RIVER VALLEY FORD DONATION!
The Glenwood City School District Backpack Program has received a generous donation from River Valley Ford, Baldwin, WI. We would like to thank
Rick Ohman for choosing our program for his donation. The Backpack Program provides child-friendly non-perishable food items to students on weekends and during vacations. Coupons are also provided for bread, milk, or
eggs at the local grocery store. This program is operated in conjunction with
West Cap and serves approximately 75 children and their families. One
hundred percent of the funding for the program is through generous donations from area businesses, churches, school organizations and families.

A MESSAGE FROM SUPERINTENDENT
The beautiful fall weather with
warm southern breezes and the
changing color of leaves will soon
lead to the gray dreariness of November and that dirty word for
some---snow! However, along with
anything else, change is perceived differently based
upon your perspective. Some can hardly wait for the
changing of the season because it brings deer hunting,
ice fishing, and snowmobiling. What is probably more
important is to have things to look forward to and good
people to spend time with.
Good people, things to look forward to, and improvements are the core of what happens within our school.
We just finished homecoming week, led by Tina Rasmussen and the student council. The students showed great
school spirit throughout the week. Showing of school
spirit is not limited to just our students or homecoming. Other examples I have recently witnessed are the
hosting of a dunk tank as a post prom fundraiser, the
meeting of the Topper Partnership Foundation Board
preparing for the upcoming Terror in the Glen Run, and
two large student band groups marching in the Rustic
Lore Parade led by Matt Lamb. It is great to be a Topper!
Writing an article for Hilltopper Highlights has been a struggle for me
over the past year simply because
I am never sure what to write about. I have addressed
this issue before – should I present the reader with important dates and times along with upcoming events
that I feel they should be aware of or should I continue
along the lines of sharing observations that I make as we
move through the school year? I believe that I have been
able to be consistent in delivering a message focused
on the culture of the school, all in an effort to share my
perspective on the change that continues to take place.
This month’s issue was less challenging to write
as there is so much to be inspired by at the
start of a school year. I would like to draw attention to some of these inspirational items that can
be found at Glenwood City High/Middle School.
•Teacher/Learning Teams – The reason that school
starts later this year… Each Wednesday before the
start of the school day, staff members have been provided with time to meet in teacher/learning teams
(TLTs) where the focus has been placed on improving student performance on standardized tests. To

The school district annual meeting was held on September 14. Even though not finalized with state aid and
evaluation numbers, the projected all school levy will be
$2,088,295 leading to a mill rate of 0.00915. This is
a decrease from last year’s number even with the additional levy for the successful referendum. I would like
to thank the community for their financial support of our
students. One area that I would like to see us improve
upon is the open enrollment student numbers. We currently have 25 more students open enroll out than in.
This negatively impacts us annually by approximately
$170,000.
Improvements also continue to happen. Our teaching
staff are working in teaching and learning teams to further refine instructional practice, define curriculum standards, and create assessments while collaboratively
supporting our student growth. Physical improvements
are also being completed and planned for. As previously reported, our technology servers, switches, access
points, and surveillance cameras were all upgraded this
summer. Currently, the excavation work has begun for
the new softball field east of the lower high school parking lot and the design of the new HVAC system and selection of contractor to do the work is in progress. Conceptual designs have also been created of the new office
spaces that will begin construction in the spring.

I would like to end my article by quoting a middle school
student who moved to Glenwood from another school
district. He said, “My other school felt like a school, here
it feels like family.”
An incredible donation, from Amy and Dan Dopkins
of Bobolink Nursery, is also set to take place this fall.
This donation will consist of twenty-four trees being
planted on school grounds, primarily on the athletics’
complex near the football field and concession stand
further enhancing a facility that we can be proud of.
•Bell Schedule – The implementation of a new bell
schedule has been complicated by a glitch in our actual bells as they continue to work inconsistently (we
have been without bells for all or a part of seven days
up to this point). The new bell schedule has allowed
for the implementation of class and co-curricular meetings to take place during the school day and it appears
that numbers of students getting involved in these organizations continues to increase. We have also had
the opportunity to implement a Drop Everything And
Read (D.E.A.R.) period each Thursday which encourages students and staff to read for leisure for twentyfive minutes while having no other responsibilities.
These items are just a few of the great things that
are happening here at Glenwood City High/Middle
School. I would encourage you to view our web page
in order to stay current on events that are continuing
to move us forward. If you have other items that deserve our attention and could be highlighted, please
feel free to send them to me at your convenience.
While the school year is just beginning and beginnings are connected to excitement, I am hopeful
that the excitement will continue on for the remainder of the school year. We have much to be proud
of in our schools and we should continue with the
excitement that accompanies “showing them off”.
•Athletic Upgrades – Friday, September 18 saw about
one-third of the school forest removed in order to make
way for a new softball field. This field is slated to be
graded and seeded before the snow flies and has an intended opening date of March 2017. In addition to the
new field, you will see new scoreboards being installed
as well – at both the softball and baseball fields. These
scoreboards promise to be first class editions that will
complement the beautiful football facility that was installed nearly three seasons ago.

