reat Lent - Journey to
the Resurrection
Great Lent starts always
with Forgiveness Sunday. It
reminded us of the fact that we
all need forgiveness and we all
have the
responsibility to forgive others if we hope to have a
spiritually (and psychologically)
healthy life.
Forgiveness brings us together. Relationships that have been
bruised are healed through
genuine forgiveness. God loved
us so much that He gave us His
only begotten Son, in order to
save us (John 3:16) and offer us
forgiveness when we had fallen
into perpetual sin.
Lent is the time of preparation for Holy Week, the Passion,
Death, and Resurrection of
Christ. As Christ Jesus prepared
40 days in the wilderness before
starting
His
ministry,

was able to do for us. Sundays
during Great Lent are designated with a special “Theme.”
The first Sunday is called the
Sunday of Orthodoxy (March 20,
this year). It is a celebration of
the triumph over those who
wanted to, and in many cases
did, destroy and expel iconography from our faith over the
course of over a century. We celebrate with those who stood up
for what was right. In Church we
must certainly appreciate what
these brave Orthodox Christians
did before us.
The second Sunday is for St.
Gregory Palamas. It was he who
bore witness that in this life we
can become a part of God’s uncreated light and by the grace of
God, graft ourselves to His body.

He fought against the idea among those
who thought that the only way to know God
was by the intellect.
The third Sunday is dedicated to the Adoration of the Cross. On the halfway point of
Great Lent, when our fasting is beginning to
be exhausting. When we might forget what we
are doing and why we are doing it, we are reminded of the purpose of our journey as we
venerate the Cross as the symbol by which
death is destroyed and by which we must take
up in order to be saved, “Then Jesus said to
His disciples, ‘If anyone desires to come after
Me, let him deny himself, and take up his
cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to
save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his
life for My sake will find it. For what profit is
it to a man if he gains the whole world, and
loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in

exchange for his soul?” (Matthew 16:24-26). We must
press on even when it is difficult.
The Fourth Sunday is in remembrance of St. John
of the Ladder, of St. Catherine’s Monastery on Mount
Sinai, who wrote The Ladder of Divine Ascent, which
deals with the spiritual struggles of one climbing the
ladder to heaven.
The Fifth and final Sunday before Palm Sunday is
dedicated to St. Mary of Egypt. Her wicked and evil
ways physically restrained her from entering the
Church. By means of true repentance (change) she
dedicated her life to God and is recognized as a saint
today. Her example shows us that no amount of sins
can keep someone away from God’s love and His Kingdom, if that person truly repents with an open heart
toward God. As we grow in our relationships with
others, we journey toward a greater relationship with
God. Great Lent is a journey that helps strengthen
that relationship with others and with God. As we approach Holy Week having prepared through prayer
and fasting, we are given the opportunity to live, die
and rise with Christ as the Victor over death.

...şi devine arvună şi hrană a vieţii veşnice:
„Cel ce mănâncă Trupul Meu şi bea Sângele
Meu are viaţă veşnică“ (Ioan 6, 54) „şi la judecată nu va veni, ci s‑a mutat din moarte la
viaţă“ (Ioan 5, 24).
Sfânta Împărtăşanie este „Pâinea cea
vie“ (Ioan 6, 48), „care s‑a pogorât din
cer“ (Ioan 6, 51). Ea este şi „medicamentul
nemuririi“. Sfânta Împărtăşanie este, aşadar,
împreună‑vieţuirea duhovnicească a noastră
cu Mântuitorul, Care Îşi face „locuinţă“ în noi.
Ea este întărirea noastră sufletească şi
trupească! Aşa ne arată Marele Vasile:
„Stăpâne, Iubitorule de oameni, Care ai murit
şi ai înviat şi ne-ai dăruit nouă aceste
înfricoşătoare Taine, spre binefacerea şi sfinţirea sufletelor şi a trupurilor , spre luminarea
ochilor inimii mele, spre împăcarea sufleteştilor mele puteri, spre credinţă neînfruntată,
spre dragoste nefăţarnică, spre desăvârşirea
înţelepciunii, spre paza poruncilor Tale, spre
adăugirea dumnezeiescului Tău har şi spre
dobândirea Împărăţiei Tale. Ca, în sfinţenia
Ta, cu acestea fiind păzit , să nu mai viez mie,
ci Ţie, Stăpânului şi Binefăcătorului nostru“ .
În înţelegerea profundă, autentică, Sfânta
Împărtăşanie este anticiparea, încă de aici, a
vieţuirii în Împărăţia lui Dumnezeu. Este o
înviere continuă, în această viaţă supusă
decăderii noastre. Este puterea şi lucrarea
mântuitoare a Domnului, prin iubirea Tatălui
şi cu împreună‑lucrarea Sfântului Duh, în
Biserică, pentru învierea noastră din păcat.
Este începutul îndumnezeirii noastre, după
har, dar şi ajutor perceptibil, în trupul slăbit
şi în sufletul ostenit de suferinţele vieţuirii
egoiste şi păcătoase. Precum Hristos‑Domnul
a intrat în cele mai întunecoase laturi ale
morţii şi i-a eliberat pe cei robiţi de ea, tot
astfel intră, prin Sfânta Împărtăşanie, şi „în
toate încheieturile, în rărunchi şi în inimă şi
arde spinii tuturor păcatelor, curăţeşte
sufletul, sfinţeşte gândurile şi oasele; numărul
deplin al celor cinci simţuri îl luminează;

