share that Candor Jr./Sr. High School is opening an online Parent Portal. This
will allow parents to have access to student grades, attendance, and homework. In order to
gain access, parents will need to provide the school with an active email account. If you receive
School Messenger notifications through your email, then you are set with an email account. If
you do not, a flyer has been sent home with your child asking for an email account. Please
return the flyer with your email address, and we will be sure your email is put into our system.
As we approach winter break, my wish is that everyone has an enjoyable and festive holiday
season. I look forward to a great start to 2016!

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY NEWS
The Selection Process:
The National Honor Society is a nationally recognized organization that seeks to honor and encourage
academic achievement and at the same time help young men and women develop ideals of character,
service and leadership. Membership in the National Honor Society is viewed as both an honor and a
commitment to living up to these ideals.
Eligibility for membership in the Fanny Sackett Smith chapter of the National Honor Society is based on
the following criteria:
* A student must be a sophomore, junior or senior at Candor Jr./Sr. High School and have been
in attendance for 10 weeks or more;
* A student must have earned a cumulative scholastic average of at least 87% beginning
with initial high school enrollment (typically 9th grade);
* A student must demonstrate a commitment to all of the ideals of service, strong character, and
leadership.
Students who have met the scholastic criterion for membership will be provided an application and
asked to complete it, in which they detail the extent to which they have met the other criteria. These
applications are handed out in the month of December each school year. The record of achievement of
students, along with evaluations submitted by the high school faculty, are reviewed and evaluated by
the Faculty Council. The Faculty Council uses a very specific and guided rubric, which then potentially
grants membership by a simple majority vote. The Faculty Council meets after the close of the second
quarter (February) to complete this task. Students who have been selected for membership are inducted
into the National Honor Society at a ceremony held in March.
If students or parents have any questions about eligibility or membership in the National Honor Society,
please contact the NHS advisor, Ms. Westervelt, at the high school.
Our Projects:
The National Honor Society is focusing on multiple community service projects this year. We will host
two blood drives, one already held in November, where we collected 25 units. The second and final drive
will be February 29, 2016 in the High School auditorium. We are tutoring Homework Club students on
Tuesdays and Thursdays between 2:30 and 3:00 p.m. For the third year in a row, we are offering
enrichment activities to the sixth grade students at the end of their school day. Each member has
chosen an activity that they are interested and knowledgeable in, that they can teach. We are very
excited about this opportunity to teach things like making bracelets, pinch pots,
sugar cookie decorating, how to play soccer, and drawing characters!
We will host our annual fund raising All You Can Eat Pancake Dinner in the
High School cafeteria on Thursday, March 31st, from 4:30pm to 6:30pm. Tickets
are $7 in advance or $9 at the door. Children under 12 are free. We will offer
pancakes, butter, syrup, sausage, bacon, juice and coffee. We hope to see you
there!

Greetings from the Athletic Department!
The fall sports season is nearing conclusion, so I hope you all had the opportunity to see
some of our student-athletes participating. I had a great time watching all of our athletes
perform this season. The teams played well, and while some of the teams might have won a few
more games than another – they were all very competitive and the kids all seemed to be
enjoying themselves.
The varsity volleyball and varsity girls soccer team both reached sectional playoffs and
represented the community and school very well with their efforts. Julia Russell finished third
in Cross-Country sectionals and will represent Candor at States again this year – her fourth
year in a row! This is the 12th season in a row that Candor has been represented at States –
and no other school is even close! The football team had issues keeping the roster at or above
the minimum number of players necessary to compete, but had some great moments during the
season. We did keep ‘The Jug’ in Candor for another season - which seems to be a very
important goal for the boys every season! In boys soccer, Adam Nichols was named Division
Offensive MVP and each player on the team definitely showed improvement throughout the
season. They were always exciting to watch.
The winter season is underway as all practices started on November 9th – and the
modified sports teams’ games started on November 6th. To be kept up to date with the latest
schedule changes this winter season (and we all know there will be some), go to
www.schedulegalaxy.com and sign up to receive alerts for your favorite team. You will be
notified via email the moment a change has been made and you will receive another alert when
the game has officially been moved to its new date. Don’t be the last to know! Schedules are
already online at the same web address.
More changes are coming to the website and don’t forget to sign up for live game tweets!
@CandorSports. I will be updating game results for whatever home team happens to be playing
that night just in case you can’t make it. Have a great Holiday Season!

ELEMENTARY NEWS & NOTES
A Message from the Director of Curriculum & Instruction / Elementary Principal…
Dear Candor School Families:
I am pleased to announce that we had a successful start to our school year. Thank you to
Mrs. Katie Volpicelli for taking the reigns of the elementary school and continuing with our
priorities of creating a safe, respectful, responsible and caring environment.
Mrs. Volpicelli began Fall Festival Weekend with a special addition to their family…little
Sofia. The Volpicelli family is doing well and would like to thank our school community for the
thoughtful gestures over the past few weeks. I have had the pleasure of filling in during Mrs.
Volpicelli’s leave. She is hoping to return to work the week of December 14th.
During the first month of school, (in my role as Director of Curriculum and Instruction)
we held a variety of meetings to ensure our efforts for creating a coordinated curriculum
Kindergarten through Twelfth grade. I am excited to continue this important work with our
teachers.
Many of our teachers have also started presenting their Project Based Learning (PBL)
lessons that were created during summer workshops. The lessons have been authentic and
engaging. Watching the work first-hand has been fun and inspiring. So our families can get a
peek into what I’m talking about, we are working on creating a space on our school website to
share student work.
Thanks again for sharing your kids with us. We have a great school, great kids and a
great community.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Nichols

