Black & White magazine. He holds a Master’s Degree in
Art and operates a fine art printing business in support of
local artists.
Moon Dance Over Half Dome
Often surreal, sometimes irreverent, always provocative,
Richard Harrison and Robert Cochran present a conceptual
exploration into the dark recesses of the room, the
landscape and the mind with their post-modern exhibit
entitled Altered Illusions. Our demons are not always “out
there”.
Robert Cochran

Immaterial Desires
Richard Harrison, a graduate of the Glen Fishback School
of Photography, is currently enjoying the freedom of
creating and working on his own projects. Altered Illusions
will be his fourth exhibition at Spectrum Art Gallery. While
presently working exclusively in digital imagery he worked
for many years with large format film. He has provided
photographic services to large corporations, as well as
individuals and small businesses. He has had numerous
commercial images published in national and international
trade magazines. He has also taught photography at the
college level in Colorado and Oklahoma.
Higher Purposed Driftwood
Provocateur, photographic artist, writer, educator,
deconstructor and born-again biker Robert Cochran is a
Caucasian male, 6 feet in height, weighing approximately
170 lbs. with no distinguishing scars or tattoos. He has
been exhibiting his photographic art locally, nationally and
internationally for over 10 years and has been featured in

Almost instantly following the discovery and during the
refining stages of photography, there were a select group of
photographers using various techniques to further enhance their
creations.
a mentor. Among other favorite photographers, who quite
probably influenced my work, have been Glen Fishback,
Andreas Feininger, Jay Maisel, Bert Stern and William
Mortensen, to mention just a few.
Like many others, in order to create composite images,
I experimented with all sorts of photographic formats,
techniques and processes over the years. Multiple in-camera
exposures, sandwiching, cutting and pasting and on and on.
But was never completely satisfied with the process or the
results.
The introduction of Photoshop in the early 1990’s was
the answer. Although, at that particular time, its use was
pretty much limited to graphic arts and printing to create
halftones. With the addition of Photoshop’s “layers” in
Version 3 way back in 1994, a whole new digital world of
possibilities opened – not just for the graphic artist, but for
the photographic artist as well. As goes the old cliché…
Richard Harrison
The Back Side of Bodie
Many of the old masters of photo montage and composite
images went to great lengths to produce their photographic
images. Their purpose was not necessarily to deceive the
viewer, but to add another dimension to the imagery of
photography and to create a message that the media at the time
was not capable.
A favorite photographic artist is Oscar Gustave Rejlander. His
image Two Ways of Life generated from 37 different images
was created by combination printing. This image is the most
complex photograph created by Rejlander using this method
and took six weeks to produce. The image won Rejlander
considerable recognition, awards and a large following.
While traditional or old school photography techniques have
been utilized in this current exhibition Altered Illusions, with
co-exhibitor Robert Cochran, the digital process has been
used extensively to create these post-modern images.

Following the work of Rejlander, Henry Peach Robinson was
another old master of the printing technique. Suffering from
health problems caused by chemicals used in the process,
Robinson switched to paste up collages.
Friday Photography Live will feature my post-modern
photography images and the techniques and methods used to
create and plan my work. This, as well as the photography of
several old masters of the art will be shown and discussed as
well. Spectrum Art Gallery’s Friday Photography Live will be
presented July 15th at 7:00 PM. As always, admission is free
and open to the public.
My introduction to photography began while in the Army at
the base craft shop in Munsani, South Korea. My first mentor,
Sgt. Szell, had been a civilian photographer in Hungary. He
led me through the basics of developing and printing and
an introduction to those incomprehensible “f/stops.” I later
attended the Glen Fishback School of Photography, with an
emphasis on commercial photography, where I encountered
Sam Young, Master Photographer PPA, whom I also consider
Alice Ramirez Tundra Sunset with old Aerobee Rocket Launch Tower
Especially during a Fresno July/August, the gentle
temperatures of a tundra summer, as well as the sparkling
snow-covered stretches of fall and winter, remind me that
Churchill, Canada is my spiritual home; my photographs,
both traditional and digitally-manipulated, are my attempts
to capture its beauty, its soul, to bring it south to share. I
especially love to photograph large carnivores in their
natural habitat, and they, and sometimes their teeth,

