“An Environment Where We Can All Grow Together”
A Letter from our principal...
Principal: Jef f Knapp
11/19/2010
Dear Parents and Guardians,
The first trimester has ended! It’s hard to believe we’re already a third of the way through
the school year. Teachers are busy working on report cards and they will be sent home on
Wednesday, December 1st after Thanksgiving break. We hope that you will find the district report
card very informative as it shows you how your child is progressing towards standards in each
subject area, as well as providing you with behavioral information and comments. In addition, the
Specials areas (Art, Music and P.E.) will also be providing assessment information on the report
card. Please utilize all of this information as a tool to see what areas your child is doing well in,
and what areas might need more attention as we continue to work together during the school
year.
This is the last newsletter that will be sent out in November. A reminder that there will be no
school for students next week (November 22-26). We hope that all of the Woodview families have
a safe and happy holiday as we have much to be thankful for. Have a wonderful
Thanksgiving from all of us here at Woodview School!
Sincerely,
Jeff Knapp

As some of you may know, a Woodview family lost their home to a fire earlier this
week. The Woodview community would like to support this family and help out. If you
would like to send in a monetary donation we will have an envelope in the main office
through November 30th that we will give to the family. We appreciate all of your thoughts
and donations to help this family in a time of need.
Our November Market Day sale was
outstanding! Thank you to all who ordered this
month. Thanks to your support, each school's
PTO will be receiving a profit check of just under
$400! This money will be used to help pay
for field trips, assemblies, teacher wish list items,
technology, and many other worthwhile
causes. Your support is invaluable!
Attached to December's Market Day order
forms, you will find a coupon good for $5 off of a
$25 order. It can be redeemed in either
December or January. While this coupon is only
redeemable by new customers, I want all of our
veteran customers to know how much we
appreciate them. So...another great big THANK
YOU to each and every one of you!
A special thanks goes out to the Park School
Volunteers who helped out at the November
sale, as well as the Starbucks and the Dunkin
Donuts in Round Lake Beach, for donating the
coffee and donuts for the volunteers. Lastly,
thank you to all of the families who purchased
pies to donate to the Avon
Township Food Pantry. The staff at the Avon
Food Pantry was extremely grateful.
Can't wait to see everyone in December!
Remember to stock up on your pies, candies, and
cookie dough for the holidays!

Clip & save Tyson Project A+ labels.
Turn in the labels to school. Your
school redeems them for cash. Each
label is worth $.26.
Here is another way to earn money for
Woodview. Simply clip the Box Tops
from your favorite General Mills
products and send them to school with
your child!
Did you know that Woodview
collects Campbell’s soup labels? The
labels are worth points and must have
the UPC code in order to be used. The
points can be redeemed for books, gym
equipment, and other items for our
school. Each teacher has a box in the
classroom to collect labels and box tops!

Calling All Penguin Patch Helpers:
Are you looking to help a family in need this holiday season? Woodview school
has a Mitten Tree that is adorned with various mittens of boys and girls in
need of a variety of necessary items. Those items include socks, mittens,
boots and coats. If you can find it in your heart to help those in need, please
come in and take a mitten. The tree is located in the Woodview media
center.
The mittens include the child’s age, size, and what is needed on the
back. You can sign out the mitten, purchase the item(s) you choose, wrap,
and send it back to school with the mitten attached as the gift tag. We will
distribute the gifts to the families.
If you would like your child to pick a mitten, or have us send one home in
their backpack, please email or call the school office. Please consider giving
to those less fortunate, and those that may be experiencing a hard time
providing essential items for their children this season. What a wonderful
lesson to teach our children about helping others!

P.E. UPDATE
The 3rd and 4th graders have just finished a unit called bags (or
baggo). They seemed to absolutely love this unit. It taught the students
teamwork and helped with their math skills. This week before
Thanksgiving break is a Wii Fit week. The kids will be doing exercises
through the Wii Fit game that we have.
The 1st and 2nd graders were taught how to play bags as well. They
were learning how to add and subtract during gym class. How awesome
is that!!! These students are also using the Wii Fit before Thanksgiving
break and learning new and fun ways to exercise.
The kindergartners were introduced to scooters and the correct way to
use them. They have also been perfecting the correct way to kick a
stationary ball.
We are very excited for the kids to come back from break. When they
return we will be doing a team building unit and our health unit as well.
Don't eat too much turkey!

