Bob Davis Trophy
Good luck to the best of the Ballarat FL
Junior players who take part in the Junior
Interleague program The Bob Davis Trophy
V Geelong Junior Football this Saturday at
the Spring Creek Reserve in Torquary.
The finest Junior footballers in AFL Victoria
Country will be on display and anyone who
can get along to support our boys and
witness the talent on display will see some
exciting young players of the future!
The BFL won this trophy in 2006, 2007
& 2010 with Geelong taking the honours
in 2008, 2011 and 2012 and no games
played in 2009. After winning the
Goldfields Trophy against the Bendigo
Junior FL last month we are hoping for
another good showing in our 2013 Junior
Interleague program.
The Coaching staff and all players in
the squads have been fantastic in their
preparation, and we wish them all the
very best in the final fixture in 2013 Junior
development program.
Today’s games at the Spring Creek
Reserve will showcase the amazing talent
in our junior ranks and the boys have
been very determined and committed in
attending the training sessions, and we
wish them well today. Go BFNL!

North Queensland to play in a series of
exhibition matches against AFL Cairns
and a combined AFL Townsville and AFL
Mackay side.
At the time of writing this column, the AFL
Goldfields side had successfully overcome
AFL Cairns in fantastic show of skill on the
Sunday afternoon at Cazaly Stadium in
near perfect conditions. After a slow start,
the boys from Victoria started to win the
contested ball and began to assert their
ascendency on their opponents taking a
controlling lead at half time.
The second half saw AFL Goldfields
continue to dominate possession as they
ran the ball well into the wind managing to
score as freely as AFL Cairns in the third
term. The last quarter saw AFL Goldfields
finish the game off in style piling on 6 goals
to 1 to close the game out well.

BFNL Round 10 Football Review
WITH the main bend rounded and the journey down
home straight just starting, Round 10 in the Red
Onion Creative Ballarat Football Netball League
last weekend showed that there’s quite a few teams
about to make the journey down said straight with the
view of continuing the journey well beyond the first
checkpoint.
For three-and-a-half quarters at Alfredton Oval last
Saturday, it looked as if one of the upsets of the
season was a realistic chance, with Ballarat leading
Sunbury in the final quarter despite having trailed at
every change. In the blink of an eye though, Sunbury
took the game away from the Swans with a nine-goal
final quarter to climb back onto the winners list with a
43 point win. Dale Ciunik continued to provide a good
target up forward for the Lions, booting four goals,
with the crafty Xavier Linton and returning Andrew
Duhau booting four and three goals respectively.
Duhau was amongst Sunbury’s better few on the day,
along with Tim Hill, Adam Short and Greg Hay (who
will play for the Victoria Country Under 19’s side this
weekend for the second successive year). Mark Nunn
was Ballarat’s leading forward target with three goals,
with Daniel Kennedy, James Quayle and Nick Garner
all singled out for attention by the Swans’ brass.
North Ballarat City continued their undefeated run
in season 2013, however it took them over a half of
football to break free from Bacchus Marsh’s shackles
before running away with the game in the second half
to record a comprehensive 58 point win. Bacchus
Marsh were able to restrict North City’s run in the
first half and ensure sufficient numbers in defence
to suffocate North City’s forward movements, with
Daniel Velden’s job on keeping the dangerous Derick
Micallef quiet worthy of note. It wasn’t until Bacchus
Marsh coach Doug Hawkins, with a sniff of a famous
win in his nostrils, sent players forward to try and
win possession in the second half that North City
were able to get free, with eight goals from Shaun
Lyle, another great game from reigning Henderson
Medalist Jason McNamara and a break-out
performance from fifth-gamer Mitchell Gilbert allowing
the ladder-leaders to skip away. Velden was fantastic
all day for the Cobras, with Matt Denham, Ryley
Stuhldrier and Tristan Simons also amongst Bacchus
Marsh’s better few.
East Point’s hot start at home against Lake
Wendouree last Saturday gave them all the impetus
they needed to march to a comfortable win - despite
a bout of third-quarter inaccuracy, the Roos recorded
a much needed percentage booster, more than
doubling the Lakers score in their 53 point win. With
the only six goals of the opening quarter, including a
Goal of the Week contender by defender Toby Boyle,
the Roos were able to control the game from there on
in. Coach Dan Jordan booted six goals to become
the first senior player to break the 50 goal barrier in
season 2013, with Bart Phillips, Brad Whittaker and
Brent Fitzpatrick amongst the Roos better few. Lake
Wendouree were able to fight their way back after
their first-quarter shutout, with experienced trio Matt
Tuminello, Tim Malone and Andrew Pitson joining
young gun Eamonn McCuskey as the Lakers better
players on the day.
