Pastor’s Column
Dear Parishioners,
The month of November is dedicated to all of the faithful departed, especially those who are in Purgatory. It is a very noteworthy and important practice to fondly remember our brothers and sisters who have died and await their entrance into
Heaven. We can help these poor souls with our daily prayers,
our sufferings, our good works, our masses, our Holy Communions, and the indulgences we obtain for them. Remember
that an indulgence is the remission of the temporal punishment
due to forgiven sins. We can either receive a partial indulgence or a plenary indulgence for ourselves or for a soul in
Purgatory. By applying an indulgence for a deceased soul we
can quickly release that person from the satisfaction owed to
God because of their sins. By obtaining a plenary indulgence,
we essentially give the soul in the afterlife a free ticket to
heaven. All of the atonement needed to address the effects of
that soul’s sins is completely blotted out.
Please remember that a plenary indulgence is not magic. It
comes from the spiritual treasures of the Holy Father. Indulgences are typically attached to certain pious devotions and
actions, such as making the Stations of the Cross, prayer before a holy crucifix, saying the Holy Rosary devoutly, attending a Parish Mission, visiting certain sacred relics of the saints,
visiting Shrines or Churches demarcated by the pope or local
bishop as indulgence sites. Obviously, this list is not exhaustive. You can check The Enchiridion Of Indulgences from a
number of websites by going to Google.com.
In order to obtain a plenary indulgence, the following must
take place: 1. Perform the devotional act or prayer attached to
the indulgence; 2. Pray for the Pope’s intentions by saying
either the Apostles’ Creed or an Our Father or Hail Mary; 3.
Go to Confession; 4. Receive Holy Communion; 5. Make
every effort that day you perform the indulgence prayer or
action to be totally detached from sin! That is the hardest part.
And we can receive only one plenary indulgence per day.
And now some funnies:
#1 - Two Christians have lived very good, and also very
healthy lives. They die, and go to heaven. As they are walking
along, marveling at the paradise around them, one turns to the
other and says "Wow. I never knew heaven was going to be as
good as this!"
"Yeah", says the other. "And just think, if we hadn't eaten
all that oat bran we could have got here ten years sooner."
#2 – Father O’Connor was an avid golfer. After a beautiful
day of golfing with his buddies, he went inside the church to
pray and found himself wondering whether there were any golf
courses in Heaven. He even began to ask the question in his
prayers. The next, in answer to his prayers, he received a direct
answer from on high.
"Yes," said the Heavenly messenger, "There are many excellent golf courses in Heaven. The greens are always in first
class condition, the weather is always perfect and you always
get to play with the very nicest people."
"Oh, thank you," said the pastor, "That really is marvelous
news."
"Yes, isn't it?" replied the messenger, "And we've got you
down for a foursome next Saturday."
#3 - Recently a teacher, a garbage collector, and a lawyer wound up
together at the Pearly Gates. St. Peter informed them that in order to
get into Heaven, they would each have to answer one question.
St. Peter addressed the teacher and asked, "What was the name of
the ship that crashed into the iceberg? They just made a movie about
it." The teacher answered quickly, "That would be the Titanic." St.
Peter let him through the gate.
St. Peter turned to the garbage man and, figuring Heaven didn't
REALLY need all the odors that this guy would bring with him, decided to make the question a little harder: "How many people died on
the ship?" Fortunately for him, the trash man had just seen the movie
and answered, "About 1,500." "That's right! You may enter."
St. Peter then turned to the lawyer. "Name them."
#4 - One bright, beautiful Sunday morning, everyone in tiny Jonestown wakes up early and goes to their local church. Before the service starts, the townspeople sit in their pews and talk about their lives
and their families. Suddenly, at the altar, Satan appears!! Everyone
starts screaming and running for the front entrance, trampling each
other in their determined efforts to get away from Evil Incarnate.
Soon, everyone is evacuated from the church except for one man,
who sit calmly in his pew, seemingly oblivious to the fact that God's
ultimate enemy is in his presence. This confuses Satan a bit. Satan
walks up to the man and says, "Hey, don't you know who I am?" The
man says, "Yep, sure do."
Satan says, "Well, aren't you afraid of me?" The man says,
"Nope, sure ain't."
Satan, perturbed, says, "And why aren't you afraid of me?" The
man says, "Well, I've been married to your sister for 25 years."
