Message
Dear Second Harvest Community,
Thank you for your extraordinary partnership! Not since the Loma
Prieta earthquake twenty years ago have we joined together on such a
massive scale in order to ensure that every neighbor makes it through
this economic crisis.

The poor economy has resulted in much hardship. Venerable businesses
like Gottschalks, which have been at the center of our community
for many years, have disappeared. Santa Cruz County has had one of
the highest unemployment rates in California, and Second Harvest
provided food assistance to over 60,000 people in March. Over 6,000
children are facing major reductions in their health insurance. The
budget must balance, but with these cuts, our increasingly vulnerable
community members have ever fewer nets to catch them when they fall.
Even though we are sobered by the extraordinary strains brought on by
this downturn, it is important to recognize all of the good things that
we have. Above all, we have a community that cares.
As fall brings the harvest, we are also reminded of the fall of 1989, when
the ground was ripped out from under us in a mere 15 seconds. We
were able to restore the community then, and we will do so again as we
pull ourselves out of this recession.

We are thrilled to be moving into our expanded Second Harvest
warehouse, which has been 20 years in the making. We will be able to
distribute twice as much food with the same number of employees. We
are also excited to be able to teach nutrition education classes in our
new kitchen. It is critical that we meet our community’s increasing need
for food while stewarding our resources to ensure that 95 cents of every
dollar continues to provide direct services.
As we move into the new fiscal year, we are making a shift in the focus
of our work. We will dramatically grow our focus on healthy foods and
nutrition education. In addition, we will be addressing obesity and
diabetes by providing more fresh fruits and vegetables to low income
families.
We encourage each and every one of you to continue your work on
behalf of our common mission.

Passion For Produce
Second Harvest recently partnered with the Church of the Nazarene to launch a pilot
Passion For Produce site. Volunteer nutrition educators learned how to give nutrition
presentations in Spanish and English and will begin to teach and distribute food with
their teams. As the program expands, Passion For Produce sites will be accepting new
volunteers who are committed to cutting the obesity and diabetes rates in our
community.
A Community Comes Together
FEED
In spite of unemployment rates that affected up to 1 in 4
Watsonville residents, our community gave more than ever
to the Holiday Food Drive. At over 1.9 million pounds of
food and cash equivalent, this year’s drive broke all prior
records and helped Second Harvest rise to the challenge
of the increased need for food in our community.
Expansion Project Continues
Phase II of the expansion project will conclude in September, bringing many new changes.
A new roof with skylights has brightened up the produce packing room. Our staff works out
of one central office and a fully equipped teaching kitchen is helping us combat the obesity
epidemic through education. Yet to come, the third and final phase of expansion at our
warehouse will bring us up to industry standard in food distribution and storage.

FEED HOPE!
Food For Children
This program serves low-income families with children at 48
different sites throughout the area including subsidized apartment
complexes, schools, and churches. Fresh produce and staples are
provided at convenient locations so that parents are able to access
assistance without missing work.
Emergency Food Assistance
Second Harvest supplies USDA commodities at seven locations around
the county. Income-qualifying families can pick up bags of different items
once each month.
Agency Food Distribution
Second Harvest acts as the distribution hub for 180 member pantries, soup
kitchens, and other agencies, which were responsible for distributing over
6.8 million pounds of food last year. These agencies provide a variety of social
services to the community, including head start, senior activity centers, afterschool programs, soup kitchens, and more. Agencies can shop at the warehouse
or order items online to receive the freshest fruits and vegetables available.
Outreach and Education
Staff and volunteers provide nutrition education to community members
in order to promote healthy habits. The Outreach Team educates the
community about food stamps, nutrition, and physical activity, as well
as diabetes and obesity.
Community Food Hotline
The Hotline has been busy this year, referring over 500 people each
month to their local food pantry or other social services. Through their
work as dispatchers, hotline workers are well-equipped to understand the
shifting day-to-day concerns of low-income people in our community.
