Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
We are truly blessed by God and His abundant grace as we gather in Philadelphia
for the 42nd Biennial Clergy-Laity Congress of our Holy Archdiocese. We have come to
this city named as the “city of brotherly love” as people of love and faith, prepared to offer a witness of the Gospel and the unity we share in Christ. We welcome each and all of
you to Philadelphia and our Congress. May we dedicate our time, prayers, and efforts to
enhancing and extending our offering of the love of Christ to all.
On behalf of the members of the Holy Eparchial Synod and the Archdiocesan
Council, I extend our gratitude to His Eminence Metropolitan Evangelos and Congress
co-chairs Anastasia Michals and Michael Karloutsos, as well as the beloved faithful of the
Metropolis of New Jersey for hosting this Congress. We are thankful for their hospitality
and together we pray that this 42nd Clergy-Laity Congress will be a successful and memorable meeting. We also express our deepest gratitude and respect to His All Holiness
Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew for sending His Eminence Metropolitan Athenagoras
of Belgium and His Eminence Metropolitan Stefanos of Kallioupolis and Madytos as Patriarchal Representatives.
As we discuss the vital work of our Holy Archdiocese during the course of the Congress, we will be guided by our Congress theme, “The Orthodox Christian Family: A
Dwelling of Christ and a Witness of His Gospel.” This theme continues and expands
our focus on families and the home, helping us to consider how we are strengthening and
nurturing Orthodox Christian families. In doing this, we affirm with the Apostle Paul,
from God every family in Heaven and on earth is named (Ephesians 3:15), and that
every family must be connected to God for the life, well-being and potential of the family
and each member. We also know that when families are connected to God, Christ will
dwell with them, guiding them to be powerful witnesses of the Gospel.
Over the next few days as we worship and pray together, as we review the tremendous progress being made on all levels of our Holy Archdiocese, may we seek divine
guidance in following our calling to strengthen families. May we also be renewed in the
mission and commitment we share as Orthodox Christians. Let us have a blessed 42nd
Biennial Clergy-Laity Congress filled with joy, fellowship and love.

Reflections on the Congress Theme
“The Orthodox Christian Family: A Dwelling of Christ and A Witness of His Gospel”

