The word "passion" connotes deep, focused engagement. It also relates to passivity, interestingly. The deeply passionate person in the Gospel narrative from Luke is Jesus. He
appears passive, but he is not. He is wholly self-possessed and wholly present for the one
day that begins on Thursday evening at his last meal with his apostles and ends with his
burial before sunset the next day. Then follows the long Sabbath silence.
The narrative of the Passion is read whole and without pause on the Palm Sunday of
the Passion. This story, found in each of the Gospels, is unchanging. We are the ones who change. Each
year, we bring ourselves with another year's history to hear and heed the story we so badly need. Life has
its way with us, and we look again to the Passion narratives to learn to follow.

READINGS FOR THE WEEK
PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD
PALMS AND GLORY
Here we stand, once again, holding high our palm branches
to be blessed. With the crowd in the Gospel story, we proclaim,
"Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord." Unlike those people in the Gospel who greeted Jesus, we know
where this is going. We know that we are included in the
crowds who greeted Jesus with joy, and in the same crowds
who one week later would shout, "Crucify him!" We live into
the story of Christ's glory and his suffering.
SUFFERING AND REDEMPTION
The reading of the Passion is long and hard to
hear. Beginning with the Last Supper, the Passover meal in which Jesus gives himself to us in
the bread and wine, through the agonizing prayer
in the garden, to the trial, condemnation, and
finally the crucifixion, we stand, patiently listening and wondering how we fit into this story.
Although told in the past tense, we hear this story in the present
tense, knowing that this is our story, one in which we suffer
with our crucified Lord. We know also that this will lead to the
Resurrection, but for now, we experience the grief and sadness
that will be repeated in the rituals later this week: the Mass of
Holy Thursday, the service of Good Friday with the veneration
of the cross, and the quiet and thoughtful time of Holy Saturday
leading to the glorious Easter Vigil. We view Jesus' suffering
through the eyes of the women of Galilee as well as the guards
and other disciples who watch from a distance. We have a
glimpse of our redemption in the conversation of Jesus with
"the good thief." Our hearts are broken. We finally recognize
the effects of our sinfulness and the great gift that Jesus has
given us in the Eucharist and in his death. That recognition can
lead us truly to redemption as we contemplate its implication in
our lives. We look forward to the Resurrection with eager anticipation of our salvation.

Misericordiae Vultus: The Face of Mercy is Pope Francis' official decree announcing this Jubilee Year
of Mercy. But Francis had already declared that Jesus "has shown the face of God's mercy" back in 2013 on
his first Palm Sunday as pope. Francis described Luke's account of Jesus' entrance into Jerusalem: "Crowds,
celebrating, praise, blessing, peace: joy fills the air. Jesus has awakened great hopes, especially in the hearts
of the simple, the humble, the poor, the forgotten, those who do not matter in the eyes of the world. He understands human sufferings . . . has bent down to heal body and soul." Entering Jerusalem, Jesus looks at all of us with love, Francis
continued, at our sicknesses and sins. "A beautiful scene, full of light--the light of the love of Jesus" (Pope Francis, Palm Sunday
homily, March 24, 2013). May this Jubilee Year's Holy Week and Triduum make us Jesus' own light-bearers and love-givers to all
who long to see the Face of Mercy.

Ramos de la Pasión del Señor.
El Señor me ayuda, por eso no quedaré confundido. ‐‐ Isaías 50:7a Estimados Feligreses,
La palabra "pasión" conlleva un profundo y determinado compromiso. Pero es interesante que también tiene relación a la pasividad. La persona profundamente apasionada del
relato evangélico de Lucas es Jesús. Parece pasivo pero no lo es. Está totalmente consciente
de sí mismo y totalmente presente al día que comienza el jueves por la noche en su última
cena con los apóstoles y termina con su entierro antes de la puesta del sol el día siguiente.
Entonces le sigue el largo silencio del sábado.
El relato de la pasión se lee entero y sin pausa el Domingo de Ramos en la Pasión. Esta
historia, que se encuentra en cada uno de los evangelios, no cambia. Somos nosotros los que cambiamos. Cada año, nos presentamos con otro año de historia para escuchar y hacerle caso a esta historia que tanta
falta nos hace. La vida nos traquetea y de nuevo volvemos a los relatos de la Pasión para aprender a seguirle.

RAMOS Y GLORIA
Aquí estamos, una vez más, sosteniendo a lo alto nuestras
ramos y palmas para que sean bendecidos. Junto a la multitud
de la historia del Evangelio, proclamamos: "Bendito el que
viene en nombre del Señor". Pero a diferencia de esas personas
del Evangelio, que vitoreaban a Jesús, sabemos el resto de la
historia. Sabemos que estamos dentro de la multitud que alegremente saludó a Jesús, y en la misma multitud que una semana después a gritos pediría que lo "crucificaran". Vivimos dentro de la historia tanto la gloria de Cristo como su sufrimiento.