Melton celebrated their first win for season 2013
in front of their home fans at MacPherson Park last
Saturday, defeating Sebastopol in a high-scoring
affair by 75 points. On a day where forty-seven goals
were kicked between the two sides - including a
second quarter in which fifteen goals were kicked - it
wasn’t until the final quarter where Melton were able
to run away with the game after the Burras fought
valiantly for the opening three quarters to be well
within striking distance at three quarter time. Darren
Haby was the match-winner up forward for Melton,
booting eight first-half goals on his way to eleven for
the match, with Corey Patmore, Matthew Notman
and skipper Jake Gleeson on fire in the midfield for
the Bloods. Jacob Branch booted six goals in an
impressive performance for a Sebastopol side that
desperately wanted to win this game, with big Daniel
Baxter, Cain Edwards and Daniel Parker all standouts
for Sebastopol.
The final match of the round was also arguably the
best, with Darley re-confirming their standing as one
of the sides to watch this season with an impressive
twenty-one point win over Redan at home on Sunday.
After holding the Lions scoreless in the first quarter,
the Devils had to withstand a seven-goal third quarter
by Redan that saw them take the lead before fighting
back hard in the last quarter, booting six goals to the
Lions’ one to record their most impressive win of the
season. Shane Page and Nathan Jackel were again
the stars for the Devils - Page with five goals and
Jackel with an eye-catching performance through
the middle of the ground - with young Jake Ancrum
and the returning Shane O’Bree both excellent for the
Devils. Ryan Waight, who will play for Victoria Country
this weekend, booted four goals for Redan, and
was prominent along with Brendan Peace, Damien
Horbury and Matthew Hyden.

BFNL Round 10 Netball Review
Round 10 of the Gull and Co A Grade Netball
competition last week was definitely a weekend for
the favourites, as the top five sides all squared off
against teams lower than them on the ladder, with
the expected results materialising.
Sunbury had a strong win over Ballarat, winning
67-19 to further confirm their standing as one of the
sides to beat this season. Sophie Gunn was again
in superlative form for the Lions, with skipper Beck
Anstey (nee Locker) and first-gamer Kate Fletcher
also amongst Sunbury’s better players. Ballarat were
best served by Kayla Wilson, Maddi Quayle and
shooter Kelly O’Neill.
North Ballarat City returned to the winners list thanks
to a 64-41 win over a determined Bacchus Marsh much like the senior footy, it took North City over a
half to break away from the Cobras. Stacey Jeffrey
led the way with 32 goals for the Cobras, who couldn’t
withstand a 40-goal second half by North City.
East Point had another impressive victory on the
weekend, defeating a Lake Wendouree side who
had been starting to look like their old selves
of recent times by twenty goals, 56-36. In what
seemed to be the trend last weekend, East Point’s
third quarter set up the game for them, outscoring
the Lakers eighteen goals to five to open up a
match-winning eighteen goal lead at the final
break. Again, it was young gun Lauren Jew and
coach Emma Farrell who led the way for East
Point, combining to score, with young defender
Emma Ryan again impressive for the Roos. Lake
Wendouree received great service from experienced
duo Kara Hart and captain Emma Burton, with
another young gun in Molly Boyle impressing in
green and gold.
Melton didn’t have things all their own way against
Sebastopol last weekend, and even though they led
at every change, the final margin was sixteen goals,
only entering double figures in the last quarter as
the Bloods won 42-26. Melissa McCauley played
almost a lone hand in the forward arc, shooting
34 of Melton’s 42 goals in a great performance,
with centre court Amy Conroy and coach Krista
Woodroffe, who entered the game after quartertime, dominating for the Bloods. Bridget Campbell
was a standout at wing defence for an impressive
Sebastopol side, with sisters Georgia and Adrianna
Cann performing well at opposite ends of the court.
