Hallo Laserdisc- und DVD-Fans,
liebe Filmfreunde!
Als wir die beiden vorausgegangenen
Ausgaben unseres Newsletters ohne
das dazugehörige traditionelle Editorial verschickt haben, waren wir eigentlich frohen Mutes, dass das niemand
bemerken würde und somit kein
schlechtes Gewissen haben müssen.
Dass das offensichtlich ein großer Irrtum war, durften wir in den vergangenen vier Wochen anhand vieler Gespräche erfahren, die wir am Telefon oder
auch im Ladenlokal mit Kunden geführt haben. Da stellt sich zwar im
Nachhinein noch das schlechte Gewissen ein, gleichzeitig aber freut man
sich darüber, dass die einleitenden
Worte tatsächlich gelesen werden! Und
damit herzlich willkommen zur neuen
Ausgabe des Newsletters und zu unserem überfälligen Editorial.
Scharfe Sachen
Nach wie vor tobt der Formatkrieg an
der Heimkinofront. Ob nun HD DVD
oder Blu-ray das Rennen machen wird,
weiß nach wie vor niemand mit absoluter Sicherheit zu sagen. Momentan jedoch hat Blu-ray in Europa die Nase
vorn. Auch Anbieter Senator hat sich
jüngst für dieses Format entschieden
und wird PANS LABYRINTH als Bluray Disc veröffentlichen. Eine Frage,
die sich angesichts des neuen TechnikHypes fast niemand stellt, ist schlicht
und ergreifend: ”Brauche ich überhaupt einen HD-Player?”. Die Redaktion der Stiftung Warentest hat sich unlängst genau mit dieser Frage befasst
und kam zu einem ernüchternden Urteil. Denn erst bei einer Bilddiagonale
von 1,50 Meter und mehr fällt die höhere Auflösung ins Gewicht. Für alles,
was darunter liegt, tut es ein herkömmlicher DVD-Player der gehobenen
Preisklasse alle Mal. Erfreulich, dass
sich diese Erkenntnis genau mit unserer Meinung deckt. Sofern Sie also
noch ihre DVDs auf herkömmlichem
Wege konsumieren, sollten Sie mit der
Anschaffung eines hochauflösenden
Players noch warten, damit Sie nicht
vorschnell auf das falsche Format setzen. Auch wenn so mancher Branchenkenner meint, dass beide HD-Formate
bestehen bleiben, sind wir der Ansicht,

dass letztendlich maximal ein Format
überleben wird. Ob es dann eines der
jetzt verfügbaren sein wird oder gar
ein ganz anderes, das steht in den Sternen. Grund zur Panik besteht keinesfalls. Vergleicht man die Verkaufszahlen von Standard-DVDs und hochauflösenden DVDs, so wird schnell klar,
dass der Standard-DVD noch viele
glückliche Jahre bevorstehen.
5 x 300
Fans harter Actionkost sollten sich den
10. August schon mal rot in ihrem Terminkalender anstreichen. Denn an jenem Freitag wird Warner Home Video
Deutschland einen der bluttriefendsten
Filme der letzten Monate auf DVD
veröffentlichen. Die Rede ist von 300,
jenem Blockbuster, der nach einem
Comic von Frank Miller entstand und
seinem Betrachter in sehr expliziten,
aber dennoch kunstvoll gestalteten
CinemaScope-Bildern, die berühmteste
Spartanerschlacht der Antike vor Augen führt. Der komplett digital nachbearbeitete Film lässt mehr als nur einmal die roten Blutkörperchen in Slow
Motion über die Leinwand spritzen und
weidet sich sattsam an dem höllischen
Gemetzel, das sicherlich nichts für
schwache Gemüter darstellt - auch
wenn die FSK diesen Film bereits ab
16 Jahren freigegeben hat. Wer nach
einer tiefschürfenden Botschaft in diesem wie auf Pergament gebannten Film
sucht, ist selber schuld. Hier geht es
nur um das Wie, nicht aber um das
Warum und Weshalb. Und das spiegelt
sich natürlich auch im DVD-Release
des Films wider. Warner geht hier
gleich mit fünf Versionen an den Start:
Blu-ray, HD DVD, Standard DVD, Limitierte Doppel-DVD und streng limitierte Doppel-DVD in Sonderverpackung. Letztere dürfte speziell
alle Sammler ansprechen. In der
Produktbeschreibung heisst es dazu:
”Collector’s Edition in Sonderverpackung. Mit Helm (ca. 100x
178x152mm, ca. 280g), 32seitigem
Booklet „300: The Art of the Film“
und 4 Sammelkarten”. Dieses edle
Teil kostet EUR 49,90 und wird erfahrungsgemäß noch vor der Auslieferung
vergriffen sein. Daher gilt wie immer:
wer zuerst kommt mahlt zuerst! Also
gleich bestellen....