Our theme, “The Orthodox Christian Family: A
Dwelling of Christ and A Witness of His Gospel,” is
based on the prayer offered by the Apostle Paul in his
letter to the Ephesians – For this reason I bow my knees
before the Father, from whom every family in heaven
and on earth is named (Ephesians 3:15). This proclamation affirms that God is the source and identity of the
family. He created us in His divine image and likeness.
He also created the family. As we live in a time when
family as an institution is frequently attacked, such a
statement is vital. The history of divine revelation as
presented in the Holy Scriptures is filled with references to the family. From the creation of the human
race with the first family--Adam, Eve, Cain and Abel-to the origins of the Hebrew people with Abraham and
Sarah, Isaac and Jacob, and their descendants, family
becomes the context for God’s divine work. Family is
also essential in the fulfillment of His divine plan in the
Incarnation of Christ. Our Lord was born into a family,
and He spent thirty years with His family in Nazareth
before starting His three years of public ministry.
The role of the family in the history of God’s
revelation to humankind is joined in Holy Scripture by
many passages that present the identity and ideals of
what God intended the family to be. In the book of
Proverbs and the deuterocanonical books of the Wisdom of Solomon and the Wisdom of Sirach, we are offered guidance on the qualities of family life. Further,
many counsels presuppose a family environment. In
the New Testament, the Apostle Paul addresses family
relationships in several of his Epistles, offering guidance to husbands and wives, parents and children, and
emphasizing the priority of love, commitment, and
faith.
All of this together offers a strong, biblical
foundation for our emphasis on the family as Church
or kat’oikon ekklesia (Romans 16:5, Colossians 4:15).
This concept is related to the early Christian practice
of conducting worship, teaching, and fellowship in the
homes of believers, closely connecting the life of the
family with the life of the Church (Acts 2:41-47).
The relationships shared by the members of a
family and by the family with the Church are essential to understanding the meaning of the Apostle Paul’s
statement, from God every family in Heaven and on
earth is named. When the family is connected to God
and is the dwelling of Christ, great and abundant blessings will come. As further exclaimed by the Apostle
in Ephesians 3, we can know that God will provide all
that we need from the riches of His glory. Families
that live in Christ and offer a witness of His Gospel,
that are rooted and grounded in love, will find inner
strength, will gain the wisdom of the Saints, will know
the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge…and be
filled with all the fullness of God (Ephesians 3:16-19).
The Orthodox Christian Family
As Orthodox Christians we are blessed with a
beautiful and rich spiritual heritage that offers us tremendous guidance and resources for strengthening
and ministering to the family. We have emphasized
the biblical basis of this heritage from the Old Testament, the life of Christ and the identity of the family
in the early Church. On this foundation has been built
the continuous witness of the character of the family
through the lives of many faithful and Saints. In addition to the holy lives that offer an example of family life
in communion with God, we find numerous sermons
and letters that offer guidance on marriage and raising
children, prayers and exhortations for strengthening the
family in the face of challenges and adversity, and the
power and continuity of our rich heritage of worship
and fellowship within the local parish.
From this heritage and resources of our Orthodox faith, we can see that the Orthodox Christian
family is first and foremost a family that lives in strong
connection with God. As we discussed above, God is
the source and identity of the family. Families that are
connected with God will be what God intends them
to be. Further, the relationship and communion with
God is nurtured when families use the resources that
6 are offered by our faith. When a family reads the Holy
Scriptures and hearts and minds are filled with the truth
of God, when a family learns about the holy lives of
parents and children who became Saints and seeks to
follow their witness, when a family participates fully in
the life of the parish through worship, the sacraments,
and ministry, that family is an Orthodox Christian family. From this relationship with God and with a strong
and holy identity as an Orthodox Christian family, a
family is then able to reveal the true character and nature of the family.
When a family is identified as a genuine Orthodox Christian family, it offers a beautiful and holy witness to the world of the blessed and abundant life in
communion with God. The Orthodox Christian family
knows the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge…
and is filled with all the fullness of God (Ephesians
3:16-19). Through worship of Him and service to others, the family offers a visible example of the true identity of the family and what God created the family to be.
All of their endeavors and relationships become opportunities to share the grace of God, to bear spiritual fruit
in their lives and the lives of others, and to reveal the
blessed life and promises that come from the Father.
This identity and witness of the Orthodox
Christian family should be one of our primary concerns
at all levels of our Holy Archdiocese. We have begun
an essential and critical work through the Center for
Family Care. We have enhanced our resources on marriage and family life, but there is so much more to do.
We must prayerfully seek God’s guidance in extending these ministries and initiating others that will reach
more families in need, bring families into our parishes,
and establish and nurture the Church in the home. We
need to gather additional resources and plan additional means to nurture, strengthen, and protect Orthodox
Christian families.
A Dwelling of Christ
Our theme directs our attention to the true identity of the family as created by God and to the nature of
family life when connected to Him. For the Orthodox
Christian family, being connected to God in this way
means that the family is the dwelling of Christ.
First, we must affirm that in the Risen Lord and
the power of His Resurrection we find true life. This is
life that is free from corruption and death. It is an abundant life that overcomes sin and evil. It is life that is
filled with the grace of God and seeks His will. When
the family is connected to God, Christ is welcomed and
recognized in its midst. Family members live and share
in the life that is given to them by Him. His holiness
and power is known. His love is felt and shared.
Second, the Orthodox Christian family is the
dwelling of Christ through the power and presence
of the Holy Spirit. In preparing His disciples for the
time when He would no longer be physically present
with them, Christ said, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit,
whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach
you all things, and bring to remembrance all things that
I said to you” (John 14:26). The Holy Spirit dwells
with and within the family connected to God, producing the spiritual fruit of love, joy, peace, longsuffering,
kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and selfcontrol (Galatians 5:22-23). These are the attributes
that are essential in maintaining strong bonds of love
and faith within the home and the lives of each member
of the family.
Finally, as a dwelling of Christ filled with the
presence and fruit of the Holy Spirit, the home becomes a sacred place, a holy environment, a Church in
the home - kat’oikon ekklesia (Romans 16:5; I Corinthians 16:20). The home becomes a place of worship,
as each member, both individually and together, offer
praise and thanksgiving to God. It is a place of prayer,
as the family seeks the guidance, wisdom, and forgiveness of God in the challenges of family life. It is a place
of teaching and nurture, where our Orthodox Christian
faith is discussed and lived by example. The home and
family that is a dwelling of Christ is also a place of
service. Each member of the family seeks to serve the
needs of the other members, and together, the family
offers diakonia to friends, neighbors, and to any in need
as they are led by the Spirit.
To become and remain a dwelling of Christ, the
family needs the support of the local parish. Certainly,
it is essential that the family participate in the life of the
parish; but it is also critical that the work of the parish
proceeds with a clear awareness of the spiritual needs
and challenges of families. Our priorities and work
Congress Program Guide must be directed toward increasing our support and
resources for the family, so that through faith and the
presence of Christ, families become and remain strong
and vibrant Orthodox Christian families.
A Witness of His Gospel
With the biblical affirmation that every family in
Heaven and on earth is named by God, we have recognized the vital connection of the family to God. When
the family is connected to God, and the lives and home
of the family are filled with the presence of Christ, the
family will offer a true and beautiful witness of the
grace, life, joy, and love that is presented in the Gospel.
As the family experiences the forgiveness and healing
offered by God, others will see His love. As the family
finds assurance in the truth of the Gospel in the midst
of a world of confusion, others will see the strength and
wisdom that comes from above. As the family overcomes challenges and faces hardships with an enduring peace and unquenchable hope, others will see the
power of grace and truth.
This witness of the Gospel by the Orthodox
Christian family is offered through the life of the family, through all that the family does, and through the
lives of each member. It is a witness that is reflected in
the identity and character of the family that is connected to God. First and foremost, it is shown in the love
that family members have for God and for each other-through the commitment to the life and well-being of
each member, through the sacrifices made for the family, and through the effort to keep the life of the family
focused on Christ. The family is also a witness of the
Gospel through faithfulness in worship and prayer. For
the Orthodox Christian family, worship both in the parish and in the home is sacred and essential. It is time
that is cherished and protected. When the family shows
that communion with God is a priority, others will see a
witness of the source of their love and hope.
The family also offers a witness of the Gospel
through service to others. From the love of God experienced through the presence of Christ, each member
offers service through the ministries and special opportunities in their parish, as well as in their daily lives
when needs arise. As the family prays together, the
family serves together. Husbands and wives share the
love of God side by side. Parents show their children