The final match of the round saw Redan put a
significant obstacle in the way of Darley’s finals
hopes, with the Lions registering a 21 goal win
to enhance their own finals aspirations in the
process. Despite Erin Riley suffering an apparent
re-occurence of the elbow injury that kept her
out of action for the better part of the first half of
the season after scoring , the Lions were able to
increase their lead at every break on their way to
victory, with defender Anna Dawson, mid-court
player Cass Hobbs and teenage dynamo Ruby Parry
singled out for post-game praise by coach Kate
McMahon. Darley were best served by Demi Geary,
playing coach Olivia Aughton and Alix Edwards.
Time to cast an eye into the crystal ball once again,
and after tipping the card last weekend, BFNL
Media, Marketing & Events Manager Shaun Kelly is
bullish about his tipping ability this week!
The closest match of the round should be at
Wendouree Reserve this weekend, as Lake
Wendouree take on Bacchus Marsh in a game
where the winner will move a game clear inside
the top six. Whilst the Lakers will start favourites,
Bacchus Marsh improved immensely last weekend
after a few weeks of disappointing results, and
coach Frank Pawlowicz knows how important this
game is for his team’s finals chances. Having said
that, the Lakers have also shown improvement in the
last few weeks, and are my tip to take out this one in
a game that will go down to the wire.
Melton South return to the court this weekend,
hosting an in-form East Point. The Panthers season
has been punctuated by close calls, and one would
think that the more experienced East Point should
be too strong in this one, with the matchup between
teenage tyros Lauren Jew (East Point) and Monique
Clark (Melton South) in the Roos’ shooters arc worth
the price of admission alone
Redan come up against their toughest test to
date as they host North Ballarat City at Mars City
Oval. North City’s form has been shaky over the
last fortnight, whereas Redan have been in form,
and know that a win will go a long way towards
cementing a finals place with a nightmare finish
coming up. With the Lions sweating on Erin Riley’s
fitness, I’m going to plump for North City in another
close one.
Ballarat travel out to MacPherson Park on Sunday to
take on another in-form team in Melton, and whilst
the Bloods were challenged by Sebastopol last
week, they shouldn’t have too many worries against
the Swans this weekend.

Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation Round
THE AFL Goldfields Regional Administration
Centre, in conjunction with the Central Highlands
Football League, has announced this weekend’s
round of matches will be dedicated to Zaidee’s
Rainbow Foundation to assist with promoting
organ donation.
Zaidee Rose Alexander Turner, aged 7 years and
22 days, died suddenly on 2nd December 2004
from a burst blood vessel in her brain called a
Cerebral Aneurism. Zaidee’s parents, Kim and
Allan, founded Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation not
long after.
At the time of Zaidee’s death the Turner family had
been registered Organ and Tissue Donors for 5
years. As a result Zaidee donated her organs and
tissues at the Royal Children’s Hospital, as were
her wishes at the time.
Zaidee was the only child in Victoria under the
age of 16 years and we have been told one of
the youngest Australians to donate her organs
and tissues in 2004. She was only 1 of 6 children
nationally to donate their organs in 2004.
Zaidee’s Story is directed towards both children
and adults so they can think about others who are
waiting for a life saving operation and a suitable
match for an organ or tissue. Think about giving
this gift to others so they can live a better life and
in some cases, have a second chance at life.
Zaidee’s gift of her organs and tissues to others
will allow them to have another birthday. 1 in 5
people on the transplant waiting list will never get
the chance to have another birthday if people
do not become registered donors but more
importantly discuss this in their families.
The symbol is representative of hope; after every
storm the sun shines and there is a rainbow. For
those people on the transplant waiting list, the
rainbow symbol offers them hope. At the end of
their rainbow is an organ or tissue to improve their
life – or in most cases – save their life.
In 2004, the year Zaidee died, so too did 130,000
other Australians. Only 218 were organ donors.
In 2011, 140,000 Australians died but still only
337 where solid organ donors that 1001 people
Lexton’s Jordan Phelan (MCDFNL), Redan’s Ryan Waight and
Buninyong’s Jarrod Morgan (CHFL) come together to promote
Zaidee’s Rainbow Foundation.
benefited from. Still not enough donors to make
sure those on the waiting list get their much
needed transplant.
71% of Australians believe that their family
members’ know their wishes, yet only 56%
actually know the wishes of their family members.
