Children’s Hospital Foundation
T
he purpose of the Children's Hospital Foundation is “to
further the physical, mental and social well-being of children and
their families in Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec by raising,
managing and disbursing funds.”
1999 marked a very exciting milestone for the Foundation; revenue
topped more than $10 million. This was accomplished, in a large part,
by CHEO's Dream of a Lifetime lottery that featured 15,000 additional
tickets bringing the total to 40,000 and $1.4 million in prizes. The gift
planning program also had another very strong year.
Many third-party events benefitting CHEO did very well. During the
year, more than 150 of these were held including the new Country
Cares for Kids radiothon hosted by Y105 and the Tried and True Hike
for CHEO.
Each year, the Foundation's main event is the CJOH Telethon for
CHEO. Our Telethon is part of the North America wide Children’s
Miracle Network (CMN Canada). All funds raised locally benefit
CHEO. In 1999, the Telethon raised a record $2.6 million.
Funds raised by the Children's Hospital Foundation provide extras to
the Hospital making a good facility into a world-class health centre.
Each year, the Hospital identifies major areas that require funding.
These have traditionally fallen into the following areas:
• Research start-up grants,
• Equipment,
The Foundation also commits approximately $900,000 per year to the
CHEO Research Institute for distribution to researchers starting new
projects. The Research Institute’s Science Committee awards these
funds. CHEO researchers are conducting research into Autism,
Diabetes, pain management, genetic disorders, mental health
problems and Cancer.
Foundation funding helps enhance the paediatric nature of the
Hospital. This is accomplished through improvements to the physical
environment such as child-friendly decorations and play parks.
• Family emergency needs and
Some funding is made available to the CHEO Social Work department
for families who are in crisis and need short-term financial assistance
to make it through a difficult period.
• Enhancements to the paediatric nature of CHEO including
books, toys, games, etc.
In summary, the Foundation provides funding to the Hospital on a
priority basis.
The Hospital and the Foundation Board collaborate to distribute the
funds where the needs are greatest. In the past few years, the Hospital
has given priority to replacing and upgrading aging equipment. The
Medical Advisory Committee reviews submissions from all Hospital
departments for new pieces of equipment and attempts to establish
the most urgent priorities.

25th Anniversary Celebrations
C
HEO and the CHEO Foundation celebrated
their 25th anniversaries in 1999 with a year-long
birthday party.
A January kickoff breakfast hosted by the CHEO Foundation
fêted former employees. Other events included the
“Sweetheart Celebration” that provided a Valentine’s lunch
for employees and volunteers and a scavenger hunt
highlighted support areas throughout the Hospital. The First
Annual Looney Tunes Show, an employee lip-syncing and
talent show, was an overwhelming success.
CHEO welcomed everyone to the party May 16 with open
house tours, balloon rides, music and cake. CHEO donors
sent best wishes on birthday-cake candle cutouts to the
Hospital as part of the pre-Telethon appeal. On May 17, the
anniversary of the official opening date, service awards were
presented and an alumni tea recognized retired staff,
including renaming the employee recognition award after
Mrs. Winnie Bickerton, CHEO’s first employee.
The CJOH Telethon for CHEO had an anniversary theme and
CHEO Bear and the children sang happy birthday together at
the annual Teddy Bears’ Picnic. Foundation
finance VP Dan Holland was one of
99 employees who celebrated
25 years of service to the Hospital.
Permanent reminders of the
anniversary are the memory
garden located in the play
park next to the OttawaCarleton Children’s Treatment
Centre and the Hospital
lobby’s wall of fame. An
anniversary time capsule is
buried in the memory garden. The
capsule, to be opened in the year
2024, features construction photos and
names of special people who have helped
CHEO grow.

Message from the Chair
O
n behalf of the board of the Foundation, I would like to
thank the many donors and supporters for their contributions
to our Children’s Hospital.
We capped our 25th year with a record-breaking $10 million dollars.
This is a truly remarkable achievement that literally thousands of
people played a role in making happen.
Throughout the year, we had a number of special events to mark
the Hospital's 25th anniversary. We installed a special donor board
that recognizes the names of the founding fathers and mothers of
the Hospital. At the Foundation, we expanded our Dream of a
Lifetime lottery to 40,000 tickets and we had numerous community
fund-raising events that incorporated the 25th anniversary into their
activities.
As to the future, the Foundation board has combined efforts with
those of the Hospital’s board of trustees to ensure a coordinated and
cohesive approach to helping our children at the Hospital. Together
we have launched a capital fund-raising campaign that is over
and above our annual fund raising. The Promise Campaign is
different because it is about making a major commitment to our
Hospital’s future.
You will hear more of this campaign throughout the year and more
from our Campaign Chair Arnie Vered. We would like to express
our appreciation to Arnie and his team of volunteers who will
oversee the $19 million campaign. These funds will be combined
with Ministry funding to cover the costs of building requirements,
new programs and research initiatives.
CHEO remains a very special part of our community. I want to
thank the staff of the Foundation who work tirelessly everyday with
community partners to raise funds for the Hospital. It is our honor
as Foundation board members to be entrusted with helping ensure
the Hospital has the necessary financial resources to carry it forward
into the next millennium. Thanks to everyone who helps make a
difference for our children and youth.