SUFRIMIENTO Y REDENCIÓN
La proclamación de la Pasión es larga y difícil de
escuchar. Empezando con la Última Cena, la cena
pascual en la que Jesús se nos ofrece a nosotros en la
forma del pan y el vino, de la oración agonizante en
el jardín de los olivos al juicio, la sentencia y finalmente la crucifixión, estamos de pie pacientemente
escuchando y preguntándonos nuestro papel en esta historia.
Aunque narrada en tiempo pasado, escuchamos esta historia en
tiempo presente, sabiendo que esta es nuestra historia, una en la
que sufrimos junto con nuestro Señor crucificado. También
sabemos que esto nos llevará a la Resurrección, pero por ahora,
tenemos la experiencia del dolor y duelo que se repetirán en los
rituales más adelante esta semana: la Misa del Jueves Santo, el
servicio del Viernes Santo con la veneración de la Cruz y la
soledad y reflexión del Sábado Santo guiándonos a la Vigilia
Pascual. Vemos el sufrimiento de Jesús a través de los ojos de
las mujeres de Galilea, los soldados y otros de los discípulos
que veían desde lejos. Tenemos un vistazo de nuestra redención
en la conversación de Jesús con "el buen ladrón". Nuestros corazones están rotos. Por último reconocemos los efectos de
nuestros pecados y el gran don que Jesús nos dio en la Eucaristía y en su muerte. Y este reconocer pueden guiarnos verdaderamente a la redención mientras contemplamos su implicación
en nuestras vidas. Esperamos la Resurrección con una gran
expectativa de nuestra salvación.

El Señor me ayuda, por eso no quedaré confundido. ‐‐ Isaías 50:7a AÑO JUBILAR DE LA MISERICORDIA ‐ DOMINGO DE RAMOS DE LA PASIÓN DEL SEÑOR.
Misericordiae Vultus: El rosto de la Misericordia es el documento oficial (en este caso una Bula papal) anunciando este Año Jubilar de la Misericordia. Sin embargo, el Domingo de Ramos de 2013, el Papa Francisco
había anunciado que "Jesús ha mostrado el rostro de la misericordia de Dios". El Papa Francisco describe la
historia del Evangelio de Lucas donde Jesús entra en Jerusalén así: "Gentío, fiesta, alabanza, bendición, paz.
Se respira un clima de alegría. Jesús ha despertado en el corazón tantas esperanzas, sobre todo entre la gente
humilde, simple, pobre, olvidada, esa que no cuenta a los ojos del mundo. Él ha sabido comprender las miserias humanas, ha mostrado el rostro de misericordia de Dios y se ha inclinado para curar el cuerpo y el alma". El Papa Francisco sigue diciendo que Jesús al
entrar a Jerusalén mira a todos con amor en nuestras debilidades y pecados. "Es una bella escena, llena de luz - la luz del amor de
Jesús, de su corazón -, de alegría, de fiesta" (Papa Francisco, homilía del Domingo de Ramos, 24 de marzo de 2013). ¡Qué la Semana Santa y Triduo Pascual de este Año Jubilar de la Misericordia nos hagan portadores de la luz de Jesús y mensajeros de amor a
todos los que anhelan ver El rostro de la Misericordia!

One Who Serves
In the long form of the Passion from Luke’s Gospel, Jesus refers to himself as “the one who
serves” (Luke 22:27). This reminds me of today’s second reading from Paul’s letter to the Philippians. He says that Christ “emptied himself, taking the form of a slave” (Philippians 2:7). Jesus is not
just being humble here. He gives us an example of how far God will go in loving humanity. I suspect the apostles were confused when Jesus talked this way. Yet he tells them to be like a servant—expect little reward for what you do for others. Now the apostles might have thought, “Sure, I
can do that. I’ll preach about the Kingdom of God for free. Then I’ll really look important and holy.” So Jesus reminds them that the
world looks at the person being served as more important than the servant. But he is one who serves. and if the apostles are to be
leaders of the church they will need to be servants, too. Why? Because that is how God comes to the people. In the Passion according to Luke, Jesus heals one of the men sent to arrest him. Barabbas, a murderer, is set free so Jesus can be crucified. As he is led to the cross, he consoles the women who weep for him. And even on the cross, he is the suffering servant who
asks the Father to forgive those who are killing him. With the example of service that Jesus shows toward those who put him to death, can we at least be “one who serves” those around
us? Can we at least forgive those who hurt us—maybe even pray for our leaders, especially the ones with whom we disagree.