peste tot (...) pătrunde; curăţeş- te, spală şi
îndreptează, înţelepţeşte şi
luminează“.
Pentru a ajunge la această culme a
bucuriei împărtăşirii cu Domnul este firească pregătirea atentă şi curăţirea profundă,
spre însănătoşirea reală şi învierea concretă
din amorţeala patimilor şi din moartea
spirituală a păcatului. De aceea, aşa cum
suntem preocupaţi în curăţirea, zi de zi, a
trupului şi a îmbrăcăminţii exterioare, ori a
casei în care vieţuim, cu atât mai mult, se
cuvine a ne curăţa pe dinlăuntru, prin post,
rugăciune şi, mai ales, prin milostenie, aşa
cum fac mulţi în casele, în parohiile unde
vieţuiesc bunii noştri creştini.
Iar la luminatul Praznic al Învierii
suntem invitaţi să ne arătăm mai întâi
„hainele albe şi curăţate“ ale Botezului şi
luminile faptelor bune, asemenea unor faruri strălucitoare care ni‑L arată pe
Mântuitorul dornic să ne invite la Masa, la
Prânzul Împărăţiei.
El ne ajută prin Taina Sfintei Spovedanii
individuale, la duhovnic, doctorul nostru
sufletesc cel mai apropiat, rânduit de
Biserică, să ieşim din întunericul morţii
păcatelor, prin pocăinţă sinceră, la starea
de curăţie şi să ne unească în lumină.
Paştile înseamnă însă trecerea dincolo
de „lespedea“ grea de pe „mormântul“ apă‑
sărilor personale. Lumina care nu se stinge
este Trupul luminous al Mântuitorului, care
pătrunde, prin Sfânta Împărtăşanie, în noi
„şi amestecă în trupul nostru mireasma
Trupului Său celui de viaţă dătător.
„Sărbătoarea şi praznicul acesta n‑au nevoie de bani, nici de cheltuieli, ci de o voinţă
bună şi de un suflet bun (…). Aici nu se vinde
nimic trupesc. Aici «se vând şi se cumpără»
predicarea cuvintelor dumnezeieşti, rugăciunile
părinţilor, binecuvântările preoţilor, înţelegerea,
pacea, unirea. Duhovniceşti sunt darurile,
duhovnicesc este şi preţul! (...) Să prăznuim
praznicul acesta prea mare şi strălucit, în care a
înviat Hristos! Să‑l prăznuim cu bucurie, dar şi
în cuvioşie! A înviat Hristos şi cu El a înviat întreaga lume! El a înviat sfărâmând legăturile
morţii!“ Şi noi vom învia!

needs.

Holy Spirit, giving us the sure
truths by which we can live,
and pointing us to the straight
and unwavering path that
leads to Heaven.
The Church is also our
measure, showing us the
standards by which every
man’s life must be judged, revealing the Christ whose
teaching and example are
the beginning and the end of
all spiritual achievement: the
perfect dimensions of life.
The Holy Orthodox Church,
the Church established by
Christ Himself and guided by
the Holy Spirit, stands ready,
not to be run by men, but to
guide and to measure us all.

