Dear People of Saint Anne,
I write to you this weekend with a fullness of heart. I have
now been among you close to two months. In that short time,
I am already feeling right at home in this Community of Faith.
I hope it is mutual. I must tell you that I am rather surprised. I
came here after my time at Saint Raymond, expecting that it
would be a challenging transition for me personally.
I need to thank you for your gracious welcome to me over
these last weeks. Every weekend, I am so touched and grateful, as you choose to make that extra time before and after
weekend liturgy to shake my hand, introduce yourselves and
welcome me to St. Anne. Know that those simple gestures of
welcome and hospitality mean the world to me, as a new
member of your faith community and as someone who is in
the process of becoming your new pastor.
I want to express my gratitude to a number of parishioners
who have e-mailed their thoughts to me or who have set a
time to visit with me so that I could listen to their unique perspective and observations regarding the place of this faith
community in their lives. I am taking copious notes.
I am also very appreciative to a number of our parish families,
who have taken the extra risk and step to invite me into their
homes to share a dinner. I have truly enjoyed getting to know
you and your children, while hearing about your hopes and
concerns regarding Saint Anne, all grounded in such deep
love and commitment to this parish community.
Parish Listening Sessions: I know well that before a new
pastor was appointed to Saint Anne, the Priest's Placement
Board met with you, as a parish community, to create a profile
of the type of gifts, attributes, skills and abilities that you would
hope and expect to have in the new pastor who would succeed Father Jack after his twenty years of guidance and shepherd leadership here at Saint Anne.
A few parishioners, in their direct communication to me and in
indirect communication that has come my way, have expressed some of their concerns that they did not receive the
person that they had hoped for as their new pastor.
Trust me when I say that I understand and accept your observations and feedback regarding the new pastor placement
process of the Archdiocese. I have been around the block as
a pastor and as a dean for awhile. These are challenging
times in pastor and priest placement. All I can say, in re-
sponse, is that I promise to give you my all and hope that any
upset or disappointment that may be in the hearts of some,
that over time, we can move forward as a unified community
rooted in the Gospel of Christ Jesus. Please keep your honest comments and thoughts flowing in the written or e-mailed
word. Honesty is the best policy.
That being said, I would suggest that a pastor does not make
up or create the identity of a parish community. It is the People of God, that is made up of parish leadership, the core parish staff and the faith community at large, along with the pastor, who in a communion of dialogue, collaboration and discernment — chart the course of the future for any given parish
community.
Therefore, as I shared in one of my first letters to you, I invite
you, strongly encourage and gently challenge you, to make
the time to be a part of one of the two listening sessions
that will be held on Wednesday, October 7th, from 1:00 —
2:30 p.m., and on Thursday, October 8th, from 7:30 — 9:00
p.m., in the Church. These listening sessions are being designed with a structure and an intent as to how we here at
Saint Anne can take stock of where we are as a parish, commit ourselves to continue in the growing and engaged, welcoming and dynamic faith community and where we want to
be in the next five to ten years of our journey in faith as a parish community. There will be more about these two upcoming listening sessions in the weeks to come ...
A good read if you are interested: I would recommend the
book, "God is Back" authored by John Micklethwait and Adrian
Woolridge, subtitled: How the Global Revival of Faith is
Changing the World. Published by the Penguin Press 2009,
the insert cover reads in the following way: Since the enlightenment, intellectuals have assumed that modernization would
kill religion, and that a religious America would be an oddity.
However, "God is Back" argues that religion and modernity
can thrive together, and that America's approach to faith is
becoming the norm worldwide ... the authors believe, that
America's unique religious style can be applied around the
globe to channel the rising tide of faith away from volatility and
violence.
I am half way through "God Is Back" and I am finding it a
rather fascinating and thought provoking read.

Finance Notes
Another generous parish family donated $10,000.00
towards our Sunday offering this week. We could not
have made budget without them, but more importantly,
it shows a wonderful commitment to the well being of
this parish. On behalf of the parish community, we
thank you.
The other exciting news was the count of the parish
envelopes last week. For the first time this fiscal year,
we had over 500 envelopes used. It is really uplifting to
see the church fill up on Sunday mornings, and in the
coming months, we look forward to seeing even more of
you as the summer comes to an end and the fall begins.
You will notice at the bottom of the finance report, we
are showing the amount due on the Building and Operating Loans. Since we make payments on these loans
only one time per month, we will continue to give you
this figure once a month until the loans are paid out.