NEWS FROM THE ART ROOM
FANTASTIC FIRST GRADE: The first graders are working on an assemblage sculpture. A sculpture is
something that you can see from all sides. An assemblage is something that you create by combining 3D
objects into one big object. We are making a snowmen assemblage sculpture. We are using scrap
wood, acrylic paint, felt, pom-pons, buttons, cotton balls, and markers to create our sculptures. Look for
these whimsical sculptures to come home before the winter break. Make a sculpture with your first grader by
using scraps of wood or sticks from outside!
SENSATIONAL SECOND GRADE: The second graders just finished their stained glass unit. We learned about
a famous stained glass window: The Rose Window of Notre Dame. Look for this window in the Disney movies
The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Ratatouille. We used chalk pastels for the first time to color
our stained glass pictures on black paper. Since the second graders did such a great job on this project, Ms.
Heinz let them create a fused glass project as well. We put glass pieces together in a design and Ms. Heinz
cooked them in the kiln. Look for our stained glass projects hanging up in the art hallway right now!
TERRIFIC THIRD GRADE: The third graders finished their clay project this week. We made nameplates by
making a slab of clay. We then used coils (like our coil pots from last year!) to make the letters for our
names. To add interest, we applied different textures on our nameplates and letters. We glazed our
nameplates and added a beaded wire for the hanger. Come by the display case to see them!
FABULOUS FOURTH GRADE: The fourth graders have been working on a portrait project. We are learning
about the artist Gustav Klimt, and using him as inspiration to create these unique portraits. Drawing portraits
is a difficult artistic skill to master. The fourth graders are doing a fantastic job by taking their time and trying
their best. Have your fourth grader practice drawing portraits (or self-portraits) at home using a photo or a
mirror! After we are done drawing these portraits, we will be coloring them using Gustav Kilmt inspired
patterns and gold foil paper.
WANTED: The art room is in need of square scraps of wood for an art project in February. If you can donate
some scrap wood, please contact Ms. Heinz by email at [email protected]. Thank you!

A “NOTE” FROM THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT
Hello Woodview families!
With so many holidays and breaks coming up, I will need your help! Your 3rd
and 4th grade students should be practicing at home. After this week, I will have a
website up for students to sing along with music and look at lyrics. I will also put
up files so students may practice recorder at home. Please support them with their
recorder practice! Help them find a place and time to practice. I know recorders
can be squeaky, but with a little practice they can sound wonderful! Thank you
ahead of time for your help and support!
1st and 2nd grade students are sounding great! We are playing, moving, and
singing! 1st Grade is exploring their voices and singing Lucy Locket lost her pocket.
2nd grade is learning the song Do-Re-Mi from the sound of music, to help them
learn Solfege (a musical language/do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do). Next week, both grades
will start playing melodic instruments (xylophones and Boom Whackers!) to accompany the music they are learning.
I am having so much fun in music class, and I hope your students are too! Here are
the concert dates again:
Winter Music Show- January 27th at 6:30pm (Just 3rd and 4th grade)
Spring Music Show- March 10th at 6:30pm (Just 1st and 2nd grade)
Again, please e-mail if you have any questions!
Sincerely,
Tyler Smith

Fine Arts Committee Update:
The Fine Arts Committee is excited to welcome Theatrebam Chicago to
Woodview School.
On Tuesday, November 30th, Theatrebam Chicago will be performing a play,
“Parker in the Park, A Natural Science Musical” for our students.
The play chronicles four friends during the busiest week at school—the final
days before the largest celebration of the year-- the Festival in the Park! Join
Parker, and his friends as they discover ideas for exploring science and
nature with their buddies Billy, Kayla & Courtney. Join them as they sing
and dance through the city park while learning about bees, trees, sprouts,
seeds, the earth’s orbit , photosynthesis, conserving energy, cicadas,
butterflies and protecting our environment.
Theatrebam Chicago uses music and drama in an interactive setting to teach
great lessons to the children. Theatrebam previously visited our school and
performed “Schoolhouse Rock-Live”.

HERITAGE FEAST
Woodview 4th graders along with their families and teachers, celebrated the 7th annual
Fourth Grade Heritage Feast on Tuesday, November 16th.
Students have been learning that America is a land of immigrants and this country is
made up of people from many different cultures. As part of the lesson, the students
talk to their families about the main country from which their ancestors emigrated to
the United States. They research that country and prepare a poster about it. Then,
the best part….parents are asked to prepare a dish from that country’s culture and
share it at the feast.
Fourth grade teacher, Mrs. Hyams says, the hope is, that as part of this social studies
unit, the students learn that we are all made stronger by our differences.