the life in Christ by example and by teaching them how
to respond to the needs of others. From this foundation
of shared service, each member of the family is prepared to offer the compassion and healing of Christ in
the home, at school, in the workplace, and in every moment and opportunity when the Gospel can be shared.
Our responsibility as leaders in our parishes,
Metropolises and Archdiocese is to provide the support, resources, and coordination so that families can
be what God created them to be. We must affirm the
priority of ministry to the family. We must focus our
efforts on connecting families to God. Certainly, this is
essential for the salvation and well-being of each member, but it is also vital to our work in sharing the Gospel.
As stated above when families are connected to God,
when Christ dwells with the family, the Gospel will be
shared. To fulfill our calling to go and teach the Gospel,
we are called to nurture and guide families to be Orthodox Christian families.

will officially open the Exhibit Hall on Sunday, July 6 at 3:30 pm. The Exhibit Hall will close on Wednesday, July 9 at 5:00 pm.

ARCHDIOCESAN COUNCIL: The Archdiocesan Council is the advisory and consultative body of the Archbishop. It interprets and implements the decisions of the Clergy-Laity Congress and the Regulations of the Archdiocese. The Archdiocesan Council is comprised of clergy and laypersons from throughout the Archdiocese.
Members of the council are delegates to the Clergy-Laity Congress.

NATIONAL PHILOPTOCHOS: The Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society is the official philanthropic
organization of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. They have developed a full schedule of meetings
and workshops throughout the week.

ARCHDIOCESAN PRESBYTERS COUNCIL: The Archdiocesan Presbyters Council (APC) seeks to support, enhance and promote the clergy on all levels of their diakonia. They have developed a worthwhile program
including workshops and an Archdiocese Benefits Office in Room 406.

SISTERHOOD OF PRESVYTERES: Formally established in 1982, the Sisterhood of Presvyteres consists
of all Presvyteres of the Archdiocese. The purpose of the Sisterhood is to promote the spirit and Christian love
among the Presvyteres by giving them opportunities to get acquainted with one another. They over-see the Child
Care Program and meet daily as scheduled.

RETIRED GREEK ORTHODOX CLERGY OF AMERICA: RCA was established in 1988 with the following
in mind: promote the fellowship of retired priests, encourage the utilization of retired clergy, guide those who are
about to retire and promote the benefits of retired clergy.

ARCHONS OF THE ECUMENICAL PATRIARCHATE: The Archons of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of the
Order of Saint Andrew the Apostle are laymen of the Archdiocese who have been honored for their outstanding
service to the Church by having a Patriarchal title or “Offikion” bestowed upon them by the Ecumenical Patriarch.
National Commander: Dr. Anthony J. Limberakis
ORTHODOX CHAPLAINS: The Greek Orthodox Chaplain is a priest who provides the Holy Mysteries to
Orthodox Christians and who additionally provides pastoral ministry to people in all walks of life. Some serve as
military chaplains, at veteran’s hospitals, with local police, prisons and hospitals.
Military Ordinary: His Eminence Metropolitan Isaiah of Denver
NATIONAL FORUM OF GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH MUSICIANS: The National Forum is the
Archdiocese ministry responsible for liturgical music activities and the development, support and recognition of
church musicians. The forum will meet daily as scheduled and will sponsor a workshop on Tuesday afternoon.

