Dear Friends and Supporters of GiveLight:
Welcome to GiveLight’s First Annual Fundraiser.
We hope you will enjoy the program and be inspired to participate in any
capacity you can.
It is with distinct pleasure that we are officially announcing our plan to
build a second orphanage for the children affected by the earthquake of
Pakistan/Kashmir.
By the grace of God, we completed our orphanage in Aceh, Indonesia, within
seven months. We will use that as a model and reapply the same basic principles
in Pakistan as follows:
• House and educate 50 orphans in our orphanage in the initial stage.
• Enroll the children in local public schools.
• Provide complementary education consisting of Computer Skills, English,
and Arabic/Quranic study.
Building off of our program in Aceh, we will begin sponsoring orphans
immediately at a cost of $30/month.
Please join us in making this dream a reality. As our first project demonstrates,
with the right intent, prayers and hard work, the world will come together to
help us achieve this goal.
Thank you for being here and for opening your heart.
May the blessings of God be upon you and your family.

“We feed for the sake of God alone: No reward do we desire of you nor thanks.”

Reflection
 Letters
Fro m O u r O r ph a n s
“My name is Rahmat Miko . I live in the Noordeen orphanage, Takengon,
central Aceh. I go to school in SMP Negeri I /Middle School #1. Recently I’m
the top ten honor role student in my school. My goal is to be fluent in English.
I really wish I could speak and understand English well, right now I don’t know
how. I promise myself to learn English diligently, so I can go to America.
I will always learn and work hard to achieve my dream. When I grow up I
want to be a pilot, so I can fly away and visit places. Sometimes I felt sad, when I
see other kids biking. I wanted a bike, but I know that I do not have parents
anymore, to ask for one.”
Rahmat Miko
“I have a lot of friends, it makes me feel really happy. Originally I came from
Meulaboh, after the tsunami I live here in Central Aceh. This is the place
where I will rebuild my life. My day starts at 5 am, after dawn prayer I took a
bath, dressed, then have breakfast. Takengon Middle School #3 is where I go to
study until 2 pm. I always feel exhausted afterwards! My name is Firnalis.
I dream to go to America.
Indeed, if I remember the tragedy that befalls me I feel really sad. My tears run
down every time I realize that now I’m alone, everybody perished. I survived
and I try to be strong. Everything that came from God would eventually return
to Him.
When I grow up I want to be a singer, or an English teacher, who goes back
and forth from America to Indonesia.
Here, surrounding this orphanage, the beauty of the hills and the lake always
fill me. I want to reach for the stars. Friendship and companionship is very
important to me , I want to help other people in need.”
“Armia, is my name. I feel grateful to God
who has blessed Mrs. Alyan with ease to
help me back to school. I really feel
welcomed and loved in this orphanage.
I’m busy with school and other activities
after school. All the staff here are very
kind and nice to all of us. They helped us
with our new life here, far from our
relatives. I do not know how to repay all
your kindness, only to God I pray that
He will reward you. May you always have
strength and good health. Once more I would like to thank you and all your
friends and family for making this happen.”
Armia
“My name is Nursamawi, I would like to thank God and the Noordeen family
for accepting me. I could not replace or repay your kindness, I can only pray
that He will reward you and gives you health and strength.
My impressions so far are:
This orphanage helps me restore my faith and believes.
It also helps me to feel the sense of brotherhood with my fellow orphans.
Strengthen my intention to study harder than before, and achieve success just
like you! You are my role model.
I pray that one day we will have a chance to meet face to face, if you have time to
visit us here. Again, thank you and really appreciate it for everything.”

imam zaid shakir and
sr saliha shaikir
Dian was born in Takengon Central Aceh and spent her first 15 years there
until she finished Junior High School. Although she moved from Aceh at a
young age to pursue better education, she returned home every year to visit
her parents and extended family who are still living in Aceh.
Imam Zaid Shakir is amongst the most respected and influential Muslim
scholars in the West. Born in Berkeley, California, the second of seven children
he accepted Islam in 1977 while serving in the United States Air Force. He then
obtained a BA sigma cum laude in International Relations at American University in Washington D.C. and later earned his MA in Political Science at Rutgers
University, where he emerged as an active leader in campus activities. For seven
years in Syria and briefly in Morocco he immersed himself in an intense study
of Arabic, Islamic law, Quranic studies, and Islamic spirituality with some of the
top Muslim scholars of our age. In 2001, he graduated from Syria’s prestigious
Abu Noor University and returned to Connecticut to continue his work with
the Muslim community in America. Teaching regularly as the Imam of Masjid
al-Islam, writing numerous articles for various magazines, journals, and newspapers, and lecturing frequently at many of America’s largest Muslim conferences
and conventions, he soon emerged as one of the most popular and sought after
American Muslim leaders. In 2003, he moved to Hayward, California with his
family to serve as a scholar-in-residence and lecturer at Zaytuna Institute where
he now teaches regular courses. He has since lectured at many of the Bay Area’s
top universities, including Stanford and U.C. Berkeley, and is a frequent speaker
at local Muslim events. His latest work in 2005 is entitled, “Scattered Pictures:
Reflections of An American Muslim”.
Due to her consistent high marks she was able to enter one of the most prestigious Universities in Indonesia and graduated as an Engineer with a focus in
Agriculture. She joined Procter & Gamble Indonesia in Brand Management
right after graduation. After working for less than 2 years, she was offered an
assignment in P&G USA where she handled many of its global brands. In the
course of 7 years, she worked with some of the most brilliant minds in Marketing in the US and Indonesia and she hopes to apply what she learned in P&G
to grow the GiveLight Foundation into a world class institution.
Dian loves to read and travel. She’s fortunate to have traveled to 47 States, and
visited 4 continents. She enjoys cooking, connecting with people and learning
languages of the world.
Dian lost 40 of her relatives in the December tsunami and she is determined
to rebuild Aceh by saving as many of its orphans as possible. When she is not
busy building the Foundation, she is raising two young children of her own,
Adnan,3 and Zam Zam, 2.
On November 18th, 2005 Dian Alyan received the “Woman Of The Year”
award for the city of Sunnyvale as a tribute to her stellar record of leadership
in the local community. The award was presented by the Honorable Elaine K.
Alquist, 13th senatorial district.
Saliha Shakir was born in Manhattan N.Y. , and became Muslim in 1977
while serving in the US Air Force. She received a BA in Urban Planning and
a minor in Elementary Education from Rutgers University. She went to Syria
and Morocco to study Arabic, Qur’an, and Islamic spirituality for seven years,
where she completed the certificate program at the University of Abi Nur’s
Institute of International Students. In 2001, she returned to the US and taught
classes on the roles of women and family according to Islamic Prophetic tradtion,
and engaged as a volunteer social worker in the community. In 2003, she moved
to Hayward, California with her husband and son. Currently serves as the
Operations Manager for New Islamic Directions, an online family company.

Organic Light Photography
20” x 30” original phototgraphy by local artist Youssef Ismail. Mounted and
framed 28” x 38”, titled “Sentinals of the Sun.” Silent and stoic these ancient
Monterey Pines stand guard on the cliffs of he Big Sur coast. They are among some of the
first living things that feel the brunt of the torrential rains and howling winds of storms that
come off the Pacific as they move onto land. Likewise, they are among the last living things
that witness the setting of the sun. Day after day, in the company of others or not, they see
the sun off, quietly and with out boast. They are the hallmark of sincerity with neither
complaint as they carry out theirtasks nor seeking praise. How stoic we could be if we only
could achieve the likes of their station. For were we not given the station of sentinels of this
world?
