A Message from the Principal:
Commitment to Learning for ALL!
On behalf of Chardon Middle School, I wish you and your family a Happy Holidays!
The month of December has become very busy for our Chardon Middle School
students as they prepare for holiday concerts and holiday giving. Our students
participate in a variety of community activities to give back to others within the
Geauga County community. The support from our families and students is
overwhelming to witness and I am sure this year will be no different.
Student Council has introduced “coin wars” to CMS. The teams of students are
competing against one another while raising money to give to Chardon families in
need during the holidays.
The Student Climate Committee has designated December 18, 2015 as a day of selfreflection and service for Chardon Middle School. Students will be participating in a
variety of activities including treats for troops (gift bags to active service members),
team building activities, and reviewing ways to build character.
The holiday chorus concert will be December 9, 2015, at 7:00 p.m. in the Park
Elementary School auditorium. This is typically a well attended event, so please
arrive early to ensure a parking space and a seat. We look forward to seeing you!
The holiday band concert was held on December 2, 2015, at 7:00 p.m. in the
Chardon Middle School gymnasium. The bands sounded great under the direction
of Ms. Paroubek. The gymnasium was filled with onlookers and our students did
not disappoint anyone!

Chardon Middle School. It is updated regularly to keep you informed. Please be
sure to follow me on twitter at @ChardonMiddle for the most up to date
information at CMS. I am starting an initiative to reach 1K followers by the end of
the school year, please consider being 1 of the 1K.

A Message from the Assistant Principal:
This is a reminder that students are to begin entering the building at
7:05am. There has been a change to the morning routine here at CMS.
Announcements are now played at approximately 7:27am to allow for
increased time for Mod 1/2/(3) classes. The tardy bell is still 7:30am.
Students receive detentions at approximately 4 and 8 detentions. After
school detentions are from 2:33-4:00pm. At 12 detentions students typically
receive a Saturday School.
Please remind your child of the dress expectations here at CMS. The expectations
are located at the bottom of the following website- HERE and on page 7 of the
student’s planner. Students are allowed to have their cell phones at school. The cell
phones are to be put on SILENT (NOT VIBRATE). If a student is seen using the cell
phone in class without a teacher’s permission it may be taken and sent to the office
for a parent to pick up. Students are subject to disciplinary consequences for
misuse of electronics (cell phone, Chromebook, iPod).

From October 1 through March 17, 2015, all purchases made with a Giant Eagle Advantage Card will earn
points for CMS. Registering is easy. Just follow the following steps:

2. Enter your Giant Eagle Advantage Card® number (which appears under the bar code).
3. Enter the school code. Done! Please encourage your extended family and friends to register too.

As a member of Heinen's Tasteful Rewards™ Program, when you shop at Heinen's you can help area
schools through the school donation program. Up to 1% of your qualified purchases during September to
April can be donated annually by Heinen's. The Teaming Up for Education Program is a Tasteful Rewards™

Parents and Guardians are able to report their child’s absence, early
dismissal, or late arrival using an automated voicemail system. Parents
and Guardians are asked to report their child’s absence no later than
9:00 am on the day of absence. (Absences you are aware of, may be
called in prior to the day of the actual absence.)
When reporting an absence on the attendance hotline, please be
prepared to clearly state the following information:

Student’s first and last name

Spelling of the student’s last name

Grade level of student

Date of absence, time of late arrival or early dismissal time

Reason for absence, late arrival, or early dismissal

Name of parent or guardian recording the absence
FALL STUDENT-LED CONFERENCES
Our first round of conferences for the school year is complete. For some of you, this was
your first experience with student-led conferences. We would like your feedback
regarding the student-led conference and conferences in general. Thank you to those of
you who have already shared your opinion via the survey on our Chardon Middle School
Weebly site. If you have not yet completed the survey, please take a moment to share
your opinion by completing this very brief survey regarding conferences. Thank you in

It was great to see so many of you at conferences. The purpose of student-led conferences was
to have your child take ownership for his/her own progress in each class. We hope that your
child has set some measurable short term and long term goals for the rest of the school year.
Please continue to remind your child to come prepared to every class every day. This is the
time of year that school supplies might need to be “refreshed.” Some good “stocking stuffers”
include:
Ø pens (blue, black, red)
Ø pencils
Ø erasers
Ø loose-leaf paper
Ø independent reading books (check out Mrs. Rosengard’s and Mrs. Haeberle’s websites for
recommendations)
Ø folders
Ø Mrs. Haeberle’s and Mrs. Rosengard’s LA students may need a new composition
(black/white) book for second semester (ask your child how far along they are in their daily
journal).
REMINDERS:



HOMEWORK- Students should be writing down ALL their homework in their assignment
notebooks - it is their responsibility. There should be something written for every class,
every day. Teacher websites should be the back-up in case a student is absent or
forgets.
ABSENT? - If a student is absent, it is his/her responsibility to check Teacher websites
for missing work. It is the student’s responsibility to make up the work in a timely
manner (1 day out, 1 day to make up work; 2 days out, 2 days, etc)
MATERIALS – Please encourage your child to CHARGE his/her Chrome book nightly.
Students need some basic materials for ALL classes and are expected to bring them
daily: paper, pencils, pens, red pen, textbooks, independent reading book, calculator
(MATH)