Aus-Zeit
Je näher der Juli kommt, umso näher
rücken auch wieder die beiden Sommer-Filmfestivals, auf die wir uns immer wieder freuen: das BollywoodFilmfestival (Stuttgart, 11.07.15.07.2007) und das Fantasy Filmfest
(Stuttgart, 25.07.-01.08.2007). Was
das Fantasy Filmfest angeht, so wurden
hierzu bereits die ersten Details bekanntgegeben. Eröffnungsfilm ist
BLACK SHEEP aus Neuseeland, der
das Genre des Tierhorrorfilms zu neuen Dimensionen führen wird. Freuen
darf man sich auch auf William
Friedkins BUG, mit dem der Meister
hoffentlich wieder zu seiner alten Form
zurückfinden wird. Und selbst
Bollywood ist auf dem Fantasy Filmfest vertreten: DHOOM II, ein
Actionfilm mit Song- und Dance-Einlagen und viel nackter Haut. Als
Centerpiece wird LA ANTENA aus
Argentinien zu sehen sein, mit dem so scheint es - der surrealistische
Stummfilm wiedergeboren wird. Alles
in allem dürfte dieses Festival wieder
viel Spaß machen und uns aufs Neue
an die Grenzen des Konsumierbaren
führen. Um nach diesem Marathon
wieder auf Normalpegel zu kommen,
haben wir uns entschlossen, uns gleich
im Anschluss daran einen richtigen
Urlaub zu gönnen. Und so werden wir
die Laser Hotline in der Zeit vom 26.
Juli 2007 bis einschließlich 26. August
2007 schließen. Keine Sorge - Sie werden nichts verpassen. Erfahrungsgemäß
werden die richtig interessanten DVDTitel erst wieder im Herbst veröffentlicht. Und bis dahin sind wir längst
wieder für Sie präsent. Übrigens war
unsere Urlaubsvorbereitung einer der
Hauptgründe für das Fehlen der Editorials in den Ausgaben 207 und 208.
Denn die Planung einer Individualreise
kann sehr zeitintensiv sein...

Packendes und detailgenaues True-Crime-Drama, mit dem
sich „Panic Room“-Regisseur David Fincher nach „Seven“
(1995) erstmals wieder dem Serienkiller-Genre zuwendet.
Der als „Zodiac“ bekannte Mörder gilt nach Jack The Ripper
als einer der berüchtigsten nie gefassten Serienkiller aller
Zeiten. Zwischen 1968 und 1974 verübte der maskierte
Soziopath in der Bay Area um San Francisco offiziell sechs,
möglicherweise jedoch bis zu 37 Morde. Anschließend
verhöhnte er Polizei und Medien mit kryptischen Briefen und
versetzte die Öffentlichkeit in Angst und Schrecken. U.a.
drohte er einen Bus mit Schulkindern ins Fadenkreuz (zudem
sein stilisiertes Markenzeichen) zu nehmen. Dies hinterließ
beim damals siebenjährigen, in der Gegend aufgewachsenen
Fincher einen nachhaltigen Eindruck. Eine morbide
Faszination für die Abgründen der menschlichen Seele findet
sich auch in Robert Graysmiths zwei penibel recherchierten
Tatsachenbüchern, auf denen das komplexe und mit einer
Vielzahl von Figuren versehene Skript von James Vanderbilt
(„Darkness Falls“) basiert.
