WHAT IS LEADERSHIP?
Leadership is a word that comes
up often in conversations with
business professionals, in particular
during our one-on-one meetings
at the Chamber with business
and community leaders. It can
be hard to define as it means
different things to different people
and different things in different
situations.
As we stated, leadership means different things to different
people. Legendary business journalist Marshall Loeb spent
decades interviewing the greatest leaders in American
Business. Along the way, he defined these steps to effective
leadership:

Leadership is about mapping out where you need to go
to be successful. It also includes developing leadership
skills within your team, creating an environment where you
can continue that success in the long term. That’s a true
measure of great leadership.
Therefore, an effective leader is a person who does the
following:
• Creates an inspiring vision of the future. A vision
provides direction, sets priorities and provides a marker
that is measurable.
• Motivates and inspires people to engage with that
vision. It’s the leader’s ability to motivate and inspire
people that help them deliver that vision.
• Manages the delivery of that vision. There is a time to
discuss, a time to sell, a time to participate, and a time
to delegate. Knowing the approach to use and when to
use it, is key to effective leadership.
• Coaches and builds a team, so that it is more effective
at achieving the vision. A leader will ensure that team
members have the necessary skills and abilities to do
their jobs and achieve the vision.
Limit yourself to just a few key objectives. As an example, in
2015 our Chamber wants to increase our membership base,
improve our brand awareness throughout the region and
develop additional opportunities to collaborate.
Borrow the best ideas and methods from others. Did you
know General Electric was among the first to study and apply
Wal-Mart’s retailing systems?
Remember that great leaders are made, not born – usually
self-made.
Be yourself. Figure out what you’re good at and stick to it!
To become an effective leader does not just happen. It takes
time to learn by practicing key leadership skills, until they
become routine. We can all become an effective leader at
any stage of our career. Becoming more aware of our work
environment and our team’s potential is essential. We hope
this overview on leadership can be beneficial to you and your
organization.

Former Cincinnati Red, Corky Miller,
Joins Dayton Dragons Coaching Staff
The Dayton Dragons recently welcomed
former Cincinnati Red, Corky Miller, to
their coaching staff. One of the more
popular Reds players in recent years, Corky
will join another former Reds star Tom
Browning on the staff, along with manager
Jose Nieves and hitting coach Louis Bolivar.
Corky spent parts of 11 years in the Major Leagues, mostly
with the Reds. He also played for the Braves, White Sox,
Twins and Red Sox. He made his big league debut with the
Reds in 2001 and played in his final Major League game in
2013 at age 37, becoming the oldest Reds player to start a
game at catcher since 1951.
Corky adds even more MLB experience to the Dragons staff
which includes Browning, who pitched the only perfect game
in Reds history in 1988 and won a World Series in 1990,
and Nieves, who won a World Series title with the Anaheim
Angels in 2002.

Launches New Website
Planes Commercial Services, a leader in commercial
relocation including asset management, short- and longterm storage solutions, and total Move Management,
announced the launch of its new website, www.PlanesCommercialServices.com. This website introduces
the company’s new logo and a fortified approach to
communicating its core services.
Planes Commercial Services is a division of Planes
Companies, an asset-based company with more than 90
years of experience in the transportation industry. In early
2014, Planes Companies was named a 2014 “Top Workplace
in Cincinnati” award winner in the medium business
category by the Cincinnati Enquirer.
“We wanted to better define our commercial moving and
storage abilities in a way that would appeal to our customer
base,” said John Planes, CEO. “It was time our brand
reflected the growth and achievements of this division in

February Luncheon Recap
It was a typical brisk, cool afternoon in West Chester/Liberty Township for the Chamber’s February
monthly luncheon. This month’s speaker, Drew Dinkelacker of MarketingAccelerator.com (Elder High
School and Xavier University Alum) shared his marketing wisdom with an old adage many business
folks know: Pareto Theory commonly referred to as the “80/20 Rule”.
In the business world, we’ve all used the 80/20 rule to summarize different data in business that
never seems to follow any rules of equality. “Remember back in our childhood days when we all
met up with the one kid on the playground who would complain that ‘it’s not fair’?” Drew referred
to the fact that output never seems to match input in business. For example, if we all reviewed our
respective sales teams, we would never find that each sales person produces the same amount of
sales. Rather, we would more likely uncover that 80% of the sales production comes from about
20% of our sales team. He then shared with us the studies cited in Perry Marshall’s book 80/20
Sales and Marketing which considered the world economy as it relates to Gross Domestic Product.
Statistically cited in Marshall’s book, 80% of the world’s economic production was produced by
the GDP’s of 20% of the countries in the world.