This weekend, footballers across the Ballarat
Football Netball League, Maryborough &
Castlemaine District Football League and Central
Highlands Football League will receive and wear
Zaidee’s Rainbow Shoelaces in their football
matches - the BFNL in Senior, Reserve and
Under 18.5 fixtures, the Central Highlands FL in
all football fixtures and the MCDFNL in Senior
and Reserve matches. The football community
will reflect our support by wearing the laces and
help raise awareness of this fantastic foundation.
Representatives from each league, Ryan Waight
from Redan (BFNL), Jarrod Morgan from
Buninyong (CHFL) and Jordan Phelan (MCDFNL)
met at Saxon House on Tuesday 2nd July to help
promote what’s going to be a fantastic weekend.

Message from Worksafe AFL Victoria Country
THE best of AFL Victoria Country’s affiliated
leagues will be on display this Sunday in three
matches against the Victorian Amateur Football
Association.
As was the case in the 2011 when these
representative teams last played, three highclass games of football are expected.
When the Brian Molony Cup was last awarded
it was the VAFA who prevailed over AFL Victoria
Country No.1 in the premier match by six points,
while the country boys were big winners in the
Challenge Cup (AFL Victoria Country No.2 v
VAFA B – Div 4).
Sunday’s games mark 20 years that the two
competitions have met bi-annually at senior level.
Prior to that matches were played irregularly, with
U19 matches being played annually.
At U19 level, AFL Victoria Country (formerly the
VCFL) has triumphed in the past two encounters
with strong wins in 2011 and 2012.
With AFL recruiters now searching far and wide
to secure the best talent, players from all sides
have the chance to possibly take their footy to a
new level, just as Matt Taberner did last year.
After being named best on ground in the U19
match for the VCFL, Taberner, from Myrtleford,
was eventually selected by Fremantle in the NAB
AFL Rookie Draft and only a few weeks ago
made his debut at the elite level.
Other players to also have gone on to the AFL
from these matches include Sam Dunnel (Old
Melburnians/VAFA – St. Kilda), Ariel Steinberg
(Imperials/Sunraysia FNL/VCFL - Essendon)
and Daniel Nicholson (University Blues/VAFA –
Melbourne).
Regardless of who wins on Sunday,
representative matches are wonderful
opportunity for players to test their abilities at
higher standard and an experience that they will
remember long after their playing days are over.
WorkSafe AFL Victoria Country’s three sides
are selected after the WorkSafe Country
Championships, which were held in May and
saw 36 leagues compete.
After weekly training sessions and countless
selection headaches, WorkSafe AFL Victoria
Country coaches, Peter Knights (No.1 side) John
Cossar (No.2) and Damian Sexton (U19) have
settled on their final line ups.
The three matches wouldn’t be possible without
the many volunteers, including selectors and
support staff, who give up their time to help out.
WorkSafe and the sponsors of AFL Victoria No.2
(GrainCorp) and the U19s (EnergySafe) also play
a pivotal role in allowing the players to get a taste
of representative action.
Finally, the umpires from WorkSafe AFL Victoria
Country’s V/Line Academy should also be
congratulated for being selected to officiate
in the three matches. The V/Line Academy
was established to develop and coach
talented young umpires and this experience at
representative level will be an important step in
their on-going development.
May the best teams win.

Lake Wendouree Lakers Notes
What a great day for footy and netball it was
last week. The Eastern oval was a picture and
conditions were perfect. The unders again
were more than competitive and continue to
improve. Best players were Cookie, Rhino and
Jack Salau. The seconds were overpowered
again by a bigger and stronger team and
the usual suspects such as Joel Cant, Hugh,
Beauy and Struthy were prominent again.
Unfortunately they bear the brunt of the injuries
sustained and hopefully we can get a full list
on the park at some stage. Everyone stick
with Bird and get to training and it will come.
The seniors again had a slow start letting
East-Point kick the first 6 goals before they got
going, after the poor beginning they hooked
in and were at least competitive. Best players
were they consistent Tumma, Moth and
Haysey, Great to see young guns Pitto, Civva
and Eamon in the best.
30 | BFNL RECORD 2013
A most unusual day for the Lakers girls last
weekend were we couldn’t pinch at least one
win in the netball. The A grade suffered a
big loss of 20 goals, the B grade by a similar
margin. C grade and the under 18’s were
closer but all will need to improve if we meet
the Roo girls again.
