Athletes

great sportsmanship, and represent our
schools and community well.

• PHS is a member of the Ohio High
School Athletic Association.
• Participation is a privilege not a right!
• We follow all the by-laws established
by OHSAA. Standards have to be met
in order to be eligible to compete.

• Important to spend time looking over the
brochure.
– Athletes: go through checklist located at the
back of the brochure.
Co-Curricular Code of Conduct
Philosophy
• The Perrysburg Schools provide co-curricular
activities that complement the educational
and athletic development of each student.
• As representatives of Perrysburg Schools,
participants are expected to display
exemplary conduct at all times, whether or
not engaged in co-curricular activities. As
well, conformance to this code promotes the
safety and welfare of participating students.

Enforcement
• As soon as a student begins participating in a
co-curricular activity, the code of conduct must
be followed!
• Enforced during the school year, twenty-four
(24) hours a day, seven days a week, while
participant is enrolled in high school.
• In effect and enforced during schoolsupervised co-curricular activities and events
occurring over the summer break.

completion of the activity by the

Review Panel
• Established annually.
• Includes principal or assistant principal,
athletic director, assistant athletic
director, director of co-curricular
activities, a coach and activity advisor,
and the on-site drug counselor .
– Athletic Director: investigate code violations
– Panel: vote based on the findings, but may
conduct a further investigation.

Review Panel
Student/Parent Self Referral
• Violations that are admitted to by the
student and/or parent and are clear
cut will be acted upon by the athletic
director or the co-curricular director.
All other violations will be taken to
the review panel.

Review Panel
• A student charged with a violation will be given a
written notice of the violation.
• He/She may request an appeal by submitting a
written notice to the principal within 24 hours of
the decision.
– This appeal will be heard by the Review
Panel and a decision will be made about the
student’s consequences.
• He/she may request review by the Board of
Education by appealing the Review Board’s
decision in writing to the principal within 24
hours.
Co-Curricular Code of Conduct
Reinstatement
• In case of reinstatement dealing with
violations of alcohol or illegal use of drugs,
the Review Panel may review information
after the student completes a substance
abuse program and will then determine if the
student has fulfilled the requirements of the
program.
• Timeline for reinstatement:
– minimum of 6 weeks
– maximum of 11 weeks

Violations
• When a violation occurs and the
athlete is suspended, our first
concern is the well being of the
athlete.
– Do they need help?
– Is there a dependency?
– Was it just curiosity?

Violations
1. Any conduct by a participant, which
would otherwise be a violation of the
Perrysburg Schools Code of Conduct.
2. Any conduct by a participant which may
be deemed by the Review Panel to be
both of a serious nature, and a violation
of state, local, or federal criminal or
juvenile law.

Violations
3. Attendance by a participant at a party
or gathering where alcohol or illegal
drugs are available for consumption by
the participant or any underage
individual in attendance. A participant
is required to leave a party or gathering
IMMEDIATELY upon knowing of, or
detecting by use of any of the
participant’s senses, the availability of
alcohol or illegal drugs at the party or
gathering.

Violations
4. Consumption, possession, use,
purchase, concealment, or transmission
of alcohol, any controlled substance,
inhalant, paraphernalia, intoxicant or any
illegal drug, or tobacco.

Consequences
Any co-curricular participant
violating the Code of Conduct will at
a minimum receive a written
warning. The Review Panel retains
the discretion to adjust the penalty
for more serious violations, and to
determine further conditions for
reinstatement.

Drugs and Alcohol
• Violators who wish to participate in any cocurricular activity must , in addition to any
other consequence provided herein, attend
Substance Abuse counseling/education to be
arranged by the School District.
• In addition, the participant will meet
individually with the School’s-contracted
Substance Abuse Counselor and follow the
recommendations outlined by the counselor.
• Parents are encouraged to attend the
counseling sessions with their child.

Suspension
• Students enrolled in co–curricular activities
who are under suspension from the school
MAY NOT PARTICIPATE in practices,
contests, productions, performances,
meetings, field trips, etc., sponsored by the
co-curricular activity.

Transportation
• All co-curricular students will travel to
and from the scheduled event on
school transportation when provided.
• Co-curricular students can be released
after the event only by their
coach/advisor to their parents or legal
guardian in an emergency or unusual
circumstance.

Equipment
Responsibility
• All participants are financially
responsible for all board-owned
equipment or uniforms issued to the
students.
• A late/damage fee ( $20.00) will be
assessed for any
equipment/uniforms not returned by
the due date or returned damaged.

• When school is canceled due to
inclement weather, ALL school
events/activities/practices will also
be suspended.
• If the weather conditions improve,
these events/activities/practices
may be rescheduled with the
permission of the Superintendent
of Schools and the Principal only.

Vacations
• Co-Curricular students missing
events/activities/practices due to
vacations with parents/legal
guardians will be considered
excused absences during regularly
scheduled school vacation periods
only.

Attendance
• To practice or play…
– Minimum of 3.5 hours on a regular
school day
– Minimum of 2.5 hours on a delay day
• Any non-emergency, unusual
circumstance that would prevent
the co-curricular participant from
meeting the minimum attendance
requirement must have prior
approval from the Athletic Director
or Principal.

Academics
• Must be enrolled in 5 full
credit classes in a seven
period day.
– Gym= 1/2 credit
• Do not count gym!
• Must pass all classes!
• With one “F” the student must
have a 1.5 GPA.
