The Employees’ Charitable
Fund Campaign: Aligned
with our IBM Values.
IBM has developed a thoughtful, comprehensive
approach to corporate citizenship that we believe
aligns with IBM’s values and maximizes the impact
we can make as a global enterprise. We focus on
specific societal issues, including the environment,
community economic development, education,
health, literacy, language and culture.
in the On Demand Community to apply for an IBM
Community Grant in support of your favorite charity.
More information about all of your community
outreach options can be found on the Corporate
Citizenship and Corporate affairs page on W3.
In Canada, we contribute to this approach through
the many Citizenship programs that support our
communities where we can have the greatest impact.
Thank you for your continued support of IBM’s
Citizenship efforts, particularly ECF. I’m very proud
to be counted among the many IBMers who made a
donation through ECF in 2012.
We’re fortunate to have a number of different
ways you can show your community how much
#IBMersCARE. As you will see throughout this
report, participating in the Employees’ Charitable
Fund Campaign with a donation is an excellent way
to lend your support to the charity or charities you
choose.

IBM believes that a company
culture based on core values
not only helps our business,
but also defines the role that
we can and should play in
society.

Thank you for supporting
ECF and making the 2012
fundraising campaign a
success!
The headline says it all - we surpassed our
fundraising goal! And it happened because
of your hard work. Success wasn’t only
measured in dollars raised but also fun,
employee engagement and volunteerism.
Without
your
involvement
and
commitment, our ECF campaign would
not be one of the largest, most successful,
national employee campaigns in Canada.
Your engagement, in every location and
function, ensures our campaign reaches the
entire IBM Canada team coast to coast.
Thank you for everything you have done
throughout our campaign.

Employees’ Charitable Fund Governance:
The Employees’ Charitable Fund was established to provide an avenue for IBM
employees and retirees to contribute financially to the registered Canadian charities of
their choice through convenient payroll deductions or one time payments.
The Employees’ Charitable Fund is a registered Canadian charity (CRA#
118966100RR0001) and as such follows Government of Canada guidelines and
legislation. ECF is structured with a Board of Directors who oversee the governance of
both the fund and campaign, and an ECF Cabinet, who plan and execute the annual
campaign.
Donation Collection and Disbursement
Payroll contributions are held in trust by IBM at Pace Credit Union throughout the
year. These funds are invested in modest guaranteed vehicles (T-bills, short term GICs
etc.). The gains generated by these investments are used by the Employees’ Charitable
Fund to react to such things as natural disaster relief, as incentives during the ECF
campaign (eg. contest prizes).
100 percent of donations are disbursed to the charity(s) IBMers choose by the United
Way of Toronto, a paid service provider. IBM Canada Ltd. pays all fees associated with
the collection and disbursement of your donations.
Donations made via one time credit card/payroll deduction in October 2012 were
disbursed to the charity(s) IBMers chose in February 2013. Donations collected via biweekly payroll deductions (over 26 pay periods) are disbursed 3 times annually in the
year following the campaign. For example donations committed during the 2012 ECF
Campaign are collected throughout 2013 and disbursed in May, August, and February
(2014).

Meet Deanna Drschiwiski
(Western Canada)
Food banks turn every $1 into $3 making you donations
go further. A dollar a day for one year will provide over
$1,000 of food to hungry families in your community.
Deanna Drschiwiski is the founder of the VIATeC Food Bank
Challenge. This November marks the 11th year of the drive. It
has raised over $1,000,000 dollars to date.
Deanna started the food drive back in 2002 as an internal event
for a small Victoria technology company called Pure Edge
Solutions. PureEdge was acquired by IBM in 2005. The food drive
was successful – they raised over 500 lbs of food – and it was so
much fun that the following year they decided to challenge other
technology companies to participate. Ten of them did, and the
VIATeC Food Bank Challenge was born. That year they raised
over 10,000 lbs of food.
Since then, over 40 companies have participated in the food drive.
As the number of participants grew, the focus of the drive shifted
– from collecting food donations to collecting financial donations.
Food banks can do more with the money than you can at the
grocery store. They have three times the purchasing power of an
individual because most food producers sell to them at cost.

