Getting Started
At Perimeter Institute, we strive to provide our visitors with all the information
and tools they need to make their visit as comfortable and productive as
possible. Our Visitor Services team and other administrative staff will provide
you with a comprehensive PI orientation and make sure you have everything
you need to get started.

5 Location
31 Caroline St.
Perimeter Institute’s main building is a four-storey facility located at 31 Caroline Street. The first floor is dedicated
to common areas such as the Reflecting Lounge, fitness areas, library, and lecture theatre. The second floor
houses administrative offices (including Visitor Services) on the south side, and research offices on the north side.
The third floor is similar, with the addition of a seminar room, boardroom and kitchen on the south side. The
fourth floor is dedicated to research offices, a second seminar room and the Black Hole Bistro.
Parking is free of charge in the lot located between the front of the building and the Canadian Clay and Glass
Gallery; however you will need to display a parking permit. Please contact Sheena at Reception, ext. 5191, for
your permit.
If you need help finding your way around, you can access floor plans on PINET at https://intra.pi.local/.
Floor plans are also posted on each floor of the building.
35 King St. N.
The second building, a historic post office with clock tower, is located just over a block away on the corner of King
Street and Dupont Street.
Facilities at 31 Caroline St.
Kitchen Facilities
Full kitchen facilities are provided on the south side of the third
floor. Fridges are provided for your use and store milk and cream
for coffee. Complementary cold beverages, a pool table, table
tennis (ping pong), and couches are all ready to make your day
more comfortable.
The Black Hole Bistro
The fourth floor bistro is open on weekdays for coffee in the
mornings, lunch from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m., afternoon high tea at 3:00
p.m. (please call ahead) , and a dinner service into the evening,
except when there is an event in the Bistro. The diverse menu
changes daily. Several nights throughout the week include themed
events – such as games night and pub night. A selection of
sandwiches is available on weekends. You can check what’s going
on at the Bistro on the Events Calendar via PINET at
https://intra.pi.local/, and click the link to the calendar at the top of
the page.
The Bistro is open to PI residents and their guests. Members of
the general public are occasionally permitted to enjoy the fine food
and atmosphere in conjunction with ticketed events.
The Record, The National Post, Globe & Mail and Toronto Star are
all received daily and available for your perusal in the Bistro.
Please return the newspapers to this location after you have
reviewed them. The foosball table is also found in the Bistro.
Lounges and Coffee Stations
Comfortable leather couches, cappuccino machines and
blackboards around every corner make the lounges scattered
throughout the building a meeting place for discussion, debate
and….caffeine. Please make yourself at home, being mindful that
others will appreciate you tidying the space after you leave.
6 Fireplaces
There are wood-burning fireplaces throughout the building. The fireplaces are a wonderful and safe feature of the
Institute, but do require monitoring when in use. Please do not place any items, even paper, inside the fireplaces.
Fires will be started by building maintenance, please contact them at ext. 7002 should you wish to use a fireplace.
Fitness
On the first floor, on the north side of the building behind the Reflecting Lounge, you will find an exercise room,
squash court and change rooms complete with sauna. For your own safety, before accessing these rooms you will
need a brief training session, which can be arranged by Reception, at ext. 5191.
Music Practice Room
On the first floor, in front of the Mike Lazaridis Theatre of Ideas, there is a music practice room which contains a
piano that is at your disposal when the theatre is not in use. If you wish to use the practice room, please contact
Reception, at Ext. 5191.
