Dear Collectors,
Welcome to 2005 and on behalf of the Philatelic Group I would
like to wish you and your family a very happy new year.
The program this year celebrates significant events and
anniversaries, which have helped shape our nation and
our place in the world. A highlight this year will be the
Pacific Explorer Stamp Expo in Sydney where four stamp
issues will be launched – the 150th Anniversary of the First
Australian Coin, the Centenary of Rotary International, a
unique Joint Issue with the United Kingdom and Creatures
of the Slime. The joint issue will bring together the beauty
and diversity of different parts of our world presented in
se-tenant pairs. Creatures of the Slime is a children’s issue.
Our first stamp issue is a territory, Christmas Island Lunar
New Year – Year of the Rooster. The rooster is the tenth sign of
the Chinese Zodiac. Vibrant illustrations on the stamps show
the colour and excitement of Lunar New Year celebrations.
January also heralds this year’s Australian Legends stamp
issue. The release of the issue coincides with the Australia Day
celebrations and the identities of the recipients is kept secret
until then. Details will be published in the next Bulletin.
This year we celebrate the centenary of one of the
nation’s most popular sporting events. The Australian
Open Tennis Championships were first held in 1905 with
women competing for the first time in 1922. The event
attracts many international competitors and is the first
Grand Slam of the tennis year.
Australian Parrots is a new commemorative issue which
brings to life the vibrant colours of some of Australia’s
most beautiful birds. Found in many different habitats,
these parrots are representative of species from all parts
of the continent. I look forward to another great year of
showcasing our national identity and character on Australian
stamps.

Christmas Island Lunar New Year
Lunar New Year, the most important
traditional Chinese festival, is celebrated by
Chinese people throughout the world. It is a
time to complete unfinished business, settle
debts and bury differences so the new year
can be started with a clean slate.
Celebrations centre on family and family
reunions. Incense is burned for ancestors;
special food is prepared. Friends visit each other
and presents and cards are exchanged.
Gifts of money wrapped in lucky red paper
envelopes are distributed widely.
In the Chinese calendar the years are named
for different animals in a 12 year sequence. The
Year of the Rat, the first year in the cycle of 12
last fell in 1996. The sequence is Rat, Ox, Tiger,
Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey,
Rooster, Dog and Pig.
This year we celebrate the Year of the
Rooster, the tenth in the cycle.

The Rooster
In Chinese tradition, the rooster is
admired as courageous and beneficent,
and symbolises reliability, never failing to
announce the arrival of a new day. Rooster
years were 1909, 1921, 1933, 1945, 1957,
1969, 1981, 1993 and 2005.
Those born in the year of the Rooster
are usually good looking and well-dressed.
Appearance and status are important to
them. Roosters are clever and conscientious
in fulfilling their duties. They are talented
in organisational work and manage money
well. Although good at tackling problems
and completing assignments, they are
unlikely to be innovators.
Whilst generally kind, rooster people can
be critical, frank and insensitive, and may
refuse to admit they are wrong. Roosters
make excellent actors. In a happy mood they
are likely to be the centre of attention. While
male roosters tend to be boastful, females are
more modest, patient and kind, and do well
in any social work.
Catherine the Great, Amelia Earhart, Rudyard
Kipling, Groucho Marx, and Peter Ustinov are
some well known people born in the year of the
rooster.
The designs
The stamps feature a rooster, with the
Chinese text for “Year of the Rooster”. The
miniature sheet design draws from the story
of an ancient creation goddess (Nu Kua)who
created the rooster on the first day of the
lunar year.
The Zodiac sheetlet was introduced in
2002 and consists of the miniature sheet
and 12 stamps each showing one of the 12
animals in the Chinese zodiac:
10c - Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit
15c - Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat
25c - Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig
The Zodiac sheetlet continues as part of
the Lunar New Year issue. The Zodiac stamps
are only available in the Zodiac sheetlet and
the Zodiac stamp first day covers.

The rooster symbolises
reliability and is believed
to ward off evil.
An uncirculated 50c aluminium bronze coin
with a rooster engraved on the reverse is used
for this product. The miniature sheet from
the issue is featured on the cover.
The designer
The stamps, miniature sheet and Zodiac
sheetlet are designed by Luis Chiang of
Melbourne. He has been commissioned to
design a complete cycle of 12 issues in this
series which started in 1996, the year of the
Rat. Luis was born in Macau and studied
art, design and Chinese painting at East
Asia University before coming to Australia
in 1985. He has an advertising agency and
graphic design studio in Melbourne.