This week we host Bacchus Marsh at the
Harcorts Oval and all will need to be at their
best to give the Cobras a run for their money.
Saturday night we have the annual ball and a
special congrats to Julie Maher, Josh Gilbert,
Ash Taylor and Isaac Kirby on their efforts so
we can all have a great night. Tickets are still
available, see one of those guys mentioned
or check out our great Facebook page, be
there or be square.
Go Lakers!
Bacchus Marsh Cobra Chatter
A tough game was expected from North City and
our boys provided a great contest. Some decision
making under pressure hurt us but we will improve with
experience, development and, as a young team, we
also need to reinforce the positives and for us there are
many. It’s hard to point out any one player, however
we welcomed back Trevor Hilton who just showed total
toughness in his conviction to get the ball and that was
just one of our highlights for our coaching staff. Best
were Daniel Velden, Tristan Simons, Matt Denham, Ryley
Stuhldreier, and Trevor Hilton.
For the U18’s taking on the league leaders was again
a big ask and they were beaten by a well-polished and
skilful North City side. Whilst under great pressure there
were times when our skills enabled us to create good
opportunities. To their credit the boys fought the game
right out.
In the Reserves the boys started slowly and trailed at
half time by six points. Although they were playing good
football we remained positive and kept working and the
effort paid off taking the lead at three quarter time by
ten points. The team were able to maintain the level of
intensity to keep pushing in front and kicked clear to
win by 26 points. This reinforced their ability to play out
a match - another sign that the boys are working to the
final siren with great strength shown across the entire
team. Mitch Suban and Chris Suban are in great form
with Alex Schwarzenberg, Ethan Tibbles, Matt Prince,
Ben Jenkins, Luke Vandermay, and Liam Noonan also
performing well.
The U18 netballers worked hard however where
outclassed and now have to have things go our way
to make finals. Best players Gabby Pino and Jaimee
Walsh. C Grade worked hard and bounced back after
a poor effort against Redan. The win was set up in the
first half with best players Loz, Ness, and Kaz. B Grade
had a poor first quarter and that was the difference in the
game. This week’s game is important to where we finish
at the end of the season. Best players Lorrae, Jenna,
and Tayler. In A Grade against a very good team our
girls played fantastically till early in the last quarter when
North City’s class shone out. Best players Stace, Katie, &
Liv. Go Cobras!
Thanks to the U16 boys who are stepping up to assist the
U18 team, you are certainly not out of place and you are
providing our club with a competitive side each week.
Best players were Matt Sutherland, Tom Wardell, Brenton
Payne, Jack Powell, Mitchell Gray, and Blayde Baker.

RED ONION CREATIVE BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE
Melton South Panther Proffering
On a weekend when the Panthers incurred their
second bye for the season the club held their
inaugural “HALL OF FAME” induction to coincide with
40 years of football in the navy blue and white.
The club way back in 1973 were known as the
“Southerners”,was formed by a group of loyal country
football followers on the front lawn of Mr.Finley
Samson’s house.
The Gala Dinner Dance was attended by nearly 300
past and present players, administrators, coaches,
trainers , netballers and supporters involved with the
club over the 40 years.
During the evening many old tales of events were told
that became somewhat exaggerated throughout the
night.
10 former players and 2 administrators were inducted
into the HALL OF FAME namely Phil Butcher
(deceased), David “Squeaky” Keenan, Matthew
Sproule, Brett Hickey, Darko Dobrovsak, Darren
Stanley, Jarod Reardon, Steve Gallop, Paul Rodda
and Matthew Sutton.
Finley Samson along with the current MSFNC
President Peter Earl were the administrators inducted.
34 | BFNL RECORD 2013
The evening was hailed a huge success by all in
attendance and special mention must go to the
sub-committee of Teegan Laffin, Vicky Sutton,Kath
Cristofaro and Adrianne Dransman for their excellent
preparation and presentation of the nights events
along with the nights MC Shaun Kelly from the BFNL
who was a buzz of enthusiasm.
Back to todays football against East Point and the
highlight will surely be the two opposing forwards in
Dan Jordon of the visitors who is currently heading the
BFL goalkickers on 55 goals up one end and Matthew
Sutton up the other.