Students continue to REACH for the Top by demonstrating respectful, responsible, excelling, always safe, caring and honest behaviors. To kick off the school year,
students met in the gymnasium to participate in a
REACH community-building event featuring the theme
of REACHing for the Top, Together we REACH. You are
invited to personally see their community project posted
in the lobby. Students and staff will be living this theme
every day. At the end of each quarter we hope to celebrate our community accomplishments with a school
wide reward event!
You are always invited to visit school and say hello or request an appointment to discuss concerns or ask questions. Your involvement is a critical component driving
excellence in all that Glenwood City Elementary School
aims to achieve. One way to become more involved is
through joining the GCE Parent and Teacher Committee
(PTC). This group will meet several times throughout the
school year to plan and facilitate events to support learning.

Literacy development continues to be an area of focus
at GCE. You are invited to help by encouraging reading at
home. Research shows that the single most important
activity for building the knowledge required for success
in reading is reading aloud to children and having them
read to you.
The 100 Mile Club® is coming to GCE! This club provides
the opportunity to run or walk 100 miles at school during a single school year and is open to all students and
staff. Regular physical fitness improves readiness to
learn, helps children meet education outcomes, incorporates exercise as part of our daily routines, builds selfesteem and improves the overall health of children. Participation forms went home with students in September.
Students will have opportunities to walk before school,
during recess, and for special school events. Miles will

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL
It’s hard to believe we are already nearing the end of
the first month of school! All of our 1st through 8th
graders have completed the Fall round of STARS testing. It went really smooth thanks to the teachers and
students! All parents who had children in grades 3-8
last year should have recently received the results

GCE has moved to a trimester grade-reporting calendar.

There is NO PARKING in front of GCE. For our children’s
safety the north drive is a drop off and pick up lane only.
Drivers are asked to stay in their vehicles and pull up
to the curb to drop off or pick up students. Parking and
backing-up create a dangerous situation for students
that are walking or biking. There are four visitor parking
spaces on the south side of the school for use if you
need to enter the building.
To maintain a safe school environment all school entrances are now locked throughout the school day. Use
the monitor system to announce your visit and gain access to the school. Upon entering the building please
stop by the office to check-in and receive a name badge.
To minimize confusion at the end of the day we ask all
parents, guardians, and caregivers to meet their students in the lobby for pick up.
With the onset of the fall season it is important to make
sure students are prepared to go outside for recess.
Unless it is raining we will be going outside for recess.
Please send a jacket with students. Tennis shoes are
also preferred for outside play.

results. Again if you did not get them or you have
any questions, please feel free to contact me. Finally,
looking back at this first month in my new role in the
district, I can truly say we have some great kids here
at GCSD! While I am no longer in the classroom, I am
still always greeted with warm smiles, friendly hellos
and sometimes even a hug from the students!! I am
looking forward to a great year!
FREE IMMUNIZATION CLINIC – TUESDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2015
St. Croix County Public Health will be offering a free immunization clinic at the Glenwood City School on Tuesday, October 13, 2015. Immunizations available will
be: Tdap, Meningococcal, HPV and the flu vaccine. Tdap is required for all students entering 6th grade. Meningococcal and HPV are recommended for all students over 12 years of age. All other students (4K-12) may receive flu vaccine, either by injection or nasal spray. Parents much complete a permission form a
soon as possible so enough vaccine can be ordered for our school. The permission form is available in the nurse’s office or on the school district’s web page.

High School: Class of 2016
Seniors planning to further their education beyond high
school have been busy fine tuning their plans and sending out applications. If applications haven’t been sent
yet, plan to do so as soon as possible (many priority
deadlines are December 1). Please stop in or give me a
call if you have any questions about this process (2654266, ext.7467).
Class of 2017: upcoming events
Juniors considering education beyond high school have
an opportunity to attend the Wisconsin Education Fair at
UW-Eau Claire on October 7. The Wisconsin Education
Fairs have over 100 representatives from colleges, technical colleges, universities, trade schools and armed
forces. More information can be found at www.wefs.org.
PSAT- Students interested in taking the Pre-SAT (PSAT)
exam on Wed. Oct.14 at school can contact me to sign
up, if they haven’t done so already. The PSAT is an optional exam, typically taken by juniors. The score results
give input about where a student is at toward college
readiness. The PSAT is required to get in the running
for the National Merit Scholarship. Check out www.collegeboard.com for more information. The cost is $15.
ASVAB- The ASVAB will be offered at school on Wednesday, October 28. The ASVAB is a free aptitude test focusing on skills that are important to future training and
job performance. The ASVAB is needed for any student
considering the military http://www.military.com/ASVAB. Students not interested in the military may also
take the ASVAB for the career information in addition to
using it as a practice test for college placement exams.
