sponsoring a BBQ for the whole
church after the 10:30 worship!
Bring a side dish, and a friend! We’ll serve burgers and hotdogs to all!
September 11th
Worship at 9:00 a.m.

Have a great summer? Get out of the
habit of attending worship? Now’s the
best time to get back in the groove of
worship with your community of faith!
Join us this Sunday and learn how you, your family, your friends and neighbors can
get involved in BEING the church every day of the week! Don’t show up empty
handed, bring someone new with you!
Pastor Lisa’s Lines
I am all too aware of the hurt and hatred, the lonely and the longing the world is feeling. The climate of
the world seems to be pushing us into he said/she said, or us v. them. We live in what some would deem
a scary and terrifying time.
It is in times like these that I am tempted towards hatred, hurting, and acting out of fear. My gut tells me
to fight or flee. However, it is especially at times like these, that I am in need of following Jesus all the
more closely; finding ways to follow his greatest commandment to love God and love my neighbor as
myself.
For we were made for such a time as this! God calls us and longs for us to not be of this word, but simply
in it—behaving like Jesus, speaking words of love.
I am reminded of the words of the beautiful and faithful Mother Teresa. May we hear Jesus’ voice calling
to each of us through her words.
See you in worship,
Pastor Lisa
Do no harm. Do good. Stay in love with God.—John Wesley

EVENTS & PRAYERS
Laity Sunday,
August 28, 2016
“You don’t have to be a pastor to be
in ministry.”
Since the days of the circuit riders, the
laity (non-clergy) of the church have had a great role in
the ministry of the Methodist church. This year, in accordance with a tradition started in 1928, we will observe Laity Sunday on August 28th.
Officially, the Methodist Church observes this day “to
emphasize the place that lay members have in the total
life and work of the church," “to recognize the work
and mission of all laity – not only within the walls of the
church, but in everyday lives,” and “to provide lay people with the opportunity to witness to their faith in Jesus
Christ and their commitment to his mission in the
world.”

Brent Cole, and Lori McLeod.
Those who are homeless, hungry and in need.
Those who are fleeing war torn countries.
Those suffering from depression and/or
grief.
If you’d like to see a complete list of those in need of
prayer, please pick up a Care List from either of the
church buildings.
This day is meant to be a celebration of all of the wonderful work of all of our people – the ways you serve
the Lord in this church, your families, and our community. Whether you realize it or not, YOU are an important part of our ministry!
Our worship service for August 28th will be planned
and led by YOU, the people! Much like our special
youth-led services, those who want to be involved will
get to prepare and execute the entire program for that
Sunday morning. You pick the songs, readings, and service order. You write the prayers, deliver the sermon,
and lead the children’s time. We need lots of volunteers
for all kinds of roles – planning, praying, reading, singing, computer slides, ushers, and more!
If you’re feeling called to share your faith, if you’re curious what goes into a Sunday service, or even if you’re a
little unsure but still interested, please stay for a meeting
after worship on Sunday, August 7th. Contact Anna
Bagley with questions or ideas.

MUSIC MINISTRY
Music is good for the soul!
Wednesday,
August 24th at 6 p.m.
“It is good to praise the Lord and make music to Your
name, O Most High!” - Psalm 92:1
ANYONE interested in singing with the adult choir
this school year is welcome at a prayer and planning
potluck dinner on Wednesday, August 24th at 6 pm
in the Lovell Building. Rehearsals will officially resume on Wednesday, August 31st at 6:30 in the
Sanctuary.
EVERYONE is welcome to join us in making a joyful noise to the Lord – no experience necessary, no
audition required. We meet Wednesday evenings at
6:30 and Sunday mornings at 10:00. We want you
once a month or every week – whatever your life
allows! *Contact Anna Bagley (515-708-1047, [email protected])
If you’ve ever had an interest in singing or
playing an instrument for worship, but can’t
make a weekly commitment to choir practices or times, we still want to hear your gift of
music! Contact Anna Bagley (see email in
other articles on page). Anna is willing to
work with anyone who wants to share their
gift of music with the congregation—for
Worship on Sunday morning, or for special
services throughout the year!
Children’s Choir begins
Sunday, Aug. 21st at 11:30 a.m.
All preschool – 5th grade students are invited
to join Mrs. Hitt to sing and praise the
Lord! We will meet in the choir room
(basement of the sanctuary) for a short rehearsal after the 10:30 worship service each
Sunday beginning August 21st. Parents are
welcome to come and watch or to head to the
Lovell Building for some coffee while the kids
practice. Contact Leslie Hitt (970-618-6084)
or Anna Bagley ([email protected]) for
more information or to volunteer to help!
Have we not used your favorite hymn for a while? Is there a song from your Sunday School days that you’ve been longing to sing? Have you been moved to worship in your car by a song on K-Love radio? Do you have a suggestion for a special solo or choir piece? Please write down any song requests (or even partial lyrics
– Anna’s got resources!) on any piece of paper and leave them in the music box by
the office in the Lovell Building!

MISSIONS & MORE
Open Cupboard Food Pantry Update!
Mission committee is heading up
our collection of items for families/schools in need in our district!
Pick up a list at church today and
bring your items to worship between now and August 21st!
Items needed include:
Kleenex, Dry Erase Markers, #2
Pencils, Spiral-bound notebooks,
Composition books, and erasers.
The Open Cupboard Food Pantry that we as a church run, is
the proud recipient of a $5,000 grant from the AV Hunter
Trust! Since each of you are committed to donating food and
hygiene products and more, AND are continuing to literally
feed a need in our community, the AV Hunter Trust has committed to help us out monetarily! When you see Shirley LeMoine, tell her thank you for her dedication in writing this grant.
When you see others donating, tell them thank you as well! We
are making a difference in Rifle and the people who drive
through. Thank you to each of you for continuing to donate
and be the hands and feet of Christ to those in need!
Blessings, Pastor Lisa
South Dakota Mission Trip Report
June 5th, our mission team left for South Dakota for three days of work
at Storm Mountain Retreat Center. The team arrived Sunday evening in
two vehicles and embarked on their adventure. Thanks to everyone
who donated in order to make the trip a giant success!
Day 2 the team was tasked with staining siding for some of the buildings. All the siding was in a large stack and the team set to work staining all day long. With a short break
for lunch, the team was still able to do all 130, 10-14 ft. long boards. That afternoon when all the work
was complete, the swimming hole was the place to be, followed by supper and board games.
Day 3 the team was given a new task: stain the deck railings and posts of one of the lodges. The crew set
to work and did several hours of staining. Lunch time provided a break and an opportunity to go sightseeing. The rest of the day was spent out and about at Crazy Horse National Monument, Mount Rushmore, and some dinner out.
Day 4 the team finished staining the deck, all the way around the lodge and still time for a late afternoon
dip at the swimming hole again!
Day 5 the team had a quick breakfast and hit the road for the journey home! With the 7of us, we provided nearly 140 hours of service, saving the camp nearly $1400!