Word early in the week was that “Sutts’ may line-up
in defence in an attempt to keep Jordan “goalless”.goodluck.
In the reserves East are well on top of the ladder and
the U’18 should be a hanger.
Next week is “Sponsors Day” with guest speaker
North Melbourne legend Mr.David Dench and don’t
forget tomorrow in the rooms at midday the “Last Man
Standing” draw. Tickets from Dracca after the game
today at $50 each.

RED ONION CREATIVE BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE
Redan Lion’s Den
We welcome North Ballarat City to Mars City
Oval today for what’s going to be a tough day at
the office for all of our sides given the form North
City are in at the moment in both football and
netball.
A gallant effort by our Seniors last Sunday to lead
at three-quarter time after a slow start against
Darley, unfortunately we couldn’t go on with it
to lose by 21 points with Peacey, Horbury and
Hyden our better few.
The Reserves found the going tough against a
good Darley side, with inaccurate goalkicking not
helping the cause as we slumped to a 44 point
defeat with Gercovich, Matt Miller & Liam Hunter
standouts.
A different story for the Under 18.5’s though who,
despite bad kicking (goalkicking drills at training
this week?) got the job done against Darley by
43 points, with Brandon Green booting four and
great games from Lachie Lamb and Dylan Page
40 | BFNL RECORD 2013
The story of the week this week is our netballers
though, who came away from Darley with a clean
sweep of all four grades - well done girls!!
Congrats to two former Redan boys on AFL
milestones last weekend, with Shaun Grigg
playing his 100th game and Isaac Smith his 50th
game over the past weekend - the club is very
proud of you!
Congrats also to Ryan Waight, who takes to
the field for Victoria Country tomorrow in their
game against the Ammos - show them your stuff
Waighty!!!
Don’t forget our Trots night coming up on July
24th either - this should be one of the highlights
of the social calendar this season. $35 gets you
in, a racebook and a three course meal. Race
sponsorships are also available for only $300,
with all proceeds coming back to the club.
Contact Marita Schiltz by e-mail at
[email protected] for bookings.
North Ballarat City
Good results in both football and netball last
weekend. The senior football backed up
from the previous win against Sunbury with a
solid performance against a much improved
Bacchus Marsh.
Congratulations to Sam Willian on his debut
senior match. Thanks also to our 1982/83
premiership coach in Dizzy Lynch who
presented Sam with his jumper. Our reserves
battled hard to stay in the game under
difficult circumstances and the under 18.5
kept on their winning way. Thanks to the
under 16.5 boys for making the trip down and
then having to front again the next day.
Our A grade netballers returned to the
winning list as did the B grade. Unfortunately
the C grade could not get across the line but
the under 18.5 took out the honours in fine
fashion.
Another reminder about the annual ball on
Saturday, 13 July 2013 at the North Ballarat
Social Club. Tickets are available now at
$40.00 per person. See Chris Rowan or
purchase from reception at the Sports Club.
We urge everyone to attend this event as it
always a highlight of our year.
Black and White night tickets are still
available and can be purchased from David
Linane. This function is to be held at the
Invermay Hall. This event is a major fund
raiser for the club. In order for the club to
continue to be viable, we need everyone to
support it. Please remember that all of these
functions are being organised by volunteer
staff so please help them by supporting it.
Don’t forget to visit Peaches Fruit Market
at their new store at 12 Coronet Street,
Wendouree. Football Club members receive
10% discount on presentation of their card.

RED ONION CREATIVE BALLARAT FOOTBALL NETBALL LEAGUE
Melton Bloods Banter
Last week’s performance was a cracker against
Sebastapol. No matter that the game was between the
two bottom sides, it was a match worthy of September
action and both club’s can be proud of their efforts.
If fact all grades did extremely well in Football and
Netball and the Bloods took home all points for the
day. Habes kicked a bagful in a welcome return to
form and Ash Webber booted seven to take the lead in
the BFL Reserves goal kicking ladder.
We are home again this week - two weeks in a row.
Thankfully the weather has been kind to us and the
ground has had a chance to recover. I really don’t
know what happened to the home and away system
that sufficed in local football for so long but anyway
here we are, ready and raring to take on the Ballarat
Swans.