HERO
Meet Sonny D’Mello
(GTA)
Just a dollar-a-day provides books, software licenses,
and assistive walkers, for seniors taking part in courses
like “Senior’s IT Smarts” at the Newmarket Public
Library.
Sonny D’Mello conducted education sessions for senior citizens at
the Newmarket Public Library in honor of our 2011 Centennial
Celebration of Service. Sonny applies patience and skills as he
continues to offer the Senior IT Smart’s Program even though our
formal day of service activities have ended.
Says D’Mello, “Representing IBM any and everywhere, especially
during my IT educations sessions for senior citizens throughout
the GTA, brings me a tremendous amount of gratification and
fulfillment. I feel blessed to have been given the opportunity to
serve. Having IBM encourage volunteering within the community
is an added bonus. Simply put, I am so happy and proud to be
an IBM’er.”
For 100 years, service and volunteerism have been essential elements
of what it means to be an IBMer. Creating a culture of service
has always been a central part of IBM’s corporate citizenship
efforts, but it’s IBMers like Sonny who bring this philosophy to
life by expressing IBM’s brand and values to our communities.
Thank you, Sonny, for applying your skills in a meaningful way to
enhance the lives senior citizens in your community.

can take part in the Friendship Builder program to learn
social thinking and social skills in a nurturing, bullyfree environment.
Ability Online is a free, monitored & secure online community
that welcomes kids, teens & young adults of all abilities. The
program offers assistance to different age groups and provides
specialized tools to help address transitional needs and challenges.
Christine Haeberlin has been volunteering with Ability Online
for 12 years; most recently as a Board of Director member. She
believes in the value of this program and making a positive
difference in the lives of Ability Online “kids”.

Meet Shelley Lambert
(Ottawa)
A dollar-a-day for a month buys enough cover crop seed
to help improve the soil quality of multiple incubator
farms across Ottawa to ensure local food security.
Shelley Lambert volunteers with the Just Food’s Greens Creek
Farm project converting the 75 acre NCC property into an series
of demonstration gardens and food production and preservation
areas.
Just Food is a non-profit organization whose mission is to ensure
Ottawa (and other communities around the country) are food
secure. Food security exists when all people, at all times, have
physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious
food to meet their dietary needs, as well as to culturally acceptable
food preferences for an active and healthy life.
Shelley started volunteering where she grew up, in Saskatchewan,
and says, “I grew up on a farm in a fairly remote place far away
from larger cities. In the country, it is not called volunteering;
it is called helping your neighbours. In the city, we have to call
it volunteering, because we often don’t know our neighbours.
You definitely know more about your neighbours when you are
shoulder to shoulder with them in service.”

Meet Véronique Roy
(Quebec)
A dollar-a-day for a year can provide programs intended
to encourage interest in math and science with the
supplies needed for students to explore their creativity.
Véronique Roy has been working for IBM for the past 5 years
and I’ve been volunteering since, well, forever....from elementary
school, when as a student, she was helping younger students in
sciences and languages, to University, where she was a tutor and
worked for the universities newspaper. Volunteering always been
a part of who she is, especially in education.
For the past two years, Véronique has been making a difference
in lives of grade school students by visiting grade eight classes to
conduct a session intended to encourage the students to stay in
school. The program, simply named “Science”, was inspired by
Engineers Week.
She says, “IBM allows me and other IBMers to go into these
schools and we know we make a difference, by the feedback we
are getting from the students. We are working with local schools &
colleges, from elementary to University with a common message
to everyone: be creative, be innovative, stay in school, you are our
future. It sounds cheesy, but that is basically what we try to do
since the drop out rates are so high, especially in high-schools.”
Because of volunteers like Véronique, over 1500 students a year
see the importance of staying in school and exploring their
creativity.

Meet Cheryl Steadman
(Eastern Canada)
With just a dollar-a-day for a month, you can help provide
a week’s worth of refreshments for the donors in Saint
John to re-hydrate following their blood donation.
Cheryl Steadman contributes to her community by being a regular
weekly donor of plasma with Canadian Blood Services. So far in
2012, Cheryl has made 18 donations of plasma. Says Steadman,
“It’s just something that I schedule on my calendar each week. I
figure it’s desperately needed, I’m healthy and able to donate, so why
wouldn’t I?” In addition to donating plasma, Cheryl dedicates her
efforts to raising awareness for donations of blood, plasma, platelets,
marrow, stem cells as well as highlighting the importance of organ
and tissue donation. “There are over 3,000 Canadians awaiting an
organ or tissue transplant right now. The more awareness we can
raise, the more people we can get to sign their organ donor cards,
the fewer Canadians need to die needlessly,” says Steadman.
Cheryl recently helped to organize a donor awareness campaign
in Saint John by attempting to break the Guinness Book record for
the most people to assemble into the shape of an awareness ribbon.
“We didn’t get the number of people we needed to break the record
this time, but we did have about 400 very enthusiastic people come
out who outlined the shape of the ribbon beautifully. For the first
year’s attempt, we were very pleased, and we achieved our main
goal of raising awareness through the publicity we received.”