News from 7A
Happy Holidays to All!
We enjoyed seeing you at conferences. Please feel free to check Infinite
Campus, our Weebly website, or contact us if you are concerned about your child’s
grade.
Now is the time where students begin to run out of materials, such as pens,
pencils, and notebook paper. Please make sure your child’s folders, binders,
headphones, and Interactive Notebooks are still in working condition. Also, please
make sure your child has a scientific calculator. These materials make great
stocking stuffers, the kids love them, and the teachers will appreciate it!
Victorian London comes alive in language arts as the classic story A Christmas
Carol is the reading of choice. The students will enjoy Dickens at his finest and
learn about the Victorian society. Students will be working on a mini research
project and have a novel due on December 18th.
In math class, students will determine scale factors and proportional
relationships. We will also be diving into the world of algebra.
Science will be knee deep studying ocean current, tides, and moon phases for the
month of December.
In social studies, we will finish up learning about the history of ancient Rome and
creating a project on enduring impacts of this time period. Our next expedition will
be the Byzantine Empire.

Team 8B News
Remember to stock up on pencils, pens, folders, and notebook paper. Supplies
may be running low during this time of the year and they make great stocking
stuffers!
In science, students will be investigating the physical world through the study of
physics when we come back from break.. We have learned about velocity,
acceleration, and force. We will be looking into friction, gravity, and other
attractions. Right now, we are wrapping up Earth science and getting ready for the
big mid-term on December 15.
In Pre-Algebra, the students will be graphing linear equations by creating a table of
solutions, identifying the constant rate of change and the y-intercept. The children
are also solving multi-step equation with and without fractions, solving an equation
having two variables, and solving word problems dealing with the system of
equations.
In language arts, in preparation for Flowers for Algernon, we examined our
different areas of intelligence and analyzed our strongest areas. We will next
research an argument and conduct an in-class debate as well as research the
different areas of the brain. English I is reading The Lord of the Flies; the students’
discussions about plot and theme have been lively and in-depth. Our study of the
grammar and usage continues as the students learn how to apply rules in their
writing.
The students have completed discussing the foundational documents in American
History. They can describe how the American Government was formed and the
principles which guide it. Next, students will discover how these principles are
practiced. During early presidential administrations Washington, Adams, and
Jefferson will put into practice the structure of the United States Constitution.
From Nurse Strickland:
Scoliosis Screening
Last month, all students enrolled in first semester physical education classes participated in a postural
screening conducted by Mrs. Strickland RN, the school nurse. Students’ backs were checked for signs of
possible scoliosis, a lateral curvature of the spine. Referral letters were mailed home to those students
who failed the screening. The letters recommend that parents have their child examined by their
physician. Students having physical education second semester and those students without PE this year
will be screened later in the school year.

Ski Club!
CMS Ski Club is getting ready for winter! We will be
skiing/snowboarding on Saturdays from 9am-1pm starting in January.
See attached flier for more details. There are additional fliers outside
the school office.

DRAMA CLUB
The Chardon Middle School Drama Club, sponsored by the Geauga
Lyric Theater, has started up and is ready for our best season yet!
This fall through winter we will be preparing for our January
production of Romeo and Juliet, Restaurant Wars. The club meets
every Thursday after school until 4:45. This year, we are excited to
announce that we have 40 students involved, our largest cast yet!
Five interns from Chardon High School will also be assisting us
throughout the show. The audition and casting process is
underway as we begin our weekly rehearsals. We are excited as
ever for Drama Club this semester!
We hope you can join us at our show in January!
8th Grade Washington DC Trip

If you were unable to attend the September 17th meeting regarding
the 8th grade Washington DC class trip, you can find information and

School Counseling Department
The CMS Counseling Department would like to wish everyone a wonderful winter
break and happy holidays. As students are completing the end of the first
semester this December, we wish them the best with finishing out their
academics. Any questions please contact the teachers or counselors directly.
As we focus into the New Year and the second semester, we will initiate our
career guidance piece. We invite any parent or community member to contact
our counselors if they are interested in participating with our career-focused
counseling program. This focus will represent current and future interests,
educational needs necessary for career fields, and transitions of current content
into higher levels of education. It’s important for students to connect what they
are learning in middle school to what it means for their futures.
Through the Counseling Department, community service is an initiative the
counselors would like to share with the students. In September, CMS staff
volunteered by providing a meal at Ronald McDonald House for 55 families. This
was a wonderful experience. Throughout the school day during November,
students were given the opportunity to help volunteer their time to sorting and
organizing clothes for a community organization. The organization was grateful
for the students' help. CMS also helped collect items for the Animal Rescue
Village as support to our community. As we continue to build what community
service is and the benefits of volunteering in our community, the counselors
would like to invite CMS parents to join us. OnJanuary 16th, we will visit Ronald
McDonald House again, to cook for the families that stay there. This is open to
any 10 parents or guardians (no students yet) of CMS students who would like to
volunteer their time. Please contact Pam Bobinski for further details.
