From the President:
NCNC held our 2nd draft test and our final working event of the year on Sunday,
November 18th. I am so happy to report the test was extremely successful with
6 of the 7 entrants passing with flying colors! We had so many wonderful
volunteers that the test ran quickly, smoothly and ever so efficiently under the
supervision of our Chairman, John Pearson, Secretary, Lori Littleford and Chief
Steward, Rick Humphreys. Thanks to each of our volunteers who shared the
day with the entrants and for helping make this test one to go down in the record
books. Thank you to our judges Laura Gallagher and Karrie Cook for judging
the event, providing clear instructions and being a calming presence during the
test.

I would like to wrap up my final article of the year by expressing my gratitude
to all of you. 2012’ was an outstanding year for the club. We provided to our
members and Newfy enthusiasts 2 draft tests, 3 water tests, club picnic, regional
specialty, 3 draft seminars, a water seminar, an awards banquet, beautifully
edited newsletter, well managed website and lastly we all get to come together
one final time this year at our annual Holiday Party.
I know there were several other events attended by our members to include the
Davis Picnic, Concord Kidsfest, winning the best decorated bench at the Golden
Gate Kennel Club show and several parades throughout the year. Thank you
for being so willing to volunteer for without your
generosity of sharing
your time and talent we could not had all of the
events mentioned
above. Enjoy the season with your friends and
family. Happy Holidays!

"NH&R Challange Match: Ursula Cabalzar and Mike Reyer have once
again issued a challenge to NCNC for rescue support. They will donate
$1 for every $2 donated by a member up to a total of $500 for $1000
donated to NH&R between November 1 and December 15, 2012.
Remember that NH&R is a 501(c)(3) organization and all donations are
tax deductible. Year end tax planning time!!"

WORKING DOG MEETING
Please join NCNC in making plans for the 2013 working dog year on January 6th 2013 at the Maggy’s
home in Hayward. EVERYONE is welcome, come for brunch at 10-11 and stay for the meeting to
follow. Help make decisions on judges, locations and dates. Be an active member of your club’s
working events by volunteering to Chair, Secretary or Chief Steward an event, there are plenty of jobs
to go around. Speak up to get the job you want!
Are you new to working dog? Don’t be afraid to volunteer, hands on is the best way to learn and there
are many helpful members who are always ready to help. We always look forward to seeing new
faces at the Working dog meeting!

brag, Gabe, handled by me.
I enjoyed watching the seasoned handlers strut their stuff and dogs
who didn’t pass the last test rise to the challenge and pass this test.
We had a wide range of experienced dogs and handlers which
provided the spectator a wonderful representation of what can be
accomplished. Again, congratulations! I also want to state that I
know our 7th entrant will pass his next attempt, he was so close.

IN MEMORY OF CHEWIE
Chewbacca passed away Monday Nov 5th. He was 13 yrs 10 mos old.
He died peacefully in his sleep between 3 pm and 6 pm. I fed both he
and Wookie some cookies about 3 pm and Chewie was fine. I prepared
dinner for he and Wookie about 6 pm. Wookie ate his. I looked out the
window and it appeared Chewie was sleeping on the lawn. I called
from the house with no response. I went out to get him and he was
dead.
Needless to say Deb, Wookie and I are grieving, but are extremely
happy that Chewie passed on his own terms.

Chewie lived a good life. He traveled through 29 states and Canada. He swam in the Pacific, San Francisco Bay,
Lake Tahoe, Yellowstone Lake, Lake Huron and Joes Pond in Vermont. Of course there were other Ponds and Lakes as well.
He loved his Mountain house. He and Wookie would go out on the deck for hours in snow storms. They were Newfies when
they went out and Pyrenees when they came in.
He had his own medical insurance, along with his own Dermatologist, Cardiologist and Oral Surgeon and of course thanks go to
everyone at Redwood Vet.
He was always well cared for when he stayed at Atherton Acres in Novato thanks to Betty, Vera and their staff.
He always stayed in touch with Deborah Muzzin, his Grandmother at Abelard Kennels. Deborah told me he outlived his mother
Lola and all of his brothers and sisters that were born with him on Jan 5, 1999.

This is the season for looking beyond our own families and seeing how
we can help others in need throughout the year, and our dogs have the
perfect temperament, personality, and instincts to take care of others
and offer a paw of encouragement and hope. Patricia Wheeler’s new
book Successful Tails highlights the wonderful work that therapy dogs
do throughout the Bay area. Our own dog member Chex Mix has been
an integral part of projects in the East Bay and is highlighted in the
book. If you and your dog would like to join in helping others please see
the contacts below!
There are people who are afraid of dogs, but Chex Mix comes in and
plops down with a gentle greeting sound as if to say, “Here I am. Pet
me on my head.” He licks their hand or puts his paws up. Then they
realize he is not going to hurt them and that he actually likes them.
So the people aren’t afraid of him anymore.”
