SOS Letter - 2016
February 28th, 2016
Dear Suns of Sphairee Donors,
As Ponacka prepares to celebrate its 70th summer, it’s time to again ask for your support
of Suns of Sphairee. To begin with, I want to thank all of you who donated so generously
last year. Your support provided the opportunity for Seth, Evan and Dylan to spend the
month of August at camp. I’d be grateful if you’d consider donating to the Suns of
Sphairee fund, which for 33 years has allowed boys recommended by Big Brothers and
Big Sisters of Peterborough to go to camp.
In the thank you letters the boys sent to
donors last summer, Dylan, Evan and Seth
wrote about their cabinmates, PHL, Sunday
games, canoe trips, mountain biking, moose
sightings and much more. These letters
offered brief glimpses into their month at
camp, but it’s the impact of these experiences
that is the magic of camp. Living together
with a group teaches boys how to get along
with others and helps to build valuable
friendships. Completing the 3 km portage on the Smoke to Whitney canoe trip in
Algonquin Park is an accomplishment that helps to build confidence and resilience.
As campers return summer after summer, the camp experience evolves with each
progressive year at camp. Moving up to tent row and being amongst the oldest campers
instills the responsibility to be a role model, whether it’s on the PHL court or during an
evening game. This progression through several summers at camp assists with healthy
development through childhood and adolescence. All three boys are eager to return for
what will be Seth’s 4th and Evan and Dylan’s 3rd summer on the shores of Baptiste Lake.
The Suns of Sphairee fund gives us who hold such a strong belief in Ponacka, a chance to
generously share the Ponacka experience with those who otherwise wouldn’t have the
chance to go to camp. To mark Ponacka’s 70th summer, donors who contribute $200 or
more, before April 30th will receive a free 70th Anniversary Ponacka t-shirt. All donors
will receive a tax receipt as well as a thank you note from the boys to let you know about
their time at camp. Thank you very much and I wish you all the best!
Kind regards,
Gordon Dunlop (’92-’11)