dominate my work at this exhibit.
In October-November, snow already blankets the Tundra,
sometimes bringing blinding Arctic white-outs. Polar

ebony-colored gaze of a polar bear, you might even think they
are friendly. From a safe distance, they SEEM like sloppylovable white dogs. They are living proof that cute isn’t
necessarily cuddly. In truth, to them you are just meat. In my
bear photos, I wanted to capture the deceptive charm of these
animals, their interactions with each other and in one case
with a daring human being.
Playfighting Polar Bears
bears have gathered on the western shore of Hudson Bay,
waiting for the ice to form and hunting season to begin
again. Males pass the time in boisterous play-fighting
with other males. Sows with cubs avoid the males but
are often seen where the males are not. All are especially
dangerous this time of year, because they have been
fasting since the ice on Hudson Bay melted last spring.
They have been living off their stored fat, and their
appetites are ravenous.
Alice Ramirez
Mutual Curiosity
The natural beauty of the landscape is austere in winter. The
sky is usually gray, snow covers the ground, the many lakes
and ponds frozen, and an often spectacular sunset comes early,
starting around 4:30 pm. July transforms the Canadian tundra
into colorful and teeming life. Other of my photos capture
the beauty of the land itself and the remains of its history.
During the cold war, Fort Churchill, now defunct, stood vigil.
The site of the Aerobee rocket launcher, built by the USACanada military, is now a landmark of the Churchill Northern
Studies Centre, a base camp for visiting scientists.
I earned my degree in Fine Arts from Bowling Green State
University in Ohio. Before discovering computer graphics
and photography, I dabbled mostly in crafts, and for a few
years sold my hand-sculpted codpieces at the Renaissance
Pleasure Faire when it was still in Agoura, CA. Photography
and computer graphics became my twin passions as soon as I
started doing them.
August 26 Friday Photography Live will feature my
PowerPoint presentation “The joys and hazards of far north
photography with a focus on polar bear country” at 7 PM.

The Rocky Prides
Being exposed to a new world is scary and exciting at the same time. You are able to gain great amount of experience when you
emigrate to a new country while the challenges that follow this move would make you stronger and more determined. I moved to
United States nine years ago with my family. While I was a teacher back in my native country Iran for twenty-two years, I had to
start over and decided to go back to school. By combining my educational background in visual arts, and my personal hobby in
photography and graphic design, I decided to work and focus on this field.
My focus so far has been on landscape photography, and it has mainly been water oriented. Water has always played a major role
in my appreciation of nature. I feel lucky to be able to live so closely to the amazing natural life that we have, and I believe that
I can present and appreciate this natural beauty through photography. While being in nature, I feel most at peace. Photography
to me is a way to express myself, and an opportunity to show the world the small beauties and glamor of life that are sometimes
overlooked.
Recently, I have become more interested in graphic design, in which I have been quite fortunate and honored to create a logo for
Fresno City College Entrepreneur’s club. Eventually, my goal is to continue my education in graphic design, thus I would combine
my background in visual art and experience in photography, and would be able to acquire a career in graphic design. Gaining
higher education has allowed me to have a creative and individualistic sense towards the art.
TABIAT...
“Tabiat” in Farsi language can be translated into “Nature”. This exhibit was created by working in digital mixed media processes
that is transferring my images to a new surface. Throughout this process, I have been experimenting with new options and new
dimensions combining the classic fine art and digital techniques. By transferring images to a new surface, I am able to create a
different mood and feeling unlike what was originally perceived. I believe that everyone will see something different, feel different
emotions and have different reactions while observing my work.

