and her son, Anthony Purcell and

world of Spinal Cord Injury.

• The First Step Foundation was
developed to help those with spinal
cord injuries, Cerebral Palsy, Multiple
Sclerosis, and many other disorders
affecting the neuromuscular system,
gain access to Barwis Methods’ Injury
Recovery Program when traditional
physical therapy has fallen short and/or
insurance coverage has run out.
• Funding for the First Step Foundation
helps to provide training scholarships to
program enrollees, educate more trainers
in Injury Recovery Program methodologies
(Neurological Reengineering), & purchase
necessary equipment for the Injury
Recovery Program.

TRAILBLAZER: BROCK MEALER
A tragic car accident on Christmas Eve 2007, in which a 90 year old man ran a
stop sign, left Brock paralyzed from the waist down (was given a 1% chance of
walking again) and took the lives of his father and his brother’s girlfriend, Hollis.
With the help of Mike Barwis, Brock was able to lead the Michigan Wolverines
onto the field for their home opener in 2010 with 2 canes and ankle braces and in
December of 2012, he was able to stand and walk down the aisle on his wedding
day with his bride, Haley, without canes. Brock's progress continues at Barwis
Methods, as he now walks without ankle braces, and can walk over a half mile
without assistance of any kind & since, Barwis and his team have gone on to help
over 100 other individuals regain the Power to Move.
The First Step Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.

SPINAL CORD INJURY
• Currently in the US there are 1.275 million spinal cord accidents a year.
• Insurance companies generally cover the cost of only 20 days of rehab, a continual need of those
affected by SCI.
• Today there are many proven therapies pushing the limits of science available to individuals with SCI,
the only problem is the astronomical costs.
• The cost of therapy for someone affected by Spinal Cord Injury is at a minimum $100,000
& can be as much as $500,000 annually.

He has trained over 625 Olympic and professional athletes in more
than 40 sporting events during his 25+ years of experience. Mike
is currently the Sr. Advisor of Strength and Conditioning for the
New York Mets and was formerly the Strength and Conditioning
Consultant for the Miami Dolphins, as well as the Director of Strength
and Conditioning for the University of Michigan and West Virginia
University. Mike has also founded two nonprofit organizations—
Athletic Angels and the First Step Foundation. Athletic Angels
was created to provide athletic, academic, mentoring and financial
resources to impoverished youth in the community.
The First Step Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.

EDEN HOELSCHER
5 year old Eden Hoelscher was at home practicing back bends for her gymnastic class
when her mother, Kylee Hoelscher, heard her crying because she had lost her footing.
Although she complained that her back, hips and legs hurt, Eden's mother never imagined
that her daughter had just suffered a rare spinal cord stroke which resulted in paralysis.
Within a half hour, Eden sat "in wonder" as she told her mom she felt like her feet were
sleeping. When asked to move her leg, she stared at it and replied, "I can't, Mom".
Doctors said Eden's spine was hyper-extended during this one out of the 100 back bends
she has completed, causing the artery that feeds her spinal cord to stop pumping blood,
resulting in the rare spinal cord stroke. "The extent of damage is unheard of. Her stroke
was in T8/9, she stretched the ligaments in T3/4, and the damage extends up and down
her spinal cord from T2-T12." Kylee, says the back bend that has limited her daughter's
mobility, has not taken away her spirit. According to her therapy team, "Daredevil Eden"
accomplished 6 weeks rehab in two weeks. Therapy team, doctors and nurses agree, "If
anyone can recover from this, Eden can".

KJ was hit by a car while riding his go-cart to his grandpa's house. It was suppose to be
a celebration. He had just made the 6 year old little league all-star baseball team. Sliding
about 55 feet and unconscious, his multiple injuries included a shattered spine & pelvis,
punctured right lung, broken ribs, lacerated liver/spleen and internal bleeding. His grandpa
kept him alive with CPR for about 35-40 mins until the EMT arrived. The good news is his
chances for mobility are higher because of his T-9/T-10 injury location. Only recovery can
make that happen. Prior to his injury, KJ played football, basketball, and baseball and was
an Honor Roll student. He shined in every sport he played. A smile that opens doors and
a spirit that follows through, KJ has continued to love and participate in sports at any level
he can...and continues to be an unstoppable superstar!
