James Carville and Mary Matalin get in a ‘heated’ debate over room
temperature in new TV Spots
New Mitsubishi Electric Cooling & Heating ad campaign shows the married couple
humorously arguing over home’s HVAC
SUWANEE, Ga., August 23, 2012 – Well known for disagreeing on almost everything,
media personalities James Carville and Mary Matalin (below) will soon be seen on TVs
across the country battling over whether to keep their traditional cooling and heating
system on a comfortable temperature or one that saves money.
In the TV spots, a Mitsubishi Electric Cooling & Heating (Mitsubishi Electric) ductless
HVAC system is shown as the solution for homeowners who want to both cut electricity
costs and increase comfort.
The TV spots will debut Aug. 27, appearing on CNN, Fox News and during ABC and
CBS convention nights.
One of the spots for Mitsubishi Electric shows costconscious Matalin telling comfort-focused Carville that he
can change the thermostat if he can say “New Orleans”,
instead of the native New Orleans pronunciation of
“Nawlins.” The other spot shows them verbally battling
by using references to famous quotes.
When Carville asks Matalin why she changed the temperature, she responds, “I thought
you were for change.” He snaps back, “The issue in this house is my comfort.” Matalin
fires back, “It’s the energy bill, stupid.”

The new TV spots take Mitsubishi Electric’s “Split Personality” campaign to the next
level. In earlier commercials, a single homeowner battles his or her alter ego between
being comfortable or saving money. With this new commercial, Mitsubishi Electric knew
the couple would be the perfect first duo to bring the cost versus comfort struggle to life.
“We knew, taking our ‘Split Personality’ campaign from showing one homeowner
battling with his or her alter ego to a couple battling each other, we had to find spouses
who truly served as each other’s opposites,” explained Joe Mastroianni, chief marketing
officer for Mitsubishi Electric Cooling & Heating. “Carville and Matalin not only top the
list of great couple debaters, but they’re also entertaining to watch and naturally laughout-loud funny.”
James Carville is a political consultant and national commentator. A best-selling author,
Carville was a lead strategist for the presidential campaign of then-Arkansas Governor
Bill Clinton. He is now a contributor to CNN.
Carville is married to Mary Matalin, who served under President Ronald Reagan, was
campaign director for President-elect George H.W. Bush, an assistant to President
George W. Bush and a counselor to Vice President Dick Cheney. Carville and Matalin
live in New Orleans with their two daughters.