This commemorative issue of two stamps
celebrates the Centenary of the Australian
Open Tennis Championships.
The Australian Open was established in 1905
as the Australasian Tennis Championships and
played at the Warehousemen’s Cricket Ground
in Albert Park, Melbourne. Rodney Heath
from Victoria was the inaugural winner. The
first winner of the women’s title, which was
added to the tournament in 1922, was Margaret
Molesworth from Queensland.
The competition was renamed the
Australian Championships in 1927, eventually
becoming the Australian Open in 1969, when
all events were opened to professional players.
Until 1972 the Championships were held at
various locations around the country. In 1972
the Lawn Tennis Association of Australia (now
Tennis Australia) decided the tournament
needed a permanent site.
The Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club in
Melbourne was selected as the first permanent
home of the Australian Open. During the 1980s
the Australian Open grew so popular that it
outgrew the Kooyong facilities.
The tournament moved to the multipurpose Flinders Park when it opened in
January 1988. Following expansion in 1996,

Flinders Park was renamed Melbourne Park.
Centre court at Melbourne Park, which
was named the Rod Laver Arena in 2000, is
known worldwide for its retractable roof, a
design innovation that allows play to continue
regardless of the weather.
In the sixties and seventies the tournament
was dominated by Australian tennis players
such as Rod Laver, Roy Emerson, John
Newcombe, Margaret (Smith) Court and
Evonne (Goolagong) Cawley.
Two Swedes, Mats Wilander and Stefan
Edberg were the star players in the men’s
singles in the eighties whilst Martina
Navratilova and Chris Evert shared five
women’s titles between them.
Since the early nineties the Americans
have dominated the men’s competition,
with champions such as Jim Courier, Pete
Sampras and Andre Agassi whilst the women’s
competition has seen multiple titles won by
Americans Monica Seles and Jennifer Capriati
and Europeans Steffi Graf and Martina Hingis.
Australians Roy Emerson and Margaret
(Smith) Court have the honour of holding the
greatest number of Australian singles titles.
Emerson won six between 1961 and 1967 and
Court won eleven between 1960 and 1973.

When viewed together the two designs illustrate
the many changes in the Australian Open
Tennis Championships during its first 100
years.

The stamp features an image of a stylised
male tennis player against a background
showing a tennis match being played at the
Warehousemen’s Cricket Ground in Albert
Park, Melbourne where the first tournament
was staged in 1905.

Australia’s colourful parrots are among our
most beautiful and spectacular birds. Of
around 370 species of parrot worldwide,
55 (including cockatoos, lorikeets, rosellas
and parrots) are found in Australia, and
constitute a significant proportion of the
country’s approximately 750 bird species.
Parrots can be found in many habitats,
from tropical rainforests to the desert, and
from the mountains to the coast. They
belong to the group of birds known as
Psittaciformes.
Two physical features set them apart from
many other birds: a short, deep, down-curved
bill; and the arrangement of their toes with
two toes pointing forward and two pointing
backward.
The stamps
Princess Parrot (Polytelis alexandrae)
– widely but erratically distributed across the
arid mulga and spinifex scrubs of interior
northern Australia.
Rainbow Lorikeet (Trichoglossus
haematodus) – widespread in eastern
Australia from the tip of Cape York Peninsula,
south to Melbourne, and west to Adelaide.
Green Rosella (Platycercus caledonicus)
– found only in Tasmania and the islands of
the Bass Strait where it is at home in most
wooded areas up to 1,500 metres and suburban
gardens.
Red-capped Parrot (Purpureicephalus
spurius) – confined to the south-western
corner of the Australian continent, its
distribution is closely associated with the
Marri, a species of eucalypt.
Purple-crowned Lorikeet (Glossopsitta
porphyrochephala) – strongly nomadic and
found in a variety of habitats across southern
Australia from around Perth to the Mallacoota
region of Victoria.

