Tampere
Film Festival
heading east!
Alongside the International, Finnish and
LAB1O competitions the Tampere Film Festival goes on an extensive East tour in March.
The first stop is right next-door at Russia, then
the ride swings by Middle East, and finally the
journey takes us to the Far East to marvel at
the glow of Korean gems.
The Palestine and Neighbours program
features five screenings of recent short films, which highlight
the extremely sensitive political situation in Palestine, with special
eciial
al
focus on women filmmakers such as Alia Arasoughly and Najwa
ajw

Najjar. Majority of these films is made by Palestinians, but the
neighbouring countries get their say as well.
South Korean short filmmaking is inspected in four
screenings within an entity named Korean Glow. Six Lives of
Woman, Life Hurts,
Men’s World and

The Sponsored Films program features a wide
range of films created after commission by different
enterprises, institutions and industries. Among others, the
program includes a compilation of the legendary Shell
Film Unit’s production, works of Roy Andersson,
the eccentric of Swedish cinema, and French

hin the program Canon of Short Film. This year the canon will
be centred on train-themed films.
Keeping to traditions, the festival features an interesting
variety of music related films including new documentaries
diving into the subcultures of electronic music and Finnish
punk scene. Buster Keaton’s hilarious silent classic, The General
(1927), will be accompanied by a Finnish electro-garage group
named Black Audio.
The spectacular Suomi Night casts a glance on the
mental landscape of Finns. The long night includes screenings
of several short films and at the same time shameful and
amusing snapshots of Finnish artists performing in the
Eurovision song contest, not to forget live music. FESTART08
exhibition brings into light Finnish and foreign media art with
such artists as Ken Jacobs, John Smith and William Wegman.