Powered by this statistical knowledge, what if we could use the Pareto Theory to predict the future.
This led to another fun example which Drew referred to as “Queen of Shoes”. He had every lady
in attendance (76 in total) volunteer by standing up. Drew then calculated using the 80/20 rule
that with 76 women standing 3 of them will have over 100 pairs of shoes in their closets today.
As he asked each lady to sit down in various thresholds, when he asked for those who had 100
pairs or more in their closet today, exactly 3 were left standing (with the sole winner being Michelle
Vondrell with over 400 pairs of shoes in her “shoe room”). Hence, the 80/20 rule has statistical
significance to help us both explain and predict data.
How can we take the “Power of 80/20” to marketing, business and life? We must start by studying
our best customers (the top 20% in terms of revenue generators/referrals). “We must spend
time creating a profile of them (demographics, motivations, etc.) including understanding them
personally through social media, like Facebook.” Drew continued by emphasizing the importance
of “attacking those top 20% clients” by creating a “magnet/attraction” for them. With time being
limited in today’s entrepreneurial world, he suggested having to learn to ignore the other 80%
of our customer base who do not qualify for the top 20% in order to maximize marketing/sales
revenue results.
80/20 for life is a bit more personal. It starts with time management in today’s “e driven life”.
“We must prioritize our emails, software and other apps to uncover the top 20% of what we enjoy
most”. He encouraged us to identify the top 20% of space in our homes that we spend 80% of our
awake life in and make sure those rooms are functional and provide us with positive reinforcement.
In the wake of New Year’s resolutions for healthy living/exercising, he reminded us that 80% of
weight gain/loss comes from what we put in our mouths and nutrition rather than the hours we
spend at the gym or exercising. Finally, Drew suggested that we take time in reflecting on the top
20% of our favorite, most important and cherished things in our lives. Focus on such things and
you’ll find life-long fulfillment in both your professional and personal lives.

Walt is the managing member of The Clements Group LLC, an international
consulting firm specializing in corporate security related matters. The
Clements Group LLC focuses on intellectual property protection, brand
protection, in-depth training design and delivery and reviews/audits
of corporate security designs and organizations. Join us as we learn
about “Enhancing Personal Security at Home and Abroad:
Practicing Situational Awareness.” Walt retired as Associate Director
of Global Security for the Procter and Gamble Company in Cincinnati in
January, 2013. During his 23 year career at P&G, Walt managed every
aspect of Global Security’s mission, frequently working abroad. Walt was
instrumental in designing, developing and deploying a revised, aggressive
corporate approach to anti-counterfeiting, building a global team of experts
that dramatically enhanced P&G’s success in anti-counterfeiting, operations
with law enforcement globally. Prior to P&G Walt served 12 years as a New
Jersey police officer and six years as an FBI Special Agent in New York City.

in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is the past president of Shaw University and previously
served as dean of the School of Divinity at Howard University. He has also

in the United States and Canada and is a member and past president of
the Society of Black Religion, a nationwide think tank of scholars engaged in
studying the religious experience of African Americans. A member of the Duke
Divinity School faculty for eight years, Clarence has served on the Divinity
School Board of Visitors and as a member of the Alumni Association Board of
Directors. Elected to the Duke University Board of Trustees in 2002, Clarence
is chair of the Committee on Honorary Degrees and a member of the
Undergraduate Education Committee. He previously served on the Academic
Affairs Committee.

