ANDRE KAJLICH
Andre was struck by a subway train and lost both
of his legs while studying in Prague. Uncertain if he
would survive or ever walk again, he told doctors
that he would walk with just a cane and go wherever
he wanted. In 2010 Andre discovered triathlon at the
Challenged Athletes Foundation in San Diego.
With his handcycle he has taken a silver in Beijing at
the 2011 ITU Worlds and finished second in Kona. In
2012, he won the Ironman 70.3 Handcycle National
Championships, the Panamerican Paratriathlon
Championship, and the New York City Triathlon.
In 2014, he completed the Ultraman World
Championships in Hawaii, making him the first
handcycle athlete ever to do so. Incredibly, he
opted to use his everyday chair rather than his
racer for the run, so as to avoid “an unfair
advantage.” He completed a 6.2-mile swim,
a 261.4-mile bike ride, and a 52.4-mile run
in 26:41:55 over three days.

Like many innovative solutions, the original energy gel
that revolutionized performance nutrition all started with
a single question:
“How can I help an athlete reach their highest potential?”
For GU Energy Labs founder Dr. Bill Vaughan, an avid
runner and biochemist, that question was inspired by his
daughter, Laura, a competing ultra-runner who struggled
with the oh so fun gastrointestinal distress.
It was the early 90’s, around the same time neon
windbreakers, in-line skates, and spandex shorts were all
the rage. Energy bars, a.k.a. sawdust bricks, were in their
early stages, doing their best to provide unnecessary
ingredients and gut bombs to athletes searching for
that ever-elusive performance edge. Dr. Vaughan, on the
other hand, was experimenting with carbs in other forms.
Rigorous experimentation and refinement resulted in a
convenient gooey energy source that efficiently delivered
complex and simple carbohydrates, essential amino acids,
intramuscular buffers, faster than one could say, “Ready,
set...” The first three flavors of GU: Chocolate, Vanilla and
Orange launched in 1992.
Like our founding father, we, the employees of GU, are the
embodiment of heart and science. We make only what
athletes need, i.e. stuff that works like nobody’s business.
We walk the walk, run the run, and ride the ride. Helping

MAGDA BOULET
Magdalena Boulet joined GU Energy Labs in 2000.
A graduate of the University of California, Berkeley,
she studied under top exercise physiologists who
inspired her to continue her education. Boulet later
earned her master’s in exercise physiology. In 2008,
she competed at the Beijing Games on the US. Olympic
Marathon Team. As a captain of Team USA, she earned
team bronze medals in 2010 & 2011 at the World
Cross Country Championships. She was the nation’s
top-ranked marathoner in 2010, has a personal best
of 2:26:22. Recently transitioned to ultra marathons,
winning Way Too Cool 50k, USA 50M Championships
and the TNF 50M in 2014. At GU Energy Labs, Magda
leads all product development endeavors.

REBECCA RUSCH
Rebecca Rusch’s national and world titles in
whitewater rafting, adventure racing, orienteering,
and cross-country skiing certainly impress, but they
only set the stage; it’s the two-wheeled victories that
really lengthen her resume.
Rusch’s mountain bike accomplishments would strain
the pixels on your screen. National wins across multiple
off-road formats top the list, as well as record-setting
victories at storied ultra-endurance races like the
Leadville Trail 100, Dirty Kanza 200, and 24 Hour MTB
World Championships. Not content to wait for the race
to come to her, Rusch also claimed the record on the
142-mile Kokopelli Trail, coming in more than an hour
and a half faster than the previous champion. It wasn’t
her idea, but it doesn’t take a professor to see why she
earned the moniker “The Queen Of Pain.”
While maintaining a laundry list of accolades would be
enough for most athletes, Rusch takes no such time to
rest on her laurels. Her SRAM Gold Rusch Tour has been
traveling to races and events across North America to
help get more women in the saddle and riding their
bikes through skills clinics, social events, and group
rides. She created Rebecca’s Private Idaho, a grueling
gravel road event in her hometown of Ketchum that
attracts hundreds of riders to her backyard every year.

Roctane Energy Drink Mix packs even more electrolytes
and carbohydrates than GU Hydration Drink Mix. The
250-calorie serving contains carbohydrates (maltodextrin
and fructose) that use non-competing pathways to
help maximize carbohydrate absorption and utilization
while diminishing stomach distress. Sodium, the primary
electrolyte lost in sweat, aids hydration by maintaining
water balance. The amino acid taurine helps maintain

EMMA GARRARD
Emma Garrard was born in Alexandria, Scotland, and
spent her early childhood in Jakarta, Indonesia. She
moved to the U.S. (Texas) at age 11.
She was exposed to many sports at a young age, but at
14 she used a mountain bike in a sprint road triathlon—
and realized that XTERRA was just meant to be. Emma
competed in her first XTERRA race in 2006 and won
the 2007 XTERRA USA amateur championships. She
started racing professionally in 2008 and finished
fourth in the XTERRA US Pro Series and tenth at the
XTERRA World Championships in 2010. In 2011 she won
the USA Winter Triathlon National Championships.

At the end of the day you are the pros in merchandising and we don’t want
to overstep. Nonetheless, we have some thoughts to share on what we’ve
seen as successful approaches from our best specialty customers.
STEER CLEAR OF MASSDISTRIBUTED BRANDS
This category is full of products that have recently
(or long since) made the tricky migration to mass
grocery and stores like Walmart or Target. We would
say broadly that carrying such brands diminishes the
specialty presentation and makes earning acceptable
margin tough, at best. (How’s your bar margin, for
example? Or, if it’s good, how’s the turn?). There are
many great-tasting, higher-performing brands available
to build the killer specialty offering.
WHAT’S NEW?
Food consumers are about taste and humans are finicky.
Your customers demand variety and novelty. So mix it up.
Highlight the news with an end cap.
OFFER BREADTH,
BUILD CREDIBILITY
Offerings in electrolyte drinks, recovery, chews, original
GU, and Roctane hit customers across a spectrum of
endurance athletes’ needs. Sell a system of products
that work together. Greater breadth plus a wellarticulated assortment is sure to extend credibility
in the eyes of the customer.
DEVELOP A VISUAL STRATEGY
Try eight-packs for an end-cap display around a large
event. Use a seasonal flavor atop a rounder to fill out the
look of the store. Consider a few bins at the cash wrap.
Lots of new support in POP from GU this year too.
VOLUME PRICING:
SELL PACKETS AND BOXES
Make sure to have a bulk price for a box of 24—10%-15%
off the packet price. Once you’ve done this, you just
need some backstock to accommodate the onslaught.
A few packets is nothing—a hard-charging endurance
athlete will use a box in a week. Make sure you can
capture that athlete.
MEANINGFUL MARGIN
We often hear stores saying “we offer food as a service,”
usually with a sigh that they don’t expect to make money.
But this can absolutely be a fast-turning, high-profit part
of the store with great specialty brands that support the
industry’s retailers, athletes, and events.
