Its official—Cabo San Lucas is back and in a big way. Never before has this resort
city on the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula seen so much
development, and with the arrival of many top name resorts, the area will become
one of the most popular luxury destinations in the world.
It seems the devastating hurricane in 2014 offered up an amazing opportunity for
most resorts to completely remodel and new resorts to move in with massive new
developments.
I recently toured Cabo San Lucas and the surrounding area, which is now focused
on luxurious new offerings and will never again be known as just the boozy Spring
Break party town.

Swimming Pool at The Resort at Pedregal
Most of the resort area’s existing luxury hotels have reopened after extensive
renovations and are better than before including; The Resort at Pedregal, One &
Only Palmilla, Esperanza, and Las Ventanas al Paraiso, a Rosewood Resort. Strong
new hotel brands are headed to Los Cabos, such as the recently opened The Cape:
A Thompson Hotel and the upcoming The Ritz-Carlton, Auberge’s VieVage,
Starwood’s Solaz Montage, Nobu Hotel Los Cabos, Mar Adentro by Encanto and
the Hard Rock Hotel, which will all dramatically transform the coastline by end of
2017.
I have visited Cabo San Lucas many times in the past and have stayed at every
major resort on my own dollar, so I really know the best of the best. It was fun to
compile my picks for The Best of Cabo 2016.

THE BEST GOLF COURSE: EL CARDONAL AT DIAMANTE
Alongside the new hotels, a number of new golf courses are under construction as
well. They include the new Marina Course at Puerto Los Cabos by Jack Nicklaus,
due in 2016. A new Greg Norman-designed course is taking shape at Rancho San
Lucas, the latest resort development along the Pacific. It’s attached to the new
Grand Solmar Resort, and will be open in 2016.
Tiger Woods’ El Cardonal course debuted last year and he will build a third course
at the 1,500-acre Diamante resort community next year.

Influenced by the old-style courses of Southern California that he grew up playing,
Tiger’s vision was to create a course that brings back the need for strategy — with
several options to navigate each hole. The course will challenge expert players,
but it will also provide options for those with higher handicaps as well. It will truly
be accessible and fun for golfers of all skill levels.
Tiger explains, “I set up the golf strategy to make golfers think and make choices.
Regardless of your handicap, there are going to be different ways to play every
hole. Angles of approach are going to be very important and will dictate the type
of shots you should consider. I love this kind of golf.”