Daily Newspapers
The Record, The National Post, Globe & Mail and Toronto Star are all received daily and available for your perusal
in the Bistro. Please return the newspapers to this location after you have reviewed them. If you missed an article
relevant to PI in one of the papers, contact the external relations department at ext. 5011 for a clipping or
electronic copy.
Smoking
Regional by-laws prohibit smoking inside Perimeter Institute, as well as all public places in the Region of Waterloo.
Smoking is permitted outside the building and ashtrays in the form of large grey pylons have been provided.
Additionally, please note that smoking is not permitted in any of PI’s apartments.
George Leibbrandt Library
A variety of books, periodicals, and electronic journals can be found in
the George Leibbrandt Library, accessible from the first and second
floors. If you are visiting for more than two weeks, your Access Card
has been set up to function as a library card. The library books are
protected by a security system so please go to the checkout station to
sign out and return your books. If you are visiting for less than two
weeks, please see Dawn Bombay, the Librarian to coordinate access
to library resources
University of Waterloo
Long-term visitors and PI residents have full access to the University
of Waterloo library system, which includes materials from the
University of Waterloo, University of Guelph and Wilfrid Laurier
University. Electronic access to journals is also available. The
University of Waterloo library is within walking distance through
Waterloo Park. Note: Before you can access the University system,
you will need to obtain a library card. For more information, please see
the Librarian.
To access the University of Waterloo library remotely, please point
your web browser at: http://login.lib.uwaterloo.ca
You’ll need to supply your last name and the barcode number from the
back of your library card.
7 Your Office
Office Supplies
The supply cabinet is located on the second floor in the administrative side of
the building, underneath the staircase across from Room 211. You are
welcome to help yourself to any necessary supplies. If you are unable to find
what you are looking for please contact Reception, ext. 5191, for assistance
in obtaining/ordering the supplies you need.
Computers
Perimeter Institute currently provides
desktop support for Linux and MSWindows XP Pro based operating
systems and limited support for Apple
OS/X based computers. Our server
infrastructure is based on Linux and MSWindows Server 2003. This infrastructure
has met the needs of most of our
researchers and visitors; if you have
special requirements outside of these
areas please contact The Visitor Program
Coordinator (ext. 6061) before your
arrival. After you arrive, please submit a
help desk ticket (available from the
Intranet website) or contact the help desk
at ext. 7051.
Perimeter generally tries to use open
source software to meet its’ application
software needs. Some of the directly
supported packages include SSH,
Fortran, C++, LaTeX, gnuplot, and
inkscape. We also provide access to
some commercial software packages
including Maple, Matlab, Mathematica,
and MS Office.
Email
Our e-mail infrastructure is based on MS-Exchange 2003 in order to support
integration with our BlackBerry devices. Supported email clients include MS
Outlook, Outlook web client, pine, and the default mail client in OS/X.
Your email address will be the first letter of your first name and your last
[email protected]. E.g. John Smith – [email protected].
SHARCNET
Perimeter researchers have access to the SHARCNET high performance
computing facilities. Please view the introductory SHARCNET article on the
Intranet for further details or contact John McCormick (ext. 6081).
IT Help Ticket System
Perimeter has implemented a help desk system which is available from the
Intranet at: https://intra.pi.local/mantis/
Please use the help desk system to log any infrastructure issues you
experience. Our IT team will track, assign, and resolve any problems as
quickly as possible. You may also contact the help desk person at ext. 6073 or
come directly to office 207.

