Last week’s Temiskaming Nordic Ski Club
(TNSC) newsletter stated: “Look forward to
great trails all this next week and into next
weekend with snowfalls and low temperatures in the forecast. The skiing should be
the best we have ever had in April.”
Well, saying we got the snow is an understatement. And as usual, the trails are in
great shape. Enjoy!
GET ACTIVE
There was a great turnout for the first Get
Active in Temiskaming event in Haileybury
on Sunday, April 10, despite the chilly start
to the day.
Walkers and runners took part in the fiveand 10-kilometre (km) distances, after the
100-metre toddler dash and the 1km and
2km took place. There was a definite family presence with parents and their children
walking/running together. What a great way
to promote fun and fitness.
Kudos to Chandra and Tony Juurlink for
organizing and promoting these events.
Thanks also to their sponsors for their support. They are working together to make our
community a better place to work and play.
For more information about sponsors
and upcoming events, go to the Get Active
website at www.getactiveintemiskaming.
ca. Please note, three volunteers from TNSC
are needed for the May 14 event at the Dymond Ball Park, as well as the Saturday, June
18, event at Pete’s Dam. If you can volunteer,
please contact Bruce Cull at 705-563-2349
or [email protected].
We are one of three beneficiaries of the
Get Active Series and providing volunteers
is our contribution.
CHALET HOURS
The chalet will remain open until the end
of April.
UPCOMING EVENTS
• Saturday, May 14 – “Celebrating Moms”

Sport Shorts
Best in Ontario
Congratulations to the Temiskaming Shores Minor Hockey Association (TSMHA) Pedersen Pee
Wee Puckhounds.
They won their Ontario Hockey
Federation Championship this
past weekend in Erindale
Their coaching staff, headed by
Rick Barron, must be over the moon.
Not to mention the confidence
booster this type of win gives to
those players.
That is the kind of win that will
have a ripple effect with those
players for years to come. I don’t
doubt those players will be on
many more winning teams.
Some of them may end up playing for the New Liskeard Cubs or
New Liskeard Lions, at some point.
I think, as a coach Barron
knows how to get the best out of
his players and he puts great emphasis on teamwork.
I read how they used their mo-
mentum from winning their league
playoffs to winning the NOHA’s
to peak at just the right time.
Sometimes in sports, it is the
work you do on the ice but often how a team builds chemistry
throughout the season.
It takes a seasoned veteran coaching staff to recognize when a team
should peak and to guide them
through the season’s ups and downs.
And here’s an added congratulations to the other TSMHA teams
who competed in their provincial
finals: the Ebert Welding Bantams,
the Wilson Atom Puckhounds and
the Koch Midget Girls team.
Congratulations!!
GET ACTIVE IN TEMISKAMING
What a beautiful day for the first
Get Active in Temiskaming event
of the season held at the Haileybury Farr Park last Sunday.
There likely was more snow on
the ground than organizers want-
Sue
Nielsen
ed, but it is Northern Ontario after
all. Sunshine always makes the
day better.
A clingy winter has left us all
anticipating warmer days ahead.
There is a definite undercurrent
of family participation in various sporting events in the region
thanks to organizers like Tony and
Chandra Juurlink.
Parents and others are mentoring the younger generation in the
community who believe in active,
healthy lifestyles.
The best part about the Get Active series is they raise funds for
various not-for-profit groups in
the region who are also into promoting active living.
It is a win-win situation.
WALKING
I was strolling past the Waterfront
Pool Fitness Center last week and
saw some adults using the walking poles that are being loaned out
courtesy of the Healthy Kids Community Challenge funding stream.
Those walking poles are also
available at Temiskaming Shores
Haileybury and New Liskeard libraries—free of charge.
Using walking poles has been
proven to burn upwards of 40 per
cent more calories than just plain
walking.
STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS
This week marks the longawaited beginning of the pursuit
of hockey’s holy grail—the Stanley Cup playoffs.
I am sorry to say, I’ve lost interest in the National League Hockey (NHL) now that we won’t be
cheering on a Canadian team.
No Canadian team made postseason play.
This is not a reason to panic, it
is only one season in a league that
originated on Canadian soil and
has a majority of Canadian talent
leading all NHL teams.
I am thinking the three-pieced
suits running the NHL might be
a little more than pleased because
their blue print for hockey is being
realized.
League Commissioner Gary
Bettman and company spend considerable time and energy towards
growing the game of hockey in
U.S. markets.
One day we could very well see
an NHL franchise in Las Vegas of
all places.
I guess if the dice rolls the right
way to fulfilling Bettman’s vision
of the growth of the game.
Maybe a team located in Las
Vegas could be called “Las Vegas
Dice”?
I can just picture what that jersey would look like can’t you?
Would their team meme be, “Bet
em heavy and sleep in the arena?”
Would they use the Pete Rose
rulebook also?
I don’t know about you hockey
fans, but when I hear 10,000-decibel music being blasted in NHL
arenas with scantily clad cheerleaders prancing around the stands
and franchises located in desert
locations— I cringe.
Best of luck to all the teams and
may the best team win come this
June as we rush off for a day at
the beach.
