The yz'rst Traviata
lis Perfo rm ance NIade R idicul ous by

T WA S in Venice that "La
Traviata" rece ived its first performance on March 6, 1 ~ S 3. Verdi
a t t he time wrote dolefu lly to his
fri end a nd pu pil, Muzio, "Travi ata
I
last night m ade a fiasco . I s the fa ul t
m in e or the actors? Ti me will show . "
Time ha s show n th a t the res ponsibili ty for the ill-fa vor with which th e
ori ginal performan ce was received was
entirely du e to th e singers. Th e
T enor, Gr aziani, had a cold a nd his
hoarse , alm ost ina udible, vo ice did
not im press. Var esi, th e Baritone,
apparently made nothing of t he beautiful music assigned t o his pa rt, a nd
t he effect of th e celebrated du et
between Violetta an d Germ ont in t he
Second Act was entirely mis sed . Th e
mo st ludicrous pa r t of t he performa nce, however , lay in th e fact th at
th e role of Violetta was ass igned
to Mme . Dona telli, who im personated
the de lica te, sickly heroine. She was
one of the st ou te st ladi es on or off
the stage a nd when , at th e beg inn ing
of t he T hird Act, th e doctor declares
that consumption ha s wasted her
deli cate frame, th e au dience was
sent into a st a te of uproa rious glee,
which na tura lly did not lead t o an
apprec iation of t he tragic action of
the closing scenes .
Its failure a t Venice, however, did
not prevent "La Travia ta " being
re ceived en thusiastically elsewhe re. I n
other parts of Ital y it was a great
success, a nd, as is well known, is
today rated am ongst Verd i's masterpie ces, finding a place in the repertoire
of th e mo st d istin guished Opera
Houses t he world ove r.
It is int erest ing to k now th a t
"Travia ta " was written in a singl e
mo nth , an d th at its libretto, com piled
by P ia va, is a ver sio n of the well
know n tragic story of Ca mille.
Th e beautiful music of " La T ravia ta " is delight fully played in NIr.

54767H DANCE MACABRE-Saint Saens ... Henrion
$2.00
A big, stirring and rather catchy grotesque dance. The skeletons
steal forth from their graves as the last stroke of midnight is
heard and proceed to dance about among the tombstones to
Death's fiddling. A crowing cock announces the approach of
dawn and the dancers scamper back to their resting places. (For
interesting detailed description see page 87 of the Ampico
Recording Catalog.)
1221F DEEP RIVER-Coleridge Taylor • . . . . DeBert
$1.50
Arr. by Harry Burleigh
An old Negro Spiritual originally arranged by Coleridge Taylor,
an English negro composer of great prominence, for solo voice.
Harry Burleigh, an American negro composer has made the
arrangement for piano recorded on this record which so fully
voices the sincerity of the song-one of the greatest negro melodies.
57826H STACCATO ETUDE-Rubinstein . . . Levitzki
$2.00
Brilliant and calling for superlative technical skill but containing
a delightful flow of melody and interesting contrasted rhythms
which make it a thing of everlasting delight to all classes of
listeners.
58013F IRISH TUNE FROM COUNTY DERRY-Grainger. Laros $1.50
A gripping, plaintive song-music with a hidden tear. It is known
to many as "Danny Boy," the song Schumann Heink has made
so popular and which she says always seems like a fitting memorial
to her boy and all the boys lost in the late world war.
60401G COUNTRY GARDENS-Grainger •. Souvaine
There's a refreshing gaity in this old Irish dance-an irresistible
dash and swerve to the ryhthm that makes it more than just
music. It is a stimulant for mind and body .