8 Printers
There are printers located on each wing of levels two, three, and four. There is also a printer located in the
library on level one. All of these printers are black and white units with duplex capabilities.
A colour printer (without duplex capability) is available in room 212. As well, there are two colour
photocopiers which have higher quality printing capabilities located on the second floor of both wings.

Please contact the IT Help Desk if you need help setting up a particular printer.
Finally, as noted above, the machines can be used to print your documents. Please contact the IT
department for assistance with setting up the necessary printer drivers.
Photocopying, Scanning, and Faxing
Perimeter has two Xerox Work Center Pro C3545 machines. One is located across from Room 211 on the
second floor, south wing, near the supply cabinet; the second is located under the stairwell across from room
253 in the north wing.
This user-friendly machine has many copying capabilities including the ability to enlarge/reduce, duplex, and
staple. A wide variety of output media (including transparencies) can be used.
The machine can also be used to scan documents to a number of formats (tiff, pdf) and will email the resulting
document to whomever you specify. If you are scanning transparencies, please scan them in the landscape
orientation to prevent jamming.
The machines are capable of faxing documents. Currently, we have not implemented long distance codes for
this service (we encourage you to use the scan to email functionality instead). Only the south side Xerox
machine is able to receive faxes.

Finally, as noted above, the machines can be used to print your documents. Please contact the IT department
for assistance with setting up the necessary printer drivers.
OCR and CD/DVD Burning
A single-page scanner and CD/DVD burner are located on a workstation in the first floor of the library. We
encourage you to use the photocopiers for scanning purposes as they are more convenient. However, if you
require OCR (Optical Character Recognition) software you should use this machine. Instructions are available at
the station. This workstation also has a CD/DVD burner so that you can make a copy of your files on CD (or
DVD) if your desktop or laptop does not have these capabilities.

Perimeter Institute’s website offers a wealth of information about Scientific and Outreach activities past

Infocaster
Infocaster is a multimedia device that communicates information about current events at Perimeter Institute.
There are three Infocasters, one near the main entry, another near Visitor Services, and another in the Black
Hole Bistro.

Some points to remember are:
Garbage is collected Monday to Friday only, and must be placed at the
curb by 7:00 am.
Yard waste is collected separately from April to November. It must be
in paper bags, bundles, or containers identified with brightly coloured
ribbon.
If you have a large metal item, like a washing machine, you must call
for a pickup.
There is collection on all statutory holidays except Christmas Day and
New Year’s Day, which delay pick-up by one week day.
Snow Removal
Snowplows clear all roadways, but prioritize them in the following order:
Major arterial roads and Uptown streets.
Remaining arterial roads, bus routes and high volume rural roads.
Collector roads and medium volume rural roads.
Local residential and rural roads with low volume.
Cul-de-sacs are serviced with a plow that goes around once to allow
movement and is later cleaned up with another piece of equipment.
Each road grouping also has standards for maintenance. In general, the
maximum depth of snow acceptable on major arterial roads and downtown
streets is 5 cm (2 inches) and on local residential and rural roads is 13 cm (5
inches). The remainder of the roads falls in between these limits.
The owner or occupant of a property is required to remove all snow and ice
from sidewalks on the street in front or along the side of the property within 24
hours after a snowfall. For the safety and convenience of all pedestrians we
urge you to do your part in keeping the sidewalks clear.

15 Education
Schools
All permanent residents between the ages of 6 and 16 must attend school, as
stipulated in the Ontario Education Act which can be accessed through the
Government of Ontario's Ministry of Education website (www.edu.gov.on.ca).
The Education Act also ensures that all children, regardless of their physical or
mental capabilities, have access to education suitable to them. School boards
provide a comprehensive selection of programs for children with special
needs. Students are generally required to attend the school in the area where
they live. Busing is limited.
Elementary schools provide programs for junior and senior kindergarten (for
children aged 4 & 5) and grades one to eight (aged 6 - 13). The majority of the
public school board schools are split into elementary and senior elementary
schools, whereas the separate school board has composite elementary
schools with kindergarten through to grade 8. Secondary school provides
programs for children in grades 9 through 12.
Tuition fees and Study Permits for any of your children under the age of
majority (18 years of age in Ontario) are waived if you have a Work Permit.
The school year begins early in September, and ends in late June, with a
vacation of about two weeks at the end of December and a week-long break in
March. Schools operate Monday through Friday. The school day runs from
about 8:30 am to 3:30 pm.

English is the language of instruction in the schools, though Waterloo district
has a French language school board for the children of Francophone parents.
In addition, a number of schools in the public and separate systems offer
optional French immersion programs, where all or most subjects are taught in
French. English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are given where there
is a need, at both elementary and secondary school levels, and are also
offered in the evenings for adults.

Grand River Transit travels throughout the cities of Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge on a fixed route
schedule. In particular, there are direct buses from Uptown Waterloo to both universities (Route 7), Fairview
Mall (Route 8) and Conestoga Mall (Route 12). Fares are $2.50 and are good for 60 minutes of travel. Tickets
may be at reduced fares at the Kitchener Bus Terminal or any location displaying the GRT TICKET AGENT sign,
including grocery and convenience stores. Tickets are $1.75 each and exact change must be used to purchase
them.

Greyhound Bus Lines
Greyhound Bus lines offer transit to other cities, and depart from the Grand River Transit Kitchener Bus
Terminal. To get to the station take the Grand River Transit Bus #7 South on King Street. This will take you
directly to the Greyhound Terminal where a bus leaves about every hour to Toronto.