The Stamp & Coin Dealers Association of
Australasia (SCDAA) is pleased to announce
their Petersham Stamp & Coin Super Fair.
The venue is Petersham Town Hall, 107
Crystal St, Petersham NSW (one block from
the railway station).
Petersham has been running since 1980
making it the longest running show of its
kind in Australia. The show will open at
9.30am to 4.00pm and admission is $1.00.
Free valuations will be available with
twenty-six local and interstate dealers on
hand to buy and sell stamps, coins, banknotes,
postcards, pins, cigarette cards and other
collectables.
There are five $50.00 door prizes to be

5 July 2005 marks the 60th anniversary of the
death of Australia’s wartime prime minister,
John Curtin (1885 -1945). Limited edition
souvenir stamp sheets commemorating this
anniversary are available from the John Curtin
Prime Ministerial Library in WA.
John Curtin was Australia’s wartime prime
minister from 1941 to 1945. His inspirational
leadership and courage unified Australia as a
nation during the grim years of World War 11
and the enduring achievement of government
was to create the foundation fabric of today’s
Australia.
The design of the stamp sheet includes an
official portrait of John Curtin printed on the
tab of the stamp plus a relaxed image of the
then prime minister against the Australian flag
on the border of the sheet.

Koala count
Ordering postmark impressions by mail
The Koala Count identifies specific reprints.
A koala symbol printed in the selvedge
adjacent to stamps and down either side
of a sheet indicates a reprint, two koalas
the second reprint, and so on. A kangaroo
indicates the fifth reprint.
In each issue of the Bulletin we publish
a list of the stamp issues reprinted since the
previous issue. Once a year (usually in the
June-July Bulletin) we print a summary list
covering reprints since the previous annual
summary.
The previous summary list was printed in
the June-July 2003 Bulletin.
Please forward fully stamped and addressed
covers, under prepaid outer envelopes, to
post office addresses listed on these pages.
• Endorse cover in the top left hand corner
with the name of the postmark required.
• Orders must be lodged before the last day
of use of the postmarker.
• All orders for prepared covers should be
accompanied by payment of 80c per cover,

Orders for Legends prepared national FDI covers must be received before the FDI withdrawal date of 23 February 2004.
Each year as part of Australia Day celebrations
Australia Post pays tribute to Australian
Legends. Legends are honoured for making
a significant contribution to our national
identity and heritage within their lifetime.
Who will be this year’s Legends, we can’t
say. But we will reveal that there will be six
in 2005 and they will be covered in detail in
the March – May Bulletin. We provide this
information, brief technical details and a
product list with prices in this issue for your
information and convenience.
From 21 January you can find out more
about the 2005 Australian Legends at any Post
retail outlet. Details will be published on-line
at www.auspost.com.au/stamps or you can
contact the Australian Philatelic Bureau
(e–mail to [email protected] or
Freecall 1800 331 794).
New this year
The 2005 Legends issue will be printed in a
portrait format. The design set will be three
pairs of stamps with each pair printed in a
module of 50 in two panes of 25. There will
be three booklets of ten x 50c self-adhesive
stamps produced. Each booklet will feature
two Legends.
Each of the issue sheets will have a gutter
strip. No special text or design will be printed
in the gutters.
Along with the gummed and self-adhesive
stamps, the issue will include a first day cover,
a stamp pack, a set of maximum cards and a
book.

The award and previous winners
Each Australian Legend receives a gold replica stamp
which is presented at a special awards function.
Past recipients have included Sir Donald Bradman;
Australian Olympians; Arthur Boyd; the Last Anzacs;
Slim Dusty; eminent medical scientists Professors Sir
Gustav Nossal AC CBE, Nancy Millis AC MBE, Peter
Doherty AC, Fiona Stanley AC and Donald Metcalf AC;
Margaret Court; and Rod Laver. The 2004 Australian

Pacific Explorer Souvenir
This new, self-adhesive sheetlet of ten
features the 50c stamp from the Bon Voyage
stamp issue (June 2004) . The stamp design
uses a decorative poster of the Dominion
Monarch ship.This is Australia Post’s first
self-adhesive sheetlet of ten stamps. An
image of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the
Pacific Explorer 2005 logo are printed in the
selvedge of the sheetlet.

—a region that lies just north of the Tropic
of Capricorn. This region occupies about
one third of our continent and supports
nearly 70 percent of our bird life.
Of the approximately 750 species of
birds found in Australia and adjacent seas,
about 117 can be seen north of the Tropic
of Capricorn. Another 50 species are found
mainly in the tropics and 321 species distributed within and south of the tropics.
Shown above is the stamp area for each

Make sure the postmark is the
updated postmark.
This PSE commemorates the centenary of
the first postmarker produced primarily
as a philatelic collectable. It was used at a
temporary post office at St James Hall Sydney
on 1 and 2 December 1905.
The occasion was a philatelic exhibition and
a souvenir postcard bearing the stamp was in
high demand. There were only 4,000 issued by
the Sydney Philatelic Club. The PSE design
is based on the memorabilia, postmark, and
stamp from the 1905 exhibition.