Outreach & Evangelism - Orthodox Natural Church Development

Fr. Jonathan Ivanoff, Director of Orthodox NCD will present an overview of a program being successfully implemented in parishes throughout the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America. This comprehensive tool came to
our attention several years ago when the Director was invited to participate in “making Orthodox” a process
called Natural Church Development (NCD). This program, in use for over 20 years and in over 70,000 parishes
worldwide, is designed to assist parishes to objectively evaluate, assess and measure church health by focusing
on eight quality characteristics. The most attractive aspects of the ONCD program are that it is: 1. Scripturally
based; 2. Patristically supported; 3. Measureable and quantifiable; and, 4. Engages church members in the process. This program has become the official program for parish growth in the Denver Metropolis, and is being
rolled out this year in each district of the Boston Metropolis.
Family/Marriage-Interfaith Marriage - Synergy: Clergy Family & Parish Family

In this workshop, clergy and laity together will explore the unique relationship of the clergy family within
the parish family in order to foster greater mutual awareness, understanding and cooperation. The workshop
will be interactive, utilizing theological truth, spiritual insights, empirical research, experiential anecdotes, and
group discussion. Presenters: Fr. Harry Pappas and Presvytera Kerry Pappas.
Family/Marriage- Interfaith Marriage - Reaching the Distantly Connected
Franklin 4
Anecdotal information suggests that many churches are reporting a drop in attendance and commitment among
members of Generations X and Y. Archdiocesan statistics also suggest that fewer intermarried couples are opting
to marry in the Greek Orthodox Church. This workshop will address these trends and pastoral challenges. In
particular, the first part of the workshop will describe some frightening trends that should concern all clergy and
lay leaders. The second part of the workshop will provide helpful strategies, together with a proposed protocol
to help communities reach out to the distantly connected. Presenter: Fr. Charles Joanides
Youth/Young Adults - Youth and Young Adult Ministries: Basic Training Rooms 411/412
Our youth and young adults evolve quickly and we should adapt our approach accordingly. In this session, we
will review the needs of our young people, explore ways we can better fulfill their needs, and discuss strategies
to minister more effectively to them going forward.
Religious Education - Keeping Parents Involved with Their Child’s Religious Education GB Salon I
Will explore strategies that Sunday Church school and other religious education programs use to establish and
maintain connections with parents and show them the benefits that religious education programs have for children and youth. Led by Dr. Anton Vrame and Presv. Aimee Ehrs.
Inter-Orthodox, Ecumenical & Interfaith Relations – Organ Donation & Brain Death

This workshop/forum will feature two expert bioethicists -- Gayle Woloschak and Father Nathanael Symeonides
-- as well as a family who has donated or received organs. The main goal is to educate people about organ donation and about brain death. The workshop will give them the opportunity to be better informed about end-of-life
choices, including life-support, DNR (Do-not-Resuscitate Order), organ donation and procurement.

Family/Marriage-Interfaith Marriage - Preparing Couples for Marriage in the Orthodox Church Room 413
Choosing to marry is one of the biggest decisions people make in their lives, yet most couples spend more time
planning for the wedding than preparing for the marriage. This session will introduce participants to the new
Archdiocesan marriage preparation program, The Journey of Marriage, designed to connect couples to their
priest and parish as they begin their own journey of marriage. The Journey of Marriage program is the only marriage preparation program that combines the Orthodox understanding of marriage with contemporary marriage
preparation research to prepare couples. We will discuss how to use this program as a stand alone program, or in
conduction with other preparation resources, such as PREPARE, for individual couples, as well as large groups.

This workshop will introduce participants to the work of the Family Ministry Collaborative and its plans for the
future. Specifically, it will focus on the soon to be released Celebration of Marriage Module, the need for marriage enrichment in the parish, and resources to support this ministry. Inspiration on how to support marriage
in your parish with a focus on gratitude, humility and eternal life will be presented. This workshop will explore
how you can challenge couples in your parish to practice effective connection and communication in their relationship. Presenters: Fr. Timothy Pavlatos and Paula Marchman

Inter-Orthodox, Ecumenical & Interfaith Relations - Christians in the Middle East Room 408/409
This forum will feature members of the US Commission of International Religious Freedom (USCIRF). The
purpose of this forum is to educate our people on the current crisis in the Middle East and to teach them how
personally and on a parish level to become advocates in our society on behalf of Christians and other persecuted
religious groups in the Middle East and beyond. This is also a forum that will serve as a follow-up to the Apostolic Pilgrimage, which will focus on the Christians in the Middle East.