Thank you to all the donors who contributed to our blood
drive. It was our best ever. Fifty units of blood were contributed. This included four people who, by using the ALYX
technique, were able to donate two units of cells without losing the corresponding blood volume.
Each donation strengthens the lives of three people, not to
mention the joy in the heart of the donor. These blood
drives have become a necessity. The blood supply in our
area is consistently low because donations have fallen behind our usage rate. Fortunately, the St. Anne donor base
is increasing as more people realize that this is an important
contribution that they can make to the life of someone who
cannot help him or herself. To address this ongoing situation, we are scheduling donations four times a year, in February, May, August and November. Our next date is Sunday, November 15th.
Thanks again to the donors who ensure that there will be a
safe and adequate supply of blood when it is needed. For
those who donate at a Life Source Blood Center, please use
code A212 to designate St. Anne.

LaFarge Lifelong Learning
Inspiration Through Continuing Education
Presented by the St. Anne Catholic Community
Adults 50 years and better are invited 'back to class' this fall to pursue new interests through St.
Anne's LaFarge Lifelong Learning Program. Courses meet once per week for six weeks and are
held in the St. Anne Senior Center. Instruction is paced to the individual needs of each participant to
ensure an enjoyable and rewarding learning experience for all.
Registration will be held Tuesday, September 8th through Thursday, September 10th,
from 9:00 a.m. — 11:00 a.m. in the Parish Center.
Classes start the week of September 14th.

Please consider volunteering your time and talents to the St. Anne Women's Club. Indicate your areas of

I CHURCH + COMMUNITY AFFAIRS
A. Church Women United (CWU): An ecumenical group of women from the surrounding area who plan three
prayer services annually to promote world peace and understanding.
I would like to attend the prayer services.
B. Women's Scripture Sharing Group (WSSG): Women who meet weekly during the school year to study
the Word of God. Babysitting provided for a nominal fee.
I would like to participate.
C. Funeral Luncheon Ministry: Volunteers help those who experience the loss of a loved one, i.e., supervise the
event, help serve, prepare food/salad or dessert.
I will donate a salad or dessert.
D. FISH (For I Shall Help): Service is one day per month. Volunteers help those in need of transportation
(i.e. doctor appointments) by driving or taking telephone calls.
I would like to become a FISH volunteer.
E. Senior Luncheon: Luncheon and entertainment provided for senior citizens.

Retreat and Prayer Opportunities:
F. Retreat: A retreat to help women further their spiritual journey.

any new candidate who is entering the Confirmation preparation process in the fall of 2009

grade year to begin the process). Those who

need not attend.

KNITTING MINISTRY
The St. Anne Knitting Ministry meets on the
2nd Monday of the month, in the upstairs conference room of the Parish Center, from 1:003:00 p.m. If you like to knit or crochet for the
purpose of sharing the final craft with others
needing comfort, please join us. All levels of
knitters are welcome. Please bring your own
yarn and needles. We try to supply help
if needed to get started on shawls, lap blankets or baby items. Patterns, blessings and
companionship are what we have to offer before finished items are passed on to individuals
by request or to hospitals and nursing homes.

WOMEN'S DAYTIME BRIDGE
The bridge group is looking for players for the
2009-2010 season on the third Thursday of
the month, September through April, with play

WOMEN'S SCRIPTURE STUDY
All women of the parish are invited to join a 9
week scripture study of Second Corinthians,
beginning Monday, September 21st, from

commentary book from our 2008 First Corinthians Study or $25.00 for the entire study set.

the book. Over an hour of our time together

music will be Rory as well as some of our cantors, a string quartet, trumpet, and flute. It is
an enjoyable and indispensable opportunity to
prepare for the wedding ceremony.

KIDCHOIR
It's time to get KidChoir going again! Kids, be part of the fun and important work of praising God
in the Mass by being a part of the KidChoir for 2009-10. KidChoir is open to children in the 2nd
grade and older. Junior high age children are encouraged to either be in KidChoir or the Teen
Choir that sings at the Sunday 5:15 p.m. evening Masses.
Rehearsals for KidChoir are on Tuesdays, from 6:00 until 6:45 p.m. in the Parish Center conference room. Generally, the KidChoir sings for the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the first Sunday of every
month (October 4th, November 1st, December 6th) and at special times like Thanksgiving (9:00
a.m.) and Christmas Eve (2:30 p.m., as of this writing). If your children are interested in singing,
please bring them to rehearsals. The schedule of rehearsals for the rest of this year is as follows:

GOD HAS HEARD US

I read an article the other day that really got me thinking about gratitude. There is a psalm (Psalm 138) that
goes like this: "I will give thanks to you, 0 Lord, with all
my heart, for you have heard the words of my mouth."
Of course, we are told over and over again that we must
ask the Lord for help, but the psalmist tells us how to
ask. Begin with gratitude, he says.
Begin with gratitude, knowing that our prayers have
already been heard. There is a strong element of faith in
being able to thank God for the answers to our prayers
before we get to see them, and yet all the great mystics,
from the psalmists on down, have taught us to pray with
gratitude. God hears our prayers; we do not have to
keep on begging. We only have to ask and then begin
thanking.
The author of the article states that "Gratitude is the
most transforming power on the face of the earth." To
illustrate this, she suggests that we consider this situation. We wake up one morning to the sound of driving
rain. Immediately, we are besieged with thoughts of
snarled traffic, prolonged commutes, wet children's clothing and boots, even a wet smelly dog. The day is already halfway down the tubes, and we are not yet out of
bed.
But, she says, if we have been experiencing a tremendous drought, our thoughts are completely different. We
are filled with gratitude for the rain, for the farmers' crops
that might still be salvaged, and the reservoirs that will be
replenished. Yes, traffic will still be a problem, the dog is
still going to be smelly, but life seems wonderful. Nothing has really changed except our attitude. Gratitude
has transformed our day.
Remember: when we pray with gratitude, this attitude
transforms our prayer and opens us up to the answers
God may be sending our way. Perhaps we should try
asking God simply for whatever we need, then thank
God immediately, knowing that even if we haven't seen
the answer yet, God has heard us. Maybe we should try
thanking God for the answers we cannot yet see! God
has heard us!

RELIGIOUS LANGUAGE AS ICON

Before Henri Nouwen wrote the book that became his signature work, "Return of the Prodigal Son," he went to The Hermitage museum in Russia and sat for whole days contemplating Rembrandt's famous painting on the return of the prodigal
son. He was given permission to bring a chair into the museum and he would sit for hours, studying the painting from
various angles and letting it speak to him in his varying
moods. The result was one of the finest commentaries ever
written on both Rembrandt's painting and on the meaning of
that famous parable in the gospels.
What Henri Nouwen did with Rembrandt's painting is what we
need to do with a lot of the classical language of scripture, the
creeds, and dogma. The language there is more iconic than
literal, more the language of metaphor than of ordinary life,
deep image rather than video-taped history. This doesn't
mean that it isn't true or that it's "Alice-in-Wonderland" mythology. It is deeply true, so true that we hang our very lives
on its truth. But it is meant to be studied, contemplated,
meditated, knelt-before and prayed-with, rather than taken
literally.
Allow me an example: Consider the language and image surrounding the death of Jesus as paying the price for our sins.
Scripture, our creeds, and our Christian tradition have a certain language around this. Among other things, we say: "He
paid the price for our sins. We are saved by his blood. He
paid the debt of sin. We are washed clean in his blood, the
blood of the lamb. He is the Lamb of God who takes away
our sins. He restored us to life, after our death in Adam's sin.
He conquered death, once and for all. By his stripes, we
were healed. He offered an eternal sacrifice to God. He is
our victim. He opened the gates of heaven. He stripped the
principalities and Satan of their power. He descended into
hell."
Accepting the truth of this language is one thing, explaining in
within the categories and language of ordinary life is something else. About Jesus' death, we have a language but we
don't have a vocabulary. We know its meaning, but we can
never adequately explain it.
What exactly do we mean by these statements? How does
Jesus' death save me from being accountable for my sins?
How does his death vicariously substitute for human shortcoming, including our own, through the centuries? Why does
God need someone to suffer that agonizingly in order to forgive me? How does Jesus' death open the gates of heaven?

Why had they been closed? What does it mean that, in his
death, Jesus descended into hell?
Literal explanations come up short here. The words are more
like an icon, an artifact that highlights form to bring out essence. The language of scripture, the creeds, and our dogmas put us in touch with something that we can know but
struggle to conceptualize and explain. It is meant to be
grasped at levels beyond the just the intellect. It is a language to be contemplated and knelt-before more than a language to be understood literally.
Some years ago, Time magazine did a cover story on the
death of Jesus. Among other things, they interviewed various
people and asked them how they understood the blood of
Jesus as washing them clean. One of those interviewed was
JoAnne Terrell, the author of "Power in the Blood? The
Cross in the African American Experience." For her, the
question of how Jesus' blood saves us triggered a deep personal search. Sitting in a seminary classroom and studying
the death of Jesus, she began having flashbacks: As a young
girl, she had seen her mother murdered by a boyfriend. She
vividly recalled the blood-soaked mattress and her mother's
bloody fingerprints on the wall. And so her search was very
much a search "to find the connection between my mom's
story and my story and Jesus' story."
For her, the language around the death of Jesus, its blood
and heartbreak, became an icon to be contemplated for
meaning. Like Henri Nouwen, she began moving her chair
around to look at it from various angles and to see how it
spoke to her in her life-situation, to the blood in her own history. The language of redemptive blood gave meaning and
dignity to her mother's blood.
We cheat ourselves of meaning whenever we treat scripture,
the creeds, and the dogmas of our faith as simple statements
of history, newspaper accounts in literal language. They
have a historicity and they are true, but the language surrounding them is not the language of the daily newspaper.
They are anchored in history and we risk our very lives on
their truth, but they speak to us more as does an icon than as
does yesterday's newspaper. Their language is meant to be
contemplated, knelt-before, and absorbed in the heart as we
experience more and more of life's mysteries.
An atheist, someone once quipped, is just another name for
someone who doesn't grasp metaphor.

