The Meadows would like to
welcome Vera Goedken to our
Community. Vera was born on July
29, 1933 in Dyersville, Iowa. At
age three, her family moved to
Manchester where she has resided
ever since. She attended St Mary’s
School until 9th grade, then
completed her education at
Manchester High School.
After graduating, Vera began working for Francis
Gosling, CPA (now known as Gosling and Co. PC
CPA’s) as his assistant. She conducted bookkeeping
and auditing for 44 years.
For many years, Vera was a member of a local
bowling team as well as the Business and Professional
Women’s Club from Manchester. Also, Vera has
knitted for the past 60 years. She continues to knit
baby caps for newborns, donating them to our local
hospital, Regional Medical Center. Throughout her
life, Vera has enjoyed traveling to many places. Vera’s
goal was to take at least one trip per year resulting in
visiting the majority of the states throughout the
U.S.A.! Some of her favorite trips include traveling to
Europe and England.
Please help us welcome Vera to the Meadows!
Also, we wish to
welcome, Bob and
Lois Johnson to
The Meadows!
Bob Johnson was
born May 14,
1925. He was
raised and
educated in both
Delaware and
Buchanan Counties. Bob attended country school in
rural Manchester and graduated from Winthrop
high school. Lois was born September 13, 1924.
She was raised and educated in Edgewood, Iowa.
Lois recalls walking 1 1/2 miles to Lodomillo
Country school.
Bob and Lois were married on February 27, 1946 at
First Lutheran Church in Manchester. Together
they raised five children Arthur, Carl, Karen
(Thomas), Lynn and Roger. On their farm in rural
Manchester, the Johnson family raised
chickens, Holstein dairy cows, hogs and cultivated
corn, oats and alfalfa crops. In addition to farming,
Bob served in the United States Army as an
Administrative Personnel Technician. Also, he
served on The Delaware County Pork Producer
board, West Delaware Schools (as one of the original members) and the Dundee school board. Lois

their trips to Hawaii, Jamaica and Sweden! Please
join us in welcoming Bob and Lois to The Meadows!
The Meadows would like to

anniversary! Bud and Esther were
married on May 5, 1959 at St. Paul’s

joy and companionship. God Bless you both!

CINCO DE MAYO
Cinco De Mayo is Spanish for
the 5th of May. Cinco De Mayo
commemorates the Mexican Army’s
defeat of the French forces on May 5,
1862, in the Battle of Puebla. Celebrate with
us by wearing your bright colorful
clothing, and/or sombreros if you
have them. At our noon meal, we
will enjoy chips, salsa &
guacamole dip paired with
margaritas or Mexican beer.
RIGHT: Our first crop has been
planted! We seized a fairly
warm sunny Saturday to plant
our two raised garden beds.
The group planted
radishes and onions!
The gardens have
been carefully maintained and watered.
We’re anticipating
our fresh harvest in
May!
ABOVE & RIGHT: After a post-ponement due to high winds, we
were finally able to make a visit to the FarmTek green houses. Our
tour guide, Gabe led us through their hydroponic,
aquaponic and aeroponic green houses. It was an
intriguing, informational and fun
afternoon for all!
LEFT: We started
the humor month
of April, with a mis
-matched day of
fun! That same
afternoon, we
played backwards
Bingo (OGNIB)!
During the entire
month we posted a
“Joke of Day” in
the morning. The
answers to the joke
were read during
the lunch hour.
Laughter brings joy
to all and we
shared a lot of both
in April!
