Welcome to our annual sale for 2011 being our sixteenth annual sale.
Our aim is to breed bulls exhibiting thickness, length and confirmation, with breedplan
estimates aimed at large weight gains as vealers or yearlings, with females who produce
milk, or bulls producing intramuscular fat and retail beef yield.
The majority of bulls are by our deceased sire Parson Hill Exceed. Exceed has produced a
line of bulls who are “peas in a pod” exhibiting all the attributes which we aim to
produce. Exceed’s pedigree is impeccable being out of the great Camilla 7 cow and by
Xcel, the Sydney Show Winner. We continue to keep sons of Exceed and recommend
you likewise secure this bloodline as his progeny are now limited in numbers.
We also have a number of bulls for sale by the very good sire HRT Xcel out of the great
Bramble Katherine M090. Xcel is the sire of Exceed. These bulls are similar to the Exceed
calves but with a touch more frame. It would be very difficult to go wrong with either
sire.
Franco Bazooka, a home grown sire, by Franco Yages has a number of good sons in the
sale. These attractive bulls are loaded with excellent intramuscular fat figures, which is
now sought by the meat industry. We have used Bazooka, and a son in our commercial
herd as well as using Bazooka in the stud herd.
We also have some sons of Franco Ab Initio a son of Wildfire, our sire, who was of
perfect structure and beautiful nature. To those clients who were Wildfire devotees we
recommend the sons of Ab Initio who have smaller birth weights than some others in
the catalogue.
This year we will again see the joined forces of Ramsey Bulmer and George & Fuhrmann
conducting the sale. We thank Darren, Jason and David of George & Fuhrmann and Allan
and Wayne from Ramsey & Bulmer for their assistance and promotion.
Thank you to all our voluntary “family and friends” who assist tirelessly every year. You
are very special to our family and we hope to be able to repay you in some way one day.

HEREFORD SELECTION INDEXES .
EBV: The Estimated Breeding Value is the estimated genetic merit of an animal for each recorded production trait. EBVs reflect the difference that can be
expected in an animal’s performance relative to the breed baseline of zero for each trait. On average, half of this difference will be passed on to the animal’s
progeny. EBVs in this report are calculated from the available performance information on the animal, its parents, progeny an d its close relatives across a
number of herds. This information is adjusted for age at measure and dam age while allowing for differences between herds, years, season of calving,
management effects and for mating and selection biases.
If no EBV is listed in an animal's record, then not enough information for the animal is available to report an EBV for that trait.
ACC: Accuracy (%) is based on the amount of performance information available on the animal and its close relatives - particularly the number of progeny
analysed. Accuracy is also based on the heritability of the trait and the genetic correlations with other recorded traits. Hence accuracy indicates the
"confidence level" of the EBV. Accuracy values range from 0-99% and indicate the probability of an EBV changing with the addition of more progeny data. The
magnitude of possible change decreases as accuracy increases. Accuracy below 50% should be regarded as low, between 51-90% as medium and above
90% as high. The accuracy is printed below the EBV for the trait.
Calving Ease EBVs are based on calving difficulty scores, birth weights and gestation length information. The EBVs are reported as differences in the
percentage of unassisted calvings. More positive EBVs indicate easier calving.
DIR: Direct CE indicates how this animal influences the birth of its progeny from two-year-old heifers.
DTRS: Daughter’s CE indicates how easily the animal’s daughters will calve.
GL: Gestation Length EBV (days) is based on AI and hand mating records. Lower (negative) GL EBVs indicate easier calving and increased growth after birth.
BWT: Birth Weight EBV (kg) is based on the measured birth weight of animals, adjusted for dam age. The lower the value the lighter the calf at birth and the
lower the likelihood of a difficult birth. This is particularly important when selecting sires for use over heifers.
200: 200-Day Growth EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of animals taken between 80 and 300 days of age. Values are adjusted to 200 days and for dam
age. This EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for growth to early ages.
