2010 ANNUAL REPORT
Building a Senior Community !
was a year of innovation, growth, and change for Colonie Senior Service
Centers. We continued our efforts to identify gaps in our services and created
new programs or expanded services to build a truly supportive network of
services. As we move forward we will continue to approach new challenges
with innovative solutions for seniors and their families that will help them
enjoy life and age in place at home in Colonie.
Board of Directors
Officers
Michael S. Burke
President
In this model we have built, all of our programs and services can and do work
collaboratively with other community providers to help seniors live safely and
independently at home by coordinating resources. Increasingly, programs like Bright
Horizons and Umbrella are providing significant relief and support for seniors and
their families.
J. Eric King
Vice President
Carm Basile
Secretary
As the largest provider of senior services in Colonie, our approach is to make available
all of our services so that a senior and their family can choose to access only what they
need, when they need it. It is only a very few that need all we offer, but almost every
senior in Colonie needs at least one of the services we have to offer at some time.
Peter J. Campito
Treasurer
We are grateful to our supporters and those that work with us to make Colonie a great
place to live, work and play . . . regardless of your age!

2010 ANNUAL REPORT
Tra n s p o r t a t i o n S e r v i ce
“ To All of the
Transportation services provided by Colonie Senior Service Centers have
enabled elderly and disabled residents of Colonie to get to medical
appointments, the pharmacy, social activities and other errands. With our fleet
of nine vehicles, eleven dedicated drivers, and 20 enthusiastic volunteer drivers
and companions, we help seniors remain independent and safe at home.
Transportation Team :
Thanks for taking care of our
Dad & for all the TLC.”
- The H. Family
In 2010 our transportation services delivered 17,811 rides – up 8% from
2009. By monitoring repairs and continuing to upgrade our fleet, we
reduced vehicle maintenance costs by 58% which helped us offset the
40% increase in the cost of fuel. Our goal is to increase our efficiency by
reducing miles traveled through better routing and grouping of rides,
while continuing to provide top notch customer service. Similar
efficiencies were applied to the Good Turns Senior Escort Wagon Service,
which assists frail and disabled elderly with a fully escorted
transportation service operated by volunteer drivers and companions.
Our Driver Fitness Center at the Beltrone Living Center works closely with other senior service providers
and the law enforcement community to provide resources and alternatives to older drivers that can help
drivers continue driving safely, longer. In 2010 we opened nine Driver Fitness Centers in Albany County.
Senior Dining Programs
“I really appreciate the care
that they take with our
meals. The food is delicious
and hot, and the
entertainment is fun too!”
In 2010, Colonie Senior Service Centers served over 25,000 meals to seniors in our
community at ten locations, including Bright Horizons Social Centers.
For many seniors, enjoying a warm meal with friends is one way to stay
connected to the community. The Senior Dining Program brings friends
together at neighborhood meal sites where they can enjoy entertainment,
socialize and catch up on the news.

Bright Horizons at Pine Grove
Bright Horizons Social Day Programs celebrated our 25th anniversary
during 2010. The program originally started with a single member at one
site. At present, there are three sites providing respite to over 85 families
each month. These programs provide a safe place for loved ones who are in
need of a supportive environment during the day and respite for their
caregivers. Bright Horizons partners with families to offer a program that
includes companionship, hot meals, exercise, recreation, and socialization.
“My husband was very
reluctant about going . . .
Now he has come out of his
shell and become sociable
again. The program is very
positive and creative. Our
family thanks you from the
bottom of our hearts.
- Joan T.
In 2010, all three Bright Horizons programs were renovated. The Beltrone
site had an extensive remodel in July that included new carpeting, furniture,
paint and decorations. By November, the Carondelet site completed
renovations and an expansion. Members enjoyed an increase of over 50% in
the program space. The Pine Grove site, once exclusively for men, welcomed
female members back into the program by October. This site also received a
facelift.
The Bright Horizons Caregiver Resource Center continued to offer valuable
information and materials for families. The Virtual Care-giving webcams and
Skype offer caregivers a unique opportunity to keep in touch with loved
ones while they are enjoying Bright Horizons.
Umbrella of Colonie
Umbrella of Colonie is a home maintenance program designed to give
elderly homeowners the opportunity to continue to live safely and
independently in their homes. Umbrella connects seniors with retired
handymen to help with day-to-day projects around the home.
Umbrella handymen work to prevent small household repairs from
becoming major problems. Safety is a main focus of the program. Umbrella membership includes a 17-point
NYS Home Safety Inspection, and the handymen are alert to potential fire and safety hazards in homes, as well.
Now in its third year, Umbrella continues to expand its services to
cover the growing needs of today’s senior citizens. In 2010,
Umbrella of Colonie membership grew by 114%. We completed
1,446 jobs for 215 members. In addition, we launched “Under the
Umbrella,” a newsletter which keeps members and the handymen
informed and connected.
“Smart seniors in Colonie are joining
Umbrella. They do everything from snow
blowing to stair repairs. They’re
affordable, and trustworthy too!”
- Christine G. Umbrella member since 2009