A Note from the President
New Annual Auction Format!
Greetings members and supporters! We are now halfway
through the year, and I am delighted to report that we still
have a great deal of activities in the works! Most notably is
our Annual Print Auction coming up on Sunday, October 30,
2016.
We heard your voice and we are thrilled to introduce a New
Print Auction design that will be exciting for our members, art
collectors, and our community!
After our Auction concluded in 2015, members and
volunteers met to discuss what milestones we have
reached, what challenges we faced, and what we could do
to improve the overall experience. From your suggestions
and commentary, as well as expertise from other
organizations, the Auction Committee has been constructing
a revolutionary new format for our print auction – and the
results so far indicate this will be an event you won’t want to
miss!
The most distinct difference is we will be dividing our
auction experience to two known and successful formats:
Silent and Live auctions. This will allow attendees a
more interactive experience, and keep positive momentum
going between the two activities. It is our hope that
with a renewed design, we will reach more people in our
community, provide greater exposure for our members and
donors, and have a greater success with our auction.
In addition to an exciting new format, we will also be
enhancing the overall experience of our auction event. More
details to come in the next edition of the Focus, but think
“theme.”
Be sure to save the date!
Sunday, October 30, 2016
Lastly, I would like to reach out to our membership and
encourage you to get involved! We have some exciting
opportunities to contribute to our gallery’s operations, from
helping with hanging shows to planning key components
of our mission, and from sitting during gallery hours to
working with the organizational and committee leaders
to move Spectrum Art Gallery towards our mutual goals.
It would be a great pleasure to discuss your interest in
our opportunities for participation – please contact me at
[email protected].
I look forward to hearing from you!
With thanks and appreciation,
Jesse Merrell, President
As an all-volunteer photography organization, Spectrum’s
print auction aims to both provide financial support to our
community mission and maximize the opportunity for our
membership to participate in that effort. With many active
members and supporters, we anticipate receiving well over 70
prints each year.
We heard your voice! Utilizing the feedback of our
membership, the 2016 Auction Committee is taking several
steps to ensure the success of each generously donated print.
We are working towards increasing the audience size, space
of the auction, and event support to create the best auction
possible.
We have also reached out to successful nonprofit auctions to
learn about best practices. For example, we have learned that
the majority of valuable auction pieces are sold in a silent
auction, and also that a live auction session should be short.
So, as we continue to support maximal participation, most
of our donated prints will be auctioned in a “silent” format.”
And silent really isn’t silent at all - each auction is a dynamic,
interactive process that helps eager art lovers to navigate large
numbers of works.
We have also learned that - particularly for art work - live
auctions are more unpredictable and usually require “creating
an experience of excitement” to succeed. For decades, famous
artists and art critics have written about their “love-hate”
relationship with this format.
Still, live auctions are fun and they draw many supporters.
And those of us on the 2016 Auction Committee aim to select
different prints from our generous “donation pool” to create an
exciting live auction experience.
When you finally see our auction layout, keep in mind that
where and how works are auctioned DO NOT imply their
artistic value. The difference for our auction, of course, is
that we will be supporting a good cause -- and we hope
everyone has a great experience as well and that each donor’s
works are given the opportunity to do the most good for our
organization.
We are very excited to be able to evolve our annual auction
experience, and look forward to your participation. If you
have any questions regarding our new process or would like
to participate in planning our event, please feel free to contact
us at [email protected], or join us at Spectrum Art
Gallery every third Wednesday of the month at 6:00 PM for
our Auction Committee meeting.

