A MONTHLY PUBLICATION DEDICATED TO OUR MEMBERS & THEIR DOGS
BROUGHT TO YOU BY THE NEWFOUNDLAND CLUB OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA
FROM THE PRESIDENT…
FALL IS IN THE AIR!
Water Season - NCNC’s 2012 water season has come and gone very quickly.
Our club successfully held 5 water tests this summer. I wish I could report our
tests had a high pass rate but that wasn’t so this year. I am very hopeful next
year will be full of us celebrating new title holders in the hug line.
Congratulations to each of you who passed, and earned your new title with
your Newfy team member, job well done!
I want to thank all of the volunteers who made each of these tests come off
flawlessly from the chairperson(s) to the bobbers, thank you very much for
donating your time and smiles. All of our volunteers are awesome and without
them we could not have been able to provide these tests.
Gus is in charge of picking up the
leaves, only he does his own
special way! Drool glue!

Regional Specialty - Our Regional Specialty is right around the corner. I
know many of us are grooming, practicing our obedience, and getting ready
to host our friends from afar. Kathy and I will be hosting friends from out of
state and are greatly looking forward to sharing the many laughs that only
occur once a year. I am also getting very excited about watching the puppies
and veterans rip up the ring. Don’t forget to pack a tissue because I know I
won’t be alone shedding tears when the veterans take their turn in the ring.
Good luck to everyone who is entering our Regional! I am looking forward to
seeing many of our members both human and K-9. Don’t forget about sending
in your reservation form for the banquet being held the evening of our Regional,
it’s a great way to cap off our day and celebrate together.
Volunteers needed – Our Fall Draft Test is taking place on Sunday, November
18th. The test will be given in the Shadow Cliffs Regional Recreation Area in
Pleasanton. Please contact John Pearson to volunteer if you are interested
in helping with the test.
We are also looking for an Awards Banquet
Chairperson. Please contact me if you’re
interested in chairing this very fun and important
event.

MYASTHENIA GRAVIS STUDY- DOGS NEEDED! By Dr. Jen Larsen
My colleagues at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine are studying
Myasthenia Gravis in the Newfoundland.
Myasthenia Gravis (MG) is an autoimmune neuromuscular disease where the
immune system attacks receptors that control muscle contraction. This results in
generalized muscle weakness, which may lead to an inability to walk and swallow,
and many dogs with MG develop pneumonia. The good news is that Myasthenia
Gravis is treatable and some dogs may even go into remission over time.
However, due to the large size of Newfoundlands, proper treatment and nursing care
is costly and can be difficult. As a result, Newfoundlands are often euthanized when
diagnosed.
They are investigating the genetic cause for Myasthenia Gravis in the Newfoundland
and are in need of DNA samples from affected dogs of any age. They are also hoping
to collect adequate numbers of samples from unaffected (control) dogs over 5 years
of age at the upcoming Newf Club of Northern California regional specialty.
If anyone has or knows of a newf with MG, it would be great if they are willing to
donate a blood sample to help with this project. A purple top tube can be sent chilled
to UC Davis (2 tubes would be even better!). Providing a pedigree is also ideal.
If you plan to attend the NCNC regional specialty on October 26 in Dixon, CA, and
are willing to donate a control sample from your dog over 5 years of age, that would
be great. Zena Wolf will be there to collect blood- no shaving necessary!
For more information on the disease please visit:
http://www.vetmed.ucdavis.edu/vsr/Neurology/Disorders/Myasthenia%20Gravis.h
tml. If you are interested in sample submission or have questions, please contact
Zena Wolf at [email protected].

WORKING DOG-
SEPTEMBER WATER TESTS! WD, WRD, & WRDX
The NCNC’s September water test was held at Del Valle Lake Regional
Park in Livermore California. The weather was typical, sunny and cool
in the morning then becoming quite windy in the afternoon. My first
chairing assignment was made easy thanks to the volunteers who did
the setup, breakdown, paperwork, and who kept us all fed this weekend!
Our stewards were amazing, they endured the cold water, baked in the
sun and made sure everything ran smoothly for every exhibiter.
Judges Jo Nussle and Laura Gallagher were knowledgeable,
encouraging and ran the test efficiently and made each exhibiter feel
comfortable.
Some memorable moments of the weekend were Cherrie Brown and
fifteen month-old (and in heat) Flicker, our youngest entrant who
qualified in Junior. John Morozumi and Kona qualified in Senior with
some heart stopping moments and great handling from John.
On Sunday, Sophie handled by Jen Larson received their Senior title
and completing Sophie’s VN! Re-qualifying both days in Senior with
their usual strong and steady performance was Light handled by Erin
Zimmer. The teams who did not qualify this weekend were all very
close and we know that they will earn their water titles soon.