Colonie Senior Service Centers, Inc.
2010 ANNUAL REPORT
Senior Housing Options
Colonie Senior Service Centers, Inc. currently owns and operates two residential facilities for seniors of differing
lifestyles and economic circumstances.
Sheehy Manor opened its doors in 1998 to seniors with limited
income. Many original residents still live there today, a testament to
the comfort and character of the facility. Sheehy Manor has become
one of the areas premier residences for independent seniors,
maintaining a waiting list for interested future residents.
Sheehy Manor
In 2010 Sheehy Manor has seen several changes. Many apartments
received new carpeting and vinyl flooring and common areas also
received new paint and flooring. A new sidewalk was installed to the
visitor parking lot. In addition, Sheehy Manor became a Senior Dining
Site, a feature which the residents thoroughly enjoy each month.
Residents created a Sunshine Fund to help bring comfort to ailing
neighbors, and continue to plan recreational activities such as
Bingo Nights and seasonal door decorating contests. Sheehy Manor
has remained a true community where everyone joins in to
maintain a warm neighborhood atmosphere.
The Beltrone Living Center, a middle income senior housing
facility, opened its doors in October 1999 with 249 apartment
homes for independent seniors. The Beltrone Living Center has
become a truly unique community. Residents don’t even have to
leave the comfort of the building to get to the Lakeview Restaurant,
the Country Café, The Salon at Beltrone, or Bright Horizons Social
The Beltrone Living Center
Centers. Residents also enjoy easy access to CSSC’s many programs
and services. In addition, the Town’s Senior Resources Department
and the administrative offices of CSSC, Inc. are located in The Beltrone Living Center. This brings together many
senior services, all accessible in one place. Residents also enjoy free membership to the Rudy A. Ciccotti Family
Recreation Center just down the road. And finally, 2010 marked the creation of the beautiful 10th Anniversary
Garden designed by Faddegon’s Nursery.
Lakeview Catering, in the Beltrone Living Center, is a unique enterprise in the Capital Region. It is a firstclass catering and banquet facility owned by a non-profit corporation, Colonie Senior Service Centers,
Inc., and managed by Sodexo. Many senior groups, as well as corporate and non-profit friends, use the
Lakeview facility regularly, helping to support us financially. All net proceeds from the operation are
reinvested in essential programs and services for seniors in the Town of Colonie and the Capital Region.
With funding levels flat or declining even as demand increases, this effort to become more self-sufficient
is important to the survival of CSSC.

Solutions for Seniors & their Families
Health & Recreation Programs
Colonie Senior Service Centers is fortunate to have many strong
community relationships that help us bring our programs to more
seniors in more locations.
Exercisers and Walkers meet at Colonie Center, Line Dancers kick up
their heels at the Fuller Road Fire Hall, Bocce leagues play at the Italian
American Center in Troy, and the Roessleville Presbyterian Church
hosts OsteoBusters classes. All of the Health & Recreation Programs
promote a healthy lifestyle to help seniors stay healthy, active and
independent.
“The everyday health &
recreation programs like
osteo and t’ai chi help me
stay active, and the active
aging health days are full of
useful information .”
To increase the reach of these popular programs, we recruit community
volunteers to maximize staff efficiency. We continue to develop new community
partnerships that will enable us to provide more programs in underserved
neighborhoods. Our strategy seems to be working . . . in 2010 attendance in
classes, activities and programs exceeded 11,000, with over 25 classes or
activities each week!
- Dottie R.
Vo l u n t e e r O p p o r t u n i t i e s
CSSC is privileged to be the beneficiary of over 275 volunteers
who give freely of their time and talent to help seniors and their
families throughout the year. In 2010, volunteers donated over
20,000 hours of service in the senior dining program, the Escort
program, in Bright Horizons, at the senior center reception desk
and at Sheehy Manor; they are building or club representatives
or officers, they help with the Senior Connections newsletter and
at fundraising events; others are volunteer leaders for
osteoporosis or diabetes wellness classes, help in the computer lab or
organize the books in the library; they staff the Country Café, and
perform tap and jazz numbers for seniors and other groups in the
community.
According to the Independent Sector, a leadership forum for charities,
the estimated dollar value of volunteer time is $21.36 an hour! Do the
math . . . that’s nearly a half million dollars! Without our volunteers we
would not be able to reach as many seniors with as many programs and
services as we do . . . So thank you, from the bottom of our hearts!
15
“Volunteering isn’t work…it’s
the pleasure of giving a little of
your love and time to others.”
-Mary T.
“You don’t do this for the award…
you do it
for the good feeling.”