Geography is again a key to Mark's theological intent.
Last week, the setting was at Gennesaret in the western or Jewish side of the Sea of Galilee. There, Jesus
bests the challenge of the Judean (Jewish)
"establishment"' about ritual impurity." (Although the
Sunday Lectionarym does not use the bible text at
7:24, note that there Mark has Jesus travel to the district of Tyre, which is Gentile (pagan) territory. There,
after a clever exchange of challenge and response,
Jesus yields to the Gentile woman's plea to cure her
daughter.)"
In today's passage, Mark tells his audience" that Jesus
leaves that land of Gentile culture to cross to the east
side of the Jordan River and enter the region of the
Decapolis,"' which is even deeper into the area of pagan culture. Here Jesus heals a deaf and mute man,
right in the midst of very heavy Greek influence of language, culture, religion and customs. By choosing this
combination of pericopes"" from James and Mark, the
Lectionary authors show Jesus "defining" the God to
which the Hebrew scriptures refers this Sunday." In
this setting in Mark's chapter 7, this God who will
come to save, the one who will open the eyes of the
blind and the ears of the deaf, loosen the tongue of
the speechless, and make the lame leap, is the God
not only of the Jew, the Chosen People, but the God
of the gentiles as wellr Jesus proclaims it very clearly
in the cultural context of his audience and later, Mark
traces it clearly in the cultural context of his own corn-
munity: this God is the God of inclusion. Even the
hated Gentiles are welcome! Little wonder that many
are outraged or that many leadersx feel threatened
and want to dishonor or even kill Jesus. This explanation, given by Mark to his audience sometime
around the time of the destruction of the Temple in 70
CE, probably served to further assure the former gentiles in his Christian community that they were indeed
included in the kingdom. It emphasized as well to the
Jewish Christians that they were to embrace those
who once were considered outsiders.
Once again, an evangelist underscores that Jesus is
counter-cultural. In a society rigidly structured by traditions that maintained hard, impenetrable boundaries,
Jesus declares that in God's society there are no
boundaries, no insiders and outsiders by reason of
birth, lineage, or circumstance. The Lectionary authors aptly chose James for the Second Reading to
decry the use of favoritism based on externals rather
than the heart; m James polarizes it: Has not God chosen the poor . . . to be heirs of the kingdom that he has
promised to those who love him?
It is easy to remain with the story of the healing in this
gospel pericope. Yet the intent of the Lectionary authors in selecting the three other scriptures seems to
integrate well with Mark's message. Despite the cultural bias that Mark's first audience has when they
hear the text, Mark is quite clear: there is no one automatically outside because of station in life.
All this scripture, all the explanation: So What??
In what ways does our society condition the way we act? For example, through what
lens do we view the current hot button debate: Our health policy?
What do we mean when we sing the refrain for today's psalm as a response to its
verses (see Psalm 146, above)?

We believe that the celebration of the
sacraments ranks among the most
important gifts that we have. We look
forward to sharing these celebrations with
those who, in some way, are part of our
community. Therefore, please note the
following:
Baptism: Registration in the parish is a
prerequisite. For those parents who are
baptizing their first child, please allow 2 to 3
months in order to attend 2 required
Baptism sessions before setting the
Baptism date. For a subsequent child's
baptism, an interview session must be
scheduled prior to setting the date. All
schedules are done in the parish office.

Marriage:
A child of a registered
parishioner or a registered and active
parishioner must schedule an interview with
a parish staff person to set a date and start
the marriage process. Please call

First Eucharist and First Reconciliation:
These sacraments are celebrated in the
second grade. Candidates must complete
the required preparation program. Please
call the REP office at 847.620.3068.
Confirmation:
This sacrament is
celebrated in high school. Candidates
must be registered parishioners and
complete the required preparation program.
Please call 847.620.3072.
Reconciliation: Saturdays 9:15 - 10:00
a.m. and by appointment.
Registration: Please do not assume you are
registered if you have been attending Mass here
or have children in St. Anne School or our REP
program. Registration includes meeting with one
of our welcoming team members and filling out
an official form for our parish records. To