Den verstörenden Auftakt bildet der nächtliche Angriff auf
ein junges Liebespärchen auf einem abgelegenen Parkplatz
in Vallejo am 4. Juli 1969. Der nicht erkennbare Täter feuert
wiederholt auf beide Opfer und lässt sie in ihrem Blut zurück.
Am 31. Juli (Daten und Stundenablauf werden wiederholt
zur Orientierungshilfe eingeblendet) erhalten drei lokale
Zeitungen Briefe mit einem Bekenntnis zu diesem und einem
Doppelmord ein paar Monate zuvor, inklusive eines
mysteriösen Kryptogramms. Beim „San Francisco Chronicle“
wird der lebenslustige Starreporter Paul Avery (perfekt: Robert
Downey Jr ) auf die sensationelle Story angesetzt. Unerwartet
interessiert zeigt sich auch der von seinen Kollegen nicht für

voll genommene Karikaturist Robert Graysmith (Jake Gyyllenhaal
fungiert als zentrale Sympathiefigur). Er beginnt eigene
Nachforschungen anzustellen. Die offiziellen Ermittlungen leitet
Mordinspektor David Toschi (souverän: Mark Ruffalo als der Cop,
der „Dirty Harry“ und „Die Straßen von San Francisco“ inspirierte).
Die Spur des Killers führt ihn über die Jahre hinweg zwar zu
insgesamt 2500 Verdächtigen, darunter der absonderliche
Päderast Arthur Leigh Allen (beängstigend: John Carroll Lynch),
jedoch aufgrund mangelnder Beweise zu keiner Verhaftung. Die
Obsession mit dem frustrierenden Fall hinterlässt sowohl beim
Inspektor als auch bei Avery, der drogensüchtig wird, und
Graysmith, dessen Frau (rührend: Chloe Sevigny) droht, ihn zu
verlassen, nachhaltige Spuren.
Der als Perfektionist bekannte Fincher verzichtet bei der
methodischen Inszenierung seines 158minütigen Kriminalepos
darauf, stilistische Saltos zu schlagen und konzentriert sich
stattdessen darauf, ein Höchstmaß an Authentizität zu erzielen.
Diese Diszipliniertheit evoziert 70er-Jahre-Klassiker von Sydney
Lumet und Alan J. Pakula (insbesondere „Die Unbestechlichen“,
dessen Komponist David Shire den Score beisteuerte). Durch
makelloses Produktionsdesign, fabelhafte Kostüme und Frisuren
wurde die Ära penibel akkurat rekreiert, ohne auf Klischees
zurückzugreifen. Gefilmt wurde die 75-Mio.-Dollar-Produktion
komplett mit HD-Videokameras, wobei die gedämpfte Farbpalette
ebenfalls zum faszinierenden Realismus beiträgt. Trotz der fast
ausschließlichen Ermittlungsperspektive wandelt dieser oft
nervenaufreibend spannende und atmosphärisch dichte Thriller
somit zweifelsohne auf den Spuren der Meisterwerke des
Genres. ara.

story of Dan Millman (Scott Melchowiz), an arrogant
college gymnast who finds a guru in the form of a
mysterious gas station attendant called Socrates (Nick
Nolte). Poised to qualify for the Olympics, Dan is
nonetheless troubled and Socrates seems to have the
answers. It’s an intensely personal journey that Dan is
invited to undergo, with Socrates seemingly able to
influence Dan’s dreams and knock him into states of
heightened awareness. It all gets to be too much, and
Dan gives up the training, but when a motorcycle accident
shatters his leg Dan may not have anything else left. He
has to learn to let go of the person he thought he was and
start living in the moment by appreciating the journey and
accepting his lack of control over the future. Though
undoubtedly allegorical, much of the film rings true (it’s
based on Millman’s life) and Nolte gives his stoic, grizzled
best in a difficult part. Director Victor Salva (POWDER,