TOWNSHIP FIRE DEPARTMENT
The Liberty Township Board of Trustees recently promoted three part-time members of
the Fire Department to full-time firefighters/paramedics. Jon Meyer, James Montgomery
and Kyle Schauer are pictured with their families and Township Trustees at the February

JON MEYER
Jon has worked in Fire/EMS service since 1997. He earned his Associates Degree from
the University of Cincinnati and completed his Paramedic certification from Bethesda
Hospital in 2000 and his Professional Firefighter training at the Ohio Fire Academy in
2001. He began his career working for Colerain Township Department of Fire and EMS
in 1997 and has served the department for 18 years. He joined the Liberty Township
Fire Department in 1999 serving first in a volunteer capacity before being hired as a
part-time member of the department. Additionally he has served as a full-time member
of the Middletown Fire Department since April 2001.
JAMES “JIM” MONTGOMERY
Jim grew up in Fairfield and graduated from St. Xavier High School in 2002 with
academic honors. He spent time in the Army after high school and became
interested in fire service because he liked to help people. He received his
Fire and EMS training at Butler Tech and Sinclair Community College. Jim has
worked in a part-time capacity for the Colerain Township Department of Fire and
EMS for 8 years, Fairfield Township Fire Department for 7 years, Liberty Township
Fire Department for 3 years and the Trenton Fire Department for 2 years.
KYLE SCHAUER
Kyle grew up in Mason and graduated from Mason High School in 2004.
He continued his education at Cincinnati State receiving his fire and EMS
certifications and then his Associates Degree in Fire Service Technology. He
began his career as a part-time member of the City of Fairfield Fire Department
in 2008 and joined the Liberty Township Fire Department in a part-time
capacity in 2010. Kyle was hired as a full-time firefighter/paramedic for the City
of Erlanger, Kentucky in July 2014.

Local Schools
I wanted to take some time to thank
the members of the Lakota Local
School District Board of Education, for
everything they do for our schools, and
also share some information about
how school boards work in Ohio that is
not always understood.
  

There are five individuals on the school board: Lynda O’Connor (president), Todd
Parnell (vice president), and members Ben Dibble, Ray Murray and Julie Shaffer. Each
year in January the board selects its own officers. Ben and Julie have also served
terms as president.
Board members are not employees of the school district, and they don’t have offices
here. I know this is a common misunderstanding, because we routinely have people
come to our Central Office and ask to speak to a school board member.

Also, unlike many other elected office holders, they are not paid, other than a
nominal meeting stipend. Yet they all do a large amount of work. There are usually two
school board meetings every month. Every board member also serves on one or more
board committees, which have their own meetings. And board members often do work
individually, with myself or some of our senior administrators in the school district.
They spend time at home reading over material and preparing for meetings. And they
all attend many concerts, plays, athletic events, award ceremonies, etc., throughout
the school district.
They do all this to help ensure that the children in our community receive an
outstanding education. They also work, as we all do, to be careful stewards of the
resources provided by the community.
Our school board plays a significant role in the success of our school district. I join
our community in thanking them for their public service.

Cinda’s husband left his career to join his wife so they could work together and build

employees: “Only do a background check on people that you are

Leadership 21 Re-Cap
Leadership 21 had the pleasure of engaging a number of organizations who provided an overview of
the services available in our community to help others. Neighborhood Housing Services of Hamilton
graciously hosted the leadership group and gave us some insight into their mission as a nonprofit
community development organization to revitalize and build communities. The group then left for first
hand tours of Shared Harvest Foodbank and the Reach Out Lakota facilities learning about the many
volunteers who work to assist those in need of food and other necessities. A subsequent field tour of the
Boys and Girls Club of West Chester/Liberty provided an insight into the options to help the children in
our community. The afternoon was filled with presentations from the Butler County United Way, Sojourner
Recovery Services, Big Brothers Big Sisters, S.E.L.F. (Supports to Encourage Low Income Families), and
the Butler County Board of Developmental Disabilities. It was an enlightening day for all and it’s truly
amazing how many caring volunteers and community organizations strive to help those in need.