400: 400-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 301 and 500 days of age, adjusted to 400 days and for dam age. This
EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for yearling weight.
600: 600-Day Weight EBV (kg) is calculated from the weight of progeny taken between 501 and 900 days of age, adjusted to 600 days and for dam age. This
EBV is the best single estimate of an animal's genetic merit for growth beyond yearling age.
MCW: Mature Cow Weight EBV (kg) is an estimate of is an estimate of the genetic difference in cow weight at 5 years of age. Smaller, or more moderate
EBVs are generally more favourable.
MILK: 200-Day Milk EBV (kg) is an estimate of an animal's milking ability. For sires, this EBV indicates the effect of their daughter’s milking ability on the 200day weight of their calves.
SS: Scrotal Size EBV (cm) based on the scrotal circumference measurements of bulls taken between 300 and 700 days of age, and adjusted to 400 day of
age. This EBV is an indicator of male fertility in regards to semen quality and quantity. Higher (positive) EBVs indicate higher fertility. There is also a small
negative correlation with age of puberty in female progeny.
DC: Days to Calving EBV (days) is an indicator of female fertility based on the time between a cow’s first exposure to a bull and when she subsequently
calved. Cows that calve late in the season or fail to calve are penalised. Lower (negative) EBVs are preferred indicating sho rter days to calving for the sire's
daughters.
CWT: Carcase Weight EBV (kg) estimates the genetic difference in untrimmed hot carcase weight and is adjusted to 650 days of age. More positive EBVs
indicate heavier carcase weights at 650 days of age.
EMA: Eye Muscle Area EBV (cm2) estimates genetic differences in eye muscle area at the 12/13th rib site of a 300kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs
indicate better muscling on animals.
RIB: Rib Fat EBV (mm) estimates the genetic differences in fat depth at the 12/13th rib in a 300kg dressed carcase. More positive EBVs indicate more
subcutaneous fat and earlier maturity.
RUMP: Rump Fat EBV (mm) estimates the genetic differences in fat depth at the P8 site of a 300kg dressed carcase. More positive EBV s indicate more
subcutaneous fat and earlier maturity.
RBY%: Retail Beef Yield Percent EBV (%) represents total (boned out) meat yield as a percentage of a 300kg dressed carcase. A more positive EBV
indicates higher percentage yield for the 300kg carcase size.
IMF%: Intra-muscular Fat Percent EBV (%) is an estimate of the genetic difference in the percentage of intra-muscular fat at the 12/13th rib site in a 300kg
carcase. Depending on market targets, larger more positive values are generally more favourable.
SM: The Supermarket Index estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd targeting
the domestic supermarket trade. Steers are either finished on grass or grain (eg 50-70 days). Steers are assumed marketed at 450 kg live weight (250k g
HSCW and 12 mm P8 fat depth) at 17 months of age. Daughters are retained for breeding. In response to industry feedback regarding eating quality and
tenderness, a small premium has been placed on marbling.
GS: The Grass Fed Steer Index estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd targeting
pasture finished steers. Steers are assumed marketed at 600 kg live weight (330 kg HSCW and 8 mm P8 fat depth) at 23 months of age. Daughters are
retained for breeding. In response to industry feedback regarding eating quality and tenderness, a small premium has been placed on marbling.
GN: The Grain Fed Steer Index estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd targeting
pasture grown steers with a 125-day feedlot finishing period for the grain fed markets. Steers are assumed marketed at 600 kg live weight (330 kg HSCW and
20 mm P8 fat) at 20 months of age. Daughters are retained for breeding. There is a significant premium if steers reach a marble score of 2 or greater.
EU: The EU Index estimates the genetic differences between animals in net profitability per cow joined for an example commercial herd targeting pasture
finished steers for the EU market. Steers are assumed marketed at 620 kg live weight (340 kg HSCW and 14 mm P8 fat depth) at 24 months of age.
Daughters are retained for breeding. There is no marbling requirement.