Spectrum Information
Curator’s Corner
We have many exhibition opportunities coming your way
with lots of important details to note below.
The current cycle of the Rotating Members’ Space ends
with the August, 2016 exhibition and a new one will begin
in September.
Any active Spectrum member interested in the opportunity
to exhibit in our RMS through a year-long commitment of
installing one new, framed photograph each month needs
to provide an email request and your name goes on the
waiting list for our next available cycle, which begins with
the September, 2016 exhibition.
Selection is by first come first serve, email request date
(final date to submit - JULY 15, 2016). Participants will be
notified promptly after JULY 15, 2016 as to who will be in
the next RMS cycle. A mandatory training session must be
attended to be considered - even you returning participants.
1st Priority is given to those who never have had the
opportunity to participate in the RMS.
2nd priority is given to any member that was not in the last
cycle.
3rd priority goes to those who just participated in the last
cycle.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Whether or not you have
participated in the past RMS cycles, if you cannot attend
either of the 2 mandatory RMS trainings (Aug. 1, 2016 at 6
PM or August 29, 2016 at 5 PM) you will forfeit your place
on the waiting list for this 2016/17 RMS.
If you have any questions please contact:
Steve Dzerigian
Ph: (559) 442-4868
E-mail: [email protected]
Members, you will find the submission details elsewhere in
this issue of Focus for our 2016 Traveling Shows at Fresno
City Hall and The Big Fresno Fair.
If you are interested in an exhibition in the Main Space
for 2018:
We will be putting together the 2018 Exhibition Calendar
for 3 person shows.
This new policy was established, because of the unusually
high number of member requests for shows. Prior to this
1 or 2 person shows were the norm and wherever you
see those in our current 2016 and 2017 calendars, they
were “grandfathered in” since their respective requests
were submitted formally before the current policy was
established.
What it takes for a member to reserve a show:
1. Member must be current in their dues and service
duties.
2. Member must have had their portfolio reviewed by the
exhibition committee.
3. Member, who has not mounted an exhibition in
Spectrum Art Gallery’s Main Space (Rotating
Members’ Space, Traveling Shows, or our bookstore
bins do not count), must serve on the installation
committee for at least 2 installations for our large
group shows or guest artist exhibitions prior to their
spot on the Exhibition Calendar.
This is a new requirement now in effect due to our
existing vacancies on this very important committee and
to afford each member new to our exhibition practices the
opportunity to get some invaluable experience before it
becomes time for their own show.
Member must submit an email request, which will be
placed chronologically on the waiting list for 2018 and
2019.
Any questions, again feel free to contact Steve Dzerigian
<[email protected]> or (559) 442-4868
I look forward to seeing more of your work and hope you
will join us to support our Spectrum Art Gallery Members
and Guest Artists by celebrating with them at their
upcoming openings and events.
Respectfully,
Steve Dzerigian, Curator

Spectrum Art Gallery’s Traveling Shows
1. Fresno City Hall
Spectrum Art Gallery’s traveling show has been accepted
into the Fresno City Hall art exhibitions for the month of
August. This is a great way to get your work out into the
public since the traffic coming through city hall is huge.
We have been assigned both floors and there is ample
opportunity for all members to get to show their very best
that you can create. To assemble a cohesive show, gallery
standards need to be met. As a reminder that is neutral frames,
and white mat boards. Black mat boards will be accepted in
rare cases where white won’t work. Uni-frames do not meet
gallery standards and the Fresno Art Council won’t accept
them. Uni-frames are the ones that come assembled and have
only spring clips on the back to hold the art work and cable.
These frames are not reliable and can easily fall off the wall.
Also Fresno Arts Council requires coated cable on the back of
the frames. This is due to damage done by uncoated cables on
city hall’s wall in the past.
Consideration of appropriateness should be taken by the artist
to meet approval by the Fresno Art Council. Fresno City Hall
is a public facility and not a gallery, therefore, graphic nudity
and profanity is not acceptable.
Deadline Sunday, July 10th 5 PM
Please place your prints (limit to up to four pieces) in
the cabinet in the storage room at Spectrum Art Gallery.
If you are late for any reason please do not bring them
in to Spectrum, but contact Jim Curnyn (559 435
5532 Cell: 559 312 4527 cell; [email protected]
jimcurnynphotography.com) to ensure they get properly
registered so as to not miss the show.
1. The Big Fresno Fair
Spectrum Art Gallery is scheduled to exhibit our artwork
at The Big Fresno Fair for the month of October. Please
deliver one or two ready to install, framed photographs to
the “Traveling Show” wooden cabinet (with doors) in the
archive room, no earlier than August 15th and no later than
September 11th.
You must properly clearly identify your photographs
submitted to the Big Fresno Fair.
Deadline Sunday, September 11th 5 PM
1. Gallery Standards - Please follow gallery standards
when framing your art: neutral frames (uni-frames not
accepted), wire, and gallery standard mat boards.
2. Frames no larger than 20”x 30”
3. Information required:
• Title of work
• Name of artist
• Medium
• Year
• Price or NFS if not for sale.
We need this information to make the label.
Please feel free to e-mail me with any questions.