NEWS & NOTES
8th Grade Inquiry-Based Project and Field Trip to Seneca Falls, NY
In July, Secretary of the Treasury, Jacob Lew, announced that a woman would be
replacing Alexander Hamilton’s image on the ten dollar bill, and that the new theme would be
democracy. The Treasury Department also decided to make the public a part of this historic
process. Asking for feedback and suggestions on which woman should represent democracy, the
Treasury received over 1.5 million responses through Facebook, Twitter, and email.
Our 8th grade students took up this amazing challenge set by Secretary of the Treasury
Lew when they visited Seneca Falls, New York, on October 16th. Visiting both the Women’s
Hall of Fame and the Women’s Rights Museum, students learned about the significance of
women’s roles in our nation’s history. Students were fascinated by the incredible artifacts in the
museum, especially the waterwall between the chapel and the museum, which had the
beginning words of the 1848 Declaration of Sentiments engraved beneath the flowing water. In
addition, students were able to learn about the various 266 women who have been selected for
membership in the Women’s Hall of Fame, including Rosa Parks, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Belva
Lockwood, amongst many other memorable women who have played a significant role in
history.
In English and Social Studies, students discussed the meaning of the word democracy,
and became familiar with some famous quotes surrounding the topic. In small groups, they created their own criteria that they believed reflected the theme of democracy and determined
which attributes this honored woman should possess. Students narrowed their list of names
down to their top choice by doing further research into the lives of the women. Their final task
was to draft a formal business letter to the Honorable Secretary of the Treasury Lew,
referencing important accomplishments
and characteristics of the woman they had
chosen to be on the new ten dollar note.
These letters were then sent to the
Treasury Department for consideration.
The students definitely enjoyed
participating in this challenge by the
Secretary Lew in a task we called “The
New Face of Democracy.” Students showed
just how thoughtful, respectful, and
enthusiastic Candor students were
throughout this project-based unit and
during our visit to Seneca Falls.

TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT
It’s that time of the year again - winter!
Here are just a few reminders for the parents and students this
time of the year:

Please make sure everyone is dressed for the weather.
Tee shirts and shorts are nice, but in the event a bus
breaks down or has to be shut off, they cool down very
quickly.

Watch for school buses. The early morning is much
darker and it is much harder to see students. At bus
stops, please remind children to stand back and wait
for the bus to stop completely before walking up to it.

Due to road conditions, school buses may start a little
earlier to compensate for the weather. Please feel free
to discuss this with your school bus driver, or call the bus
garage (659-3115), if you have any questions or
concerns.

As always, please remember to stop when you see the
red-flashing lights on the bus. It is illegal to pass a
bus with the lights on - even in front of the school.
We are looking forward to safe holidays for everyone. As always, it takes each
of us to ensure the safety of all our children. The Candor Central School District
Transportation Department would like to thank everyone for your continued help.

TAX NEWS & STAR INFORMATION
Candor School District utilizes Tompkins-Seneca-Tioga BOCES for tax collection services. BOCES
performed tax collection through October 31st, at which time, by law, the remaining unpaid collection
was turned over to the respective County Treasurer, and any further tax questions should now be
directed there.
STAR Information
The New York State School Tax Relief Program (STAR) provides homeowners with two types of partial
exemptions from school property taxes. If you earn less than $500,000 and own and live in your home,
you are probably eligible for the STAR exemption.
Two types of STAR exemptions:
Basic STAR

Available for owner-occupied, primary residences where the resident owners’ and their spouses
income is less than $500,000

Exempts the first $30,000 of the full value of a home from school taxes

Submit Form RP-425 Application for School Tax Relief (STAR) Exemption to your local assessor.
Enhanced STAR

Provides an increased benefit for the primary residence of senior citizens (age 65 and older) with
qualifying incomes

Exempts the first $65,300 of the full value of a home from school taxes as of 2016-2017 school tax
bills (unchanged from 2015-2016)

Demonstrate that you meet the income requirement annually in one of two ways:
Apply annually with your assessor: Complete your STAR application (Form RP-425) and
send it to your assessor with a copy of your income tax return(s) for the appropriate income tax;
- or Authorize our department to verify your income eligibility: Submit Form RP425-IVP
School Tax Relief (STAR) Exemption: Optional Income Verification Program to provide your
assessor with your social security number(s) and authorize us to verify your income eligibility. If
you choose this option, generally you will submit Form RP-425, Form RP-425-IVP, and a copy of
your tax return(s) to the assessor in the first year.
STAR exemption apply only to school district taxes; they do not apply to property taxes. Application
forms are available on our website, www.candor.org. Or you may call the District Office at (607)659-5010
to have a copy mailed to you. Your STAR application must be postmarked or received by your assessor’s
office by March 1, 2016. Assessors must notify applicants if the STAR application is denied.
For further STAR information, contact your local assessor’s office, call toll free at 1-888-697-8275, or