Orthodox Summer CAMPS
Summer Camp is by God’s grace the crown jewel of our Youth Ministry program. Our Pan-Orthodox
camp has been flourishing since 1952. Our schedule includes worship, swimming, sports, horseback
riding, high and low ropes courses, religion groups, campfires, candle making, crafts, presentations on
missions, boating, and more! We are pleased to have several priests along with an Orthodox nun to
guide us throughout the week. With over 225 campers and 70 staff, we truly become an Orthodox
community for seven days and six nights! We rent Camp Wapogasset in Amery, Wisconsin. The
camp is located just 75 minutes Northwest of St. Mary’s.
Summer Camp Dates: July 2-8, 2016/ For 3rd through 12th graders in fall.

The camping programs offered by The Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of America are
an extension of the Church's sacred ministry to her young people. Students are given both the

to them throughout the years to come.

Diferenţa de serbare a Paştelui Ortodox şi celui Catolic
Aceste diferente cu privire la data
serbării Paştelui au creat controverse şi
dezbinări în unele Biserici. Pentru a se realiza o uniformizare a sărbătorii Paştelui, în
cadrul primului sinod ecumenic de la
Niceea, din anul 325, s-a stabilit: Paştile vor
fi serbate totdeuna duminica. Această duminică va fi imediat următoare lunii pline
de după echinocţiul de primăvară.
Această unitate a durat până la
reformă papei Grigorie al XIII-lea, care in
anul 1582 intreprinde o a treia îndreptare a
calendarului (calendarul gregorian - cu 13
zile inaite). Asa că din 1583, Răsăritul si
Apusul n-au mai serbat Pastele la aceeasi
dată decât doar din intâmplare.
Când data Paştelui iudaic (adică14 Nisan = Martie-Aprilie) cade duminica,
Paştele creştin va fi serbat duminica
următoare, pentru a nu fi serbat o dată cu
cel iudaic, dar nici înaintea acestora.
După cele două calendare, serbarea Sf.
Pasti poate varia până la cinci săptămâni.
De exemplu, anul acesta, 2016, când
Paştile Catolicilor vor fi sărbătorite în prima
duminică - pe 27 Martie (calendarul
îndreptat-Gregorian) după lună plină (23
Martie 2016) după echinopţiu de
primăvară (21 Martie); iar Paştile Ortodoxe
vor fi sărbătorite în prima duminică - pe 1
Mai (calendarul neîndreptat-Iulian) după
lună plină (22 Aprilie, 2016) după echinopţiu de primăvară (3 Aprilie = 21Martie +
13 zile). Dar nu vor fi sărbătorite în Duminica de 24 Aprilie, pentru că ar coincide cu
Pastile evreieşti (când ei sărbătoresc eliberarea din robia Egiptului si trecerea prin
Marea Roşie), ci vor fi sărbătorite duminca
următoare- pe 1 MAI - conf Sinodului 1
Ecumenic de la Niceea din 325.
CHRIST IS RISEN!
Resurrection is the day of reconciliation between God and man brought
about through Jesus Christ who is from
eternity God and born in the time and
taking flesh of the Virgin Mary.
The celebration of the resurrection
of Christ is also a celebration of our
own future resurrection. Saint Paul in
his letter to the Ephesians says “For He
Himself (Christ) is our peace … who
has broken the middle wall of separation …so as to create in Himself one
new man from the two, thus making
peace and that he might reconcile
them both to God in one body
through the cross” (2,14).
As Christ has taken our human nature, so too has He promised us a participation in the divine life.
Saint Athanasius teaches that “God
became man so that man might become like God”.
Let us therefore rejoice and be exceedingly glad in the word of the Lord
Jesus Himself “I am the resurrection
and the life. He who believes in Me,
though he may die, he shall
live” (John 11,25); and knowing and
confessing that Christ “is sitting at the
right hand of God”, let us live the days
of our time on earth seeking that
which is eternal and the gift of seeing
God as He is, and thus cried out:
Christ is risen! Truly He is risen!