We had a good turnout for Sponsors day and the
invited gueats were treated to an entertaining talk by
Ted Whitten Jnr. Ted spoke on his father’s exploits
and what it was like growing up with a champion for a
father. A more serious note was his current work on the
E.J Whitten Foundation spreading awareness on men’s
health (prostate cancer in particular). Fundraising at
the luncheon collected over $900 for the Foundation
44 | BFNL RECORD 2013
to help them continue on their vital work. Well done to
all concerned.
Once more the call goes out to our supporters to
assist with some of the essential work at the club. In
particular, timekeepers and interchange stewards
are needed for every match. Team Managers and
Committee people have enough to do through the
week and on match day without having to chase up
helpers or do the jobs themselves. Also we need other
volunteers to fill such roles as BFL Tribunal Delegate,
Match Review Panel Delegate and Player Advocacy;
we really need two advocates as our regular person is
not always available. Training is available and the club
is quite prepared to recompense for travel expenses.
A lot of folk around the club have been critical of
what they see as unfair treatment being afforded our
players. The challenge is here; if you don’t like it, do
something about it. Chasing up someone to represent
one of our players the day before a hearing is not fun.
Mid Year Ball money is now due so pay up now to
secure your spot.
Sponsors of the week are A J Williams Plumbing and
Webber Constructions. Support your local businesses
as they support your club. GO BLOODS 2013!
Ballarat Swans Chatter
The first three quarters provided a closely contested
game of football but unfortunately ended very
disappointing for the Simonds Swans. A nine goal
last quarter put pay to any aspirations of winning the
match. The Simonds Swans Reserves again went
down in a close game. They can’t seem to get over
the line in the close ones. The U/18.5s are back on
the winning list with a strong win which sees them
sitting in third place on the ladder.
The Simonds Swans Netballers came away with
two wins and a draw. The seniors tried hard all day
but were not good enough for their more fancied
opponents. ‘B’ Grade went down by the smallest
of margins, ‘C’ grade slogged out a draw and the
U/18.5 continued their winning way.
Today we travel down the Highway to McPherson
Park to take on the Melton FNC. Both Clubs will be
looking to get on the winning list in their respective
football and netball matches.

BFUA Report Liam Brady
LAST week, BFUA Umpire Samuel Burns travelled to
Cairns with the BFL U/16 Football side. Samuel was
selected as the BFUA umpire to travel with the team
and officiate in the matches which the team played
while up North. Sam represented the BFUA with
distinction and well done to all the BFNL Staff and
officials who made this trip a success.
After discussions between the BFUA and the Riddell
District Umpires Association, on July 20th, the BFUA
and the Riddell Umpires will umpire together in
selected games in the Ballarat FNL. The opportunity
to work together is beneficial to both umpiring groups
and this initiative will improve consistency with
umpiring and strengthen the relationship between the
two umpiring groups.
If there are any past or present BFUA members that
have not yet received their invitation to the Centenary
Celebrations, please contact Daryl Biggin. Darryl and
his organising committee have been endeavouring to
get in contact with all past and present members.
To book tickets to any of the 100 Year Celebration
events or to order merchandise, please contact Daryl
Biggin on 0435 365 731.
Umpire Related Issues – If any club has an umpire
related issue that they would like to discuss with the
BFUA in 2013, could you please email Liam Brady at
[email protected].
Each issue will be dealt with accordingly and passed
onto the appropriate people within the BFUA. It
is important that if a club does have something to
discuss with the BFUA, the issue is presented to the
BFUA through the right channels within your club.
EG/From club official such as club President/Junior
Coordinator or Senior Coach.
The BFUA are always encouraging any new and old
members to become involved in the Association.
If you are interested in getting involved, please don’t
hesitate to contact Liam Brady at the Ballarat Football
Umpires Association on 53 331 977 or simply come
down to training at the City Oval on Wednesday night.
If you are from outside the Ballarat region, please
contact Liam to obtain correct venue and training start
times.

The 2013 Courier Player of the Year Award
DUAL Henderson Medallist Jason McNamara has shot to the lead in The Courier player of the year award.
The North Ballarat City captain polled another five votes in a clear best on ground performance against Bacchus Marsh on
Saturday, awarded the maximum five votes to take his streak to 13 votes in the last three games, totalling 24 votes.
Darley star Jake Edwards received three votes for his effort against Redan on Sunday, meaning he has polled in seven of of
