Traditional Community Dances
Barn/Farm murals on the wall
Circles, squares, whole sets and contras
- find out about these centuries-old
forms of community group dance that
were a common part of social gatherings have become popular all over the
United States, including monthly
dances in our area. Learn the basic figures and structure of this fun, friendly
activity.
No fancy footwork required. The basic step is simply walking. If you can count, and you know left
from right, you are ready to
dance! Instruction will be given by
Marcia McKenzie, a local-area musician,
dancer and dance-caller. Adults of all
ages are encouraged to attend although anyone age 9 and up should be
able to follow the instructions. No prior
dance experience is necessary or assumed. No need to sign up with a partner as the dances often involve changing partners anyway.
More Kids Nights Out are in
the formative stages
Colonial Days, a recent Kid’s Night
Out, the participants made corn husk
dolls, baked corn bread using an old
recipe, played colonial game - all
worked by kerosene lamp light.
The Kids Night Out programs gives
parents an opportunity to have a
“date night” to go to dinner and leave
the kids at Bower Center to make fun
projects between 6pm and 8. Small
fee varies with project.

Clawhammer Banjo
for Beginners
Learn the rhythmic old-time clawhammer, or frailing, style of banjo playing
that predates bluegrass - perfect for
backing up the fiddle or accompanying
yourself on songs like “Oh Susanna” or
“This Land is Your Land.” Taught by
local-area musician Marcia McKenzie,
classes will cover the right-hand
technique, several tunings and their
associated chords, and a few simple
melodies. Some tablature will be
provided, along with instruction on how
to read it; however, the focus will be on
learning by ear, and participants are
encouraged to bring a recording device
provide their own
and will need to
playable banjo. Also bring a capo and
tuner (if you don’t know what these are,
these will be discussed in the first class)
and your enthusiasm to learn this fun
and versatile instrument.

WRITE NOW
What is WRITE NOW? Write Now! is a
Bedford group of writers who meet at
the Bower Center at 7 p.m. on the third
Thursday of each month to share our
enthusiasm for writing. We are a very
mixed group, most have never
been published, and we are young and
older, male and female, with varied
backgrounds. It is a very social group,
with emphasis on creativity and free
expression.
Little Hay Bale
by Nancy Fischer
He rolled two times and then,
“Thwack!” he was bumping into a tree.
He thought, “I’ve never been a circle
before, I feel all tight and not nimble at
all”.
Yesterday he was a long swath of grass
all tasseled and windblown.
Sometime between then and now, the
hay baler had got him and rolled him up
snug!
He sat next to his tree getting used to
his new shape.
There were other bales just like him,
but not being able to wave anymore,
He sat watching the clouds shadow
over the new rolled bales, and slip into
the blue.
The sun and the tree created a lacy
umbrella casting shade which
comforted him.
As the day progressed the sun blessed
him and warmed his round body into
slumber.
At evening a cool breeze tickled his
edges and he sneezed into wakefulness.
The hay baler had tricked him again!
He was nestled in with a long line of
bales rolled tight full of their own
spring time song.
He whispered: “My name is Hay!
What’s yours?”
You may wonder how he knew his
name.
He was no dumb country boy bale of
hay!
August 2014
He had been paying attention as he
danced in the wind and soaked up the
rain
And dried warm from the sun.
He had heard the field hands holler:
Hey, wha’cha’ got for lunch?
Hey, did you buy the twelve pack? Hey,
watch where you’re driving that thing!
Little bale of hay deduced that everyone was named ‘Hay’!
And so it must have been!
Because in reply to his timid question,
he heard,
“Hey! My name is Hay too! My name is
Hay! My name is Hay!”
Thusly they clamored until the cows
found their peaceful resting spot,
And another day on the gentle hills
rolled into night.
Below is a brief excerpt from a novel
about a chain of car dealerships John
Ketwig is writing.
“We’re so eager to embrace the negatives. Working with the public is so
hard; they’re all so demanding; they
don’t understand what we do here; it's
so easy to say they’re asses and
jerks. It’s an epidemic, and yet it doesn’t make sense, and it really isn’t
true. A customer wants to find a place
where he or she can feel comfortable. They want to find sincere people
and realistic policies, convenience and
fairness. The minute we let ourselves
see them as jerks we’ve lost all those
things, and they’ll sense it and start
looking for another place to spend their
money. It seems so obvious, but the
other mindset is the most common. To be honest, folks, and I would
appreciate it if these comments stay in
this room, the other Champion stores
have got it bad, and my job is to turn
them around. The only way we’re ever
going to be what Senior is hoping for
will be if we can overcome that pessimism, and that’s the job I’ve taken
on. Frankly, I never thought it would
be so big, so hard. The anger and bitterness are so engrained, so universal, I
don’t know if I can ever overcome
Page 6
it. Junior, Bat, Ronnie, you charge my
batteries. I come out here to refresh
myself, to dream the dream for a few
minutes. What you’re doing is right,
and I’m overjoyed that Liz recognized
it. You’re right, and you’re special, but
don’t ever imagine that the other guys
aren’t out to cut you up like fresh
meat. This is the antithesis of most
businesses in America today, and no
one wants to look into a mirror and see
the warts on their nose. No one ever
asks the mirror, mirror on the wall,
‘Who’s the un-fairest of us all?’ As an
example, you’re also a target. I see it
every day. They’ll throw all their weapons at you, and businesses like
you. Computer reports! God knows
we never heard about disappearing rain
forests before the computer was invented to save paper! Fax machines
and cell phones, e-mails and Excel
spread sheets, and you guys have the
guts to measure your success by the
smile on a customer’s face! This is the
most profitable dealership in the
Champion Auto Group, and everybody
hates you for it, and that’s because
they think you’re doing something evil
and underhanded. The truth is, they
rush to that conclusion because the
mean-spirited, underhanded, evil
methods are their natural ways, and
they’ve lost all reference to your
way.” I saw the eyes looking at me
from every corner of the room, and the
jaws dropping. I let the sermon end,
the outpouring, whatever it was, and
Junior thanked me, and we all went off
to lunch in a cozy oak and ferns restaurant as the moment evaporated.
